Top 5 Aerial Weapons That Could Change the Future of Warfare

Here are the top five aerial weapons that one day could change the face of modern warfare. Relying on the most advanced technology in the world, these hyper-advanced projectiles may outmaneuver, outrun, and outmatch America’s foes around the globe, whenever the need arises.

1) The Mach-5 Cruise Missile

If a cruise-missile at supersonic speed is a full-throttle Ford Mustang, then a missile that hits Mach 5 is a Formula 1 racer going all out.

The problem is, that hypersonic Mach 5 pace — clocking in at five times the speed of sound– has yet to be reached by munitions. Until now.

The X-51 missile can hit hypersonic speed, and moves so fast that it doesn’t even need an explosive warhead. It’s kinetic energy will shred through targets.

Boeing has already tested the X-51, which last year flew at hypersonic speed for a few minutes after launching from a B-52 bomber. Though it fizzled early in the last test in June, there will be another trial in the months ahead.

2) “Super Decoy Drone”

The only defensive weapon that makes the list, this super decoy drone, called the Miniature Air Launched Decoy (MALD), is a distracting, annoying, weapons-jamming dynamo.

It‘s sort of like a flying JarJar Binks that soaks up all the enemies’ attention and firepower.

David Axe of Wired gives the specs and mission of the MALD as a:

“300-pound, jet-powered ‘bots cruise for up to 500 miles, more or less inviting enemy defenders to unload their guns and missiles at them. Meanwhile, Air Force and Navy planes carrying anti-radiation missiles sneak around to destroy the enemy air defenses as they’re busily killing the MALDs.”

The MALD’s mission is a space-a version of the adage “take one for the team.”

Aerial Weapons That Will Change Warfare In the Future

3) “Hyper Speed Bunker Buster”

Bad guys in Iran and North Korea are digging bunkers to hide their sensitive military sites like a horde of evil gophers.  This rocket-fueled bunker buster punches through the earth to obliterate anything underneath it.

The main draw here is the trade-off of size for speed. Instead of using huge, 2,000 lbs bombs that rely on weight and ordnance for the job, the hyper speed bunker busters use kinetic velocity. It’s all about sheer speed.

As Bill Murray says in Caddyshack, “Au revoir, gopher.”

Aerial Weapons That Will Change Warfare In the Future

4) “Triple-Target Terminator Missile”

It cannot be stopped. It does not feel pity. And it will chase down anything.

That pretty much describes the Triple-Target Terminator, in development by Darpa and missile-maker Raytheon.  Meant as a “high-speed, long-range missile that can engage air, cruise-missile, and air-defense targets,” this projectile is the like the all-purpose utility player on a baseball team.

This one is a little far off from seeing action. It’s not easy to make a one size fits all ground, sea, air missile, but it would be cost effective, and already has a scary name.

Aerial Weapons That Will Change Warfare In the Future

5) “Pocket-Sized” Precision Nukes

The JDAM– or Joint Direct Attack Munition– has been roaring down from the sky to obliterate America’s enemies for years with symphony-like precision.

Now, defense scientists are looking to make the nuclear bombs as close to JDAM accurate as they can.

The B61, which has been America’s main nuclear gravity bomb for decades, is getting a GPS upgrade. A more accurate nuke means explosive power can be scaled back for the same effect.

Just the thought of getting a mini-nuke through a window might make the axis of evil countries play a little nicer with the world community.

The future of warfare is “directed energy” weapons. Free-Electron Lasers (FEL), Mass Drivers (Rail Guns), and Ion Cannons already exist and are being perfected. Imagine targeting and eliminating an enemy target at the speed of LIGHT.

No what makes these current weapons so scary is that they can be automated and MASS PRODUCED. And, with new manufacturing techniques (3D printing), we could build enough of them to BURY our enemies in bombs.

Erm… Current arms manufacturing techniques are vastly more efficient than 3D printing. 3D printing is great for models and prototypes but cannot compete with the sheer volume of output any purpose-tooled mass production facility is capable.

@WeekendAtBernankys: 3D Printing is RAPIDLY advancing, and is currently being integrated into the aerospace industry. Boeing, GE, and others plan to start building FINISHED products (not prototypes) using the technology.

      Boeing: http://blog.netfabb.com/?bid=38
      GE: http://nextbigfuture.com/2011/05/ge-and-eads-to-3d-print-lighter-and.html

Also, the University of South Hampton recently demonstrated that a complete UAV can be constructed using 3D printing: http://technabob.com/blog/2011/08/03/first-3d-printed-plane/

Once 3D printing becomes widespread and economies of scale kick in, we can make weapons lighter, stronger, and cheaper than ever before…

Screw that crap we need to go back to wiping out entire cities like we did in WW11(the last war that we won) Hamburg, Nagasaki. if war is so sanitized that no gets hurt then there is no reason to not attack. The population must suffer for the stupidity of their leaders or they will never turn on them.

All I care about is the loyalties of the engineers working on these systems and their countries of origin…all you need to do is look at who is graduating from our engineering schools and ask yourself, who is hiring these guys. All of our major defense contractors have ex-pat Pakistani, Indian, and Chinese engineers, as well as other “questionable” nationals. We have been burned by foreign born scientists and engineers before. Not to mention former presidents giving missile technology to our good friends the Chinese. It’s bad enough that the Chinese got a sniff of the helo that went down during the OBL raid, I would hate for them to get tech on some this really cool stuff. You have the Indians and Russians collaborating on a F-22 style stealth fighter two countries we obviously can’t trust, yet we have engineers from both countries working in our defense industry. You can’t help but worry about their loyalties.

@RS9 In my opinion, wiping out civilian cities only works in a few cases:
1.) The leaders are concerned about the welfare of its people (USA?).
2.) The leaders are concerned about the future of their economy and believe we have the power and willingness to destroy mass portions of their infrastructure (Japan ww2).
3.) The leaders believe they cannot win, but can hold on to power if they surrender (France ww2).

It does not work in the following situations:
1.) The leaders are driven by an extremist genocidal ideology that encourages them to fight their enemies to the death (Iran).
2.) The leaders have enough firepower to retaliate (Russia).
3.) The leaders think they can harm their opponent enough that even if they lose, they can recover and take them down at a later time (China).
4.) The leaders believe that they will lose power even if they surrender.(Germany ww2)

@SgtRock: Sadly I agree. Some ex-pats, like the Germans who came here during WW2 and helped develop the atomic bomb, love America and really want to help, but others are spies. We want to think the best of people, but we must remember that we have enemies who want to DESTROY us. It may not be a good idea to give our potential enemies access to top secret technology..

@MilMom: OPINION: No, these will not be “Made in China” because they will be used AGAINST China in the upcoming war…China, Russia, and Iran are in bed together to weaken the United States so that they can take control over Asia, Europe, and the Middle East respectively. Their plan is threefold:

1.) Destroy confidence in the US Economy and displace the dollar as the World Reserve Currency
2.) “Re-align” our trading partners in the middle-east to cut off our oil supply
      3) Spread our military thin to open us up for attack along the southern border.

These countries believe that by doing this, they can weaken the US enough to force us to withdraw, leaving Asia, Europe, and the Middle-East for the taking. This, I believe is their plan…

As long as liberal workers aren’t throwing metal shavings into the works…or the redundancy propagated boards don’t fall apart…the things some people know but typically not reported in the news.

You’d not believe who works on the production line, but now the news has reported some of them…some programs were so bad that they had a redundancy factor of THREE (3)…you could pull the boards and parts would fall off of them but put the same boards after the shake test and the bloody thing would do what it was designed to do…and the cost of which increased over the base price of the contract during the per-production qual testing…FICA/PICA.

Is it worth it, yes…should primes and subcontractors be more active in policing their work force, hell yeah. Will the Unions let them NO!

One thing you missed – Hitler never submitted. In his insanity, he fully believed in the middle of April 1945 that he could still win the war. In 1943, Rommel begged Hitler to sue for peace at that time, and demand that to stop aggressions, Germany could keep what they had taken. If Hitler had done that, our world map would have looked a lot different.

I’m one of those nut jobs that studies the past (and WWII has always interested me) in the hopes of learning from our past mistakes – and have studied Hitler and Hirohito as much as I have been able to..

This isn’t the business world, 450 billion of that 500 billion had to be kicked back to minorities, so they could kick back 400 billion of it to members of congress’s election campaigns. So this will end up being like several trillion in cuts, since you know congress has to get back their 400 million, and you can never cut minority funding.

@LastFrontier: No friend, I am NOT joking. The cuts are spread over a period of ten years, making that about $50 billion in cuts a year. The US Military budget runs somewhere between $693 billion and $1.3 trillion dollars (depending on what you count as military spending). Going with the lower of the two, that gives us 7.2% in military cuts.

SUCK IT UP…trim the fat, streamline, and become more efficient. I know that we can cut 7.2% if we really dig deep. I have lots of friends and family who have served and they all say the same thing: The military wastes too much money. Stop wasting and reign in the spending.

      ****
Because, since bill clinton took office, the defense budget IS THE ONLY BUDGET TO SEE REAL CUTS, and they’ve been doing it for years. Our military does more training on similators than real life, already because of the expense of fuel and munitions. Our officers pay for their own ammo out of pocket to qualify at the firing range! Did you notice there was NO money in the stimulus for ammunition and weapon building? Just windmills & solar panels!

You are incorrect none of them are actual cuts they are reductions in the predicted growth of their budgets. NOT A REAL CUT, there has never been a real cut in the military in my lifetime. 85′. Not to mention but Mr. I Agree With Military Spending “I actually like military spending because it creates jobs”, military spending is likely as egregious than domestic socialize spending. It does not go towards any productive function. Bombs only destroy, they do not create. So it is taking tax payer money, giving an inflated government pay to a bomb maker whose CEO gets paid to lobby Republicans, to produce something that does nothing to make the people more prosperous or wealthy. If military spending helps the economy then so do social programs, they are the same process, but that‘s the point they aren’t productive or efficient.

It scares me some of the kill everyone crowd on here. “we need to go back to destroying whole cities, people need to suffer and pay for the mistakes of their leaders otherwise they’ll never rise up against them”. Same could be said about 9/11 from the perspective of the Saudi hijackers who wanted US bases out of Saudi Arabia, and for the US govt to halt sanctions that killed millions of Iraqi children. What was the outcome of that? Did we rebel against our government? Nope. Did we suffer? Yep. So foolish are the warmongers. How would you like it if Libyan nuked NYC? Would we deserve it? Are we responsible for our governments misdeeds? SMH at all

One thing to remember – because of contracts, the military wind’s up with $35,000 toilet seats and $19,000 hammers. I was an Avionics Tech (AT) in the Navy, and was with an A-6 squadron. One of the guys (before I got to the squadron) was in port, still on the carrier, and needed a resistor to repair a radio. On-board Stores didn’t have the one he needed, so he went ashore and to a Radio Shack (this was in the 80s, when R/S still had parts!), and bought 2 for 19 CENTS. he went back to the ship, put one in the radio, and voilà! it worked! He was court-martialed for using a “non-military spec part” – btw, that 9.5 CENT resistor cost the Gubmint around 75 DOLLARS – and it’s made by the same people!!!

If we need a hammer, electronic part, or toilet seat, why can’t we get them for the military from the same place the civvies get them, for the same price?? Save LOTSA $$$$$.

For this gang to stay in power, I can only see and artificially created emergency, like a nuclear explosion somewhere in the US, that would suspend the Constitution, make it a true police state and keep these on top of us indefinitely by force, fear, etc., like it is was done in those countries from where they got the ideas. Those killed over 100 million people to keep the power. The same system can work here too. The US population has not experienced this “benevolent dictatorship” yet. Seems like, we also have to go through it to have none of it later.
Smart people learn from others mistake. We don’t seem to. Those who are the Takers now, would go to any length to have him forever to live off the Makers. A couple of nuclear explosions would play into their hands, so they can keep on sitting at home, watching TV, playing games, getting high, etc.
The Occupy guys were a good example, asking for more. Even if some had legitimate complains. It was a mixed bag.

Don’t need anything as drastic as a nuclear bomb blast – just the OWS jerks coming back and becoming violent around, say, September. Obucky declares martial law, and suspends the elections “for the protection of the American people”. Or, if he loses the election, then OWS jerks get violent -say – around Thanksgiving. He declares martial law, and “postpones” the swearing-in of the next prez and Congress.

Unless the military steps in with a coup at that point, and arrests the slimeballs for high treason, there WILL be a violent, bloody, armed revolt, leading to Civil War II. And I can see 90+% of the military siding with the People against the administration, IF they get involved.

Boys and Girls take a note here; the aircraft that deliver the munitions are the best ever manufactured, the crew chief is the best trained and motivated, the pilots well educated and battle hardened. And the grunt on the ground that orders the precision airstrike is willing to kick anyone’s a$$ with little pay and lives in the worse conditions.
The young men and women that serve our nation are the best and the brightest that America has to offer. They have all volunteered from the comfort of a free nation that has been at war for over 10 years.

I worry not about our ability to have the best weapons on earth. I know people that are in that business and there is NO doubt we are #1 in that game. The only limiting factor is to have an administration that has the stones to actually use them. Was it easy for Truman to drop the bomb……HELL NO. In one of his biographies he said it was a decision that will haunt him forever but it had to be done. IMO all we need to do is send a CLEAR message to these nut jobs in the mid east, and elsewhere, that are poking and prodding us. Just an attention getter would be fine….not in an area where people live…..but somewhere they can all see and will for sure read about. Don’t threaten…promise…. and show you have the stones to carry it through.

Sure, let’s just send a small nuclear warhead onto foreign sovereign soil without direct provocation and without ensuring the area is clear of all human (and unless we want PETA on our butts, animal) life and see how well that goes. Could you imagine if anyone in charge in China, Pakistan, India or a whole host of other nuclear armed countries actually felt like that? Better yet, imagine if one of those countries just wanted to prove to us that they had the military capability to destroy us and dropped a nuke or even just the equivalent of a JDAM in the middle of the Nevada desert.

What would you do then? Would you say, “Oh, they‘re pretty much BA’s and we shouldn’t mess with them” or would you grab your rifle and go to the nearest recruiting station and demand a seat on the first plane out? If you really think that bombing a foreign nation without direct provocation in the form of military action against our territory is somehow cool or will decrease the possibility of open war then you are wrong and most likely mentally defective.

Contrary to some belief, force is often the only language that people like the Ayatollah and his cronies in Iran can hear. And while I don’t appreciate collateral damage, seeing a city burned by a small star is usually enough to put the fear of god back into the them.
If all these countries keep trying to act all big and bad building up a small nuclear arsenal, then perhaps it is time for the real powers to remind them that we have been at this game for a long time, and that for all their bluster they do not have anywhere near the ability to match the big boys arsenals (Russia, USA and China in that order).
On a side note, a precision nuclear weapon would be an incredible advance scientifically and for weapons design. Instead of a weapon designed for wiping out an area, you could focus all that power on a single target. Not to sound disturbing, but the prospect of a second nuclear age does make me quite giddy.

It never ceases to amaze me about the hypocrisy of the so called “republican conservatives” here in mass. They claim to be Christian, they claim to be pro-life. Nowhere in the bible I read did it say we should go commit mass murder and empire building. Let me fill you folks in on something. War is NOT pro life. Get it? Furthermore, commiting an act of war without direct provocation makes you to be nothing better than the “terrorists” you hate and fear so much. Yes, we all have the right to defend ourselves, it’s a God given right, no matter your age, color, sexuality, religion or economic background. But defending yourself is not commiting preemptive wars of aggression. It saddens me to see that we have become Nazi Germany. So ready to believe the “party” when they tell you to be afraid, so ready to believe that it’s quite ok to defy God and murder. What really sickens me about some of you is your apparent eagerness to go to war in God’s name. Working yourselves up to go fight a religious war of aggression. For shame, my Nation, and the so called conservative movement have sold out our Constitution, and most importantly, have spit on God’s word. So many here don’t really believe in Natural Rights. If they did, they would not be so bloody eager to violate those very Rights of someone else, especially when they have not attacked you.

I guess it is OK that they have declared that Israel should not exist, and all Jews should be killed? Since the inception of this country we have been the beacon of justice and strength, and have defended all that were victims of oppression and holocausts. Since WWII we have lost our ability to fight to WIN. Draws have been acceptable….that is why we are where we are. These people WILL wipe us out given the opportunity….one way or another. Are all of them dangerous……of course not but the ones that are need to be dealt with. It took the bomb to get the PEOPLE of Japan to say….enough…the leaders didn’t care one bit. They would have sacrificed everybody for THEIR cause. The danger is that the leaders truly think they have some calling to eliminate the little and great satan. What do you propose to put an end to it?

Ok, my WWII interests are kicking again.. The 2atom bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed fewer people (including the fallout and radiation sickness, in addition to the actual blasts) that ONE of the firebomb raids over Tokyo. It was the IDEA that we would use such weapons to clear out entire cities in advance of the planned invasion of japan in 1946 that gave Hirohito the option to give total, unconditional surrender to America, when surrender was considered SO shameful that one should kill oneself before surrendering!

Can you imagine what the psychological effect of a nuke small enough to be shot out of a field gun, with the precision of a sniper rifle at close range, and the destructive power of a 20,000 lb BunkerBuster? Knowing that we could put one of these in your window from miles away with minimal fallout would be (I think) enough to say “um… let’s think about this for a minute…”!

@HUCKSQR – it‘s not so much that we’re willing to snuff out large numbers of people, it’s the IDEA of being able and willing to, that makes the enemy stop and think a bit, thus saving lives on BOTH sides. And BTW, we’re NOT attacking people that are innocents, we’re going after those who have or are planning to do harm to us and others. The USA is attacking for defense. Remember the old saying “The best defense is a good offense”? That’s what we are doing!

The Constitution says nothing about using the military against citizens except that every citizen has a right to due process. Of course what always happens in “emergencies” is that our rights are put on hold and mean jack didley to politicians. This is why after union forces were used to police southern states following the war of northern aggression and southern recession a law was put into place banning the Army or Navy from policing the citizens of this nation. It is called the Posse Comitatus Act. Also, if you want to learn about it you should read it as opposed to reading the wikipedia article because it was written by someone who obviously had an agenda.

There’s one hope: MOST of the people that join the military are conservative, or else they wouldn’t be joining the military. Most believe in the Higher Calling, and believe fully in the Oath. There aren’t very many that join JUST for the bennies. IF Obucky, Soros & Co were to order the Army (say) to fire upon civilians, those generals (or admirals) would (should!) deem that order illegal, and disobey it. And MOST enlisted military – who actually have the guns – and the officers who fly the aircraft – would be HIGHLY reluctant to fire on civilians, UNLESS their base/position were under direct attack.

Before I was ever allowed to work on defense systems that really blow stuff up, monitor, and “other” battlefield deployment non personnel, I worked on the project at Ft. Knox developing simulated warfare systems. Literally fantasyland (disneyland) computerized warfare, counter insurgency technology. If the average person was to see the heart of even that now antiquated technology in operation they would be stunned to sci-fi level amazement. The US capabilities today is in realty 20 and 30 year old gadgets and technology. Tomorrows warfare has already been fought for that length of time as well. We have 20 and 30 year advanced technology already in test phases, and some of it is already perfected, and mind boggling. The US is prepared for brown war, blue war, and green war that is so advanced that the world will be trying to catch up for decades. But it‘s the silver warfare and clear warfare that almost guarantee’s American superiority for a hundred years. By that time warfare will be obsolete.

And the title of the piece here is, “How the Islamic states dominate the UN human rights council,” and there are 57 of them. So did Obama just lose his bearings, or was this a more telling slip, ladies and gentlemen? Obama’s 57 states, not just a simple gaffe.
