‘Too Pornographic’: Canada’s New Twenty Dollar Bill Under Fire For Unusual Reason

(Photo: Bank of Canada)

In a charged not often leveled against federal currencies, Canada’s new $20 bill is being deemed “too pornographic” by focus groups, while others are saying the prominently displayed buildings too closely resemble the Twin Towers, unless you look closely.

What is the bill really depicting?

The note is actually said to display the Vimy Memorial in France, which, in typical French style, has three topless women prominently displayed.

While they are meant to represent peace, justice, and hope, respectively, some think the statues just look inappropriate when viewed in two dimensions.

Yahoo explains:

It isn’t just Canadians who are pointing out these images. The story was picked up by the Daily Mail in England [which] wrote, “Canadians have been left confused over the country’s new $20 bill, which some have said appear to feature three naked women and the World Trade Center towers.”

[...]

In addition to people seeing a sex toy on the $100 bill, some have seen a skull and crossbones on the $50. The Bank of Canada will be unveiling new redesigned polymer $5 and $10 bills by the end of 2013.

Which leaves many asking– who in the world has been designing Canada’s currency?

The Vimy Memorial (Photo: CBC)

But to be fair– it probably doesn’t help that many of the interviewed had no idea what the Vimy memorial was, or why it was featured on their $20 bill.

While the note is meant to “(evoke) the contributions and sacrifices of Canadian men and women in military conflicts throughout our history,” it seems to be evoking controversy instead.

Do you think there‘s anything inappropriate about Canada’s new $20, or are some Canadians being a little over-sensitive?

The Vimy Ridge battle and subsequent victory (an impossible victory ) was and is widely thought to be when Canada as a nation made it’s mark on the world. A nation coming of age on the world stage so to speak. That battle was and still is a central aspect of memorial day along with the victories at Paschendale, Ypres and the national tradgedy that was July 1st 1916 (for the Newfoundland Regiment). My American bothers and sisters it would help if you availed yourselves of a little history outside of your own borders, broaden your horizons. I know both countries military histories quite well. We are except for the war of 1812 (a Can victory againsy all odds) brothers in arms for the better part of 200 years now…don’t denigrate a memorial of battle that took tens of thousands of lives (on both sides). Ask the Germans who they feard most in both WWs, it wasn’t the Americans in case you thought it was.

One would think that instead of this nonsense, folks would be more concerned about all of Europe going to hell in a handbasket, rather than so called porno twenty dollar bill that at least has value!

Puddle Duck – It wasn’t “Americans” complaining about the bill, it was a focus group as well as an English publication. Please take a moment to read the article before you immediately jump to nation bashing. As to who the Germans feared in WW2, it was the Russians. In WW1 it was the Marine Corps, so I don’t see your final point.

ebw1957….you absolutely make no sense…what the Heck are you talking about….Canada was Colonized by the British and French. The Battle of the Plains of Abraham proved to be a deciding moment in the conflict between France and Britain over the fate of New France (Quebec), within four years, most of France’s possessions in eastern North America would be ceded to Great Britain. The only raping was I guess between French and British Soldiers NOT! I just wish folks would brush up on some basic History before posting. Dumbing down of America is working.

UHM EXCUSE ME!?!?! WTF are you talking about??

I think about 50 million Indians (native americans if you prefer) were doing good filling up the land in North America until a bunch of Europeans showed up and thought they owned the place.

      @ reddenblack

i actually had no idea there were so many native americans. but unlike what ebw1957 said, most who died were not murdered and raped, they died from diseases brought over from europe. the majority of the murders started after america gained independence. cowboys and indians and all that, cowboys never seem to have a british accent in the movies do they? and lets be honest the oppression of the native americans is still going on now. and we got kicked out 250 years ago, give them a casino and tell them to shut up.

as sad as that is, that wasn’t his or my point. my point is that if you’re white, which the majority of north america is, your ancestors are not native americans. they are european. therefore your ancestors were not murdered by mine. they are my ancestors too. they are one and the same.

      @reddenblack..

looked it up, population of north america pre colonisation is estimated to be as low as 2.1 million, with the highest estimate of 18 million. so take the highest estimate for names sake. thats less than the population of modern day new york. so spread over the entire north american continent, id say that was quite sparsely populated.

    Boobs? I see three poppies.

Poppies have long been used as a symbol of sleep, peace, and death: sleep because of the opium extracted from them, and death because of the common blood-red color of the red poppy in particular. In Greek and Roman myths, poppies were used as offerings to the dead.

The Queen is the (powerless) “head of state”. Canada gained full independence a long time ago. The Monarchy is a figurehead that is retained by all “commowealth” countries (Australia, New Zealand, Bahamas, etc). The nations associated under the commonwealth use the british style “paliamen tray system” of Gov’t. IMO the USA modeal is superior but can also be abused if WE let it happen.
