Todd Akin Releases New ‘Apology’ Ad for Rape Comments

ST. LOUIS (AP/TheBlaze) — On a day when his political future might be decided, Rep. Todd Akin of Missouri is airing a new television advertisement apologizing again for his comments that women can somehow prevent pregnancy after “legitimate rapes.”

“The mistake I made was in the words I said, not in the heart I hold,” Akin says in the ad.

Akin faces a 5 p.m. deadline Tuesday to decide whether he will withdraw from his Senate race against Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill. He has been pressured by some Republican leaders to leave the race since making his comments during a TV interview Sunday.

In an advertisement airing Tuesday, Akin says he used the “wrong words in the wrong way” and asked for voters’ forgiveness. He calls rape an evil act and acknowledges it can lead to pregnancy.

Akin does not comment in the ad on whether he plans to stay in the race. However, Dashiell Bennett at the Atlantic argues that this ad is evidence that Akin plans to stay in the race.

How Akin plans to defeat Claire McCaskill without support from most major conservative organizations, or the National Republican Senatorial Committee, is an open question, but he may not have as hard a time of it as some think. A poll taken by Public Policy Polling following Akin’s remarks shows that he still leads McCaskill by 1 point.

There you go again playing God and believing you know Paul Ryan’s heart and mind! So, another man defiles himself with what came out of his month (But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the HEART; and they defile the man Mt. 15:18) and somehow you accuse Paul Ryan of being equally despicable? What has Mr. Ryan said to merit the comparison? (Ryan provable quotes accepted only) What kind of math were you taught? 2+2=5? You got to ask yourself how your mind has become so twisted!

Everyone is hysterical (word used INTENTIONALLY) over his remark and totally missing his main points, which are factual, pro-life positions:
      1) pregnancy from rape is rare (b/c of the physical damage caused in many cases)
      2) 2 wrongs don’t make a right (killing a baby b/c it is the result of a rape: rape was wrong #1, killing a baby #2)

Should we kill a quadriplegic who is hit by a drunk driver?! Same thing. Bot are innocent victims.
Obviously, rape resulting in pregnancy is not impossible. That wasn’t the point. (BTW, I just heard a nurse say she was taught this idea that the trauma of rape prevents or otherwise spontaneously aborts the result of rape naturally in the 70‘s or 60’s… maybe this is what he heard of. Is is true? I dunno.)

Rape is a horrible crime, not just because of the physical assault, but the potential for lasting physical and emotional scars due to a pregnancy, or an abortion. He didn’t say it “just right” so he should be crucified? The RINO’s are jumping him, b/c he was not their chosen one, and even conservatives not familiar with the race are joining, out of ignorance. Is it not true that some claims of rape are, in fact, untrue as well?

Maybe it would be wise to allow the primary runner up to take over. Maybe not. I haven’t seen the polls, so I couldn’t say. But the hysteria needs to stop, if R’s want to win this seat. He doesn’t need friendly fire on top of everything else. Make the arguments to step down in privat

Okay, from a radio news report that I heard late last night, the fact that Akins is the current candidate is something of another Democrat victory. Missouri is an OPEN PRIMARY state, meaning that anybody can vote in either primary, but you can vote only once. The tactic was the Dems would get behind the weakest Republican in the running with their voting support. McCaskill is the I-N-C-U-M-B-A-N-T (will explain that spelling in a moment) and there was no need to vote for her. Something of never letting an opportunity get away from you.
Found out from somebody else that The Blaze filters our certain words. Most become a series of stars such as ****. But, any post with a word that contains the word C-U-M in it is completely filtered out. We’ve noticed a lot of people complaining lately about having their posts deleted, and this may be the problem. Posts with the word I-N-C-U-M-B-A-N-T, and C-I-R-C-U-M-S-T-A-N-C-E and any other word with those three letters together are just never posted. Hope, they get this fixed soon.

I think he was originally talking about the difference between “statutory” (voluntary but still illegal rape) and “legitimate” (non-voluntary and illegal rape). He could have used a much better word to make his point.

Anyways, his “tone” of indifference was what really got people so mad IMHO. He seems to be a person that is rather stoic and lacking emotions.

Well the so-called brainiacs are having a field day with this. I personally think the man should stay in the race. The sky isn’t falling so all you TV show hosts & talk radio hosts just simmer down. Abortion is either right or it is wrong. Take your path and stick with it. There is no maybe or exceptions. Abortion picks winners & losers so does man or God have that sole judgment? I saw a young lady on TV that was a beautiful product of rape and she questioned why she would be judged unfit to be walking among us. I say she has a God given right to walk among us even though man does not agree with God. So who do you follow?

Even if he is wrong, it makes everyone else feel “soooo smart” if they can jump all over him. Pathetic. @Tigress

“If you look at what he really said, he said pregnancy from legitimate rapes is RARE.”

      What he truly said:
“First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape is] really rare,” Akin, who’s running to unseat Sen. Claire McCaskill, told KTVI-TV in an interview posted Sunday. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

He continued, “But let‘s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something — you know, I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child.”

      1. Pregnancy from rape is rare. Sure. 5% is rare.
      2. The concept of “legitimate rape.” Oh boy, now there’s a story. A lot of people have said he’s differentiating between women who cry wolf (3% of all reported rapes) and “legitimate” rape (92%; 5% are unfounded but not necessarily the woman lying). Statistics from FBI crime stats, by the way. HOWEVER, I don’t think this is true; Akin sponsored legislation redefining rape as only being violent rape. This discards other forms such as spousal, date rape, drugged rape, and statutory rape. Starting to see the outrage?
      3. The body can’t shut that down: it’s a myth. As we’ve told you multiple times. Akin lied, or believes fake science.
      4. But no matter whether it’s legitimate or not, he’s against rape in all cases. Fair enough.

So, no, “rape is rare” is NOT all that he really said.

      @Selj

“pregnancy from rape is rare (b/c of the physical damage caused in many cases)”

Here’s an idea: how about we don’t put nonsensical medical ideas into play here and just keep it to “pregnancy from rape is rare.” It’s 5% on average (and that includes those who are raped and get emergency contraceptives; without that, it would likely be higher). We don‘t always know why it’s rare, but “because of physical damage” is likely not a huge factor. Many rapes are non-violent, done through coercion, threats, drugs, or alcohol. In fact, alcohol plays the biggest factor, with about half of all rapes occurring when one or both people have been drinking.

Spousal rape (which Akin doesn’t believe is “legitimate”) is actually usually more violent than rape by a stranger (about half the women raped by their husband are beaten immediately before, during, or after).

Everyone makes mistakes. When I heard the video of him saying “Legitimate Rape” I assumed he meant “Real Rape” instead of the cases where a wife cheats and declares rape when she gets pregnant, or when the teen is scared and claims rape so she don’t get in trouble for getting pregnant.
Or when the white woman has a black baby but a white boyfriend.

I just think its getting blown way out of proportion, considering things people like Ted Kennedy and Bill Clinton have actually done are much worse than just making a stupid comment and they would both be re-elected today if the media had their way.

Todd Akin should not have apologized. I remembered hearing something similar to what he said about the human body being able to “resist” pregnancy under trauma.

“Finally, factor in what is certainly one of the most important reasons why a rape victim rarely gets pregnant, and that’s physical trauma. Every woman is aware that stress and emotional factors can alter her menstrual cycle. To get and stay pregnant a woman’s body must produce a very sophisticated mix of hormones. Hormone production is controlled by a part of the brain that is easily influenced by emotions. There’s no greater emotional trauma that can be experienced by a woman than an assault rape. This can radically upset her possibility of ovulation, fertilization, implantation and even nurturing of a pregnancy.”

    Source: http://www.christianliferesources.com/article/rape-pregnancies-are-rare-461

I guess this subject is taboo also. Akin simply made the mistake of not sticking with society’s “consensus”. I’m not saying that women cannot get pregnant during rape, but I think it is possible that the stress can do enormous damage. If stress can cause a miscarriage, it also might prevent a pregnancy.

Would they rather study crayfish on treadmills? I would bet any money that there are plenty of medical doctors that believe this is true, (and other sources that report it) they just don’t want to come out and say it and jeopardize their careers!

… that’s your source? They say right in the article “Well, we don’t know, so let’s pick and choose some random numbers.”

“Some feminists have claimed as high as 5 to 10 percent, which is absurd. One problem has been the lack of available studies and accurate statistics. Often women do not admit to having been raped. On the other hand, it has been known that women, pregnant from consensual intercourse, have later claimed rape. Is it possible to know the actual facts?”

“Which is absurd…” except even in The Blaze’s original article on this topic, they included a study EXACTLY ON THIS TOPIC: “A 1996 study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology said approximately 32,000 pregnancies result from rape each year in the United States and that about 5 percent of rape victims are impregnated.”

32,000 annually based on actual figures is a far cry from your source’s 450-740 based on nothing but conjecture.

Or, as MODERATION said: pick a better source.

Good Lord. Studies have been done. The fact that you don’t know about them (or take an obviously biased, non-scientific website‘s word that there aren’t many out there as absolute truth) doesn‘t mean you’re right. As… you’re not.

I swear, Akin‘s comments have produced more idiocy than I’ve seen in quite a while. It‘s incredibly annoying when my own side needs to lie and backpedal instead of just admitting when they’re wrong.

If you want a better source, go find one. Do your own research if you are interested. All I said is what I heard a long time ago, (and Akin probably heard it too) it makes perfect sense. Again, if stress can cause a miscarriage (anybody doubting that by the way?), then why can’t it prevent a pregnancy? Why is it that many times couples are so stressed out trying to “make a baby” that they can’t conceive, but the minute they go adopt a baby, the stress goes away and the couple gets pregnant? I believe common sense before I believe ANY other source.

“All I said is what I heard a long time ago, (and Akin probably heard it too) it makes perfect sense.”

Sure, you probably heard it in 1995 when NC Rep Henry Aldridge said the same false thing. He said: ““The facts show that people who are raped – truly raped – the juices don’t flow, the body functions don’t work, and they don’t get pregnant.”" Oh, or maybe in 1988, when PA Rep Stephen Freind said the traumatic experience of rape causes a woman to “secrete a certain secretion” that tends to kill sperm. The odds that a woman who is raped will get pregnant are “one in millions and millions and millions,” he continued.

Sorry if you’re upset that you were caught repeating lies. But we can’t afford for people to say (or, God forbid, actually believe) this kind of falsity. Our future is too important to rely on such flimsy candidates with such blatantly wrong information.

“Notice that not ONE SINGLE PERSON HERE has responded to the common sense notion about stress and miscarriages, and stress and causing pregnancy.”

Probably because that wasn’t what Akin said and is a strawman argument. Just a hunch. And even worse (for your whining, anyway) is that even when stress has an effect, at least 5% of raped women still get pregnant. So now you’re in the awkward position of saying (like Akin) “they weren’t legitimately raped” or admitting that stress or some magical biological process does not shut down a woman’s reproductive ability even when violated (thus negating both yours and Akin’s arguments).

You pick your poison. I’m more interested in helping the GOP win some elections; and dumping Akin is the only way for this race to turn back to our side.

Just thought I’d do a little work for you. There are plenty of articles that say the stress CAN prevent pregnancy. Women with high levels of the hormone alpha amylase (associated with stress) have a harder time getting pregnant.

      http://health.usnews.com/health-news/family-health/womens-health/articles/2010/08/27/cant-get-pregnant-how-stress-may-be-causing-your-infertility

The question is: Is alpha-amylase released during a rape? I contend it is:

      https://kb.osu.edu/dspace/bitstream/handle/1811/37134/Jennifer_Hellman_Undergraduate_Honors_Thesis.pdf?sequence=1

According to this study, during the “Fight or Flight” response (which would occur during a rape), alpha-amylase IS released. Hmmm. MAYBE, this would be a legitimate way to determine if a LEGITIMATE rape occurred, if there is a way to analyze if alpha-amylase was released during a “rape”? I don’t see how this could be done given the context of the situation, but I better not say such a controversial thing!

… yes, you’re right. That’s pretty controversial. Because a passed out girl would not have this. A drugged girl would not. A girl knocked unconscious would not. A girl assaulted in her sleep would not. A consenting minor (who cannot legally consent, thus causing statutory rape) would not.

And yet out of all of those examples, the only “legitimate rape” that Akin would agree was rape would be if a girl who knocked unconscious. And yet even she wouldn’t be legitimate if we applied your standard.
