Too Far? New Anti-Gun Ad Features Man Shooting Silhouette of a Child

If Sarah Palin was demonized for placing a “target” over Rep. Gabbie Giffords’s Arizona District, do you think there will be any fallout from a new anti-gun ad that features a man shooting a paper target featuring the silhouette of a young girl?

The new ad is the brainchild of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. It’s supposed to raise concerns about extended gun magazines like the kind used by Tucson shooter Jared Loughner. But instead its raising questions of reticence.

In it, a man can be seen loading his hand gun with a 32-shot magazine. After cocking the gun, he begins firing rapidly. The camera then cuts away to his target: a silhouette of a young girl with pig tails:

“We think this ad is extremely tasteless,” National Rifle Association spokeswoman Rachel Parsons told The Blaze. “This does nothing to address the real issue. We need to do more to make sure disqualified parties don’t get their hands on these things. That’s not what this ad is doing. It’s engaging in sensationalizing.”

Rather than being constructive, she said, the ad instead demonizes law-abiding citizens: “They’re trying to make it seem that anyone who would own a magazine with more than 10 rounds is obviously out to commit mass murder.”

But banning a magazine with more than 10 rounds is exactly what the bill the ad supports — the Lautenberg-McCarthy legislation which would ban “high capacity” ones– would do. That, Parsons said, is odd considering 10 rounds is far from “high-capacity.” Instead, most hand guns are sold with standard magazines that hold 12 rounds.

“Lawful people are being disrespected,” she said

We reached out to the Brady Campaign for comment but did not hear back.

Besides the young girl’s image, the ad also features the images of an elderly man, a woman, a postman, and a graduate:

This isn’t the first ad to use doomed children to trumpet a message. Back in October, the climate-change group 10:10 released a video of children who deny global warming exploding in front of their classmates:

    Where’s the liberals all in a tizzy about the demonization they are spouting? Like the article said they went after Palin….whats the difference? Yeah, the difference is that they are using this for THEIR agenda. Another case of whats good for the goose is not good for the gander. It makes me ill the way they twist and turn things. And as for the second video, I saw it several times on TV and was absolutely APPAULED at it….it was soooo bad that it should have NEVER been shown. I would never give a dime to ANYONE who’s tactics are so tasteless, unchristian, morally repugnant and extremely disgusting.     What are we complaining about? We allow them to set the message, the tone, the wording, and then get worked up over their latest encroachment. Stop! For just a moment think about how much of your life willingly or unwillingly they already control. We need to strike at the core. If you don’t like this, too bad. We allowed this monster, in little pieces, to involve itself in our lives. Now; we want it gone. What they are doing now has taken a long time to implement it. We cannot undo it in 2 years or 4. Sad to say but each of us is guilty of allowing it, little by little. From New Deal to Obamacare, we are all complacent. They had a goal, made it happen while we plugged along. We are now tilting at windmills unless we decide to STOP and FIGHT. 100 years since woodrow wilson, and now we wake up. Who is to blame?

      Thank you! It drives me nuts to hear folks say ‘ clips’ instead of ‘ magazine.’ Having said that, liberals and marxists who are using targets shaped like children and elderly people is flat out disgusting. I also noted that the shooter was not very accurate either. No consistent grouping. Must have been a liberal shooter who needs a high capacity magazine and doing the spray and pray method.

    Because if someone is going to go out and murder a bunch of people they are going to bring with them one clip right? All the ban would do is instead of making them carry one clip of thirty two, it would make them carry three clips of twelve and add about 6 seconds of reload time onto their murder spree. How about we go after the people instead of after the tools they used?

      If it takes you six seconds to load a magazine into a semi auto pistol, you ain’t doing something right. The average shooter at our shoots can reload a pistol in less than two seconds. So can the revolver shooters.

    Unwittingly, this ad actually makes the case that assualt clips save lives. Smith & Wesson 9mm, Smith & Wesson .40 caliber, and Kember .45, notwithstanding assault clips, save my children’s lives every night. However, my guns have a tendency to wander off and shoot people at random. You really have to keep them on a leash. Something should be done about this madness.

      I agree with sleezy. (vomit a little in my mouth) These mags are so under-engineered, refer to my above post. 13 round cap mags are the best, and only if you have an awesome pistol. H&K, Sig, Para-ordinance, Smith&Wesson. Ones that are top-dollar and are quality engineered to handle the high-cap. You buy a garbage gun, or after-market mag, then you are doomed to jam and your home defense will be eulogised at your family’s funeral.

      Very true, to them the guns are the problem, and yet like the 10:10 group they show violence being used upon people who happen to disagree with them, and the DELIBERATE usage of VIOLENT FORCE against those daring to disagree.

      The sight of an ad with someone targeting children or having a button to push with a smile as kids and adults who make a stand are exploded is horrendous and terrorism of the worst kind. This type of ad should never be shown.

      I think it is ok if they ban assault clips. Since, there is no such thing.
      Even if they had been able to come up with the right name, (magazine) what makes one an assault type over another? The magazine can’t assault anyone.
      And what if I would like to test my piece at the range after having it worked on to fix a failure to eject problem? I need to reload after 8 rounds?
      Besides, most states don’t allow magazines over 10 rounds even if you do hold a high capacity LTC. My state doesn’t. And my LTC is supposedly “unrestricted”. Right.
      They are running this ad for one reason only. To whip up the hysteria amongst their sycophants who think guns are evil.
      They are a tool. Ban them and see what happens. Are hammers next?

      I too belive in Gun Control. I am always in control of my guns and I hit what I aim at. I have been to a lot of ranges in my time, both private and public and I have NEVER seen anyone shoot at any of the silhouttes I see in this ad. I am appaled and angered that these walking abominations would even use one to make their misguided point. Why is they are the ones engaged in the behavior they constantly accuse us of??       And NONE of these campaigns do anything to address the real issue in the Jared Loughner case: why was a mentally ill person with a police record (or should have had one if the sherriff had done his job) able to buy the gun in the first place? We need to be talking about how we deal with our mentally ill citizens, not taking away or limiting a constitutional right of all citizens.
      Under existing laws, Loughner would not have been able to buy the gun if his record showed the times that campus and city police were called about him, or the drug charges. He should have been unable to buy the gun if the issues of his mental illness were recorded properly. Any citizen has to go through background checks to buy a handgun, why was his passed?

      Standard Advertising in the Post-Willie Hooten age. Many thanks to Lee Atwater, Don Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney and “fair game” Karl Rove.
      This is actually quite memorable and poignant, in light of the recent killing of an innocent 8-year old girl by an extended clip assailant who was beaten to the ground before he could replace the expended magazine. It’s possible he would have only gotten off nine or ten rounds with a standard magazine, and possibly have spared some lives.

      The government and radicals won’t be satisfied until they get a ban on all guns, because they want us all disarmed and helpless to prevent anything they want to do. I wonder how many Jews would have ended up in ovens in Nazi Germany, had they all been as well armed as the citizens of this country?

      Assault clips huh… funny I thought they were called magazines and the clips are what hold a number of rounds that go into a magazine. Guess we need the SMART ppl at Brady Campaign to explain it to us dolts. Odd thing is the only thing that kills is the person using the gun.

      The NRA needs to get better PR ppl to combat attacks like this, they need to show how guns have saved lives. They need to do stories about how ppl who had guns but b/c of restrictive laws couldnt get to them; like Susanne Hupp described during her Senate testimony after the Libby’s massacre. I get American Rifleman published by NRA and each copy has a section dedicated to how guns have saved lives. By the time you dial 911 and cops get to you its too late. I actually had someone who was drunk try to get in my home yanking on the door. I told them to leave they insisted it was so & so’s home and wanted in. At that pointy I got my gun released the slide so they could hear it and they still stood at the door defiant. I called 911, he heard me on the phone while I waited…. Best part of that wait the operator told me to put the gun away!!! “ are you doing it now is it in the drawer” Sarcastically I said “yeah uh huh” while I took the safety off waiting for cops to arrive. The guy staggered away a minute or 2 before cops showed up and then they eventually found him at a nother home that has had it share of problem guests(kid owns the place and is party central within a family community.. nice huh)…

      What the Brady Campaign and other anti gun groups fail to or choose not to share is criminals dont follow laws. You can make all the laws you want it wont stop a criminal it only punishes law abiding ppl. The laws on the books need to be enforced a crime committed with a gun should have more teeth added to it. They shouldnt be looking for ways to take away more from law abiding ppl. I dont care what size a MAGAZINE is I can fire it just as fast and reload as someone with a large or small capacity… again is the user not the weapon that is in control.

      And NONE of these campaigns do anything to address the real issue in the Jared Loughner case: why was a mentally ill person with a police record (or should have had one if the sherriff had done his job) able to buy the gun in the first place? We need to be talking about how we deal with our mentally ill citizens, not taking away or limiting a constitutional right of all citizens.
      Under existing laws, Loughner would not have been able to buy the gun if his record showed the times that campus and city police were called about him, or the drug charges. He should have been unable to buy the gun if the issues of his mental illness were recorded properly. Any citizen has to go through background checks to buy a handgun, why was his passed?

      That would mean getting rid of the gun show loop hole. As it stands, Mayor Bloomberg pointed out that gun show dealers have little respect for the law and skirt around, if not actually breaking the law they violate its intent.

      There are two kinds of extended clips for hand guns. You can purchase a “Kit” that adds the extra rounds to a Stock magazine supplied by the law. Or you can purchase a factory manufactured extended round clip. I would guess that Loughner had a Kit form of the magazine since the gun jammed with an extended magazine installed, I believe that evidence showed that the spring for pushing the rounds up was flawed so that if you make a logical guess would be that the magazine inserted was a “Kit” version.

      I for one am all for banning magazines with capacities over 13. NOT because i believe they are “mass murder” mags, but because after 13 rounds (+1) the mags become unreliable. A law abiding citizen thinking this kind of capacity will save them “better” had better learn that if you need more than 14 rounds, you better learn your weapon and learn to reload faster. Reloading a magazine is MUCH faster than having to clear a jammed round, and the illusion that since you have 30+ rounds at your disposal gives you more security will make you dead if you are too lazy to push a button that ejects an empty mag, reach for a new mag, insert the mag and push another button that will load it (all taking less than a second if you are good, maybe 1.5 seconds if not).
      Ban these super-high-cap mags, and teach better gun handling in a crisis.

      I’ll NEVER have more than a 13 round mag for my HK .40 USP. But i make my rounds count. +P+ COR-BON 1,300 FPS devistators (my name). If 52 rounds (4 mags) don’t get it done, then there must me a jihad on my house, and when I’m out, then you must contend with my Ka-Bars. And my dogs. AND my shotguns. AND…….

      You have got the right idea. Maybe there should be counter-ads that show the libs/progressives for what they really are….mean-spirited, belligerent, spoiled, and egotistical. Catch them in mob actions at their rallies. Tape them ranting at their town hall meetings. Place a photo of Glenn Beck or Sarah Palin in front of them, and then tape their over-the-top reactions. None of the above would be a pretty thing to watch, but at least America would see what a danger they are to the Republic.

      How many people were shot, again? 20, right (fired 31 rounds hit 20 people, from my understanding). A standard magazine for his gun holds 15 rounds, doesn’t it? THANK GOD he had the high capacity magazine. He only got 2 standard magazine’s worth of bullets off before he had to reload, then jammed the gun.

      Honestly, (I’m looking for real answers), why does anyone think 30 round clips should be legal?

      I’m in my sixties, I’ve had a gun “22 single shot rifle” sense I was 8 years old. I have never shot a person. There are many more out there like me, then the bent man that shot those people in AZ. Keep governments where it belongs.

      I have never had my 19 round magazine jam on my Springfield XDM9. I go to the range almost every weekend. This is also using a variety of ammo, various grains, various manufacturers and bullet types. I love my XDM. My next purchase will hopefully be a Springfield XD40 Subcompact I plan on using as my conceal carry.

      Or Perhaps a 30 Round magazine could incredibly useful in the real world as you are standing between the team of home invaders/ burglars and your wife and daughters. Because the little secret is here on Planet Earth where people aren’t always all sweetness and light those who intend to do harm rarely travel alone. I would feel more comfortable to have a 30 round loaded with 2 or 3 15 rd backups on the belt if it ever heaven forbid go to that situation.

      Additionally and this is not a comment on the content but the moronic ignorance. THERE ARE NO SUCH THINGS AS ASSAULT CLIPS. There are restricted, standard and extended pistol magazines. Clips are not loaded with ammunition and inserted into a handgun. Frankly not only does that video merely make an emotional appeal but it shows the ignorance of it’s creator. But that goes along with the messiah martyr complex of the left they have spent so much time declaring themselves victims the idea of actually defending themselves and their families is completely foreign to their world view.
