Time’s Breastfeeding Mom Defends Cover Photo: ‘We Knew Exactly What We Were Going to Get Into’

The mom on the latest cover of Time magazine said Friday she didn’t expect such a strong public reaction to the photo of her breastfeeding her 3-year-old son.
“I don’t think any of us were expecting it,”Jamie Lynne Grumet said, appearing on NBC’s “Today” with her son Aram.
The cover, meant to illustrate the philosophy of “attachment parenting,” went viral Thursday and sparked debate about breastfeeding children past babyhood — and the appropriateness of depicting it on a national magazine.
But Grumet said she wanted to make a point, and for that, “we knew exactly what we were going to get into.” She said she herself was breastfed until she was six years old, making her family “basically one of the better families to handle this.”
According to LAist, the Los Angeles mom has a blog, “I Am Not the Baby-Sitter,” and has written about breastfeeding her adopted Ethiopian son in addition to her biological child:
“When I asked him if he would also like to breastfeed he smiled and jumped right on my lap. Our first experience breastfeeding you could tell his was an old pro. It was clear it was something he missed dearly. Something from home I was able to give him.”
As a contributor to the website MomsLA, Grumet called breastfeeding “a subject I’m passionate about“ and described participating in a breastfeeding ”nurse-in” at a Target store.
She told “Today” some breastfeeding advocates have criticized the cover for the way she was actually feeding her son.
“This isn’t how we breastfeed at home, you know, it’s more of a cradling, nurturing situation,” she said. “I do understand why Time chose this picture, you know, because it did create such a media craze to get the dialogue talking.”
Addressing one of the other tenets of attachment parenting, the so-called “family bed,” Grumet said her parenting style does not take her away from being intimate with her husband.
“I don’t feel like that takes away from my personal life. My relationship with husband is very, very important to me, and I think that it gives my children a strong bond, too,” she said. “A lot of people say, you know, you can’t really be intimate with your husband if you’re co-sleeping and — those are kind of myths.”
Still, Grumet admitted she hopes this will be the last year of breastfeeding for Aram, who’s almost four.
“It’s not right for everybody,” she said. “You need to do what’s best for your baby.”

Posted on May 11, 2012 at 1:19pmThat woman does not look like a mom who breastfeeds. Lets just say that the process of having children & breastfeeding is not kind to the bust-line. She looks more like a model.
I’m okay with a mom breastfeeding her child as long as she thinks is right, but it is a personal thing to be done with discretion and certainly not for the cover of a magazine.

Posted on May 11, 2012 at 1:12pmMakes me wonder if this child is adopted, if people who adopt children are who are of the same sex or whatever, is having the groundwork layed for them to mal-treat their adopted children in this manner. Wonder who is going to play Bessie, the cow in that scenario? It seems the groundwork is being layed and children are going to be “nurtured” by those who are, in fact nurturing their own perversions.

Posted on May 11, 2012 at 1:09pmThe outrage is purelly cultural!!!!!!!People are very obcessed with breasts in this country. I’m from South America and I grew up seeing women breastfeeding in church during service, particularly the poorest people. For poor people this may be the only way to ensure their children gets fed. So breast feeding until 3, 4 is not bad in those cases. I am pro breastfeeding and I think we should be disgusted with amount of women that chooses not to breastfeed in developed countries because is “inconvenient”. We made it inconveniente by making it immoral if done publicaly, so women have hide in dirty bathrooms to breastfeed. While we get ofended by breastfeeding in public, we glamorize beer comercials, sexual ads, and sleazy tv programs!
You see a lot more skin on red carpet than when a woman is breast feeding in public…But breastfeeding in public is ofensive and needs to be done in some public bathroom…But is ok for stars to walk around half naked for publicity and money…but not breastfeeding for publicity.
I get that the outrage about this cover is the age of the boy, but children are very innocent at that age, they know nothing about sex and don’t think breasts are sexual. .I wouldn’t do it, but i would not look down on someone if they choose to do it. We need to encourage breastfeeding to look down on it.

Posted on May 11, 2012 at 1:19pmThis has nothing to do with necessary breast feeding, this has to do with pushing the public into accepting something that is an obvious ploy to further agendas. These agendas are the ultimate goals and scenes like the breast picture is a part of it to indoctrinate the public to change what is obviously offensive and unnatural to acceptable. They are inch by inch pushing these things down the throats of the American public. This is more attacks by those who want to live like hedonists.

Posted on May 11, 2012 at 1:34pmThank you for your wise words. I think the photo is beautiful. One showing the child snuggling with Mommy would have been better. TIME, of course, used this picture for the shock factor. You can bet that this much loved and nurtured child will be intelligent and loving as he grows to adulthood. Nursing isn’t just for the nurishment. it is for reassurance, nurturing and the closeness intended for a infant, toddler and if allowed, preschooler. Many women I’ve known through the years, including myself, had an older nursing child. Their children, as well as my own, are college educated, extremely healthy, have successful careers and stable marriages. I know a college professor and well-published writer from Japan that told me he remembered coming home from kindergarten and looking forward to nursing when he returned. Studies show that American women with the most education are the ones that believe in child-led weening and thus breastfeed much longer than most. Keep in mind, you can’t make a child nurse.

Posted on May 11, 2012 at 1:52pm@blackyb Your right it has everything to do with the US growing up as it relates to nudity and intimate contact between mothers and children. Posted on May 11, 2012 at 2:04pmIt would be nice if women could detach their breasts and carry them inside a bottle so it wouldn’t be offensive, but, in the real world created by GOD, breasts are attached to body and need to be exposed for feeding as GOD intended. If God had a problem with women pulling their breast out to feed he would have designed the whole thing differently. He could have made a little tube that comes out of the finger to feed milk to babies, but he wanted breasts. And breast milk is THE BEST THING FOR BABIES! To say that to expose a breast to feed is immoral you need to take your issues to the designer/creator. Because of the AMERICAN culture created by MEN breasts are immoral and indecent. But in many other cultures is embraced and people move on with their lives. As a result of breastfeeding be viewed as normal, is encoraged and more women do it. But in the US is so incovenient to breast feed and so “immoral” to do it publicaly that a lot of women just don’t want to do it…formula it is!!!!!!!!!
Report Post »Yes the magazine cover is provocative, but what magazine cover now days are not???? But we embrace them all, women wearing little clothes are glamorized everyday! Posted on May 11, 2012 at 5:05pmSo far as I can tell, no one commenting is against a mother breast feeding her child- anywhere. And no one is calling breastfeeding “immoral”. The problem here is the age of the child and the exploitation by Time (a magazine which wants us to view it as a serious news outlet) using this photo. Until reading your comment I was unaware that some poor mothers in some parts of South America breastfeed 3- 4 year olds because “this may be the only way to ensure their children gets fed”. So perhaps it is fair to assert that this is a “cultural thing”. However, Time magazine is not being published in the backwater regions or slums of South America, it is being published in the USA. It must be judged by American standards. By those standards, this cover is child abuse and child pornography.

We have tv shows promoting casual sex and glamorizing it, in a way that casual sex never has bad consequences, no STDS, no unwanted pregnancies… But is so normal, safe and very cool, we watch them and laugh.
Sports illustrated swiming suit issue cover shows a LOT more skin than that, yet is really really cool because is promoting women as sex objects. Nothing wrong with that! But to promote breast feeding is an outrage! It’s a provocation! Let’s comdem this woman and get back to promoting abortion, infidelity, casual sex, drinking, smoking, materialism… that’s safer and better for our culture
The so called super models looking like POWs due to starving themselves are making millions by walking around naked and promoting that image to young women, but let’s not be outraged about that because our culture told us that is ok and cute. They are “hot” we want to see them naked all over as long as they are not breast feeding in public because that would be an provocation! Wearing almost nothing with their legs spread wide open is ok, but please: no breastfeeding
Here’s the rule: Models with a t back tiny bikiny botton, covering their niples with sea shells it’s ok, but anyone breast feedin

Thanks for the link. How true.
I call those type of parents ‘helicopter parents’, always hovering and way too involved.
As a stay at home dad for the past 15 years, I’ve seen lots of parents at school, on the soccer fields, McDonald’s, etc, and I am amazed at some of the parenting styles. They range from little to no parenting skills (always on the phone) to over-protective types (don’t run, Johnnie).
There is a fine line and it can be difficult to find. Parents learn as much from their kids as the kids learn from the parents. The gal in the article is learning.
As far as this mom goes, it’s great she breast feeds, but I must agree with the folks that say putting it on the cover of “Time” may be too much.
You are correct in saying it’s between the mom and child, and I would never interfere with such an important function as feeding your child, or the close bond it builds.

Posted on May 11, 2012 at 5:02pmI desagree! We need to promote breast feeding in this country more than we promote beer and irresponsible sex, because is becoming a rare thing. Culture is turning it into something offensive making women hide in bathrooms to feed. Breast feeding has turned into something that needs to be hidden because is offensive if done in public. The result is less women breastfeeding and the few who do, only do it for 6 months or less. Breast milk is THE BEST thing for babies and no formula is the same as breast milk. The bond between mother child during breastfeeding is fundamental. Maybe after 1 year a child is too old, but they like it because they feel safe and loved. It’s more than just feeding. I wouldn’t do it after 1 year, and yes it’s kinda weird, but i know mothers who do and the children like it so much it’s hard to cut them off.
I really wish people would have the same attitude of outrage about casual sex. Sex should be something private and responsible, but we promote it on tv/magazines all day long… shows like two and half man…not only promotes using women as sexual objects and glamorizes trashy behavior but they had a child actor in it…where’s the outrage about that?
Everyone is concerned about the child in the magazine but how about the child in 2 and half men a show promoting drinking, sleeping around, cheating etc. Our culture said it‘s ok so it’s ok.
