Following Media Criticism, TOMS Shoes Founder Apologizes for Speaking at Focus on the Family Event

Following media criticism, TOMS Shoes founder Blake Mycoskie has released a statement apologizing for speaking at an event with Focus on the Family (FOTF) about “faith in action.“ He used the release to make sure people know that his appearance was a mistake and that he and his company support ”equal human and civil rights for all.” And, he drove home the fact that FOTF will not be affiliated with his “One for One” movement giving shoes to children in developing countries:
“Had I known the full extent of Focus on the Family’s beliefs, I would not have accepted the invitation to speak at their event. It was an oversight on my part and the company’s part and one we regret. In the last 18 months we have presented at over 70 different engagements and we do our best to make sure we choose our engagements wisely, on this one we chose poorly.
Furthermore, contrary to what has been reported, Focus on the Family is not a TOMS giving partner.
So there is no misunderstanding created by this mistake, let me clearly state that both TOMS, and I as the founder, are passionate believers in equal human and civil rights for all. That belief is a core value of the company and of which we are most proud.”
“What has been reported” refers to a recent article in Christianity Today that suggested FOTF is “working to become a TOMS international distributor in Africa.” Following the event announcement and Christianity Today’s article, Ms. Magazine organized a petition through Change.org asking TOMS to cut ties with “the notorious extreme right-wing, anti-gay, anti-choice, anti-woman fundamentalist Christian group Focus on the Family.”
FOTF describes its core beliefs as follows: All people are of infinite value, marriage is the foundation of family life, children are a gift from God, sex is an expression of love, and Christians have the responsibility to promote truth and social policy that improves the strength and health of the family.
Following Mycoskie’s statement, media outlets have spun and twisted “Furthermore, contrary to what has been reported, Focus on the Family is not a TOMS giving partner,“ to mean ”Focus on the family misrepresented [its] relationship with TOMS Shoes.”
In reality TOMS Shoes was referenced in three sentences of a larger 3500-word feature about FOTF’s attempt to “thrive—and survive—past its founder.” FOTF is never quoted claiming to be a “TOMS giving partner,“ only ”making slow strides” to to become a TOMS international distributor in Africa.
Do you think this is a sign of things to come? Will companies be increasingly black-balled by the media for participating in any sort of apolitical charity work with groups supporting traditional marriage and pro-life views?

Jesus H. Christ. Being Christian now automatically means that one is “notorious extreme right-wing, anti-gay, anti-choice, anti-woman”?

Posted on July 10, 2011 at 3:42pmI had always been fascinated by Tom’s shoes. I loved the idea they have of donating a pair of shoes for every pair purchased. However, with their founders knee jerk bigotry towards Christianity, I will withdraw my fascination, and any interest I have ever had of purchasing or suggesting their company to anyone. There are better ways to give to the poor, and being a bigot is not one of them.

My email to them: I see where you apologized for associating with Focus on the Family. As a FOTF supporter, I will no longer be shopping with you and will make sure all I know do not shop with TOMS, You obviously find offensive the FOTF beliefs, “All people are of infinite value, marriage is the foundation of family life, children are a gift from God, sex is an expression of love, and Christians have the responsibility to promote truth and social policy that improves the strength and health of the family.”
As a Christian, I cant see why yall are so afraid of values. But you made your choice, and now I make mine. Thanks.

Posted on July 10, 2011 at 12:18amAnd, another one caves into the Soros’ agenda. What on earth is wrong with this statement: “All people are of infinite value, marriage is the foundation of family life, children are a gift from God, sex is an expression of love, and Christians have the responsibility to promote truth and social policy that improves the strength and health of the family.” Absolutely, nothing! The fact that TOMS felt they had to distance themselves from this, speaks volumes about the TOMS founder and what that he either believes in the “agenda” or is caving under pressure. Whichever one it is, TOMS is forever tarnished . . .

Posted on July 14, 2011 at 2:10amThis is upsetting and erroneous…however, God can use all resources for good. Satan, however, is laughing at the division between two generous, caring organizations. I’m sorry TOMS caved to pressure and (in their hearts) they probably are also. But don’t let this error stop giving to a good program if that is your desire. Pray about it. Ask God to take this mess and bless it.

Posted on July 14, 2011 at 2:16amParties don‘t have to agree in order to do God’s work. Jesus did not say, “feed my sheep if you agree to all the criteria, laws, rules and religion”…. He won with love. Not everyone loved Him back. Giving is good, no matter who you are. The little children who receive these shoes are not to blame for this “error” or decision. Please pray about this and ask God to reveal the most loving, Christian way to handle it. Then, go forth without apology.

Posted on July 14, 2011 at 2:21amHow did this become a referendum on homosexuality or abortion? When disasters strike, do you take the political or religious temperature of the volunteer working beside you? NO. You do what needs to be done and at the end of the day, perhaps a conversation gives you the opportunity to share the love of Christ. A “company” does not have beliefs, individual people do regardless of the position of those in command. I’m sure the workers on the front line of these organizations are shaking their heads in disbelief as they try to minister to the needs of these barefoot babies.

Posted on July 10, 2011 at 12:10amFF is extreme when they take their religious beliefs into the realm of law, trying to force all to conform to their religious convictions. The Church can determine what marriage is within the religious context but when government gets involved, it becomes a secular thing that can not be limited by one set of religious doctrine. They probably do great work and promote fear as well.
Report Post »Emrys
Posted on July 10, 2011 at 12:34amThen atheists and deists are extreme when they take their beliefs into the realm of the law, as in trying to deny student-lead prayer at high school football games or the mentioning of God in a commencement speech (see recent headlines).
It is only in modern times (the past 250 years or so) that marriage fell into the state’s hands anyway. Before that, all one needed was a couple of witnesses and an exchange in vows, and the church kept records in each parish of the marriages, births, deaths, baptisms, etc. The government took that away from the church, and now all kinds of legal pitfalls are involved, such as who can legally inherit what, who can see whom in an ICU, who can or cannot testify against whom in court….
The government has one overriding reason to want to control marriage: to promote economic growth through the production of offspring. Any other stated reason for gov’t to be involved is a moral purpose, and therefor something liberals should not want. Ha. This is why government has a secular reason for wanting marriage to be betwen heterosexual couples: to increase the number of producers in society so as to increase economic wealth, and therefore its tax base. All other reasons are moral, and, as liberals always tell us, you cannot regulate morality. Making marriage between homosexuals legal is a moral issue, and the government should not legislate that, or liberals is the hypocrites we know them to be.

Posted on July 10, 2011 at 1:21amEmrys, the government has only been involved in licensing marriages for 100 years. It was started due to inter-racial marriages. The church was all up in arms about black men marrying white women and waving thier bibles around quoting about the immorality of it. Woman had to prove that they were of sound mind and entering into the marriage of thier own free will. Now, inter racial-marriage is common. The church seemed to forget about the immorality of such marriages. God never required anyone to get a license to be married, but the government does. You can get married at a justice of the peace and never deal with a church or a preacher and still be legally married. I believe every one should be allowed thier own personal beliefs and yet not be allowed to force those beliefs onto others. FOTF wants everyone to live under thier code of morality and what gives them that right to dictate thier beliefs onto others? Sounds like forcing sharia onto people if you ask me only its thier version of Christianity instead of islam. You dont have to believe in God in this country to get married. Gay people should be allowed to enter into civil unions with the weight of marriage without the consent of anyone except the 2 sharing vows. If you practiced your own personal beliefs without the gall of demanding that others practice your religion I would quit thinking of them as the American taliban. Live your own lives, leave others alone. Love that 1st amendment!

Posted on July 10, 2011 at 1:44amForget the facts that marriage has always in all societies been between a man and a woman. Marriage was established to provide for a safe family environment. True the government only began licensing about a 100 years ago. But at that time, prior to that time and until rather recently marriage has always been defined between a man and a woman. Even the Greek and Roman Empires knew that much.
