Top Iowa GOP Donors Venture to New Jersey to Court Gov. Christie

Top Iowa GOP Donors Venture to New Jersey to Court Gov. Christie

AP

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Some of Iowa’s top Republican campaign contributors, unhappy with their choices in the developing presidential field, are venturing to New Jersey in hopes they can persuade first-term Gov. Chris Christie to run. The entreaty is the latest sign of dissatisfaction within the GOP over the crop of candidates competing for the chance to run against President Barack Obama in 2012.

Bruce Rastetter, an Iowa energy company executive, and a half-dozen other prominent Iowa GOP donors sought the meeting with Christie, the governor’s chief political adviser, Mike DuHaime, told The Associated Press. The get-together is set for the governor’s mansion in Princeton, N.J., on May 31.

The meeting speaks to what some Republicans nationally say is a lack of enthusiasm about the emerging roster of contenders. It’s also unusual because candidates typically court Iowans, who get the first say in presidential nominating contests, and not the other way around.

Christie, who was elected in 2009 and has drawn national attention for his tough talk and battles with Democrats, has explicitly and repeatedly rejected the idea of running for the White House. Yet that hasn’t deterred these Iowans.

“There isn’t anyone like Chris Christie on the national scene for Republicans,” Rastetter told the AP. “And so we believe that he, or someone like him, running for president is very important at this critical time in our country.”

It’s not the first instance this year of Iowa Republicans seeking to widen the 2012 field. A former state party chairman, Steve Grubbs, approached Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels’ top aide in Indianapolis last month. Daniels expects to say in a few weeks whether he will enter the race.

Nationally, Republican donors have encouraged ex-Fla. Gov. Jeb Bush, brother of former President George W. Bush, to reconsider his decision not to run. There’s also talk of Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, chairman of the House Budget Committee, as a possible entrant.

The mission by Rastetter is significant because it reflects the lengths to which some in Iowa will go to have more options as they choose a Republican to challenge Obama.

Rastetter represents a core GOP constituency in Iowa, business conservatives who favor nominees more identified with the philosophy of low taxes and limited government than with cultural issues. They’re similar to those activists who urged George W. Bush, then the Texas governor, to run in 2000.

The Iowa delegation to New Jersey includes developers and entrepreneurs essential to pro-business Republican Terry Branstad’s winning comeback campaign for governor last year.

Rastetter citied Christie’s “blunt, direct leadership style. You always know where he stands, what he means. You don’t need an interpreter.”

Rastetter met the governor at a Branstad fundraiser in Iowa last fall. “He clearly understands smaller government, less government spending, job creation, and how to create a better education system – certainly, all the things I and those accompanying me care about,” Rastetter said.

As in Iowa, some influential Republican donors nationally have said the 2012 field taking shape faces a variety of problems. Some candidates are closely associated with social issues such as gay rights that might now connect with independent voters. Others have been tainted by past campaign disappointments or personal foibles. Some simply lack the firepower to beat a skilled incumbent.

“There is a feeling that more candidates of greater renown should be in the contest,” said veteran GOP consultant Mary Matalin. “We all want Reagan, but need to remember that the source of Reagan’s power and popularity was his ideas and philosophy.”

Al Hoffman, who has been Jeb Bush’s top campaign fundraiser, said the pressure for Bush to run has ebbed in recent months as he has insisted he will not be a candidate.

“I have had enough heart-to-hearts with him to the point where he very politely has said, please don’t raise the issue again,” said Hoffman.

Should Indiana’s Daniels decide not to run, the pressure could increase on Christie.

Christie, a former U.S. attorney elected governor only 15 months ago, has been adamant and at times colorful in insisting that 2012 is off the table.

By agreeing to meet with Rastetter’s group, Christie is not hinting at a change in plans, DuHaime said. But the contacts could help him as he seeks to expand his leadership in the party, whether it’s influencing the 2012 nomination or preserving valuable contacts for the future.

“To the extent he cares about the party and the nominating process, knowing more people, like Bruce, that are influential in that process is a good thing,” DuHaime said. “This is simply part of getting to know other people who are going to be key players in the process.”

Christie wowed an audience of 800 Iowa Republicans last October when he headlined a Branstad fundraiser in a suburb of Des Moines, the Iowa capital. The former prosecutor’s tough-talking “put up or shut up” advice for the party impressed Rastetter, who was Branstad’s top fundraiser.

Branstad, who hasn’t endorsed a presidential candidate, has sung Christie’s praises for his get-tough approach to spending, especially public employee pensions and benefits. He said after hearing Christie speak in October, “I don‘t think I’ve been that inspired by a speech since Ronald Reagan.”

It‘s inspiration that Florida’s Hoffman said is lacking most of all in the 2012 hopefuls, and something their opponent has in plenty.

“Obama is the most masterful campaigner I’ve ever observed,” Hoffman said. “Our problem is we have a number of candidates who would make great presidents, but very few that make great candidates.”

So, I guess if you have the temerity to question where Allen West stands on the issues, the Blaze deep sixes your post because Glen likes the guy. So, where does he stand on illegal immigration, medicare, medicaid, WIC, welfare, disproportionate taxation ( ie 47% of the deadbeats not paying fed income taxes) military interventionism, closing unneeded military bases, being the world’s policemen, etc etc. Or is it just the fact that he discharged a sidearm near the head of an iraqi captive in order to secure intel to save his men that is appealling? Is that it? Come on, where does he stand?

@Entropy – Much of his campaign and Tea Party videos are on where he clearly states his position on the issues. He is against amnesty and wants to secure the border, he says everyone must have a stake in paying taxes and that he would have never extended unemployment benefits. He says that he was a success not because of the government. He says the Constitution says promote the general welfare, not provide welfare.

Christie and West would be an excellent ticket. Both are passionate, fiscally conservative, and well educated in the constitution.

From what I have so far seen neither seems to be the darling of the social conservatives, which might be fatal for the primaries, but would be favorable in terms of winning the general election.

Mitt Romney is not running for his own personal gratification or ego, he is running because the country is in serious trouble with serious problems and he knows that he can fix them. He has been nothing but honorable and I cannot understand why everyone is trying to find anyone but him when he is very much by the book when it comes to following the constitution. He never took a salary as Governor and 100% of the proceeds from his book “No Apology” goes to charity and insisted on only $1.00 for his salary while President of the Salt Lake Olympics until they showed a profit and the reason he was called on was because they were headed for disaster. I can almost guarantee he will not accept a salary as President until the country is in the black as well.

Yes, we like Christie – especially my husband…..“insiders” are saying they think only someone who is TRULY “outwardly gutsy” and outspoken against Obama & policies could win — has to be “firey” and not afraid of “pc”, or anyone for that matter — and not only that, but able to express it in a very enthused, bold way. That’s why people prefer Christie & Trump even, while we appreciate those like Ron Paul, West and the rest. Of course don’t think Trump is the ideal either – problems there. But, unlike most, I still say it’s too early & unexpected, traumatic things will probably happen to change minds & propel those who haven’t gotten in yet to run. Also don’t rule out Hillary running instead of Obama. Yes, at the moment it seems like Sarah’s popularity has waned, but I really think she may run and before next year, people will start getting excited about her again. If not then, in 2016. Perhaps we could have some of the others in authoritative cabinet positions and VP. I really think our first female president is on the way in the very near future.

For all those who think Governor Chris Christy would make a great Presidential Candidate for the GOP, let me just remind you of a few things:

Chris Christy is for Comprehensive Immigration Reform

Why did he campaign for Mike Castle? Why would you go out of your way to campaign for one of the most left wing republications in Congress? Why would he do that?

Why does Governor Chris Christy continue to keep funding, despite the dire financial situation in New Jersey, “Green Initiatives” when your states one hundred million in the red just in unfunded liabilities?

Governor Chris Christy does not support the 2nd Amendment.

I need to make sure that Governor Chris Christy supports Border Security and not as part of Comprehensive Immigration Reform but as part of Border Security, National Security, and Law Enforcement Security.

Why did Governor Chris Christy appoint a radical to the bench as he appointed one who represented detainees at Gitmo.

      In other words:
Supports Green Energy and Cap & Trade.

Refuses to support States Lawsuit against Obamacare.

      Opposes the AZ Immigration Law.

Supports a clear path to legalization.

      Favors gun control

      Strongly supported Clinton’s Gun Ban

He opposes attempts to permit Conceal and Carry Laws in New Jersey

Refuses to take a side on the Ground Zero Mosque.

Let me make this very simple, Chris Christy is no Conservative!

He also has a great track record. I personally hope he can be persuaded. There are other good candidates, but I just don’t see them effectively outdoing Obama in a real debate. Although I know and believe the O is talking out of both sides of this mouth (because I am one of those Americans that studies the real facts), I don’t think most Americans realize just how much bull crap comes out of his mouth. @DRATTASTIC,

Mitt Romney is far from an empty suit and not by any means the choice of the Washington establishment. They feel very uncomfortable with him as they know he will not even come close to doing their bidding. They went so far out of their way in 2008 to sabotage his campaign using Charlie Crist, Sen. Martinez, McCain and Huckabee along with the media it wasn’t funny. What happened is the establishment learned their lesson in giving us McCain and now they realize that if they want the Presidency they may have to back Mitt Romney. They would rather have almost anyone but him as he is by the book institutionalist. That is why there is such trying to back anyone but Mitt Romney up. But it looks like the American people do not see the big picture and if they do not get behind Mitt, Obama will get reelected.

Watch this video and then decide if Mitt Romney is an empty suit. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1661840169999707395#

Allen West, if persuaded to run, would probably be the only candidate that could win against Obama. And he absolutely is the only man who could dig us out of the hole that Obama is putting us in. We need his leadership and a return to American values. I just don’t understand why the republicans are not knocking on his door.

I‘m afraid Sarah’s star has come and gone, and although Ron Paul’s ideals are inspiring, he, personally, isn’t. Of all potentials, Col. West isn’t even running, who seems to be the ideal package. How does that translate into national voter interest? For example, it is hard to imagine Christie on the presidential campaign trail firing up a national base.

IMHO…..if we have to ask or beg a person to run, and to help our [and their] country, then maybe that person is NOT who we need nor want as Pres.
I want someone who can see what is happening and is willing to do what is best for our country, not what is best for that person.
I want a person who will stand up and tell it like it is….our country is going to he11 and Obama is at the throttle with his foot on the pedal.
I want a person who understands that our country is more important than his/her political career.
I want a person who has HONOR. INTEGRITY. CHARACTER. HONESTY.
Allan West comes to mind, but he does not see that his country needs him nor is willing to fight for something that is bigger than his own future.
Christi is NOT who we need. He is a rino.

He probably feels it’s more important that he understands how government really runs and develops a well rounded campaign policy before he runs and has to do it on the fly. Far be it from me to speak for him but If you consider that any rube should be able to beat Obama that would give conservatives a chance to hold the White House and extra 8 years.

I don’t think our leader realize that they must hold even those at the highest office accountable or there really is no republic. There can be no rule of law if those who hold office are exempt. There’s a reckoning coming and the Republicans better get on the right side or they will be an historical footnote. All I’ve seen so far is window dressing, no real results. The Tea Party is going to make politics a results oriented business and if you turn out to be RINO or not a true conservative, your career in politics will be short.

What bothers me about this is simple.

I don’t want the big money boys picking our candidate! If they want to get behind a fiscal Conservative who is against big government, how about Michele Bachmann, Ron Paul, Paul Ryan or even Jim Demint? Every time we let ‘big money’ pick our candidate and sacrifice our principles for a moderate with name recognition, we always lose or end up with a Rino. It‘s time to let ’We The People’ do the choosing.

I don’t believe Christy is a true Conservative. Sure, he’s got plenty of appealing ideas, but he’s got some bad ones as well. He‘s anti 2nd amendment and that’s a spoiler for me. …rf

Think about it: Christi means “Christ” in Spanish – think Corpus Christi, meaning “the body of Christ”. Obama sounds evil, rhyming with Iraq Hussein Osama. (Ever notice his serpentine sssssss?) It is a simple case of good vs. evil. The majority of Hispanics are Christian, specifically Roman Catholic. Sooo, when faced with a choice of Satan vs. Christ, I’m betting most Christians would choose Christie on name recognition alone! :)

Back in the early 1800s, many people wanted Sec. State James Monroe to run for president once Madison was finished. Monroe wasn’t interested. About a dozen governors and senators petitioned him to run. He finally agreed with two conditions: as president he would place people into positions regardless of their party affiliation (which he did with his Sec State John Q. Adams) and also that they would get him on the ballots, as he would not ‘run’ for an office. He probably felt as Washington had that such a thing was undignified. They got him on the ballot, he won.

Just because people have to recruit him doesn‘t mean that Christie isn’t right for the job. Who do you really want for president…someone who really, really wants it? or someone who doesn’t want it, but will do it because he’s needed? Not saying I support Christie, just saying it’s not a bad sign to have to beg someone to run.

The problem is, Republicans do not want Ron Paul, because he is not bought, and he will end the militarism in this country.

So they “pose” questions like “Do you think heroin should be legal herp derp?”

Then the sheep, on this site, are like OMGHEROINIHATERONPAUL.

The question however is: Ron, do you think States should make moral decisions based on their people, including drug use? Ron: Yes, the federal government has no right to make moral judgments, the states should decide if their people want to legalize drug use.

Mitt Romney’s three pillars: strengthen the economy, strengthen our security here and abroad, and strengthen our families. Mitt Romney on Ronald Reagan… His philosophy was a philosophy of strength – a strong military, a strong economy and strong families.

Out of all the candidates that I see mentioned here other than Mitt Romney there are none that are up to the task at hand. If they really loved this country and were not so caught up in seeking the Presidency for the personal prestige and power they would admit that. Mitt Romney is by far the most qualified for the job.

This excuse about RomneyCare is ObamaCare is absolute rubish. Mitt Romney is a conservative who was able to put together a program for Massachusetts. It had never been done before and with anything that hasn’t there are going to be problems. It is constitutional and it was not run down the people’s throats and it did not raise taxes. There were many conservative groups including The Heritage Foundation who were very much for it. Is there problems with it? yes, but is there a human being on earth that could have foreseen all of the unintended consequences in the process of giving the people what they wanted.

Obamacare has been jammed down our throats, totally unconstitutional and will end up bankrupting our country. Everyone could forsee the consequences.

This video is the best insight to Mitt Romney other than his book “No Apology” http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1661840169999707

Good, I’m glad you put time and effort into your choice for a candidate.

Then now you can explain to me, some rebuttal, on the issue I constantly pose here, how Allen West will tackle the Federal Reserve.

In the interview with Glenn Beck, which I’m sure many sheep saved the video file on their computer, he sounded completely unaware of the danger of the Federal Reserve. He also seemed dismissive when posed the question from Glenn Beck.

I went to his congress site, NOTHING on the federal reserve.

If the dollar collapses, this country collapses. So I tend to make the Federal Reserve the number one issue.

SO PLEASE, explain to me how Allen West will solve our financial issue?

I will attempt to this post again…. my previous attempt got censored. Chris Christie is a RINO, why hasn’t he come out against Obama-care? He is for big government programs if it means more money for his state. He is for gun control and is way to pro Sharia law for my blood. He is soft on immigration and just too Obama friendly in general.

What I like about him is his YouTube video moments. His staff does with YouTube what Obama does with the teleprompter. They capture Christie’s finest moments then post them on YouTube so he can build a national following for a future presidential run. He is just a tad bit tougher version of McCain.

Speaking of Allen West I really like the guy, but he is almost too good to be true…Just call me skeptical and he actually has no more experience than Obama had when he ran, so while I really like the guy’s stands on everything I have heard so far. I really think we need to be very careful and take a wait and see with him.

I think our best choice is Gov. Mitt Romney with Allen West as his VP and then fill the cabinet up all of the other candidates who are running. I really would like to see Ron Paul as treasury Secretary. Mitt Romney is on the record that he wants Obama-care repealed and the guy is a genius on financial matters and we really need that worse than anything.

He could easily be a wealthy or wealthier than Trump but if you have followed Romney he is a very giving person and money is not what motivates him. Big Chal

Veterans like Eisenhower make great candidates and Alan West would be just what we need, added strength and no political correctness when it comes to immigration and issues abroad.

      This guy knows his history

Gail my Bell – Citizen United was a movie about Hilary – Read the Supreme Court decision and then complain about corporations and unions that tried to stop it.

@LIBERTARIANSUNITE You are absolutely right that he seemed uninformed on the Fed. I will send him a letter on the dangers, but besides abolishing the Fed, what can we do? Abolishing the Fed will only happen with Libertarians in power, and that isn’t gonna happen – probably only would after a total collapse when people wake up! I mean we can’t even get the Audit!

There is something you can do, vote with your heart, who the qualified candidate is,
we all know that man is Ron Paul.

@LIBERTARIANSUNITE I used to think Ron Paul was way out there, before I became more informed. Sure I’ve dreamed about all of the things he would do away with, eliminating whole departments – that would be sweet!

You may be right, however, I would vote for just about anyone over BO. Christie is not my first pick.

Hopefully they go to Florida District # 22 and secure Allen West as well.

I have to agree with you. Christie is basically a one issue candidate, “deficit”. He would lose big-time support when people found out about his stand on social issues. I could see him better suited for a VP position.

No! Christie is still a liberal! Yeah, when you look at the New Jersey political landscape, he looks really conservative. But when you put him next to real conservatives, he’s more lukewarm than John McAmnesty. Yeah, he took on the teacher’s union. But that doesn‘t mean he’s the conservative we need for the presidency.

I’m so tired of the Republican establishment. They continue to screw everything up. They refuse to get serious about anything!!! I’m done donating to the RNC. From now on, I’m only donating to individual candidates.

We the Tea Party need to reboot this bloated, big government GOP…we need to flush the RINOs and big spenders and hand-wringing nancys out of the party every election until they’re gone.

Ron Paul is not anti-Jew. Ron Paul believes in nations doing what they should do for themselves.

Kinda falls along the lines of the whole militarism thing.

Allen West votes to keep $100 million ObamaCare funding of school clinics….Allen West votes to keep $100 million ObamaCare funding of school clinics…
A Tea Party favorite in the House is turning against the Republican leadership’s strategy on healthcare.

Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.), who has emerged as an outspoken conservative voice among GOP freshmen, cast a surprising vote last week against a bill to scrap part of the 2010 healthcare overhaul. The legislation would repeal $100 million in funding for the construction of school-based health centers. West was one of just four Republicans to vote against the measure, which passed 235-191.

West spokeswoman Angela Sachitano said in an email that the congressman “believes there are bigger funding issues to be focusing on right now including the numerous developments in the Middle East, concerning Pakistan and whether there is a link to [Osama bin Laden] and the recent unity agreement with the [Palestinian Authority] and Fatah and Hamas.”

He also questioned the House’s continued efforts to dismantle the healthcare law on a piecemeal basis, she said.

“He voted to repeal Obamacare, and it was dead on arrival in the Senate,” Sachitano said. “He questions what the goal is of chipping away like this if it’s almost certain that the Senate is not going to take it up.”

I REALLY wish he would run…the rest of these bozos (Ron Paul aside) would drop like flies against him. This is the type of man that is required to reverse our current Progressive/Marxist course in this country.

Of course he is no fool as well — he would certainly loose much of his freedom in the process; what, with doing everything behind bullet-proof glass.
