Todd Akin Holds First Presser Since ‘Legitimate Rape’ Remarks, Reaffirms He‘s ’Here to Win’ in MO Race

Rep. Todd Akin Holds First Presser, Reaffirms He Will Stay in Missouri Senate Race

Todd Akin (AP)

CHESTERFIELD, Mo. (TheBlaze/AP) — Embattled Missouri Congressman Todd Akin is reaffirming plans to stay in Missouri’s U.S. Senate race despite a political uproar over remarks he made about rape and pregnancy.

Akin held his first press conference in Missouri on Friday since top GOP leaders called on him to get out of the race because of his remarks that aired on a St. Louis TV station five days ago.

He told reporters he’s in the race against Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill through the November election and he’s in it to win. He says he’ll soon resume regular campaign events.

“Apparently, there’s some people who are having trouble understanding our message. I’d like to be clear on that today — that we’re going to be here through the November election, and we’re going to be here to win,” Akin said.

“There may be some negotiations,” he added, “but they don’t include me.”

Akin has been apologizing and seeking online donations since remarking last Sunday that women’s bodies have ways of avoiding pregnancy in cases of what he called “legitimate rape.”

He didn’t directly address those remarks Friday.

“Your recent support gave me the courage I needed to fight on, thank you for standing with me, and supporting my campaign to defeat Claire McCaskill,” Akin said in a fundraising message prior to the conference.

Campaign spokesman Ryan Hite confirmed that Akin was forging ahead with his campaign, just as the six-term congressman has insisted he would do despite calls from top Republicans for him to drop out of the race.

After winning the GOP primary in August, Akin had gained quick backing from national Republican and conservative groups focused on ousting McCaskill. But that support withered after Akin was asked in an interview that aired Sunday on a St. Louis television station whether his general opposition to abortion extended to women who have been raped.

“From what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare,” Akin said of a woman becoming pregnant from rape. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

The chairman of the Republican National Committee urged Akin to quit the Senate race, as did presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, his vice presidential pick Paul Ryan and every living Republican who has represented Missouri in the Senate.

Akin apologized repeatedly on national radio and TV shows while acknowledging his original remarks were wrong. He also has been running a 30-second apology ad on TV stations across the state.

But until Friday, Akin has remained largely out of sight in Missouri. He went to Ohio to film his apology ad at the office of his media strategist. Then he went to Florida, where he met with fellow conservatives who had gathered in advance of the Republican National Convention.

He may be a fine conservative. I don’t know, I‘m not in MO and don’t follow him specifically. But for the sake of the nation, he needs to step aside. It‘s just too important and apparently he doesn’t recognize it. He’s not going to be able to campaign. Every speech he gives or every place he goes, the only topic will be THE topic that he is now known for. For the sake of the United States of America, he needs to step aside honorably and recognize the magnitude of the election.

I have mixed feelings about it because I fear losing the senate seat. I have confidence in Akin and his voting record is solid~ the opposite of McCaskill who voted with Obama on everything. It is unfortunate that this happened but it has been blown out of proportion. He made a stupid statement but I trust him as a senator. He is committed to overturning Obamacare which should be the number one issue this election (not abortion). I hope voters are smart enough to take in the whole picture and not be influenced by the chain reaction of panic and smears. He is a good person who has a solid conservative voting record (against all the stimulus, obamacare, patriotic act, etc). McCaskill hid her airplane to avoid taxes on it and voted with Obama on everything. She would not listen to the people of Missouri when they disagreed with her position on Obamacare and was arrogant about it. Akin has a Pro-Life position that he will not soften for votes. He is not an establishment pick and was originally a grass roots pick. If he had resigned I would be fine voting for the replacement. If he stays, I am voting for him. I trust him in spite of the ridiculous comments he made that day.

He needs to step down, it is as simple as that. People do not realize that there are Independents in MO that won’t vote for this guy. He is only watching out for his own self interests. Rasmussen had him 3-5 points ahead of McCaskill before the gaffe and now he is 10 points behind. It moved from a leaning republican state to a safe Democratic state for the Senate seat. Akin’s baggage is spilling over into the other GOP races including the presidential race. Our country can not afford for the GOP to lose what should have been an easy race.

McCaskills group spent over 1.5 million in ads propping up Akin during the primaries and the liberals are probably funneling him money to give him a false sense of hope. Personally,I think he is on the take.

I would like to know how losing this race to Clare McCaskill is helping to repeal Obamacare and advance pro-life causes?

I live in Mo. and voted for Akin. I dont care what the B.S polls say, but Akin will win. I have talked to many people about Akin and he has not lost any support from them. I will still vote for him, even though I dont agree with what he said about rape. If you lived in Mo., you would see hmuch we despise McCaskill. What you are seeing from the so called Republicans & media is that they are really progressives too. Akin is a member of the Tea party Caucus in congress & is a strong supporter of shutting down the Dept. of Ed. & Dept of Energy and a smaller govt. with a balanced budget. The GOP wont even attempt to get rid of the DOE. So this is why the GOP is trying to eat one of their own. Akin will win, I have no doubt.

yet another case where conservatives let the MSM lead them around by the nose. We let them pick our candidates, and we let them get us excited over stupid stuff.

Basically the senator quoted bad stats about the rate in which women get pregnant when raped. If not mistaken, the stat is around 6%. Bottom line up front, he believes abortion to be bad, and he also supports the family, and is against gay marriage. This is why the libs and the MSM are gong after him.

Bill Clinton was accused of rape, and the MSM never cared. He violated a young intern in the oval office, and the media never cared. Ted Kenedy murdered a woman, and left her in the bottom of a river over night, and the MSM never cared.

This issue is stupid, and once again conservatives are getting douped.

I DO NOT BELIEVE that Todd Akins statements “WERE A GAFF” – He is to intelligent and articulate. Not to mention an engineering grad, vice-president of his freshman class in Congress, a member of the Science, Budget, and Armed Forces Committees, Chairman of the Sea power and Projection Forces Subcommittee and on and on..I think his statements were staged and he is deliberately harming the Republican brand. But Why? Is he secretly working with the Democratic party to make certain that Claire McCaskill wins? Was he paid off? THERE IS SOMETHING VERY WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE…

I’m tired of people saying RINOs want Akin to drop out. Nearly every Republican and conservative and Tea Party group want him to drop out. If this election weren’t so important, people wouldn’t have so gotten on his case. But the fact that the comment was so utterly stupid and indefensible, and since we found out McCaskill actively tried to get this guy to win the nomination b/c she figured she’d have the best chance of beating him (she figured right), and since the balance of the Senate and the country could hang on this one seat… he’s probably not a bad guy, but he is utterly selfish and foolish for not dropping out. He doesn’t need to be a Senator.

The one positive thing that may result from this, as Rush Limbaugh pointed out, is this will help make the DNC’s focus the war on women and “reproductive rights”, which will hopefully backfire in their faces, since most Americans share the stance that Romney has.

And, as stupid as Akin is, and as much as he ****** me off, and as selfish as I feel he is… if God doesn’t knock him in the head and tell him to switch with the woman running for his House seat, then I do hope he wins and gets support back. Missourians I’m sure are appalled at his comments, but surely they can forgive him if it means repealing Obamacare and saving the country…

However where was the media outcry on the news over the resignation of the Dem. Rep. who stepped down this past week for an incident with a 17year old male. One person spoke wrong and we jump to polish our halos and through him to the lions and the other side says nothing about a physical incident with a minor and the press for got it happen.
It is time for the Republican Party to stand up and behind our candidates better, our guy even apologized and what he said though silly was actually recorded years back in print as a fact or opinion. Enough.

What makes me sick is the republicans eating their own. A democrat will can walk through a mine field and hit everyone one and not have to answer for it because they have no morals and will lie in your face. I dont think Akin should have apologized, he should have explained his comment. a democrat would have. I quit listening to so called conservative talk show hosts that are prolonging this issue for personal gain.
If conservatives cant weather this, they dont deserve the majority.

“What makes me sick is the republicans eating their own”

What planet do you live on? Akin did this to himself, he has no one else to blame. Republicans want to actually win in November. Do you?

      Rassmussen 8-24
      McCaskill 48%
      Akin 38%

      SNAP OUT OF IT!!!

      Im with you.
It was a stupid comment – (Woman can “wish” themselves un-pregnant) — but holy cow…..
If we kicked out every person in Washington for saying something stupid it would be a ghost town.

It’s too late to get anyone else in the race, he will probably be a casuality but conservatives/teaparty members need to fight or die. How many chances are you gonna give the msm to come around, even Fox feels obliged to knock conservatives 2 to one over liberals. The pendulem has swung so far left that the the extreme right wing is left of JFK.
Grow a spine, get behind people that have their heart in the game, if not their mouth. Akin is our Orange juice can.

The Republicans didn’t eat their own.

Nationalist Progressive Socialists in the Republican Party have been trying to eat a Tea Party (Constitutional Conservative) candidate and they’re choking on it.

Exactly, there’s a reason why McCaskill put money towards his campaign.

She knew he was too psycho to run as a “legitimate” contender in a general election.

Just once I would like to see a politician get up and say “I’m in this to lose, I am not qualified, and I just want to raise as much money as possible. I don’t want the job, I am just trying to scam you people.” Just once, be honest.

Akin’s remarks were those of another “generation”…it showed he does not have the WISDOM and ability to be ready for PRIME TIME… he’s just another political hack – not so smart at that.

Obama has gained 3 points…McCaskill looks viable again…all due to this jerk. He combs his hair over!!
How much more do I need to say than that?? I don’t care if dopes gave him $ 200+ K …he’s been asked NOT to attend the GOP convention, yet he’s gone anyway…he’s ignored the wishes of all of the party heads…ALL OF THEM…he thinks he is something special. No he’s not. What he is is an egomaniac who’d rather risk our control of the Senate and WH simply because he feel so necessary. Who would knowing that his very opponent from the opposite party had plied his race with more than $1M… there comes a time when people have to own what they say and deal with the consequences.
A write in would only insure McCaskill win…so I hope that all of the reasonable GOP MO. members can persuade this comb-over hot-shot to step down. NOTE TO PARTY: Do not ever back a man so vain that he would comb over his hair. WOMEN HATE IT!!! MEN LAUGH AT IT. IT SHOWS VANITY over and above the average.

Akin is not a moron. He’s worse. He’s a typical politician!!! It’s all about him and screw the constituents, cause or party.
I can’t tell you how disappointed I am that I ever cast one vote for him. I thought he was a man of honor and character.
When are we going to learn you can not trust a dirtbag “lifer” politician. Two terms and your out, PERIOD!

Remember folks, these Dems who are making a big deal about this are the same ones who are permitting Pres. Bill Clinton, a man who had been charged with rape and other crimes against women, to speak at the Democratic Convention. The Dems vilified Clinton’s supposed victim.
Further, when Ted Kennedy’s nephew was charged with rape, the Dems supported him and vilified the victim, a young girl.
    Disgusting and hypocritical.
Hey Dems – if you have any self respect, un-invite Clinton.
