Too Cruel for School: Yearbook Article Pulled for Mocking Cheer Team’s Short Skirts

“Who wears short shorts?” was the headline of a controversial article in the just-published River City High School (Sacramento, CA) year book. The piece was mocking the schools cheer team and what they wear, or don’t wear. And now, despite defending the student editorial team’s right to publish the piece, the school has encouraged the student editor to pull the article.
According to News 10 in Sacramento, the article blasted the team for showing “more leg than Daisy Duke” and being “dolled up in micromini [sic] uniforms“ while ”strolling down halls“ with ”blatant disregard” for River City High’s “school dress code.”
That caused outrage among the cheer team and the members’ parents, who said the uniforms not only are chosen for them, but do conform to the school’s dress code.
400 students received year books with the article in it, but the rest of the 600 books have been put on hold until a replacement article can be inserted. That decision came after the school admitted it couldn’t censor the article:
River City staff gave parents copies of the education code showing that state law allows for the language. Some school officials said because of a court case – referred to as “Hazelwood” – officials were forced to leave the final editorial decisions to the students.
Hazelwood is a late ’80s Supreme Court ruling that gives principals the power to review and censor high school newspapers. The Court ruled that “educators do not offend the First Amendment by exercising editorial control over the style and content of student speech in school-sponsored expressive activities so long as their actions are reasonably related to legitimate pedagogical concerns.”
A River City Vice Principal said the article didn’t create libel, so all they could do was strongly encourage the editor to “make the right decision.”
The student editor — who was rejected by the team two years ago after trying out for the squad — responded to the controversy by apologizing, and agreeing to publish the replacement piece:
“I deeply regret submitting this page to my adviser, as well as letting it be published. I made an editorial mistake and I apologize for any pain that I may have caused. I did not mean for this spread to be malicious or maleconent in any way. This page was not an attack on the cheerleaders; it was not out of spite. While I did try out for the team in 2009, I carry no resentment towards the cheerleaders or their families. We [the yearbook staff] are currently taking steps to make amends. Again, I apologize for any hurt that I may have caused.”
You can watch News 10 reporter Natalie Sentz cover the story below. But as you might notice, Sentz really got into the story by donning the short-skirt uniform herself on TV. No lie:

Posted on May 31, 2011 at 3:37pmSo someone was offended by the extremely short skirts and found it offensive, but that’s offensive that she was offended. See, they should be able to do whatever they want, without concern for decency, and anyone who questions that is “hurting” the feelings of those who wish to be exhibitionists! I taught school for 5 years in public schools and the uniforms the girls wore were extremely “sexy”–and their dances almost pornographic. I don’t see how it can be construed as appropriate for them to be wearing those ultra-short skirts and kick up their legs showing off their panties. I have to agree with the person who wrote the article.

Posted on May 31, 2011 at 2:59pm@Secret Squirrel: Bumping and grinding are another story. This one was about uniforms. Maybe your “secret” is a guilty conscience for letting these kids arouse you? See “Dancermommd” comment. These girls are athletes too, even though people who haven‘t done it sometimes don’t realize that, and they need to wear clothing that doesn’t restrict their movement. So let’s not confuse the two topics. The uniform they wear and the routines they perform are seperate issues. On the topic of the routines, I’d agree that some of those do push the envelope.

Posted on May 31, 2011 at 2:28pmI have been out of high school for over 30 years and the cheerleading uniforms have always looked like that. Do you expect these girls to perform gymnastics in a skirt down to their ankles? They have matching pants underneath the skirt so it is, in fact, not underwear. Try having someone throw you up in the air and performing stunts in a long skirt. It is certainly more than a leotard that girls wear for gymnastics and cheerleaders are part dancers, part gymnists. Good grief people, get a life. If you can remember back to your high school days your cheerleaders probably wore the same outfits. Check your yearbook.

Posted on June 1, 2011 at 12:15amPlus they used to wear pleated skirts that easily fell back down after doing a stunt. Now these a-line straight skirts ride up and have to be pulled back down, and they just happened to snap a picture that showed them in that ridden up position. I certainly think they’re getting shorter and shorter, though.

Posted on May 31, 2011 at 1:32pmLet’s see…..if she tried out for the squad, she must’ve known about the outfits they wore and what she would be expected to wear. If she disapproved of them as she described, my guess is she was hurt and jealous when not chosen & this was a way to immaturely “get back” at them. But just a guess. It didn’t seem appropriate to vent her feelings in this way and time though, even though she has a right to voice her opinion. There are many times we have a “right” but it isn’t wise to do.
Report Post »Having said all that — I have always been against girls wearing skimpy outfits for cheerleading, etc. My husband agrees and said to him it’s like they are being very “suggestive”, “provocative” & “tempting to lust” to guys when they wear these skiimpy outfits and doing those “gymnastics” they do. But the truth is most people, even Christians, don’t care about that. They care more about feeling proud to have a daughter as a cheerleader. Many women “live” through their daughters — those that always wanted & envied cheerleaders/popular girls when they were young and this is a way to “get” it. Same with men and their sons in sports in that respect. If you want to sincerely live as the Scriptures say as a Christian, you’ll be interested in dressing modestly. All I see is the opposite (in church) – everywhere….seemingly unaware or caring.

Posted on May 31, 2011 at 1:31pmHmm, I dunno…. those look pretty dam short even for cheerleading skirts — I assume they have the regular cheer pants on underneath and not just underwear…
On the other hand, even bathing suits 50 years ago were showing more skin. I think the specific question, before the leftard trolls get their talking points together, isn’t whether or not girls should be showing so much skin AT ALL, but only whether it is appropriate for an official school uniform.
IOW, bathing suits are fine … at the beach.

Posted on May 31, 2011 at 2:46pmAt my kid’s high school, the issue was brought up by the students that the cheerleader’s uniforms did not conform to the dress code. The girls were allowed to wear their uniform to class on any day the football team was scheduled to play.
Dress code is that girls could not wear skirt lengths above where their finger tips lay on their thighs when their arms are down at their sides. Cheerleading uniform skirts are quite a bit above that.
The teachers, when they found out which students were complaining, confronted them. The students were intimidated and, one by one, dropped the complaint. Yes, it is a public school filled with liberal progressive teachers.

Posted on June 1, 2011 at 7:43am@TUMBLEBUMBLE….Agreed. The “grown-ups” ARE the problem. Certain rules for some, other rules for others. My 6′ tall daughter, size 6- recently had a discussion with an administrator in a public manner regarding the very dress code you mentioned. Her complaint….as she illustrated by pulling a short, chubby, girl from the audience- her fingertips don’t reach her crotch!!!!!!!!!! She could, according to the dress code, attend high school without pants and be within the “rules”. The dress code needs to be regulated from the knee up!

Does the swim team wear their uniform speedo all day in class and throughout the school? Or just right before competition and then dressing up after finishing the competition…..Big difference…
Cheer leaders are taught and encouraged to wear these short skirts and to have a sex appeal to draw attention. Can they not perform with skirts touching their knees, at least?
It is very sad these young women parade around looking like hookers and to think older women encourage it is disgusting. Older women, parents, are teaching these young ladies all they have to offer is sex appeal and to dress them as such could be viewed by some as child pornography. It is sickening, appalling and perverted. Why do men these days not respect women, because women teach there young ladies not to respect themselves….
Put some clothes on little hookers, you look stupid and your parents should be whipped for doing this to you and teaching you it’s ok…

Posted on May 31, 2011 at 9:33pmI do think cheerleaders’ skirts are getting too short. HOWEVER, let’s be objective here. I’m a band nerd, and I observed cheerleaders quite a bit at football games. Every time they did a jump, they were pulling down their skirts afterward because the jumping causes them to ride up. I notice in this picture that the skirts aren’t really THAT short up to their crotches, but the material is very wrinkled, which tells me they were just riding up, not cut that short.
Next point: If the skirts are too short, then something needs to be done about it in an administrative way. The yearbook is a place to show pride. If a band nerd who gets picked on edits the yearbook and takes jabs at the cheerleaders and jocks, then what‘s to stop the jock who’s editor one year of picking on all the nerdy kids? The yearbook is the wrong place to bring up these issues and make fun of these girls who are trying to foster school spirit. The yearbook is for all students, and every single student who takes that yearbook home flips to the page with his/her picture and organization page with pride. They shouldn’t be humiliated when they open it. The student adviser should never have allowed this, and I really don’t think this is a free speech issue. Would they allow cursing in the year book? Why not? It’s free speech, right? Wrong! This is the yearbook, not an op-ed piece.
I think y’all who are making an issue of whether or not cheerleaders are sluts are way off the point.

Can’t believe that there are so many of you filled with so much hate – I thought that ya‘ll were decent conservatives that don’t take part in the bile-spewing kind of thing we’d hear from most ultra-liberals.
A recap of some of the most dissapointing comments left about young ladies who are doing nothing more than trying to bolster school spirit: barely clad, showing their “gash”, entire waste of time, all schools will soon have pole dancing, slutleaders, sluts-in-training, exploiting female juveniles, cheer as a deviant part of American culture, Pole/Lap dance teams in every school.
WHAT? You should all be ashamed of yourselves.
2ND, I’m writing to you as someone with intimate knowledge of the cheer world. I’ve been a collegiate cheer head coach for the past 8 years – I cheered in college before that – and highschool before that.
To say that these girls are barely clad is insane – there is actually a bunch of functionality and safety aspects built in to the outfits that cheerleaders wear.

Uniforms for cheer have gotten smaller and tighter over the years, but not as drastically as most people think. Sure most squads (especially in Sunny California) are no longer wearing sweaters when they cheer.. but its hard to say that a long sleeved uniform is “barely clad” – these uniforms didn’t even show the girls mid-riffs.
Uniforms like the ones that this squad has are designed to be eye-catching with stripes on the sleeve so that the crowd can see their motions – these motions are traditionally designed to help the crowd (who is supposed to be chanting along) to stay in time. Functionality.
Form-fitting uniforms are designed with safety in mind. For squads that perform stunts and basket tosses the last thing you want in between the “flyer” and the “bases” is a whole bunch of loose, baggy material. You want to be able to catch as much human as possible. Safety.
As for cheer being a complete waste of time…that rational can apply to almost any extra-curricular activity, can’t it? Most cheer squads work hard to be upstanding members of the school. They are and should be a point of pride often practicing harder and longer than a lot of other teams at their schools, on top of devoting a lot of time to community events.
Don’t be fooled by the pom-poms either – cheer is serious business. The best of high school cheerleaders can find college scholarships.
Finally – for all you patriots, you can’t get much more Americ
