Rep. Jeremy Faison (Image Credit: Tennessean)
A Tennessee State Representative has turned some heads with his statement that it is a lack of values — not bullying — that has been leading some children to tragically take their own lives. On Tuesday, Rep. Jeremy Faison made the comments during a debate in the state’s House of Representatives over a cyberbullying bill.
“We can’t continue to legislate everything. We’ve had some horrible things happen in America and in our state, and there’s children that have actually committed suicide, but I will submit to you today that they did not commit suicide because of somebody bullying them,” Faison proclaimed. “They committed suicide because they were not instilled the proper principles of where their self-esteem came from at home.”
Based on his words, it seems Faison was saying that education about self-esteem in the home is the driving force behind youth suicide rather than rampant bullying.
It didn’t take long for the Tennessee Democratic Party to condemn the comments, the Tennessean reports. Here is a statement that was issued just minutes after Faison made his remarks about youths and suicide:
During the debate, Rep. Jeremy Faison spoke out against the bill, displaying a “boys will be boys” mentality towards bullying, and ignoring the public outcry from parents who have lost children to suicide after years of vicious and intolerable harassment. He then went one step further and said that “I will submit to you today, that they didn’t commit suicide because of somebody bullying them, they committed suicide because they were not instilled the proper principles of where their self esteem came from.”
Faison is apparently blaming the parents of suicide victims for their inability to “instill the proper principles” in their children. What a disgrace. Now, of course a tall and burly Faison doesn’t see any problems with bullying, as he admitted, he was perfectly capable of defending himself or dishing out punishment as he saw fit. But many kids don’t have that ability. That is why laws like these need to be passed.
It is unfortunate that some in the Republican Party have become the protectors of bullies. Of course, it is not terribly surprising, because as a legislative group they are nothing but bullies, disparaging and demeaning those without power in this country in order to build themselves up. So it is no wonder that they would see no big deal with the problems associated with childhood bullying in this country, and become the defenders of harassment.
Watch Faison‘s statements on the Tennessee House floor, below:
Following the incident and the fallout, the politician issued a statement saying that his word choice was regrettable and clarifying the motivating forces behind his opposition to the cyberbullying bill. In his view, childhood bullying should not be criminalized.
“After reviewing my comments on the House Floor today, I regret what was a poor choice of words. My true intent was to protect children from becoming criminals,” his statement read. “Suicide has touched my family, and I would never want a parent or family member to feel they were responsible for such an unimaginable tragedy.”

I’ll just leave this here.
If it’s a problem for adults, it should be a problem for the children the adults who would use fighting words grew from.

Posted on April 26, 2012 at 12:37pmIf your going to prevent bullying for children, then you have to prevent bullying in the workplace – an impossible job. The earlier children learn about both sides of bullying and how to handle it the better, because we can’t get rid of it in adulthood. We have it in the workplace, in the neighborhood, by “customer service” reps, all over. If a child grows up in a cocoon and has his first bullying experience in High school or college. He thinks the world is ending because he/she does not measure up to some unreasonable standard — so he/she is worthless in the eyes of society and will never be seen as useful. They fail to be able to analyze whether the standard is ******** or not, so they kill themselves or fail in school or quit/get fired from their jobs. It becomes a spiral.

Posted on April 26, 2012 at 11:46pmHe echos my words. I have said all along that there was something else wrong with these kids that caused them to commit suicide other than bullying. I agree with him…we cannot legislate everything, but the liberals will continue to try. Kids need to deal with the bullying and maybe if they weren’t coddled all their lives they would have the stamina to deal with it. I was bullied…..so I learned to fight back and “stand my ground.” To the person who said there are more gang violence today….not true….I remember when I was studying for my B.S. in Criminal Justice….and the riot gear they had on display for all the gang riots they had to deal with in the 70s.

Posted on April 26, 2012 at 11:16amAn epiphany of sorts for me, but I’m slow on the uptake sometimes.
How is bullying defined? In its basic sense, it’s extracting submission or compliance from someone by using coercive action.
Parenting in its basic form uses that very technique. Is it possible that this new “war on bullying” is actually a “war on parenting?”
Food for thought, I guess.

Posted on April 26, 2012 at 10:49am99% of bullies come from Democrat parents, no wonder the Democrats are up in arms.
The problem is Faison is telling the truth, just not in a tactful way. Sometimes the truth hurt. This does not diminish the loss of the child who took their life from bullying, but lets look at the facts here.
1. The child does not speak to their parents out of fear.
2. The child does not tell anyone else, even friends.
3. The child internalizes the message as a fault in him/her rather than the bully.
4. The parents are not in the child’s life and generally ignore them.
5. The parents dismiss the child’s mood swings and pass it off as something else.
6. The parents have not set an avenue for the child to come to them with issues.
So tell me where Faison is wrong?

Posted on April 26, 2012 at 11:11amNothing wrong with your assessment at all. Couple things to add…
The child doesn’t have an avenue to actually *fix* the bullying issue. The victim gets punished alongside the bully if they stand up for themselves in many cases.
Now, I *never* make this case, but there could be a case made for violent content in media instilling – how would we say – “non-traditional” methods with which to deal with issues. But to be clear, that *must* be paired with a lack of any other set moral boundaries. I’ve played every violent game in the book, and I’ve never shot up a school. So, it’s a case, but it must be paired with many other aspects to be valid.
So, it really does boil down to bad parenting in – not all – but some cases.

Posted on April 26, 2012 at 10:19amThe parents are causing a lot of the suicides as well as these activists pushing kids over the edge, but leaving them to stand alone among the average child. What I mean by this is when you have a child around 12 that thinks he is gay and being told to come out of the closet by adult gays in a classroom with maybe 30 straight kids they are going to look at him as different. This child claiming to be gay wants to feel like others and maybe wishes he had GF’s like other boys, but is being told by activists he is different and will always be under a struggle in life, has no confidence and takes his own life. If the parents didn’t know this, they should have….get to know your children and don’t let media outlets and internet sites destroy your children. I used this case bc I read about several similar to this. Another one is bullying bc of a child being overweight, and how can they not feel bad when the first lady is condemning fat kids and even some have been threatened to be taken from their homes, so this puts both the child and the parents under stress. Bullying will never stop and the only way to stop the kids is for us adults to teach by example, but you know how far that will go. Teach your child to stand their ground as best you can and to come to you when they feel lonely or different, and by all means make sure you don’t have the bully, if so correct them at home

They need enough self esteem to decide to be strong and stand their ground, and be victorious over the challenge by any means necessary. When I was a youth I was insecure about myself and was bullied at times. It was a very bad time in my life. I never seriously thought about killing myself, instead I figured I’d hurt one or two of the bullies. Started hiding bats and pipes in bushes along the route I walked home from school. I was ready and willing. Someone told the bullies what I was preparing for them. They backed off figuring I was crazy and they weren’t ready to die yet. Build up self esteem, honor, respect, responsibility and pride. Then let’s see how an individual handles himself when a bully approaches. Not saying it will change all cases, but I’d be willing to bet it changes many situations. If the bully is taught all the above values, they certainly would be less apt to be a bully in the first place. I wish people would stand their ground on their statements. Bullies are the ones who should be taken out of the schools and home taught! Schools should be held accountable if they don’t stop bullies. Bullies are the ones who usually come from homes where they learn this behavior.. are usually abused and act out what they get… its the only power they have… Why should bullied children have to be home taught?? The real thing this guy is doing is protecting the bullies and laying the blame on parents of children who committed suicide. Typical ploy by a leftwing liberal Domocrat! He is saying.. lets just keep the bullies in school so they can continue to bully.. lets not punish them in anyway. Many years ago I read an article that those who end up becoming abusive and who murder were in fact bullies in the school system!! People have come forward and remembered how horrible these people were in school! So this jerk who is blaming parents really needs to blame the parents of bullies.. not the opposite.. Posted on April 26, 2012 at 11:00amAnd how many school shootings are done by bullies? If you look at the statistics, school shootings where more than one victim are involved are usually done by the kids that were bullied and felt that they had to retaliate against the bullies or popular kids. It means that those individuals do not know how to react to social situations or deal with the reality that there are going to be people that you come in contact with that don’t like you for whatever reason. That can be blamed on the parents. Parents who raise their kids and tell them that they are wonderful and everybody is a winner and you can’t lose. When the get older and realize that the world doesn’t work like that they become enraged and believe that there must be something wrong with everybody else in society because they are perfect.
My parents taught me to walk away. They instilled Christian values in me that allowed me to be able to forgive somebody. I never got into a fight and I never felt like a loser despite being overweight and picked on for being a book worm. I was able to laugh at myself and turn things around to laugh with those doing the bullying. And more importantly I learned that once I have that diploma, I NEVER have to see those people in high school again.

If it is verbal – I grew up in the time when “sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me” so how did we get so soft that words have the power to “make” our kids kill themselves? If it is physical – assault – there are laws against that already so just enforce what is there. I have five daughters and I can not keep them from making nasty comments about their sisters at home when I am there too, so how can we expect teachers to do what we as parents can not do at home?
