Todd Akin Pulls a No-Show on ‘Piers Morgan Tonight’, Host Dubs Him a ‘Gutless Little Twerp’

Piers Morgan opened his CNN show on Monday night with a wide shot of an empty chair — originally reserved for Rep. Todd Akin, now under fire for his controversial “legitimate rape” remarks. Morgan explained to his audience that Akin pulled out of the scheduled interview at the last minute.

“Good evening. You’re looking live at the empty chair that Todd Akin was supposed to be sitting in for a live prime time exclusive interview,” Morgan began.

Todd Akin Pulls a No Show on Piers Tonight, Piers Morgan Calls Him Gutless Little Twerp

The six-term Missouri GOP congressman cancelled the interview “at the last possible moment, leaving us and you looking at an empty chair. It’s a very nice empty chair, but it remains an empty chair,” Morgan said.

Morgan then gave the congressman an “open invitation” to come back on his show, throwing in a harsh insult in the process.

“Congressman, you have an open invitation to join me in that chair whenever you feel up to it. Because if you don’t keep your promise to appear on the show, then you are, what we would call in Britain, a gutless little twerp,” he said.

He later asked Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) to weigh in on the issue. She said Akin and vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan are “like two peas in a pod, have endorsed the same legislation, that would limit women’s rights to access to contraception. That would make even rape and incest not reasons for having an abortion.”

Morgan agreed with his guest and argued that Romney’s decision to pick Ryan as his running mate was his “worst nightmare.”

“It’s gone right back to the social conservative issues he was so desperate to move off on. And the reason he’s so desperate to move off is that on abortion, for example, he has carried out one of the great flip-flops in political history,” Morgan added.

And just to make sure everyone was aware of Akin’s no-show throughout the show, a small box in the corner of the screen stayed on the shot of the empty chair throughout the segment.

Just to recap what the controversy is all about: During a television interview on Sunday, Akin said that women who are victims of “legitimate rape” are unlikely to become pregnant, citing “doctors” as his source. He has found no support within the Republican party and many have urged him to withdraw from his congressional race against Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill.

Even though he has apologized for his remarks and says he “misspoke,” the media has not relented. Akin has insisted he will stay in the race, however, some reports have claimed the opposite.

Apparently, I’m on the side of this issue that believes this has been blown out of proportion. The only thing I can see that might legitimately offend people is his remarks of a women’s body rejecting pregnancy after being raped, but that’s his own opinion, and I don’t recall him saying it was an undeniable fact. I don‘t know if it’s true, and there apparently hasn’t been much thorough research on that issue, so I’d take it as an opinion from either side of the political spectrum.

Also, I‘d like to see a study of adults who were the result of rape and see how they’ve fared in life and if they would’ve preferred to have been aborted.

What if the child became a great man or woman who had a profound impact on the world? What then?

As for Piers, he is clearly an arrogant man. I’d of had some respect for him if he acted gracious about it, considering the ‘controversy’ and all. But hey, I’ve learned most liberals hate God, so I don’t expect them to be very gracious (unless they get public praise for doing so.) Just my thoughts on the matter.

This is nothing more than ..
‘keep the focus off the socialist/communist liberal politicians” ..

This election is about replacing every single one of them communist dirt bags.!!!.

We need to flush everyone of them out and send them to the unemployment line…

Like PELOSI walking around with a twenty pound gavel and saying :

Todd Akin could have been dancing around in a tutu while making this
comment and I still would vote for him over any Dem.

The GOP’S marching song this election should be ‘flush the commies”..

I agree… a bit out of proportion. The opposite of “legitimate” is “false”… and as such in this case, a pejorative. IMHO, It appears to me that Akins was attempting to clarify the claim of rape such as when “RAPE” is claimed and the accused are guilty before proven innocent (i.e. Duke Lacrosse). “Rape” is a crime and always negative. If someday, Abortion is legal only in the cases of “Rape” or “Incest”, their will be the possibility of many more claims of “Rape” in order to achieve an abortion. If “Rape” is claimed, then how will the law be written? Of course it should come down hard on the “Rapist”, but as traumatic as it is, should we be expecting the victim to report the rape within a certain amount of time??? This will always be controversial.

I agree with you that this has been completely blown out of proportion. I heard the Liberal chatter on MSNBC radio on my way to the store, but didn’t hear what Todd Akin had supposedly done. Now I know, after searching to hear the whole conversation.

But, I don’t understand what his unforgivable sin was! The subject was abortion! It appeared to me that in his various scenarios, he was answering the question of what would make abortion acceptable to him. He acknowledged she could take a “morning after pill” in one scenario, but that may not work. So, he OK’d that, but said the child shouldn’t have to die. — the rapist should be held accountable and imprisoned, not the child having to lose his life. He maintained his pro-life stance. Period, the end.

I perfectly understood what he meant when he said “legitimate” rape. He was not discussing the act/crime itself, but the excuse that has been used, of women/young girls getting an abortion to appear innocent to parents, family or husbands, once pregnancy was discovered.

Misspeaking hasn’t kept Dems from holding their offices, (or gaffes or outright lies!) and Blaze readers need to understand how innocent this really was!

Missouri desperately needs Claire McCaskill gone.

      @Hereandnow

Luckily we have Akin’s record to look at, and doing so reveals that, no, he’s not referring to “false” rape like Duke, but any rape that is not forced by violence. This includes, among others, date rape, spousal rape, rape involving drugs, and statutory rape. Akin’s HR 3 bill would deny emergency contraception (Plan B, which he considers an abortion-producing drug… incorrectly, I might add) and the right to an abortion to any woman “raped” in this way, by redefining it so that this is no longer rape.

I can understand his point: he’s pro-life in all cases. It’s just repulsive that he needs to throw victims under the bus to make that point however.

It’s not his stance on abortion that has him in trouble. It’s his extreme lack of judgement in fielding a softball question with an extremely poor choice of words. Akin’s situation is entirely self-inflicted. It was the political equivalent of Seppeku. I can easily forgive his mistake. But the damage he has done in providing ammunition against both the Pro-life movement and the Republican party that is keen on gaining control of our senate back from the Do Nothing Democrats, has pretty much everyone intent on replacing him. By “continuing the fight” he only damages those around him further. He wins the political darwin award for the year, beating Joe Biden gaffe for gaffe.

So he can toot his own horn about what he thinks? His opinion is irrelevant in the big scheme of things considering the Supreme Court has ruled on Roe Vs. Wade and it’s not gonna change anytime soon. Why start a firestorm that also effects the Presidential election, the Dems are already out this morning linking his opinions with Ryan even if that is nonsense. He should step aside at this point. Yeah… know what that statistic is? 3% of cases where the woman claiming rape and was found to have lied. By all means, let’s denigrate the other 97%.

“Let’s not do any research into Akins opinion, let’s all have a knee jerk reaction to what people MAY think. After all, some people’s opinions are much more important than others. Jeeez louise!”

Akin’s opinion (which was apparently founded by nameless doctors) is that a woman who gets pregnant from rape was not “legitimately raped.” Your linked article did nothing to disprove that; it talks about how there‘s an unknown factor that may inhibit fertility if that woman hasn’t had sex with the same man recently. However, the statistics themselves say both you and Akin are full of it: 5% of raped women become pregnant.

Christ Almighty, if we can’t call out our own members for own scientifically unfounded and morally bankrupt views (or worse: if we defend them like you are), how in the world is anyone supposed to take us seriously when we call out of the Democrats on theirs?

Not to mention that using “legitimate” in that sense is a strawman. Akin’s “legitimate” refers to what he thinks is the only actual type of rape: violent rape. He does not count spousal rape, date rape, or drugged rape, for example. If a woman says no, he says that‘s enough for him to say she didn’t consent.

Don‘t give importance to Akin’s blab. Team Obama‘s calculated strategy is to divert the attention of voters from burning issues and to focus on flimsy issues such as ’rape,‘ ’tax evasion,’ etc., America is seething in economic recession and unemployment. Obama’s impotence has been exposed in the Syrian crisis. He has lavishly given several billion dollars of loan to Morsi’s Egypt, and he is now emerging as another Khomeini and the Muslim Brotherhood Egypt shows signs of another Iran. Taking advantage of Obama’s weakness, Putin wants to revive the old Soviet union. Unless Americans elect a strong president like Angara, America is earmarked for a collapse.

They weren’t given the time of day. and on top of that , this
administration continually discredited Fox-News and other
conservative News outlets, and the people that watched them ,
almost on a daily basis .So why would we give credence to any
liberal news outlet or any liberal mouthpiece like Morgan,?
Going into what I believe is going to be the biggest transfer in
      power we have ever seen.

And Now we have people such as yourself, that know the left
is in trouble. So to deflect from everything that they have been
doing for the last 3 1/2 plus years ,they are trying to point a finger
and pretend their all fair and balanced..
I cant seam to distinguish the difference between a Liberal Democrat
from a manipulative hypocrite. They appear to be one and the same.

Hi MONK, I’ve noticed that. Flipping through the channels to check out other news channels it’s fun to watch them.
Yeah, most of those lefty newsies will do their best to make a conservative candidate look off his rocker. But as long as he holds his own and does not get flustered he’ll probably get his message across to those who matter. The independents who are watching. Otherwise, they tend to only feed the desires of the left’s base during the interview, and with the backstabbing after he leaves.

      BRUCE P. –
“ANONYMOUS — So, you don’t think Republicans should go on shows where their ideas are going to face scrutiny and defend those ideas?”

Be honest with yourself for once. I know it’s hard. These shows aren’t about honest discussion and scrutiny of ideas. They’re set up as inquisitions with the purpose of destroying Republicans. David Gregory attacks for 10 minutes – not one pertinent question, almost all garbage, then a panel of four liberals sits around the table like vultures feeding off the scraps. Until they act like mature reporters, Romney and Ryan should stay away from them. I’ts counterproductive and cheapens them to go on the ABC/CBS/NBC/CNN/MSNBC shows. FOX News has adults perfectly willing to discuss the issues and not the garbage.

That’s true. He’s torn himself apart quite well already.

      @DRKEV

I watch Rachel Maddow, and every time she is actually able to book a Republican guest, they have a very good discussion.

She talked with the campaign manager of Rick Santorum many times.

I think it’s more the other way. Conservatives know they will got coddled on Fox News so they are more eager to do a stint on one of those shows then anywhere else.

I hate having to agree with a Puss pocket Liberal but I have no choice on one point, Akin is a gutless Twerp for not having the courage to defend himself and if he can’t stand up for himself why would anybody think he would stand up for them. Now, as for the attempt to say he’s like Paul Ryan is simply a shameful attempt at slandering a good person. Every man should have a taste of power before their thru and when THE BLAZE puts all these shill networks out of business he might be able to get a job here sweeping the studios of real Journalists.

      As does Romney.

Ryan co-sponsored bills with this guy and they both have said they want a person-hood amendment to the Constitution.

That dog won’t hunt. NOTICE THAT ROMNEY was first right out of the chute to say this guy was dead-wrong and he did not agree with one word he said. GOOD TRY, no cigar.

Well….without abortion on demand for the last few decades, we’d have almost 60 MILLION additional taxpaying consuming potential business owning job creating citizens within our population ranks.

That’s potentially hundreds of billions in lost revenue potential. THAT is the REAL cost of abortion.

I’m an abortion survivor, so if it bothers you that I’m both happy to be alive, and happy to fight for the chance of others to get that chance as well, then go (BLEEP) yourself.

Sincerely, an Atheist Tea Party Independent voter.

    Akin brought this on himself.

The Senate doesn’t need any more idiots than it already has.

    ———-

Akin needs to not only back out of his senate nomination he also needs to resign from the house. NOW.

We conservatives must not tolerate this kind of idiocy and ignorance.

Akin needs to be raped in order to see how his body responds…
