Tissues of Aborted Fetuses Used in Medical Research… and Food Testing

A pro-life group in Minnesota has taken issue with a soon-to-be clinical trial approved by the Food and Drug Administration, Life Site News reports. What’s troubling Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life? The trial to be run by StemCells, Inc. is using tissues from the brains of aborted fetuses.
The trial will test the efficacy of human neural stem cells for reversing the effects of dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a disease that is the leading cause of vision loss and blindness for those older than 55 with no current treatment, according to the StemCells, Inc. release.
While it is expected that the Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life would be opposed to stem cell research as a whole, given that the undifferentiated cells are taken from an early-stage embryo, what the group really takes issue with is the type of cells being used – HuCNS-SC cells. In a report on StemCell Inc.’s website, these cells are described as derived from “fresh human fetal brain tissue.”
“StemCells Inc. is not using embryonic stem cells. A five-day-old human being at the embryonic stage does not have a brain, but a fetus at 10 or 20 weeks of development with visible fingers, toes and ears has a functioning brain,” said the MCCL’s director Scott Fischbach. “Developing human beings in the womb are treated simply as raw material for laboratory experimentation by StemCells Inc. and other companies seeking to monetize aborted unborn children.”
But use of tissue from aborted fetuses is not a new practice. Controversy really began after 20/20 aired its undercover investigation into the harvesting of fetal tissues in 2000. Investigate Magazine, a conservative Christian publication in New Zealand, describes this as the “hidden side of medical research.” In the U.S., the National Council for State Legislatures states that many states “restrict research on aborted fetuses or embryos, but research is often permitted with consent of the patient.” What Investigate Magazine found was that University of Auckland, in collaboration with the University of Washington, is also conducting experiments using tissues from aborted babies in eyesight research. Here’s the kicker — the aborted fetus tissues are imported from America.
Investigate Magazine states it was tipped from source about a research presentation that used tissue it described as “obtained from elective abortions in the United States and was transported here for the experiments.” The magazine found that it is legal in the country to import these tissues as long as they are handled properly.
Investigate states that the researcher and the supplier of the tissue — in the case of the Auckland research the tissue was supplied by Advanced Bioscience Resources — are subject to ethical oversight from committees and often have to obtain consent forms from the patient giving approval for the fetus’ tissues to be used in research.
Also making headlines recently is the use of aborted fetus tissues in food research. In January, ABC reported that an Oklahoma bill was introduced that would ban “food or any other product intended for human consumption which contains aborted human fetuses in the ingredients or which used aborted human fetuses in the research or development of any of the ingredients.” ABC continued:
“There is a potential that there are companies that are using aborted human babies in their research and development of basically enhancing flavor for artificial flavors,” [State Sen. Ralph Shorty] told KRMG Radio. “I don’t know if it is happening in Oklahoma, it may be, it may not be. What I am saying is that if it does happen then we are not going to allow it to manufacture here.”

Some people are calling the bill a back-door attempt to ban embryonic stem cell research — a ban Shortey said he would support, KRMG reported.
Even more recently, PepsiCo was accused of and denied contracting with a company whose flavor products are allegedly tested using aborted fetal cells. International Business Times reports that Senomyx produces these flavor chemicals and was exposed in 2011 by the non-profit group Children of God for Life as using human embryonic kidney cells from the line HEK-293 in testing — the cells are only used for testing and are not present in the final product. The New American reported that some stakeholders recently protested the relationship between the two companies — a $30 million research deal — and asked PepsiCo to “adopt a corporate policy that recognizes human rights and employs ethical standards which do not involve using the remains of aborted human beings in both private and collaborative research and development agreements.” The Security and Exchange Commission ruled against this effort:
PepsiCo lead attorney George A. Schieren had argued that the shareholder resolution should be disregarded because it “deals with matters related to the company’s ordinary business operations.” He added that “certain tasks are so fundamental to run a company on a day-to-day basis that they could not be subject to stockholder oversight.”
The New American has more on Pepsico’s response:
In response to the articles, Jeff Dahncke, senior director of communications for PepsiCo, e-mailed The New American “to correct the misperceptions and erroneous information” he said had appeared in media reports about the controversy. “PepsiCo does not conduct or fund research, including research performed by third parties, which utilizes any human tissue or cell lines derived from embryos or fetuses,” Dahncke insisted, noting that the policy is clearly stated in the company’s “statement on responsible research“ on its website. “Any research funded by PepsiCo and conducted by Senomyx for PepsiCo must abide by this responsible research statement,” he said.
Pepsico’s responsible research statement reads:
PepsiCo’s research processes and those of our partners are confidential for competitive reasons. However, PepsiCo does not conduct or fund research that utilizes any human tissue or cell lines derived from human embryos.
In The New American, Debi Vinnedge, founder and director of Children of God for Life, points out Senomyx’s own published research has shown that it uses cells from the HEK-293 line. The New American has more from Vinnedge:
She explained that the cells, officially known as HEK-293, were cultivated from the kidney tissue of the aborted baby, and then frozen. “From that point, the cell line is made available for sale by several companies, like American Type Cell Culture. The cell line is then shipped to buyers maintaining cold-chain temperature and subsequently either thawed for use or frozen in the buyer’s lab for future use. When it’s thawed, the cells are cultivated to produce more cells.”
She added: “PepsiCo and Senomyx can get away with saying that they’re not taking the cells directly from a fetus, even though they are ultimately from an aborted baby, and the cell line still contains the full DNA from that baby, no different than if you were taking it directly from the fetus.”
She noted that “morally, it makes no difference whether an abortion was done 30 years ago or today. Time does not diminish the original act of evil, nor does it lessen the culpability of those who knowingly and willingly utilize the remains of aborted children for profit.”
Coming full circle, the pro-life groups protesting the use of cells from aborted fetuses research by StemCells, Inc. or Senomyx state that there are other alternatives, such as adult stem cells. Fischbach said, “Unborn babies deserve dignity, not dissection and destruction.”

These are horrific times. The Bible is fullfilling. I have seen many things in my years,but never would I imagine I would even hear tell of something like this in my lifetime. The devil hates the Church, motherhood, innocents or anything that has a sweetness or goodness and kindness and trust about it. Evil is the opposite of everything good or Christlike. It is taking on many forms. We are seeing the destruction by evil by many who are puppets and are not even aware of who is pulling their strings.

I just told my husband that I think I’ll become Amish. The list of foods that PepsiCo puts out… It’s not just Pepsi. Doritos, Fritos, Lipton and Brisk Teas, Sobe drinks.. the list continues. And the government just keeps trying to force us into only consuming, that which has been processed through FDA “acceptable” companies. And this is what they want us to consume. I‘m still not able to process everything properly that I’ve been researching on this in the last 24 hours. My mind won’t stop reeling over the idea that this kind of thing is supposed to be illegal, but they get away with it because they’re not accepting a “fetus”, they’re only accepting harvested “cells”.
Report Post »I don’t understand the mentality of, “Well, since its being done already, we might as well use them.” For testing and creating FLAVOR ENHANCERS for the FOOD that we eat? If they can make a profit at it, doesn‘t that just normally mean that they’ll keep pushing for more? This isn’t just about medical research, no one’s lives are being saved by this research. But plenty are being sacrificed in the name of better tasting food for the rest of us? All in the name of squeezing one more hard earned dollar out of us.
Building a hut in the back 40 of Florida seems like an enticing proposition right now. I‘d rather forage my own food and fight off ’gators, than eat anything that the government tells me is “safe” and “healthy”.

Ask yourself this question, would it be acceptable to pass legislating mandating that a man convicted of rape should have all of his children murdered as a punishment and to prevent the spread of the “rape gene”? Of course not, but many Christians accept abortion in the case of rape. In our broken nature we have ruled that it is acceptable to sentence the offspring of rapists to death. Many “Christians” also are in favor of birth control, IVF, sterilization and divorce and remarriage. With all of these sinful actions being acceptable to “Christians” we have to ask ourselves, what is left that separates the sheep from the goats? According to many “Christians” it’s “Faith Alone” this is the problem with “Faith Alone” God does care what we do, not everyone who says Lord Lord will enter the Kingdom of Heaven but only those who DO (not think) the will of the Father. “Christians” are doing more to advance evil than non-Christians. When this is the case they can be lumped in with the other ingredients classification so we may never know if we’re eating aborted babies or not. Yes, I would call it cannibalism. What a shame. Our government and corporations producing our food and drink, to say nothing of the medical research organizations, insist on our taking part in their sin with them. What a shame!

Posted on March 24, 2012 at 9:09pmI wrote about the aborted fetuses in food about a year ago… it’s pretty old news, but the MSM either doesn’t publish it enough, or people don’t care enough. I do what I can, the Blaze does what it can, but it seems like it doesn’t matter.
This must have been a touch of what Lot felt like when he was living in Sodom. If I recall, the Bible says that he was “vexed” or something like that while living in the city. He certainly made his share of mistakes (he was eventually one of the elders of the city), but God still saw him as righteous, even though he was living in that evil city. Lot didn’t choose to leave until he was forced to leave… but for us that are upset about the conditions that we live under, there’s really nowhere to go. I’ve looked into it, but it seems like it’s even worse everywhere else.

I’d like to think my son is still alive & helping someone or helping find a cure for for some disease. I gave his remains that where usable. To toss out usable tissue of a once living person because someone feels is an abomination is wrong. Although I would never abort a child for the inconvenience of being pregnant, if a expecting mother spontaneously aborts her fetus (a miscarriage) & would like to give her child’s remains (as one does with organ transplants after a loved one dies) why would this be wrong?! Yet this does happen in our hospitals where parents are denied the right to give their miscarriage or stillborn child to medical science if they chose. This is a waste. And the hurt lasts longer when you couldn’t help someone else or bring home your baby.

Like how the hell in their right mind would put aluminum in the food??? Yet it is there and the companies put it on the ingredients list. But what I am saying who is going to put baby body parts or baby stem cells in the ingredient list. The commies will hold of on that for about another 10 years while they continue to work the stupid American mindset. Urea and Placenta are not baby stem cells. Currently, baby stem cells will cause a small ruckus in America. 10 years from now probably not. So again how will we know what foods it is in? We won;t for about 10 years is my guess. By then it will be irrelevant anyway, because we will either be dead or living under complete tyranny or we will have eliminated the commie threat!!!

Report Post »Personally I wouldn’t care if you turned my grandmother’s corpse into something useful, I don’t believe in the stupid medieval superstition that a dead body is anything more than garbage, but under our existing laws, it was her call what should be done with it. However, it is not wise to make dog food out of people as causing dogs to think of us as food increases the likelihood that they will turn against us.

Using a human corpse as a scarecrow is a terrible idea. Until the skeleton was completely picked clean of flesh it would attract rather than repel crows. Life and death aren’t sacred. Slugs and mold have life and die. The only special value a human life possesses lies in the thoughts and actions of the person during their life. Once you are dead your body is garbage, except for whatever parts of it could be recycled.

Truly fascinating things have been done with the tissue. While abortion is wrong, it is not illegal and if something good can come from an abortion than why not? Recent research in Rochester demonstrated that by injecting glial cells (part of the brain that are not neurons) into neonatal mice, the human cells took over and made smarter mice. This directly challenges the idea of the size of the brain dictates intelligence. This is a fundamental shift in our understanding of the brain, which to date we actually know very little. If everyone would open their eyes a bit and not be so mucked up by ideology we would be better off. If you want medicine, we need to use human cell culture lines for testing. Sure, we use animal models, but all they are are models. Many times (around 90%) a drug works in cells, in animals, but not in humans. By using human cell lines that are not derived from cancer cells (which are metabolically not right) we can better understand the human body and how our cells work with different drugs. Abortion is wrong, but if something good can come out of an evil, it would be equally evil not to pursue this good that can be born out of evil.

Posted on March 23, 2012 at 10:45pmI understand your point of having good come of evil that was done and have previously had thoughts similar, however the fact that most of the use in studies is without the knowledge of the public beyond the medical research. the ethical questions this opens are huge as what is ok to some is not to others. some science has no conscience, as a doctors daughter who performed much biology research in the former ussr, my father has told me stories of things that are pure absolute evil much of which occured while we were living in russia. at what point do we draw a moral line? have babies become a private commodity for private use in things beyond medical research? have you seen the horrible things china is using aborted babies for such as energy drinks and suppplements? Is plan parenthood making a profit selling dead babies for research?These questions and many others are making me thankful this issue is being brought on the table and out to the public.

The studies done in the USA using any human tissue, even adult tissue from a tissue bank, must undergo a rigorous approval process by ethical boards that consist of faculty from various departments and always at least 1 extramural member. So in the USA, all these kinds of studies (with the exception of cell lines, like the HEK293 cells that have been “immortalized”). I’m no fan of Planned Parenthood either. Plus, if they’re selling tissue for what is usually federally funded research, they should give it for free (since they receive federal funding). With regards to Russia and other less than transparent countries (Iran comes to mind), the reasons you listed is why their research is often not published in American or European journals. I think we’re on the same page. I just don’t like the hell and damnation theme so many here have.

The colony must be split at no later than the 8-cell stage. Once an embryo goes beyond this stage it becomes pluripotent instead of omnipotent. This means that once the embryo divides into 16 cells the cells begin to become their unique tissues. So the idea that stem cell research comes from taking a fetus from the womb is flat out false. That said, for brain research aborted fetuses, including late-term abortions, are used. This is because getting human brain tissue is difficult, and understanding how the brain develops is poorly understood. Once a person dies, the brain tissue quickly disintegrates. These cells are called primary cells and are only viable for a short time unless they are immortalized into a cell line (which essentially means making a cancer cell, which has many problems, most notably with its mitochondria, the part of the cell that makes energy. For further information on this check out “Cancer as a Metabolic Disease” coming to Amazon in July). So in short, yes, the cell lines are maintained and no new fetuses are used. Embryonic stem cells are made in a lab anyway, and are very difficult to work with. Abortion is a horrible thing and is murder, but if something good can come from the tissue to help others, isn’t that the best we can do to follow Him?

In less than 50 years we have pushed the envelope so far that we now have a Princetone Bioethicist saying ” An internationally known Princeton “bioethicist” and animal-rights activist says he’d kill disabled babies if it were in the “best interests” of the family, because he sees no distinction in the child’s life whether it is born or not, and the world already allows abortion.

The intentions of most are just not that noble. Aside from the fact that they are human babies and, as someone else said, there is no dignity for the baby or for those who use their parts after they’ve been murdered. It is totally different than when a grown person decides to donate their body to science when they’re dead.

One purpose that was given for this research was to help people with high blood pressure and diabetes. An alternative that has been successful is using stem cells from cord blood. Also successful is using one’s own adult stem cells.
Also know that many vaccinations are cultured in aborted fetal tissue. Make sure you do not get it nor let your kids have it. An example is chicken pox vaccine. It is unethical and it can cause autoimmune diseases.
