A hospital official has told the Associated Press that the Indiana toddler found in a field after Friday’s violent tornadoes has died.
“Fourteen-month-old Angel Babcock of New Pekin, Indiana, was found after her family’s mobile home was destroyed in the storms that ravaged the Midwest and South. She had been in critical condition at Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville, Ky. Chief nursing officer Cis Gruebbel says she suffered head and neck injuries and her family decided to take her off life support.”
Babcock’s 21-year-old father Joseph Babcock, 20-year-old mother Moriah Brough, 2-year-old brother and 2-month-old sister all perished in the tornado. Her grandfather, Jack Brough, told AP that the family is thankful for the thoughts and prayers they have received and is looking to God.
NBC reports that the grandparents and doctors had decided to remove Angel Babcock from life support due to the severity of her injuries. At least 20 people were with her at the time she died, including two sets of grandparents, CNN reported.
Babcock’s death brings the overall death toll from the storms to 39 across five states.
The blond hair and blue-eyed toddler had been found by authorities in a field, at first not knowing who she was or how she ended up there. According to the Louisville, Ky. Courier-Journal, neighbors said the family was seen hunkering down in their mobile home, lying face down in a hallway with their hands clasped in prayer as the tornado approached. A family friend told WXYZ they were violently thrown from the home and their bodies scattered.
She was initially taken to a hospital in Salem before being flown to Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville, Ky. with no name and no family. Babcock’s extended family eventually located the toddler and were with her at the time of her death.
Reflecting on the family killed in New Pekin, neighbor Andy Lanham told CNN that he was at a loss for words.
“They (were) good people,” he said. “Nobody deserves it. I hate it.”

Posted on March 5, 2012 at 9:48amPrayer works! It obviously worked for this little girl and it can work the same way for you!
Jesus just loves the little children, doesn’t he. I wonder if the people here were an affront to god in some way.

Posted on March 5, 2012 at 10:17amHow did the prayer work exactly? When they found the child alive? Oh, wait, she died a few days later…is it because she is reunited with her family? I don’t understand your statement.

Posted on March 5, 2012 at 1:54pm@Foxholeatheist – I totally understand your anger. Although you probably don’t want to hear it – God also understands your anger. It’s HARD to understand why God “allows” horrible things to happen to good people and the most innocent among us. There are times when I (a Christian) look up at God and said, “Really, Lord?! REALLY?” – but at the end of the day, I know that God is good and even when life is unfair – He’s still good. God never promised us life would be fair or easy anyhow – just that He would walk with us. Walking with him doesn’t even ensure us “no suffering” in life but he does give us strength, endurance and peace. A child’s lost life is tragic and heartbreaking BUT none of us are guaranteed or promised tomorrow. That’s why we should (although we usually don’t – including me) life life to the fullest.

Posted on March 5, 2012 at 10:09pmI suppose it‘s also God’s fault they chose to live in tornado alley? Human beings live on faults lines, coastal areas, flood zones and tornado alleys where destructive weather patterns make them vulnerable. You can’t blame God for that.
The child is in heaven and that is far better for her than living down here in this wicked and evil world with the likes of you.

Posted on March 7, 2012 at 10:26amLet’s see, the grandmother lost her entire family because of that storm. Do you think she might have been praying during the thick of it? Do you think she might have been praying to thank her god when they found the baby? I am sure she was praying after they took her into care to save her life. It was as if her god played a cruel joke on her. When they found the baby “Oh, it was a miracle”! When the baby died suddenly it was “god’s will”.
Report Post »Yes, you’re right. It was their fault they live in a tornado infested area. They should know better. How many people pray every day for the life of their babies that don’t live near tornadoes? How many sick children are being prayed over while they suffer horrible and painful lingering agonizing deaths that go on for months or even years? “Oh Jesus, thank you for letting my team win the Superbowl. Thank you for helping me find my car keys”. What about the starving children in Africa or the children who are beaten and kept in cages or in basements or as sex slaves? Why do prayers seem to work for some but not for others? I understand people die, but for your god to allow them to die like this leaves me scratching my head as to why you choose to worship something so heartless and obviously evil as this. We are all in agreement that allowing children to suffer in these ways is evil. If your god has the power to stop it but doesn’t, that makes it just as evil as those he allows to carry out the deeds.

Posted on March 7, 2012 at 10:40amJulie, so god is walking with the skeleton children in Africa? Or maybe their suffering is to teach someone else a lesson? The great thing about religion is that you can twist it around to make sense of any situation in your life regardless of how true or untrue it really is.
Prayer doesn’t work. The law of averages dictate that both good and bad things happen to all of us. Some just remember more of one or the other. Most of the world’s population live in fantasy land and think they are going to get something better after they die. I knew people who lived their whole life never trying to do better or improve their situation because they thought they were going to get some sort of reward after death. Religious beliefs seem to be stronger in the southern states; following it is like taking nonprescription medication and boy oh boy but the southern folk sure do love their pills.

Posted on March 5, 2012 at 9:32amSo, so sad. I would hope some enterprising people will come up with a low cost cable tie down for manufactured housing units. This could be a benefit for the whole country where such storms are a possibility.

Posted on March 5, 2012 at 9:47amHow about if we raise the people who live in these homes up and out of poverty rather than “tie their homes down”?
Report Post »JediKnight
Posted on March 5, 2012 at 3:50pm@FoxHole: You assume they live in poverty. Some people choose to live in a home like that and it has nothing to do with poverty.

Posted on March 5, 2012 at 12:37amIt’s stories like this that drive me to work harder and to try harder. Husband and father of two boys, and I have worked and gone to school for four years now but when I’m not working and not studying for school I am studying outside of school.
Even now, being born in this country is winning the lottery, it would be a shame to waste the opportunity to better myself, to educate myself, when much of the rest of the world exists in such darkness and ignorance.
How can anyone waste most of their time doing nothing when through education, not schools necessarily, but through education you can better yourself and help others when it’s possible.
This story drives me to do better.

God Bless the family for still looking to him even in the bad times. Our God isnt just for the good going times.. Dont be one who gets aggravated when something like this happens even tho your a believer. We are still on the earth that is crying out for the day of redemption. Believe me, the family who made it to heaven, totally understands and is not bitter. They wont have to worry anymore!

I cried when I saw that photo of this little girl. I would now be willing to give my life if it could bring her back. I am now going to use my status to help others. I can only hope it makes an impact.

On a lighter note
Report Post »I had to drive past part of the damaged area today. I saw 2 houses that had been destroyed. One a fairly new brick and the other a hundred year old farm house.
The amazing thing is that less than 200 yards away was a trailer court with at least a dozen single wide units! And not a single one damaged!!!
Since when does a tornado choose a real house over a trailer park?
