To Run or Not to Run: Is Chris Christie Reconsidering Presidential Bid in 2012?

In the wake of Thursday night’s GOP presidential debate, many conservatives are reportedly left feeling flat over the choice of Republican candidates on offer — having been particularly disheartened by Texas Governor Rick Perry’s performance, which critics like National Review editor Rich Lowry assert was replete with a number of “notably bad answers.”
The arguably lackluster performances by frontrunners Perry, and perhaps to a lesser extent, Mitt Romney, have prompted a whirlwind of speculation as to whether New Jersey Governor Chris Christie might reconsider throwing his hat in the ring after all. And it seems more than a handful of conservatives are hoping he’ll do just that.
Perhaps the most scathing critique of the top GOP contenders came in a special editorial from The Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol, who wrote:
…no front-runner in a presidential field has ever, we imagine, had as weak a showing as Rick Perry. It was close to a disqualifying two hours for him. And Mitt Romney remains, when all is said and done, a technocratic management consultant whose one term as governor produced Romneycare. He could rise to the occasion as president. Or not.
But in a week in which markets collapsed, Solyndra exploded, our Middle East policy was in meltdown, the Iranian nuclear threat became more urgent, and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff fingered our “ally” Pakistan as a sponsor of terror against American forces in Afghanistan—none of the candidates really seemed up to the moment, either politically or substantively. In the midst of a crisis, we’re getting politics as usual—and a somewhat subpar version of politics as usual at that.
Here, just a month before filing deadlines arrive, Kristol was setting the stage for the question others are likely asking: Who else is there?
For Kristol, Lowry, former Bush speechwriter Michael Gerson and a smattering of other prominent conservatives, that answer could be Christie — who, according to Kristol “is, in every sense, a big man for a big job.” Even The Washington Post’s Jennifer Rubin said Christie can “raise the money and the roof.”
Adding to the Christie-dialogue, last week The Blaze reported Gerson as saying:
“I don’t think Republicans regard this as a strong field,” Gerson said, during an appearance on ABC’s “This Week.“ ”So there is still talk of people getting in the race. Not just [Sarah] Palin but last week, Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey was in Chicago and had two meetings with serious Republican groups from the Midwest.”
“He is actively, I think, considering getting in this race, which would throw things open once more,” he added. “But the desire for that to happen … it shows that they are not happy with the current field, they think it needs to be filled out in an important way. I don’t know if that is going to happen, but the desire for many Republicans to expand this field shows that they are not content with it.”
So is all this just futile speculation, or is Christie seriously reconsidering a presidential bid? While not citing sources, according to an article in Newsmax Friday, Christie says he will let major Republican donors know if he is deciding to enter the Republican primary within the coming days. The article also notes that over the course of the last several weeks, key Republican donors have been urging the governor to reconsider and that, in an effort to woo the governor, a top-secret meeting was conducted with Christie and several Republican billionaires:
A source familiar with the meeting suggested that Christie seemed inclined to enter the race but said he needed more time.
Christie promised to make a final decision “within two weeks,” the source said.
Another source involved in GOP fundraising tells Newsmax that that uncommitted fundraisers and donors have been receiving phone calls from top political aides to Christie, seeking their feedback about his possible entry into the race.
But perhaps the most compelling piece of “evidence” Christie-fans claim is proof that the governor might reconsider a 2012 presidential bid, came during a recent reporters’ forum at the Heritage Foundation with Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels, where Christie disparaged the current GOP field and spoke about what the country really needs.
“I think what the country is thirsting for, more than anything else right now, is someone of stature and credibility to tell them that and say, ‘Here’s where I want us to go to deal with this crisis,’” Christie said.
“The fact that nobody yet who’s running for president, in my view, has done that effectively is why you continue to hear people ask Daniels if he‘ll reconsider and ask me if I’ll reconsider.”
Daniels, who has seemed more definitive in his refusal to run, gave his “good bud” Christie two thumbs-up stating, “I‘m not taking ’no’ from Christie,” Daniels said. “I‘m taking ’not yet.’”
Daniels also told the Post’s Rubin that “Chris is the best example [of a bold leader] that I can think of. He shares my view that too many of our colleagues are too timid.”
But while rumors of a Christie presidential bid abound, just last month the Huffington Post reported that the Christie camp vehemently denied claims that the governor will run in 2012.
“It’s completely untrue — one hundred percent that is not true,” Christie adviser Mike Duhaime said.
“Nothing’s changed.”
Much can change in a month, however, and it is possible that as the spark fizzles out on the current Republican frontrunners, Christie might now see an opportunity to fill a growing void. If Newsmax is correct, maybe we will finally know with a greater degree of certainty in the next two weeks. Or, worst case scenario, we will have our answer before filing deadlines arrive in one month’s time.

Posted on September 24, 2011 at 1:06amWhat bothers me is that Palin & Christie and even West who seem to have so much national Republican/TEA and even Independant support MAY be waiting to the deadline to file. It is almost like they are afraid to debate their own. It just bugs me! I sometimes wish that these guys/girls would run as a team. The POTUS is “A” VP “B”. etc, etc. Stop with the attacks of your own, work together. Who cares whose name is at the top, ATTACK as a team. However that is not how it works, and that is sad!

Not so quick guys. I think he would school BHO but I think it would put us into another realm of problems! I like Christie but its the sound bites that I like. I fear too many are falling for the Scott Brown Effect now with Christie. He has some serious issues that need to be addressed, and is why Mark Levin, staunchly against him, wants him to run to get it all out in the open! Levin argues that things are so far left that Christie who is a miderate seems like a conservative against radical left policies. For example he is on record of being pro-amnesty, did not join the other states suing the govt over Obamacare, pro gun control and the list goes on. Want complete story check this expose` out http://conservativenewjersey.com/chris-christie-a-conservative-myth-exposed
I have submitted it several times to The Blaze to review but nothing…. its worth the read, and heed caution, he sounds great but so did BHO to many once upon a time!!! If it was BHO vs Christie yes I will vote for Christie but Id be quite concerned! http://SavingtheRepublic.com

PALIN has been at the PODIUM for 3 years nationally, while the rest of them (EXCEPT CAIN) were slapping each other on the back and accomplishing 0 in CONGRESS!!! Huntsman brags like a prissypants that “I SPEAK CHINESE”…well Dude, you didn’t accomplish much did you?! Romney brags about being a BUSINESS MAN ….Is that what they call CORPORATE RAIDERS now? Bachmann and her 23 FOSTER kids (why would anyone refer to their kids as anything but KIDS??) of which some were only with her for 3 days…she is nothing like PALIN. Just a very aggressive, self-serving, lousy decision maker. DeMint, Rubio, Ryan all better than she is. Santorum will come up stronger…NEWT needs to be in CABINET, I hope CAIN will be too, Paul need to fold tin foil…nice guy, has good points but we need someone who doesn’t just tell us what the problems are (after the fact a la John McCain) but has faced the dragons and slayed them : PALIN. What we like about Christie is his NEW JERSEY swagger, but he has baggage and an obvious discipline problem…no offense intended. Palin and Christie aren’t “afraid” to debate. Let‘s get that silly notion outta anybody’s squash.
Both cases are different – Palin has enough common sense to understand that in this day and age, any conservative that takes the traditional route is doomed for failure. Too many outlets trying to paint them bad. Just look at how all our current choices appear – really bad. The media steers the lemmings into the direction they want. Proof? McCain and now Romney. The ultimate goal is not just to beat Obama, but to fix the current problems. If we elect a lightweight, we have not solved any problems. If McCain were POTUS, what really be different except no MarxistCare?
With Christie, it‘s sort of the same where he’s letting the market make his decision.

Posted on September 24, 2011 at 10:48amChristie better not change his mind at this late date…Palin either! There is not enough time to vet them before the primaries start and they have missed the debates where we are able to scrutinize them and ask questions! Filing deadlines need to change…if a person is so disorganized that they haven’t made up their mind, done the fundraising, built the team, then they need to work on other things this time around! Christie hasn’t finished a term as governor and we need to see a significant record to question! Todd Palin is filing for divorce from Sarah according to reports and she will be busy and distracted dealing with that…not to mention she resigned before completing one term as governor and we need a record to scrutinize! If it‘s true she’s been doing drugs like her son, and having a sixth month long affair with her husbands business partner, there are serious flaws in her character!

Posted on September 24, 2011 at 11:15amHere we are, a defining moment in our history.
We need a leader who is not chased by the boogie man, a leader that is fearless to speak his mind and tell the American people the truth. Can it be done ? The current field needs to always be on guard and using talking points, who is really running for office the person or the staff. Christie is real, not very often do we get a politician that speaks his mind, does not have to read from a script and uses basic common sense and applies it.
Here is my fear, If Christie jumps in, i believe the stock market will jump, gold will take a nose dive, banks will start lending and the economy will take off. if that happens who will take credit for it ? Obama,. Would that then assure a Obama re election.
The American people want strength and back bone in the white house, we have to really be careful. i am just a guy using a little common sense. lets hope Christie jumps in, though the battle will just begin. we must focus on the fact that as Americans we are not socialist, and we must always have a president in the oval office that does not promote socialism. if Christie jumps in we must get behind him to insure he is credited for the economy turning around. just do to the fact he jumps in, the American people will have some certainty about our future.

Posted on September 24, 2011 at 12:45pmSantorum is my guy too.
His problems:
He isn’t a business man non-politician like Cain who can use that to bring real freshness to the race. Also Cain speaks better even if less substantively. Santorum is usually right on policy but Cain has more color, no pun intended.
He isn’t a sitting governor like Perry who can use that base to build support. The public, especially republicans, likes governors for the Presidency. He isn’t a former Governor who ran last time and has the “next in line” factor.
He isn’t an active congressman acting as a leader in the Tea Party like Bachmann. Who was campaigning to defeat Santorum in the last election? Who was attacking him? No one because until he announced his run he wasn’t in the game.
He doesn’t have a solid fanatical base of suppport like Ron Paul.
All this means that he gets little attention. With little attention comes little money. And with little money comes less attention and the media write you off. It‘s a viscious cycle and he’s stuck in the middle.
His only shot is the “credible” frontrunners blow themselves up and he emmerges as the last credible man with a shot.
He’s the best on most of the issues: Strong pro-life and pro-marriage. the gays really hate him. He‘s strong on defenese and really understands that the enemy isn’t terrorism, unlike Bush, but radical Islam. He’s solid on the 2nd ammendment, on fiscal issues generally, on immigration. He helped write the Welfare Reform Act.

Posted on September 24, 2011 at 1:06pmI like Christie. He is a no bull kind of guy. But do we really know enough about his politics, leadership, and core beliefs to choose him for our president? I know I sure don’t. He is a rookie yet in my opinion. My instinct tells me to let time takes it course with Governor Christie and prove or disprove his qualifications. This is not a popularity contest. It is for the highest seat in the land, the U.S. president. We must be more diligent in researching our presidential candidates. I think we need to take the brass ring out of our noses and get about the business of educating ourselves about our potential POTUS.

Posted on September 24, 2011 at 1:18pmSAVING THE Republic.com-I agree with you completely regarding Christie’s questionable views specifically on amnesty for illegals. I would like to know who the billionaires are that are trying to buy this election and their agenda. I strongly feel that the Republican establishment is pro open borders. Look at how Palin ran and supported McCain after the election. How can Palin be considered a conservative when she aggressively supported McCain? I also find it odd how the Republican establishment was shoving Perry down our throats as they touted his conservatism. His illegal immigration support was well known so why did the Republicans’s support him. Look at how Bush spent and really did nothing to secure the border and yet the Republican establishment hailed him as a great conservative. Now the Republican Billionaire’s are touting Christie as the great savior and he is supportive of amnesty. I strongly feel that illegal immigration along with jobs are the most important issues of thee 2012 election. The U.S. is at a tipping point and the more illegals that cross our borders the more haealthcare, education, crime rates increase as well as the Democratic voting base, which directly affects the quality of life for every U.S. citizen.
I like Romney because he was consistently strong on this issue back in 2008 and in 2011. I also like Santorum,Cain,Bachman and Gingrich. I am very hesitant to vote for someone that some Billionaire has bought and tells me to vote for.

Plus, because of his size, I would be very concerned about his health in such a high pressured job. I now know I don’t want Perry, not sure about Romney. The only other ones I would really like to hear more from is Santorem and Gingrich. Gingrich seems incredibly intelligent but I’m not sure about his personality and if he could unite the parties, but still, I wish the media would give him more time so I can hear what he has to say. This focus on only the two, Perry and Romney is not only unfair to the rest of the candidates, it’s unfair to us. It seems the media decides who the front runners are, not we the people. Posted on September 24, 2011 at 1:49pmThat’s the same stupid and false argument that many birthers used. He doesn’t have to have two US citizens for parents to be a natural born citizen. One will do if he wasn’t born here. And if he WAS born here none have to be citizens. Anchor baby ring a bell? He was born in Miami which made him a citizen at birth, which is precisely what natural born citizen means.

Posted on September 24, 2011 at 12:18amChristie is a Northeast Liberal.As trusty as a lobster fisherman.maybe.
We grow things out here in the Midwest. We feed the World. Some of us enjoy the bounty more than others.Look at Christie for an example.

Posted on September 24, 2011 at 2:54pmMrMagoo, What does “as trusty as a lobster fisherman” mean? I assume you meant trustworthy. Are you implying something about the character of lobstermen up here or are you implying they are liberal?
If it’s the latter that might be debatable, depending on where in the Northeast you are. Sadly, most of them in my town are liberla, but I know quite a few elsewhere who aren’t.

Posted on September 23, 2011 at 11:53pmI hope not… http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0511/55793.html I was as much for Christie porn as the next conservative until this turn of events. I can’t trust anyone ha enough reasoning skills or ability to think logically about other issues if they believe man is responsible for (nonexistent) climate change.

Posted on September 24, 2011 at 12:13amaccording to your link he did this:
In vetoing a bill (S2946) that would have required New Jersey to stay in a regional program intended to curb greenhouse gases — a program Christie plans to leave by the end of the year — the governor said “climate change is real.”
he may believe climate change is real, but he is vetoing bills that are anti-business and do anything to change it. Whether he believes climate change is real or not, his actions show that he doesn’t believe it is the govt responsibility to regulate it…

Posted on September 24, 2011 at 12:43amHe may have made the right decision this time, but I can’t trust the reasoning skills of someone who believes in global warming, let alone that man is responsible. He’s ignoring so much information to form that opinion, what is he going to ignore in the future?
And you’re welcome for the link, Rational Man!

Posted on September 24, 2011 at 7:42amI agree. I think Christy is a RHINO and I think the media is trying to pick our canidate by using reverse physcology. Be careful people. Of course we will support whoever, but lets give the facts careful consideration.

Posted on September 23, 2011 at 11:47pmI for one am glad that Rick Perry had his hat handed to him over the immigration issue. He chose to support his business contributors as opposed to protecting his citizens. The old chickens came home to roost last night.
I think Mitt is electable and we can keep the Gov of NJ in the wings and run him in eight years…

Posted on September 24, 2011 at 1:30pmI completely agree with you. I do, unlike many others on this blog think Romney is more of a conservative than Bush and Perry combined. I want Romney because he can’t be bought,he already has enough money. Romney took a strong stand on illegal immigration in 2008 and he is taking a strong stand on illegal immigration in 2011. Christie’s comments indicate that he is pro amnesty and I feel like he will be like Bush and do nothing to secure the borders. Why is it that the Republican establishment is always pushing someone who is soft or even someone who promotes open borders like Perry,Bush and Christie????????? Who are these billionaires trying to buy the election????

Posted on September 24, 2011 at 12:08amChristie has gotten spending results in a state that it is normally unheard of. Why does he have to be a tea party conservative? He has cut spending, started working to balance the budget, gotten results in a state that is almost totally against him philsofically. He isn’t afraid to do what needs to be done to get the results that are best for his state. That is actual leadership, not a campaigner in chief like we have now…
