Top Iranian Commander Says He Would ‘Welcome’ an Israeli Strike as Reason to ‘Get Rid of’ the Jewish State ‘Forever’

A top Iranian commander said he would "welcome" an Israeli strike against Iran as an excuse to "get rid of" the Jewish state "forever." (AP)
A top Iranian commander said he would “welcome” an Israeli strike against his country’s nuclear facilities because it would give Tehran a reason to retaliate and “get rid of” the Jewish state “forever,” Iran’s news agency reported Saturday.
Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, head of the Revolutionary Guard’s air force, vowed that Iran’s response to an Israeli attack would be “swift, decisive and destructive.” At the same time, he called Israel’s threats to strike merely a psychological move against Iran, according to the Associated Press.
The commander’s comments are the latest in the increasingly hostile back-and-forth between Israeli and Iranian leaders. On Friday, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called Israel a “cancerous tumor” that would soon be destroyed. U.S. National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor called Ahmadinejad’s comments “offensive and reprehensible.”
There has been increasing speculation about if and when Israel will strike Iran to take out its nuclear program. Iran maintains the program for peaceful purposes, but Israel sees it as an existential threat. A report last week said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had “almost finally” made the decision to strike.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I admit its more likely he is preparing for a coup at home to take total power; but coutd that be the case?

Posted on August 18, 2012 at 1:45pmOn October 6, 1973 — Yom Kippur War began. How many nations’ air forces were destroyed within three days? On the Golan Heights 150 Israeli tanks faced 1,400 Syrian tanks, and near the Suez 500 Israeli soldiers faced 80,000 Egyptian troops. Okay, the Syrians, and Egyptians had mostly older Soviet T54 and T55 tanks, but the Israelis had a mix of even older tanks. Many rebuilt American and British Shermans (American made of course) did have newer engines, gear and guns upgrading to the Isherman 50, and 51s. After the war, the Israelis rebuilt a boatload of captured T54s and T55s with the same Continental diesel engines that they had installed in those Shermans. Made for a lot of Soviet built diesel irrigation pumps.

Posted on August 18, 2012 at 2:42pmIn context, the commanders comment is a warning to Israel to not dare use military force against them or face irans response of military force.
And what the hell is wrong with a nations military leader saying to his people to not live in fear of an Israeli strike? He Is telling the people that his military will protect them from a nation that is threatening them with air strikes on a daily basis. He put it in harsh words but anyone would speak that way of an aggressor nation that is threatening to drop bombs on them not to mention trying to get the us military to join in or at least back them up.
It breaks my heart to see people who have no problem with the taking of human lives. I’m gonna guess that those of you who Want to attack Iran have never served your country.

That’s what the Soviet Union believed too:
—————————
The Brezhnev Doctrine (Russian: Доктрина Брежнева, Ukrainian: Доктрина Брежнєва) was a Soviet Union foreign policy, first and most clearly outlined by S. Kovalev in a September 26, 1968 Pravda article, entitled “Sovereignty and the International Obligations of Socialist Countries.” Leonid Brezhnev reiterated it in a speech at the Fifth Congress of the Polish United Workers’ Party on November 13, 1968, which stated:
“When forces that are hostile to socialism try to turn the development of some socialist country towards capitalism, it becomes not only a problem of the country concerned, but a common problem and concern of all socialist countries.”
This doctrine was announced to retroactively justify the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in August 1968 that ended the Prague Spring, along with earlier Soviet military interventions, such as the invasion of Hungary in 1956.

I don’t disagree that many hate us, I just don’t think war, especially preemptive, is necessary to keep us relatively safe. (we’ll never be able to totally prevent lone wolf terrorist strikes) It puzzles me that some of the folks on here arguing in favor of this will say we need to help Israel on one line then say that God will not let anything happen to Israel on the next line. Personally, I don’t think they need any assistance because they have our weapon systems and missile defense shield. Their military is far superior to any of their advosaries. That’s just the way I see it. Keep in mind, I personally got burnt by our politicians. I felt betrayed and want to make sure that no one else has to endure that.

Posted on August 18, 2012 at 12:11pmApparently you know very little of what Iranian beliefs are. The would nuke Tel Aviv, and have stated openly that if they lost 50 million people in a counter attack, they would see that as OK. Lose 50 million of your own people just to strike at Tel Aviv. Iran does not care what the loss, the only thing they want to do is cause enough chaos in the world to bring back the twelveth Imam. You need to do some research into what the Muslims believe, before making a statement like you did. The Muslim world would preffer to lose 75% of ALL Muslims if they could just wipe out Israel. They are more willing to die for their faith, than you are to live for yours.

Posted on August 18, 2012 at 12:12pmYour reasoning is sound if we were talking about Russia and the US. What you are failing to account for in your strategic dynamic is that Iran is not logical in it’s decision making.
Iran’s state is not seperated from their religion, in fact it’s integral. It is the closest thing to a modern theocracy that we have. Allah’s will (according to Iran) is that all Jews are to be killed anywhere in the world. Israel’s existence is a deep shame and a blight to Allah. The nation that destroys them will be blessed by Allah and may once and for all settle the dispute between the Shia and Sunni.
Perhaps the leadership there believes that Allah will protect them because they took such a bold step.
When dealing with such a nation, international peer pressure, sanctions, or even Mutual Assured Destruction strategies go right out the window.
How can you reason with a leader who believes bathing the Jewish race in nuclear fire is the will of God?

Posted on August 18, 2012 at 12:25pm@Ranger, How do you know that Iran isn’t a rational actor in this? Aren’t you concerned the media is lying again? I‘m really concerned we’re overreacting and being lied to again. Last week there was an article of an undetected Russian fast attack sub in the Gulf of Mexico. I‘m worried there’s a boomer down there. The potential for escalation on this one is huge, and I don’t believe it will stay overseas this time. I still think we need to take a chill and keep trying to reach a different solution until they actually show signs of aggression. I still think they’re trying to set us up into taking the first shot, so they can rally support in the international community against the aggressors.

Posted on August 18, 2012 at 3:15pmThey want to reclaim Isreal and wipe out the Jews. They may not nuke Isreal, but if war breaks out, they will use nukes as a deterrent to other allied nations. They will threaten but not directly act until they have there axis allies in place. They will act when everything is in place and Great Britain, Philipines, Japan, Canada, France, Spain, Australia, and the US would be potential targets.

I agree with PAKINPASTOR & RANGER1965 on this one.
The faith of the ultra-orthodox is almost unfathomable to most of us. Their faith drives everything they think about, everything they do, indeed explains their very existence; and they cling to it fanatically. That cannot be easily discounted.
We are not dealing with rational people,

Posted on August 18, 2012 at 3:40pmPredicting what a nation will do is rather easy if you can count on most nations doing what is in their own best interest. Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) worked because the US and Russia knew that it was a suicide pact. Even if we would have done more damage to Russia, than they to us (which was likely), the effects would have been devastating for 100′s of years.
But if your leaders believe that your national best interest is to usher in an apocolyptic nuclear war in the Middle East, because this is what God wishes, and that God will protect you and your people……….well?
It’s a wild card dynamic that might be too much of a temptation for Iran.

Posted on August 18, 2012 at 6:14pm@Ranger/Brother_Ed, Yeah, I know it’s some scary sh*t, but I see one path that will lead to certain war, and one where war is likely, but there’s a chance it can be avoided. If I knew for a fact that the news I was given were 100% accurate, I’d be with you guys. It’s just lately, I’ve grown to distrust our leaders and our media, which seems nothing more than a propaganda machine for the government. I haven’t seen Iran act aggressively. The worst thing that can be said is arming Hamas and Hezbolla, which is a pain in the ass and miserable things happen because of it, but on a relatively small scale comparatively. We’re allied with one of their neighbors (Turkey) and have invaded and are occupying their other two neighbors. We have bases completely surrounding them. Some disagree, but I do share RP’s stance that sanctions are an act of war. Then you have Israeli and US news daily talking about striking their nuclear facilities. On top of that, we’re arming Al Queda and other Syrian rebels to overthrow their ally Assad. All this for a country that can’t even refine their own oil, which is drying up according to many experts. There are folks from the CIA that have come out and said we overthrew their legitimate elected government in the 50′s ushering in the brutal shah, and gave Saddam Hussein chemical/conventional weapons to wage war on them. Posted on August 18, 2012 at 6:29pmNow I don’t believe most Americans would approve of these things, but I am wondering what’s going on with the State department in doing these things. If our politicians made mistakes, I’d like to see them corrected. I’d also like to have an honest discussion/debate without anyone questioning my patriotism. I know America is a great country, but that doesn‘t mean some of our corrupt politicians haven’t made some mistakes along the way. I do know for a fact, that they are militarily weak compared to the US. They do not have the capability to wage war accross oceans like we can. Israel has our missile defense systems protecting them in the event they’re attacked, and our fleet is second to none. If nothing else I’d like to see this really debated hard in congress openly and not in think tanks. I do believe we have plenty of time to make sure we make the right decision. I certainly don’t want to see them obtain a nuclear weapon. I‘m not so sure they haven’t already obtained one from Russia or someone else. I just can‘t help thinking that after all the offensive wars we’ve started recently, our support around the world is wearing thin and we shouldn’t be the ones to start the next one. By doing so, I think the world would get sick and tired of us invading countries and it could rally support around those crazies instead of us. Obviously, I have a lot of questions. The more I think about it the more I have. I just want to make sure we’re doing right.

Posted on August 20, 2012 at 2:11pmThe fact is wars are not fought over Religion but used Religion as the only excuse they can think of at the time, Why anyone wants to support large bully nations over a small nation that just wants to be left alone as do the Muslims who love their children more than the hate Jews. Why is it when an Israeli is murdered nothing is said until they retaliate? In that part of the world if you do not defend yourself you are considered a coward. I spent my 4 years in the service of my country but did not learn to hate this country as I see so many brain dead here. I have never been in any country that I did not learn to love them, it is their governments that cause all this hate. The people would just like to be left alone and allowed to make a decent living and not have to spent their lives supporting that government. The laws these governments pass that take away the freedoms are what cause most of the poverty they have. As well as the murders of their own people for that control.

I do not recall what exacely I read. I do not that over the years they have keept allowing the enemy to gain what they won off of them back to where they started in 67, or at least most of it.

Posted on August 18, 2012 at 12:30pmGo back over past Iranian pronouncements about Israel very carefully. You will find no active-tense threats that “Iran will destroy Israel,” but you will find lots of passive-tense statements to the effect that Israel “will be destroyed,“ or ”will be wiped from the face of the earth.” Clever, no? Of course, if Israel foolishly rises to the bait and launches strikes against Iran, all bets would be off and the Iranians could then justify retaliation. Presumably an Israeli attack would precede Iranian acquisition of nuclear weapons, so the counterstrike would most likely be delivered by surrogates such as Hezbollah.

Ever heard of the Yom Kippur War? That was the last time Israel was attacked by massive conventional military forces. Unlike 1967, in 1973 it took several weeks and massive amounts of American aid before the Isaelis could stabilize their defenses and counterattack. And that was a defensive war against relatively small neighboring states, not a war of annihilation against a large country nearly a thousand miles away, with none too friendly states in between.. A war such as you seem to contemplate–not even a limited strike for the purpose of delaying Iran’s nuclear program but an all-out Israeli assault on Iran, with the US holding Israel’s coat, so to speak, would be a very different thing. Be careful what you wish for.
