Akin Claims He’s Staying in the Race, But Reports Say Otherwise

Todd Akin might be willing to debase himself to escape his recent controversial statement about “legitimate rape,” but when it comes to sticking around in his race, he is apparently as stubborn as a mule.

Faced with the deluge of negative reactions to his statement, Akin has moved very quickly to try and recover, reportedly cutting an ad that will run apologizing for the statement, and also going on former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee’s radio show to issue an apology.

Akin claims he holds “deep empathy…for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year.” Still, he’s not backing out, as his Twitter feed shows.

However, it may be too little too late. Politico reports that high ranking Missouri Republicans are working aggressively to get Akin to drop out of the race, citing concerns about his viability. Akin’s fellow Senate candidates Scott Brown and Denny Rehberg have practically disowned Akin, as has freshman Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson. All four Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates have condemned him. The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) has announced its intentions not to fund him if he stays in the race. Akin is a pariah in his own party.

Faced with this status, one wonders if Akin will reconsider his decision to stay in the race.

UPDATE: Akin‘s apology on Mike Huckabee’s show is now on Youtube. You can watch both parts of it here:

The apology notwithstanding, GOP Presidential nominee Mitt Romney is calling on Rep. Akin to take 24 hours to “reconsider” his campaign. Whether this appeal from the standard bearer of his own party will register with Akin remains to be seen.

However, if the following Tweet from RedState’s Erick Erickson is any guide, he may not need the full 24 hours:

nbsp; Another “senior Republican source” has told Buzzfeed’s Ben Smith that Akin is taking “concrete steps” to withdraw from the race. Other sources close to Akin deny the report.

I’ve been following this forum, for 24 hours now, and I can not begin to say, how sad these comments have made me. I did not vote for this man, (Brunner was my choice) but the wonderful people of my state made their voices heard, and I respect that. That being said, is that not what freedom (that little pesky word) is? This man is pro-life all the way, this is his conviction, and God bless him for that.( I only wish that I would have followed some of my own conviction’s as well.) I thought we were looking for candidate’s who stood for something, not just saying what the establishment tells them to say or do. Looks to me that maybe we ought to search our own hearts, before jumping on the forum‘s and calling names at those who still have conviction’s, and stand by them!

REALLY disappointed with Sarah Palin’s penchant for supporting candidates because of their genitalia. If it weren‘t for her Brunner would’ve been a shoe-in and rightfully so. I think he originally meant a real rape vs. an accusation of one. But that won’t help him either. Please step down and run in the future.

I agree. Akin did not even say the things that are being repeated as he said. The entire media including the conservative media is laying down for distortion in order to prevent minimal damage to the Republican party. I realize they want to win, but at what cost to their integrity? Akin only said that doctors have said, “in the case of legitimate rape most of the time pregnancy does not occur.” I ascertained from his meaning that in the case of legitmate rape vs. illegitmate rape, where the woman falsely claims rape for revenge or to gain sympathy and/or attention, that a woman’s body, due to fear, stress, and anxiety, creates defenses to keep pregnancy from happening. This sounds and maybe is totally legitimate. I did not decypher in any way that he said that rape is not legitimate. This is thoroughly a media distortion designed to denergrate Akin to women by the liberal progressive press. I am ashamed the conservative press is complicit in this devious destruction of another conservative just to shut down the chatter. Despicable!!!

He seems like a great guy but the comment “legitimant rape” was very bad and would be his doom if he stays in. At least 1/2 of Republican women will vote against him. It was insensative like when Dukakis about his own wife said this: Dukakis “No, I don’t, and I think you know that I’ve opposed the death penalty during all of my life”, Dukakis’s answer lacked passion and sensativity. He fell off of a cliff after that. He lost the woman vote and the manly man vote too.

How do you feel about the fact that AKIN accepted 1.5M $$ in campaign funds from the DEMS?

That’s so corrupt. The way we have to handle the DEM manipulation is to REFUSE and REFUTE
any input from the opposite party. The instant any $ comes in from the DEMS a GOOD CANDIDATE must say: Today I turned down X dollars from my opponent. Others in any campaign should be very aware of the DEM attempt to manipulate people’s votes. This is just another DIRTY TRICK, but now that we know it, and the fact that Claire McCaskill herself was putting out adds trying to bump up this guy’s chances because he would be the easiest for her to beat, shows in and of itself that she is a TOTALLY UNETHICAL WOMAN !!! (no wonder she and her husband have financial problems – are they just common criminals too? ) He’s been a REP for several terms and in the State Legislature before, I don’t think HE is a DEM plant…but I think he’s not ready for PRIME TIME and more importantly, he could cost us the SENATE, whereas Palin’s Choice: Brunner. just a thought for all those who think womens bodies cant reject conception. what about all the women who have trouble getting pregnant and are advised to avoid situations of stress (among other stuff) because they are less likely to conceive. certainly when you are placed into a situation of rape that would be the ultimate stress….so why is this possible only for those who have trouble conceiving? a bit off subject, i had my ta-ta’s pierced but my body rejected them and i had to take them out as they never healed properly. certainly there are people whose bodies do not reject foreign metal and they get to keep them. my point there is that it could be possible for some that the severe violence and stress of rape could possibly prevent a pregnancy.

He was stuck when answering the question of his stance on abortion when it comes to rape. He was trying to make it seem that it‘s not much of a problem since most women that are really raped don’t get pregnant. Their bodies see to it they don’t get pregnant. It is interesting, but he said some doctors told him that. Later on Hannity’s radio show he said he once read an article about it. Seems like a nice man, but I hope he does the right thing here by stepping down before 5pm tomorrow and give us the chance to beat the Dems in Nov.

And that is what trinklefinder was referring to . Everyone knows that it is much more difficult to get pregnant or to maintain a pregnancy when the body and mind is under severe stress.

The worse thing about the right is our immediate knee jerk reaction to kill our own wounded as soon as he/she says/does something stupid. The Dems will stand up and defend anything their side does with few exceptions. The majority of the liberals would hide or excuse their people if they witnessed one rip a live newborn baby in pieces. I think we need to be better about standing behind our people when they make honest mistakes without ruthlessly denying the evil things that occasionally happen with human beings. We shouldn’t deny/excuse evil things but we need to not turn on our people when they just mess up.

encinom: He never said women can magically end pregnancies. However he is smart enough to know and not afraid to admit it that women who are under severe stress have a lot harder time getting pregnant. Also pregnant women who are under severe stress experience a lot more spontaneous abortions and miscarriages. As far as the “legitimate rape” is concerned he was speaking about the difference between violent rapes and those “rapes” that some women report because they are ashamed of going too far with a boyfriend or use as an excuse to get an abortion with less social criticism. Also, we all know that someone who is raped at knife point by a rapist who breaks into her house at night and beats her up is a lot more emotionally and physically traumatic than when a boyfriend doesn’t stop at the last moment when his girlfriend says, “no” at the very last moment.

However, that’s not the issue in what he said. Akin wishes to redefine rape that he considers legitimate (ie, forced through violence) and discount rape he considers illegitimate (ie, through drugs, through emotional pressure, spousal rape, etc). His 2011 legislation says as much.

It also doesn’t excuse the fact that he made up science by saying that “legitimate rape” causes the woman to stop her reproductive capabilities. That’s blatantly false; as the blaze reported, at least 5% of raped women will get pregnant from their rapist every year. Ironically, as Akin also opposes the emergency contraceptive Plan B (regularly given to rape victims), that percentage would likely rise.

This isn’t about party affiliation. This guy has shot himself in the foot politically; and even had he not, he‘s used such terribly unpopular arguments that he won’t be elected. Nor should he be; no true lover of freedom in this country can look at this man and go “Yeah, he‘s totally on target when it comes to women’s reproductive health and rape.” He’s done.

Locked. I agree with Akin. Rape is when a stranger grabs a women and forces sex through threats of violence. Anything else is BS. Date rape-pfft……..GHB? yeah, maybe. Spousal rape? Please don’t make me laugh.

Glad you think drugging and raping… oh, sorry… “having sex with” a girl is not rape. Shows how classy you are. Ah, can’t forget statutory rape: you’re cool with that too. And it’s interesting you think that a woman who says “No”, begs, cries, pleads, but doesn‘t physically fight back isn’t raped.

Good Lord, save me from the immoral and foolish among my own party. With friends like you and Akin ostensibly on the side of conservatives, who needs enemies like the Democrats? You’ll kill our chances as well as any Islamist suicide bomber. Probably just as cheerfully and self-righteously as well.

I wonder if Ryan is going to campaign with him? I mean Akin and Ryan both sponsored legislation that would punish victims of rape by carrying the rapist’s baby. Ryan supported Akin when they served in the House together parroting each others‘ extreme views on woman’s rights and other social issues.

Ryan and Akin co-sponsored legislation that would prevent rape victims from receiving the morning after pill to prevent pregnancies. Ryan and Akin co-sponsored legislation that would re-classify what rape meant to limit birth control access to victims. Ryan share Akin’s views, he just been silenced on the issue by Romney’s people.

Akin and Ryan were the original co-sponsors of the controversial bill H.R. 3, “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act,” which initially included language which changed the definition of “rape” to “forcible rape,” until public pressure forced the bill’s supporters to remove that unacceptable and narrow definition. As I wrote previously, Paul Ryan is not just anti-choice, his anti-choice views are extreme and just plain bad for all women. http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/the_rumble/2012/08/todd-akin-paul-ryan-and-the-very-real-war-on-women

Additionally in 2006, Ryan voted for a bill requiring women obtaining abortions to hear about the pain their unborn child may experience. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-250_162-57493360/paul-ryans-anti-abortion-rights-record-a-target-for-obama-camp/?tag=contentMain;contentBody

A clump of cells is not a baby. Denying a women who was raped the morning after pill, punishes her with carrying the rapists child.

@enicom or monice or what ever you call yourself- Paul Ryan is a catholic, the church teaches that no abortion for cases of rape, if the victim doesn’t want to raise the child, there’s always adoption.

First, Ryan doesn’t represent only Catholics, he represents citizens of all religious backgrounds and he shouldn’t seek to pass legislation seeking to impose his religious views on others.

Second, Ryan is an extremist, Ryan sought to pass a law that would redefine rape to mean only forcible rape, there is nothing in Catholic doctrine that would support this.

It’s people like you that drag fiscal conservatives into the mud. We don’t need ignoramuses like you spouting your zealotry because you think an embryo (which produces zero brain waves) is a human being with full fledged rights. If I can unplug a brain dead relative in the hospital a woman sure as hell can unplug an embryo which has no brain from her womb. If it saves us from another encinom then all the better. I don’t want those kinds of people breading. Though I don’t want your kind breading either…

Is there a more conservative canddate who wil be able to take his place? A tea party candidate — was he a true conservative or a RINO, I’m not familiar with im as I do not live in his state. What are the choices to replace him? Would they be a viable candidate or did we just shoot ourselves in the foot? We are our worst enemies at times.

This is the first I‘ve heard from this man so I don’t know his stance on issues but he’s going to have a problem with that toothpaste. You need to get out now,I’m sure someone can step up and get the job done.
