Embattled Rep. Todd Akin on ‘GMA’: I Was ‘Medically Wrong’ About Rape Comments

Todd Akin says on Good Morning America he wont drop out of Senate race: We can win thisvideo platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player

On ABC’s “Good Morning America” today, Republican U.S. Senate Nominee Todd Akin (Mo.) attempted to further explain his recent claim that the female body has ways of  avoiding pregnancy in cases of “legitimate rape.”

GMA Anchor George Stephanopoulos asked Akin to clarify his use of the word “legitimate.”

“The word legitimate doesn’t ever have a good reason to be standing next to rape. There is no rape that is legitimate,” Akin said, “and I understand that rape is a terrible and a tragic and a violent crime and that‘s why I have apologized for using that word legitimate because it doesn’t belong there.” He added, “And I also know that I hurt people… That‘s why I’m apologizing.”

Akin also said he was “medically wrong” in stating that the female body has a mechanism for avoiding pregnancy during rape. “I understand that pregnancy can result from rape and those are terrible circumstances,” he said.

Several elected officials in the Republican Party, including GOP Chairman Reince Priebus and Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney have called on Akin to withdraw from the Senate race. Priebus has also said he would “prefer” Akin not attend the party convention next week.

As he has indicated in interviews since his controversial remark, Akin said he has no intention of dropping out of the race. “By standing on principle and putting politics aside and talking about the foundations of this country, the people of Missouri chose me to be their candidate,” he said, “and I don‘t believe it’s right for party bosses to override those voters so I think we should allow things to stand as the election process has unfolded.”

Stephanopoulos pressed Akin, asking if he would remain in the race, even if it may cost Republicans the chance of taking over the Senate. “I’m never going to say everything that can possibly happen. I don’t know the future,” said Akin, adding, “I believe we can win this race.”

On whether or not he will attend the convention, Akin said “No, I will respect those wishes [of Priebus].”

The problem with Todd Akin is he did not get the memo. This election, the election of 2012 is about unemployment, national debt, entiltlement reform, and when asked about other subjects he should not participate. I’m not a politician but I know that every conservative running for office should be discussing the economy.

For this reason alone he qualifies as lacking in judgement. I’m so happy he is Pro-Life, a subject that will not be resolved in the next 2,000 years. The abortion debate and peace in the middle east will be resolved at about the same moment in time. Maybe we could resolve the worst economy in seventy years since that might be a possibility. The smart conservative politician will concentrate on battles that can be won today and Todd Akin is an example of a person that does not know how to even answer a simple question.

Here is the way you answer the questions designed to distract from the message. “Yes that subject is very important but the main issue we should concentrate on is how to help the private sector increase jobs, so we can increase revenue, and reduce debt. That was not so difficult was it ????

      1. Weather analogies
Federal Judge James Leon Holmes, a Bush appointee, said in an article published circa 1997: “Concern for rape victims is a red herring because conceptions from rape occur with approximately the same frequency as snowfall in Miami.”

      2. “Hormonal response”
From the Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch, 2006, via Democratic Underground:
“I think that life begins when the chromosomes of the sperm and egg line up,” said Dr. Richard Dobbins, who works in the emergency department at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Kenton.
Dobbins also questioned the need for emergency contraception in rape cases, saying that most women either are not fertile during assault or do not become pregnant because the trauma prompts a hormonal response that prevents ovulation.
“So if they do get pregnant, they wanted it, is that it?” a reproductive-rights advocate in the audience asked.
      4. Secretions
      From the Philadelphia Inquirer, 1988:
The odds that a woman who is raped will get pregnant are “one in millions and millions and millions,” said state Rep. Stephen Freind, R-Delaware County, the Legislature’s leading abortion foe.
The reason, Freind said, is that the traumatic experience of rape causes a woman to “secrete a certain secretion” that tends to kill sperm.

The odds of a virgin giving birth are even smaller but a lot of people on this site beleive it happened. Would you tell your daughters that the “pull out” method works, or if the girl is on top gravity will keep you from getting pregnant? As far as legitamate rape, let‘s just have Sharia law if there isn’t 5 men to wittness the rape it never happened. Call the Bull on both sides.

ok. it’s not just that Akin said a horrible thing…it’s that he BELIEVED a horrible thing! And no–I don’t think his beliefs or understanding magically changed overnight just because of the backlash. talk about the war on women! That‘s usually ’lefty’ territory! I have never heard a conservative say such a heinous thing in defense of the right to life movement. I am pro-life myself, also a survivor of sexual abuse–and what he said and the views he has held for decades–are so horrifically offensive as to be indefensible. Apology or not–there is ZERO recovery from this for him–politically speaking. I hope and pray that he gets things right with God–and that he truly learns compassion and understanding…but his political career is and SHOULD be over! All the people defending him on the hairpin trigger of pro-life–is this REALLY the guy you want advocating in Washington on this issue??? NO! There are ways to love and care for BOTH mother and child in these horrific instances where rape results in pregnancy…how this guy approached it?? Um. NOT it! He is a completely delusional narcissist to persist in this race. He has landed a terrible blow to the Conservatives AND the pro-Life movement in our country! He is being rightfully shamed.

This whole hullabaloo over a legitimate phrase emphasizes the mental midgetry of our society! There are many cases of falsely claimed rape, those are all illegitimate. The violence of an actual rape does not provide a conducive setting for conception to occur. Having said this, occasionally pregnancy is the result of a rape.

I stand amazed and disgusted as I watch both the Repubs and the Dems try to make political hay out of grass that is way to short to mow!! ENOUGH ALREADY!!!!!!

Pregnancy that occurs from rape is VERY rare, indeed and the numbers prove that. Liberals always USE rape to support their views on ABORTION. If a guy BEATS his wife and she leaves him while she’s pregnant, is that the baby’s fault? Should that baby be aborted, too? I think it’s never the child’s fault. I think this guy just did not use the correct wording to get his message across. I forgive him and so should everyone else. Liberals have said a LOT worse without all the hoopla!
Here a woman conceived during rape, explains how to present the case using the proper terminology. Kiessling was conceived when her mother was victimized by a rapist. A MUST READ http://www.lifenews.com/2012/08/20/woman-conceived-in-rape-responds-to-akin-abortion-controversy/

Don‘t tell me you or someone you know hasn’t had his life destroyed by a woman who LIED about being raped or sexually molested. I HAVE and I know that it destroys people, it destroys families, it destroys futures. Trying to disprove a lie is practically fruitless. People believe the woman without looking at the details. There is such a thing as Date Rape and such a thing as “I regret having said Yes so I’m going to report my shameful act as Rape“ and also ”Morning After Regret Rape“ and never forget the ”OH GAWD, I missed my period Rape” ….. and the male is always jumped on but the woman’s past indiscretions are ignored. REAL RAPE is when the woman says NO or when she’s overpowered. Women tease men and tell the man it‘s ’okay‘ or ’I‘m protected’ or ‘wear protection’ or whatever ALL THE TIME and have second day-after thoughts and call the mutual consent “rape.” Well, there is FAKE RAPE and why in the world someone doesn’t explain that to the Media and those who want to jump on this man is beyond me. NO FLAMES, you know I am not ‘misspeaking’ here.

I don’t, truthfully. I’ve read stories (like the Duke Lacrosse story), but I have never actually met someone in real life who has been falsely accused. I have met a few who claimed to be, though knowing their personalities I tend to side with the women (as did the police; one poor girl was beat half to death).

On the flip side, are you saying you don’t know a single woman who has been raped? If you know more than seven women, odds are you do.

Akin would disagree. If there aren’t bruises, or it isn’t statutory rape done by a relative, he doesn’t consider it legitimate. Saying “No” is not criteria for rape according to his past legislation.

Todd Akin says, to hell with what’s best for the country, I‘m doing what’s in MY best interest!

That‘s exactly what he did and we’ll see if his gamble paid off,I thought it was too risky for him to stay in and he should have gotten out,we’ll see if he made the right call.

Slayer, this isn’t about rape or abortion, it’s about winning the Senate and the White House. This clown not only isn’t helping, he’s hurting our chances of either one happening!

Gonzo: I agree with you but find it more than annoying that if JOE BIDEN had said something equally as stupid, the media would have not even noticed. The Lefty media is the conservative’s biggest opponent in this race.

Barber it’s not fair, we know the game is rigged against us, but bitching about it does us no good. The guy needs to go because we need that seat PERIOD.

I admire Mr Akins for his admitting his error, something Washington could learn from. The RNC needs to let the people of Missouri decide who they wish to vote for. I believe that if they voted for him in the first place to go up against McCaskill then the RNC needs to step aside and let the people of Missouri vote. Unless to the RNC, the peoples vote doesn’t matter.

Actually, he ran in a three-way contest in the Republican primary and just beat out two other conservatives. He was NOT supported by the Tea Party Express. Claire McCaskill ran $1.5 million in ads the last few weeks touting him as the most conservative — not to scare voters but to get conservatives to vote for him. Also, in Missouri, you can cross over partyline and vote. So, many Democrats voted for Akin, knowing that he‘d be easier to beat and that he’d probably say something stupid. This was an unforced error on his part; what happens when he gets in debates? He seems like an honest guy who is just in way over his head.

That’s kinda the problem the RNC has stepped aside.
They’re not giving him any Money. already said so.
He doesn’t have much left from his Primary.
It’s probably in Claire McCaskill best interest to send him
a few bucks just to keep him in the race.
Claire mcCaskill has changed her Retirement Plans in
      the last couple days

I’m getting sick and tired of this guy getting crucified over this comment.

I mean ….you want to talk about “ CRAZY TALK ”

We have half a country that says a baby…. IS NOT A HUMAN LIVING BABY…

    UNTIL AFTER………………………………..THE BABY IS BORN…!

    Now that is …..“CRAZY TALK”…!
