‘Hooters’ Hullabaloo: MSNBC’s Mika Offended by GOP Reps Success Story

This is a story you will not see on MSNBC, more on that later.
29 year old Republican Julia Hurley is a Southern Baptist, a member of the NRA and a former Hooters Girl. Ms. Hurley also defeated an incumbent Democrat to win her seat in the Tennessee State Legislature and she credits her time at Hooters Restaurant with helping her accomplish that feat. The article penned by Hurley appears in the “Orange Pride Spotlight” section in the latest edition of Hooter Magazine where she shares some of her thoughts;“I have taken quite a bit of flack from the public at large during my run for State House in Tennessee for being a Hooters Girl,” she said. “But I know that without that time in my life I would not be as strong-willed and eager to become successful.”
Hurley’s past history at the restaurant was a double-edged sword as her opponents tried to use it against her, while regular customers were quick to reach into their pockets and donate to her campaign.
The freshman representative had political aspirations as a young girl but those dreams were put on hold when she became a mother at the age of 15. Julia Hurley is a single mom who managed to put herself through college, raise her child and stay focused on her goals, and she has given some of the credit for all of that to Hooters;
“If I could make it at Hooters, I could make it anywhere”
This story has all the markings of a classic LIFETIME (television for women), made-for-tv-movie. Pretty Southern girl with big political dreams gets pregnant at 15, has to waitress at Hooters to support herself and her young child, works her way through college (still working at Hooters) while raising her daughter. The single mom decides that she must do something to solve the illiteracy problems in her town and to help bring more jobs for the people, so she runs for office and defeats an incumbent who tried to make her past employment an issue. A triumph of the single woman over the system.
So why won’t this be seen on MSNBC? Because Mika says so.

I wonder if she would have been a Democrate, this would have been a story about how women are exploited by Hooters or some other do-gooder story. I‘m proud to say that Hooter’s sucess is because of their brand, and it works for them. This woman worked for Hooters and completed her education and moved on and is proud of her background, but some liberal JOKE can’t admit it happened here in America. You have to be some IVY league pencil neck to get any credibility from these folks… Sorry, America is proud of hardworking folks that more often than not suceed inspite elitest cookie cutter style ignorance…

Posted on February 9, 2011 at 6:17pmYou missed the point. It’s not about the story…it’s ALL about the POLITICS! Just as the hags of NOW proclaim that a woman cannot be a “feminist” without also being a marxist, this sucessful woman can have no relevancy because she is of the wrong POLITICAL PARTY. Posted on February 9, 2011 at 3:42pmThe liberal is right- there is no value in this woman’s story.
All the story says is that you can live your life in a completely idiotic fashion and still become a successful politician. The liberal is as hypocritical as the woman working at hooters calling herself a christian.
If conservatives or libertarians view objectifying women in strip clubs or other questionable establishments as a great part of society, then you are just as wrong and hypocritical as liberals.
The Truth no longer has a home anywhere.
Report Post »NC1
Posted on February 9, 2011 at 3:56pmI‘m sure you’ve never made a mistake and had to work hard to overcome any odds now have you? At least she wasn’t a stripper or a ******. There’s nothing wrong with being a waitress where the “gimmick” to get customers is to have good looking women. She found a job that paid her well and helped her reach her goals. Big deal. Probably a good thing they didn‘t run the story on the show just so it wouldn’t give stupid liberals something to hound her about.
Don’t see it as objectifying women. A woman is one of the most beautiful creations God made. I sure as heck wouldn’t be happy if they all looked like Rachel Maddow or Helen Thomas. Wouldn’t give me any incentive to procreate.

Julia Hurley appears to be about the same age as my daughter and I can tell you from experience that teaching my daughter values was extremely difficult in the face of competition from outside influences to the contrary. Music, movies, TV, you name it from the 60‘s and 70’s were all preaching the gospel of “if it feels good do it”. The principles of sane living, to the 15-yr old mind, were drab indeed compared to calls for “free love”, images of being a “maniac”, admonitions to “let it all hang out” and the promise of mind expansion through the use of illegal drugs.
Having lived it myself I know firsthand the anguish this lady’s parents went through trying to save her from herself. I’m so very glad that Ms. Hurley, like my daughter, finally looked around and realized how demoralizing and destructive the liberal lifestyle is. Only then was she able to apply her God-given capacity to develop her mind and her talents.

Posted on February 9, 2011 at 6:13pmYou are as moronic as my last girlfriend. Hooters is a legitimate restaurant chain which specializes in using attractive women in shorts and a t-shirt to attract customers. I’ve seen entire families eating there. So your moronic excuse for dissing Julia Hurley is itself without merit.
I applaud her for making a sucess of her life after finding herself in a difficult situation. Most liberal/progressive/marxist types like those on “mourning joe” would instead sit back and let the government take care of them while they pump out more bablies for our tax dollars to feed. Instead, Rep. Hurley did the right thing by putting herself through school and contributing back to the country which gave her the opportunity to do so.
So why are you dissing a self-made sucess story like this? The obvious answer would be that she is of the wrong political philosophy…otherwise you would be singing her praises to the heavens because she was a progressive/marxist. In other words, you are a hypocrite of the most revolting sort, a troll who is no doubt attacking this sucessful woman purely because she is not of the left. Begone troll!

First off- yes I’ve made mistakes, but I don’t credit my success to objectifying myself or credit my mistakes.
Secondly- I didn’t judge her soul, she is blatantly crediting her immoral activities to her political success.
Thirdly- Hooters is not a legitimate establishment. At least not for people who like to call themselves “Christian”. Sure, it’s perfectly legitimate for liberals or libertarians with no ethics, but other than that… not really.

“Saul hunted and murdered followers of Christ. Then he was redeemed by that very same Christ and his name was changed to Paul.
By your standard, Paul was no Christian.”
Paul didn’t credit his past as being the road to his success, nor did he credit killing Christians as good- this woman credits her objectification at hooters a good thing, so your point is moot.
“How fortunate that, on the day of judgement, it will not be someone who thinks like you judging us.”
So, it’s ok for you to subjectively judge the state of my soul, since you must be God; but I cannot judge the actions of a woman as being wrong. Yeah, you sound like the type of Christian libertarian I hated when I was a liberal.

The Federal government has taken us into a very severe NATIONAAL SECURITY CRISIS by unrestrained and blatant disregard for our Court system and Congress The EPA has way overstepped its boundaries in blocking Gulf, Alaska, Texas drilling! they have blocked access to oil sands in Montana and North Dakota. This story shows how someone can come from nothing, make bad choices, learn from their mistakes and OVERCOME. She is also to be admired for not hiding who she is or what she’s done. She realizes that these experiences, while not the ideal nuclear family story, made her the strong person she is today. She didn’t lay about and whine about the Education system, she got up and did something about it.
As far as “living her life the wrong way” so effing what? She learned and she changed. Who knows what sort of family she came from, but she OVERCAME. 15 year old girls aren’t known for making the best life choices. Did she lay about, nail herself to the “single mom” cross and filch from the Government? No, she worked her butt off waiting tables, while going to school to better herself and raising a child alone. Trust me, done that, it isn’t an easy job. And how pray tell me is she a hypocrite? If she were a hypocrite, she would be like you, pretending she’s superior and passing judgement on others. God says the only unforgivable sin is to deny he exists. If he is that forgiving, who are you to pass judgement and not be?

The 15yr old had the child….did not abort it. She worked and put herself thru school, clothed….not stripping (many cheerleaders wear less clothes than Hooter waitresses), raised her child, improved her live and then went on to try to improve other people lives around her.
I seriously think your a glass half empty kind of person. People make mistakes…it’s how you deal with adversity and your choices that make you…not the being perfect cause as you know or should know, nobody can make that claim. She had the child, she worked, she supported her child, she attended college, continued on to help her community. I bet she has raised a child who will not get pregnant at 15, and will not grow up to believe the government is going to give her money for housing, food, medical, transportation and otherwise entice her to become a blob demanding a handout. Hooters isn’t an ideal for any female, but I worked in a cannery while I earned my degree, I don’t reccomend that either. Boo Hoo get over the condescention.

Posted on February 10, 2011 at 1:30amPete:
I see where you’re coming from. I agree that she didn’t make very good choices when she was laying down at 15 or working at Hooters to support herself and her child. And this fallacy that it was either that or stripping or prostituting or living off of welfare doesn’t fly. She could have been a waitress at another restaurant–it was probably easier for her to make more money if half her rear and most of her chest was on display for God and everyone–or taken another job somewhere else. Easier, as we know, does not always equal better.
That being said…I think we all have made mistakes in our lives. It seems that she is no longer the Hooters girl of her earlier life. Maybe she regrets it, maybe she doesn’t. That does not mean she isn’t the person she is today based, in part, on the choices–good and bad–that she made.
And, as many have said, we were (and are) not in her shoes. Though we can guess what we might have done in her situation (from a 20/20 rearview perspective), we don’t know anything other than a very thin veneer of what went on. Nobody’s asking you to admire her for (some think) bad choices…rather for overcoming them and creating better circumstances for herself and her child. Basing our opinions of her on what she did when she was so young says far more about us than it does on her.
Besides, this story isn’t about her. It‘s about the clowns who think they’re better than everyone else and get to judge what we see on the “news”. It‘s pretty astonishing that they can’t see how absurd their behavior is.

I understand your points and for the most part I agree with you. My point is that she is crediting her life choices, which are objectively not the best, and she is stating that they are the reason for her success.
I credit her for not killing her child, yet many people don’t kill their children- I hardly consider that worthy of an award; It should be a given.
I am not passing judgment on her soul- I am judging her statements and her actions, which Christ told us to judge to determine sheep from the wolves, and all the other bible verses people who whine about judgment conveniently ignore.
The only people who worry about judgment are the guilty ones… The very fact that people claim I am judging someone is a judgment so the entire premise that we shouldn’t judge is idiotic.

Posted on February 11, 2011 at 8:54amI see we have some hypocrites on bard today. This woman made a mistake and she upheld her obligation and took care of child. Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones. I think the ones that have a problem with her are just plain jealous. People get past your hate of women who can lead.

Posted on February 11, 2011 at 10:08amMs. Hurley has taken a path to be successful, that would not be possible to achieve anywhere except in America! Single parent and college grad. WAY TO GO! Who among us has done something not wise..stupid…as a teenager, regardless of their faith. Ms. Hurley has taken a path to success that was not illegal and without the help of the man (boy) that should have stepped up to the plate. Why did he not cowboy-up? MSNBC we should celebrate someone that has taken a path to succeed rather than be on welfare. Mika I know some of your great decisions and look where you are today. Let’s discuss your past decisions and faith. Again a double standard.
