‘Top Gun’ Director Tony Scott Dies After Jumping From Bridge in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tony Scott, director of such Hollywood blockbusters as “Top Gun,” ”Days of Thunder“ and ”Beverly Hills Cop II,” died Sunday after jumping from a Los Angeles County Bridge, authorities said.

Scott’s death was being investigated as a suicide, Los Angeles County Coroner’s Lt. Joe Bale said.

The 68-year-old Scott jumped from the Vincent Thomas Bridge spanning San Pedro and Terminal Island in Los Angeles, authorities said.

U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Jennifer Osburn told the Daily Breeze that a suicide note was found inside Scott’s black Toyota Prius, which was parked on one of the eastbound lanes of the bridge.

Getty: Director Tony Scott arrives with his family on the red carpet for the premiere of the film 'Unstoppable', at the Regency Village Theater in Los Angeles on October 26, 2010.

The British-born Scott was producer Ridley Scott’s brother.

Several people called 911 around 12:35 p.m. to report that someone had jumped from the Vincent Thomas Bridge spanning San Pedro and Terminal Island in Los Angeles Harbor, according to Los Angeles police Lt. Tim Nordquist.

A dive team with Los Angeles Port Police pulled the body from the murky water several hours later, Nordquist said. Scott‘s body was taken to a dock in Wilmington and turned over to the county coroner’s office.

One lane of the eastbound side of the bridge was closed to traffic during the investigation. Cargo vessels moved at reduced speeds through the east side of the port’s main channel during the search, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

Investigators found a note in Scott’s black Toyota Prius, which was parked on the bridge, according to the Los Angeles Times. That note listed contact information. A suicide note was later found at his office.

The British-born Scott, who lived in Beverly Hills, was producer and director Ridley Scott’s younger brother. Distinct visual styles mark both siblings’ films — Ridley Scott mastering the creation of entire worlds with such films as “Gladiator,” ”Blade Runner,” ”Alien” and this year’s “Prometheus,” Tony Scott known for hyper-kinetic action and editing on such films as his most recent, the runaway train thriller “Unstoppable,” starring regular collaborator Denzel Washington.

Scott was a thrill-seeker himself in his personal life, an avid rock climber who also liked driving fast cars and motorcycles. Still, filmmaking was his real thrill.

“The biggest edge I live on is directing. That’s the most scary, dangerous thing you can do in your life,“ Scott said in an interview for his 1995 naval adventure ”Crimson Tide.” ”The scariest thing in my life is the first morning of production on all my movies. It’s the fear of failing, the loss of face and a sense of guilt that everybody puts their faith in you and not coming through.”

Tony was the first of the Scott brothers to enjoy blockbuster success with “Top Gun,” starring Tom Cruise, the top-grossing film of 1986 at $176 million. Scott teamed with Cruise again four years later on the hit “Days of Thunder.“ He also had a sequel to ”Top Gun” in development.

But Ridley Scott later managed more and bigger hits than his brother and earned a level of critical respect never achieved by Tony Scott. “Gladiator” won the best-picture Academy Award for 2000 and earned Ridley Scott one of his three best-director nominations; Tony Scott never was in the running for an Oscar, and critics often slammed his movies for emphasizing style over substance.

Even Scott admitted that it was a challenge to infuse drama into some of his scenarios — for example, cars racing in circles in “Days of Thunder.” In an interview for that 1990 summer hit, Scott was blunt about where some of the ideas came from.

“I went back and I stole from all race movies to date,” Scott said. “I took the better elements, then tried to build on them. Really, the speed, the energy and the placement of the audience inside some of the cars came in the editing room. …

“I’m always pushing for something new and fresh in the way things are shot, and the rest happens in the editing room. … The real speed comes from the cutters and what they do with the celluloid.”

While Ridley Scott had an auspicious start to his film career with 1977′s acclaimed period drama “The Duellists” and 1979′s “Alien,” Tony Scott bombed with his debut, 1983′s supernatural romance “The Hunger,” with David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve.

He vaulted into Hollywood’s top ranks the next time out, with “Top Gun,“ followed a year later by ”Beverly Hills Cop II,” both with producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

The two brothers ran Scott Free Productions and were working jointly on a film called “Killing Lincoln,” based on the best seller by Bill O’Reilly. Along with countless commercials, their company produced the CBS dramas “NUMB3RS” and “The Good Wife” as well as a 2011 documentary about the Battle of Gettysburg for the History Channel.

Tony Scott said he gained perspective by mixing things up between film, TV and commercials.

“I like changing the pace of my life, changing my discipline. It gives me ideas for how to see the world differently,” Scott said in a 2007 interview.

Besides “Unstoppable,” Scott worked with Washington on four other movies: “Crimson Tide,” ”Man on Fire,“ Deja Vu” and “The Taking of Pelham 123.”

In a tweet Sunday, director Ron Howard said, “No more Tony Scott movies. Tragic day.”

Director Jon Favreau tweeted, “Such sad news about Tony Scott. Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.”

Other Scott films include “True Romance,” written by Quentin Tarantino, “The Fan,” with Robert De Niro, and “Enemy of the State,” starring Will Smith.

Scott was married to actress Donna Scott, who appeared in several of her husband’s films. They have twin sons.

Completed in 1963, the 6,060-foot Vincent Thomas Bridge links rises 185 feet at its highest point above the Los Angeles Harbor. Many have taken their lives by jumping from the span.

The bridge has been used in many Hollywood productions, among them “Charlie’s Angels,” ”Gone in 60 Seconds“ and ”The Fast and the Furious.”

    The only vehicle I have that gets over twenty mpg, is my Harley. Gotta do my part to get rid of fossil fuels, so we stop polluting the earth.why in the He!! would a rich guy like that do himself in? if he was in pain, he could afford all the drugs he needed to feel good. Heck, by the looks of it, he had a smokin’ hot wife to take care of him. Anyways, back to the environment. Why do they say fossil fuels are nonrenewable? When did the earth stop producing them? Why do they say wind, and solar are green energy? Wind, and solar farms don’t look very natural to me. They also take a lot of materials, and space. Why do they say that fossil fuels pollute the earth? Don’t they come from the earth? WHO ARE THEY???? THEY ARE THE EXPERTS!!!! THEY ARE PAID BUY THE GOVERNMENT!!!!! WHAT DO YOU THING THEY’RE GOING TO SAY?????

    I don’t care what this mans politics were, or about his succecces and wealth. None of it means anything.
    This man followed after the World, and it could not fill him. “For what is for a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul.”

    I pray our Father in Heaven, that you throw his sins and tears into the sea of forgetfulness, and give him no more cares of this world, and give him your never ending love and peace.

    I pray Father for the burdens of grief and heartache be lifted from his family, and they worry no more. And I pray our Father in Heaven, that you send the Holy Spirit to comfort them, in this their hour of need.

    I humbly pray for this our Father in Heaven in the name of your Son Jesus Christ….Amen…….

      I also realize that while a successful person as far as the world is concerned, he didn’t trust GOD to take care of him if he really had some serious physical problem. We must trust GOD! Yes, we will all die someday of something and GOD is our only hope for the future after we pass on.

      You just implied exactly what Satan said to Jesus
      on The Third Temptation of Jesus Christ…

      Please read … let it sink in…and then you need to think about
      The one you choose to follow.

      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      LUKE 4: 9,10,11,12
      Satan brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple,
      and said unto him, If you are the Son of God, cast yourself down from here:
      For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over you, to keep you:
      And in their hands they shall bear you up, lest at any time
      you dash your foot against a stone.
      And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said,
      “You shall not test the Lord your God“.
      Don’t generalize. You can’t judge books by their covers. Movies too. The same goes for actors, directors and behind-the-scenes people. Try and look at some films through ‘different eyes’. Plots, subplots and every last detail in every scene. (i.e. sets, props, even down to pictures and posters hanging on walls.) You might be surprised at what you’ll see. There’s lots of closet conservatives there. They can’t open their mouths because of fear of finding work. Just like you or me.
I swear on my mother‘s future grave that if he was driving a Ferrari enjoying his well earned success he’d NEVER park it along side a road and jump off that bridge.       Mr. Scott was responsible for a plethora of great movies. Two of my all-time favorites, The Last Boy Scout and True Romance, are horribly underrated. If you missed either of these, please remedy that ASAP. They’re not for kids, but they are both hugely entertaining from start to finish.
      His body of work is vast and impressive. He had a true talent for making great films. It is a crying shame he didn’t have a talent for weathering whatever storm caused him to jump.
      I will not judge him too harshly until we get the rest of this story. Sometimes, people get turned around and addled to the point that they can be deceived into thinking that suicide is a valid escape.
      The biggest tragedy of all is the fact that he left a beautiful wife and two adolescent sons who are going to be deprived of his guidance through the most difficult years in their path to adulthood.
      Seriously, though, don’t go jumping off a bridge before you see The Last Boy Scout or True Romance.
      I’m so crushed by your comment, maybe I feel like jumping off of a bridge. But wait, i have a life insurance policy that doesn’t pay if my death is by suicide. I will try another way, since jumping off a bridge can not be considered to be an accident.
      I wonder who Tony was trying to get revenge on? Are his parents still alive? Tony wasn’t a confused, teenager, inspired by drugs. He was a VERY old, and successful adult. He had a successful career, a barely out of of puberty, trophy wife, and young sons, with her. Do I feel compassion for him? No, I don’t. I do feel compassion for his young sons.
      How do kids deal with “daddy killed himself” instead of wanting to be with us?
      Hey, wait just a second here. Anna Nichole Smith married strictly for love. Why would you imagine Tony Scotts wife didn’t marry for the very same reason? Shame on you!
      Anna is dead and buried. Gold digging didn’t do her much good, did it?
      WoW .. How could you possibly know why she married him?? You don’t even know these people!!
      He was obviously a gifted and creative human being.. probably a very loving man and I happen to think he was fairly attractive. Could it be she actually loved him?? I despise people like you who think if a man has money and the wife is younger (my husband is 13 years older than myself) the wife is automatically a gold digger. Such small minds…. bitter.. jealous and pathetic people.
      As for the rest of you making snide jokes/remarks.. the man is DEAD couth up!! God alone knows what this man was dealing with.
    Your mind can hurt you more than your body can.
    That bridge must be on the highway to the danger zone.
    He probably got so much grief for producing Bill O‘Reilly’s latest book that he decided to sleep with the fishes.
