Too Far? Morbid ‘Astronaut Suicides’ Photos Show Rocketeers’ Last Moments

NASA’s space shuttle program is no more. This, of course, is a fact that has led to sadness among many individuals and parties who believe in the importance of U.S.-led missions into the extraterrestrial unknown. But, a new comedic, yet morbid, photography project seeks to make light of what many deem to be “the end of an era.” Pete Brook of Wired.com writes:
Piggy-backing on the mixed emotions of the country about the end of NASA’s space shuttle program, photographer Neil DaCosta and art director Sara Phillips produced a darkly comic project by staging fictitious last moments of a distraught anonymous, unemployed astronaut.

These images, though, aren’t just “last moments.” They capture suicides as a result of these rocketeers joining the ranks of America’s unemployed (that’s the “morbid” part). Brook continues:
Be it funny or of questionable taste, Astronaut Suicides not only reflects on the end of a childhood icon, but also taps into the anxiety many Americans are feeling over jobs, pensions and livelihoods since the economic downturn took hold three years ago.

DaCosta and Phillips hope that the images encourage people to pay attention to what’s going on in America. While some will surely find the photos enjoyable, others may be offended by use of suicide to make comedic and sociopolitical statements.
Here’s one last image for you to “enjoy” (view the entire photo spread here and take our poll below):

Do you use the number 0?
Yep, guess Arab people practicing Islam never did anything for society. That’s why we are still writing the number six as VI….bigots.

Did you know the numbers 11 and 12 are hold overs from our Gaelic ancestry? They only appear at the beginning of our number string, and it’s because Gaelic used a base-12 numbering system (make sense since they were into the months, hours of the day, etc).
It’s for this reason that converting numbers when running motion physics equations is simpler in Imperial (Standar) measurements than in Metric. All the base units are evenly divided by 12.

Muslims didn’t invent Arabic numerals. They were originally developed by Indian mathematicians before Islam was even spawned, and they were called HINDU Numerals. The only reason they’re called Arabic numerals is because they were introduced to Europe by Arabs.

Posted on August 22, 2011 at 11:03ameh… dark humor I suppose, has its place…. just gets me depressed that with the Shuttles done and a huge gap before Ares or Jupiter projects get off the ground and we have the new crew capsule system….
I still fail to understand why NASA didn’t work on a mini-shuttle for crew only missions, I know the AIR FORCE now has the X37B and they’ve flown 2 top secret missions, but we needed someone in between that the and the shuttle for a 3-4 manned crew and a version that was for cargo runs only, NASA could’ve run a parallel project to the shuttle during its whole time in active use and had a smaller replacement readied over a decade ago.
Report Post »sWampy
Posted on August 22, 2011 at 11:37amThe shuttle was designed to waste as much money as possible, it should have been much more like a space plane and less like a brick, but saving money has never been a goal of any federal program.

Posted on August 22, 2011 at 10:58amI take the dark comedy for what it is. Personally, I would never make fun of the many intelligent and dedicated NASA people who have seen their careers go up in smoke.
This makes me very sad to see that our manned space program has ended, only to be replaced with additional Muslim sensitivity efforts.

Posted on August 22, 2011 at 10:49amAs our space program goes down the tubes, so does our economy, our jobs, credit rating and status. At least it’s refreshing to know that many “baby mommies and daddies” don’t have to worry about work, housing, or food. Now that the tax payers are fewer than those that don”t pay anything, I‘m glad to know O’Bama can continuously vacation. After all, problem solved.Putin, unfortunately has a point. The U.S. has become a parasite. I hope the “frontline” works this upcoming election. GOD help us all. Hey Bama, pass the lobster!

Being a college educated young (20′s) conservative (rare), this is Exactly what speaks to me and people my age. You can lament the nation’s loss of moral standards, but the symbolism is PERFECT for young voters. Things like this can galvanize the young people against obama and his gutting of manned space exploration.

Posted on August 22, 2011 at 10:25amIt is somewhat morbid conceptually, but it is an atrocity to eliminate one of America’s iconic (and actually useful) organizations solely for the purpose of redirecting revenue into welfare programs and then claim that NASA will now serve to create better relations with arib terrorist’s.
