Toddler Dies After Having Rare Skin Disease That Led to Blisters When He Moved

Louisiana Toddler With Rare Skin Condition Dies in Mothers Arms

Tripp Roth, a 2-year-old with an extremely rare skin condition that resulted in blisters from any friction, died over the weekend in Ponchatoula, La.

According to his mother Courtney’s blog, Tripp’s condition was junctional epidermolysis bullosa (EB) and it required “very soft blankets and soft clothing and cloth diapers.” She wrote that at the time of his birth, the hospital bracelet and regular diapers caused huge blisters. Courtney soon found out that Tripp had problems eating and up until his death, he was fed through a G-tube.

EB itself is found in one in 50,000 live births, according to the Daily Mail. The type of with which EB Tripp was diagnosed affects 1 percent of those suffering from the disorder, and patients are not expected to live past 2 years old.

Tripp died on Saturday in his mother’s arms and his funeral will be held Jan. 18 in Louisiana. Here’s what Courtney wrote about her son on her blog in a post entitled “Heaven’s Little Drummer Boy”:

My precious angel received his wings today.
I have had many nightmares about having to write this post.
He was exactly 2 years and 8 months old.
It happened within minutes of me picking him up out of bed and rocking him.
He took his last peaceful breaths in my arms, in his most favorite spot.
My heart literally hurts more than I ever thought was possible.
I‘m completely lost without him and don’t know where to go or what to do when my feet hit the floor.
I miss him so much it physically hurts.
Please don’t forget to thank God for the PEACE we prayed to him for.
And please bear with me as I try to pull myself together.
I will let everyone know as soon as I decide on the details of his services.
Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for the support through this unbearable time.
I know he’s flying high, pain free, and talking Jesus’ ear off…
But that doesn’t take away this selfish feeling of wanting him back in my arms.
I love you, Bubby.
Mommy misses you more than I promised I would…
I hope Jesus loves your drumming as much as we all did.

According to the Daily Mail, EB is a condition where the protein that holds the inner layer of skin (the dermis) and the outer layer of skin (epidermis) together is absent. This means that any friction on the skin causes the two layers to rub and blister.

Beautifull baby boy, back where he came from. His Mom knows how he suffered, and her heart is broken both ways, one with his pain, and now hers in her heart. I understand completely, sympathise and wish her peace. He really is a little angel. God bless this family.

Cannot imagine the pain that little one endured and how aweful as a parent to know that touching and comforting will cuase more blisters and more pain. Thoughts and prayers to the family. A little angel on his way to his Lord.

Bless this child Lord for he is in your hands now. This is heart breaking that he had to endure such a disease, but to him he had no inkling of his condition; and died happy. Bless his mother and father for their loss.

I could not watch the video’s all the way through without crying. I had to stop, besides in an hour I have to go teach a class and it might scare my students if I walked in teary eyed.
