Topping the White Houses New Online Petition Site? Marijuana LegalizationEveryone probably should have seen this coming.

Earlier this month, The Blaze reported on the White House’s new “We the People” tool, which allows people to create their own online petitions on any issue they choose.

If a petition garners 5,000 signatures within 30 days, the White House promises lawmakers will automatically review it and the Obama administration will issue an official response on the subject.

The site went live Thursday. The first petition to cross the 5,000 signature threshold? One advocating for marijuana legalization.

“Isn’t it time to legalize and regulate marijuana in a manner similar to alcohol? If not, please explain why you feel that the continued criminalization of cannabis will achieve the results in the future that it has never achieved in the past?” the petition reads.

By midday Saturday, the petition had reached nearly 30,000 signatures and was the most popular petition on the site.

Three similar petitions, which have also broken the 5,000 signature barrier, advocate for marijuana legalization as well.

The second most popular petition is one that calls for abolishing the Transportation Security Administration and instead using its “monstrous budget” to fund “more sophisticated, less intrusive counter-terrorism intelligence.

Other top petitions include removing the words “Under God” from the Pledge of Allegiance and the words “In God We Trust” from U.S. currency. The Pledge of Allegiance petition stood at more than 10,000 signatures Saturday, and the currency petition had more than 7,000.

The administration has yet to issue a response to any of the petitions.

      a. the original Aramaic recipe for the holy anointing oil contained Cannabis…IN THE BIBLE
      b. We legalized it during WW2 for hemp production…almost if not all allied parachutes were made from cannabis fiber
      c. find me in the constitution where it says the Feds have the right to regulate individual consumption…and if you do find it..please don’t complain if obama bans trans fats national.

      i wouldnt go that far but the whole idea of being an American is the the ability to choose for ones self (see: personal responsibility). if you decide to smoke weed (which is safer than tobacco and alcohol), so be it. and i have never smoked in my life.

      it is NOT up to the govt to say “we know whats good for you.”

      Here’s the big issue in general. What the “New age progressive communist” is doing through their “Over Regulation” of everything …is to create soft black markets now for the over tax over regulated items. I believe we are a couple years away from seeing a major growth in black market goods and some services. The biggest will probably be in medicines. Followed by alcoholic beverages smokes of all kinds. and any specialized service industry which will be taxed higher in the next year or two by the communists. Fuel and gas stations will be in this group. Home fuels and the delivery system for it will be another. Along with this will come higher crime to steal these higher priced goods …Mark the date and see if this isn’t going to be a growing problem by the time

      I have never drank beer or any other alcoholic beverage. I have never smoked a cigarette, cigar or anything else smoke-able. I have never done any illegal or illicit drug. Heck, I have never even had any pharmaceutical drug prescribed to me by a doctor. It’s about responsibility and discipline. Individual freedom.

      Apparently anti-hemp folks have drank the kool-aid provided by MSNBC and other media sites. It’s so sweet, isn’t it? Well, here’s the bitter truth. We liberty supporters want to legalize Hemp, industrial hemp. Yeah, that hemp. The one our Founding Fathers used to create paper with and actually used to pen the Declaration of Independence on. The one the Pilgrims used to create the sails for their ship the Mayflower when sailing to America. The one Americans used to create the rope that hailed their sail boats together. The one that was ordered by law to be grown by land owners in some colonies. The one Americans used for hundreds of years for medicine, paper, clothes, oil, food, etc. Oh, you didn’t know? Well, yeah, apparently you can’t even smoke it. The amount of hemp you would need to actually be able to smoke the darn thing and for it to have some effect on you would have to be the size of a telephone pole. Yep. The US government even ordered Americans during World War 2 to grow hemp in order to keep up with our industrial demand during the war. They even made a video for us common folk!

      THIS plant called HEMP or cannabis kept the U.S. and its people INDEPENDENT. It kept America off of foreign energy and resources. It kept Americans free from money hungry pharmaceutical companies and off drugs. It kept Americans free from ailments and from being destitute of basic needs like clothes and useful utensils like paper and rope. Heck, even HENRY FORD’s company tampered with the power of HEMP and made an automobile to run on hemp oil. But this was when natural plants and resources were protected by our Government because they were created by God for our benefit and use. When inventions, discoveries and entrepreneurship was encouraged, praised and admired by the American people. When being able to sustain yourself off the fruit of your land was admonished and expected. When the Government and the people understood individual freedom and responsibility. When private property and personal privacy were cherished and secured. When, in America, Americans actually made things, well, for America and Americans. When local produce, goods and services were kept local and made, by hand, on private land, through hard work and sold in America for Americans. When dependency on foreign goods or other services and needs were unheard of.

      Something all of you are forgeting about the difference between alcohol and pot… you can have a drink and not get drunk but you will get high when you smoke some pot. Alcohol in moderation is OK but with pot there is no moderation… you will get high every time. That’s a big difference. Cigarettes may be harmful to smoke but you can‘t get high or drunk on them and your driving won’t be affected or your personality won’t change.

      @the-monk There‘s something you’re forgetting also. Alcohol has killed way more people than marijuana ever will. Drunk driving, over indulgence, brain damage, liver problems, injuries caused by stupidity, domestic violence, assaults or violent confrontations, wife beating, child abuse, killing innocent bystanders while DWI, resisting police orders, a culture of revelry and partying wild, talking without any sense, disturbing the public and disturbing the peace, going bankrupt, losing one’s job, losing ones wife or family, etc. I can go on and on. All caused or influenced under the consumption of Alcohol.

      There’s two types of hemp plants. Industrial hemp and the one the media and politicians like to force down our little brains. Industrial hemp will never cause any damage. Read my previous posts. Labeling the two classifications of hemp together is a smokescreen to not legalize industrial hemp.

      I agree. No matter how bad it is for you, this particular drug does not cause the society any problems in the manner that other substances do. Alcohol, when consumed, causes people to lose judgement skills in such a way that they’re liable to drive to a store to buy more. With pot, the user will wait until sober to acquire more. It really doesn’t do the society any harm, aside from the individual who decides to take it.

      In my humble opinion this is a true non-issue, wait ten years and you won’t have the votes to keep it illegal.

      I don’t do drugs, or alcohol, I do Liberty. I am also not a hypocrite about only wanting to keep the liberties I want. I believe in Freedom & Liberty for all. This does illustrate one of the major problems in our political discourse. You have the Progressive Left & The Neo-Con right trying to force us into one of two camps, either progressive styled communism or neo-con sudo religious fascism, & both sides think their way is the only way for everyone. Both sides are just as guilty in believing they have the one righteous path, & feel completely justified forcing everyone else down it. I think everyone should be able to decide for themselves, and be allowed the right to reap what they sow. In my opinion in the end everyone has to stand before their creator and be judged, besides “Judge not, lest ye been judged” a pretty smart guy said that I think.

      If God hates Pot, does he love barley & hops?

      Why don’t you take a look at the comparison of adults who go from using Marijuana to hard drugs between the USA & The Netherlands(don’t say Holland, that is just a province). All the usage numbers are round about the same, except fewer teens use it over there, except for the category stated above.

      I agree. But there are silly people out there who have never smoked marijuana and they think its like heroin because they were raised on propaganda. It is no different then wine or beer and should be regulated and taxed. Imagine states getting that tax revenue instead of Mexican drug lords…or is 30,000 people killed for these drug wars not enough for people to have a heart yet? How many thousands more need to die before you get it through your alcohol and tobacco soaked brains that keeping it illegal just gives money to criminals…and has NEVER stopped pot from being popular

      I saw a movie on NetFlix that said if hemp was allowed to grow for actually using as hemp, it would put the marijuana trade out of business. If you grow it to smoke it, you have to “sex” them getting rid of the males so it DOES give a high. If there are fields of males, the polen would be everywhere and there would be no female plants that make the high.

      That movie was called Hemp Revolution. There is also True Tale of American Marijuana, High, How Weed Won the West, Hempsters, The Union. Weed got illegalized (if that’s a word, no coffee yet) because of racist policies. Mostly it was smoked by blacks and Mexicans, and the white democrats couldn’t have that. So they made it illegal. They couldn’t regulate it, because it’s a weed and will grow anywhere. Individuals could grow it in their back yard if it was legal.

      There are foods you put in your body necessary for life
      There are drugs you put in your body which alter the process of life
      Pot falls into the drug category
      all drugs are poisons and without regulations can kill or long term or permanently disable
      To keep the mind clear and unaltered it is best not to use pot
      I know some will argue alcohol is the same but
      why does your head hurt about 1 day after a night of drinking
      pot is not that easy it can remain in your system and affect your mind for months or years.

      I agree, I am facing 31 years in prison for 12 plants grown for medicinal use. I am in severe pain have not sold a flake, had a job as a systems engineer for 11 years and I am going to lose everything. Marijuana laws destroy more lives than marijuana.

      People who have never smoked weed should chill. People have this preconception of people who smoke it. They don’t know who it really affects you. I do it. And it is so much better than alcohol! It also helps with my asthma and my anxiety. It helps many people with many things. Seriously! I don’t do it at work. So, it doesn’t affect my job. I’m a successful, productive person. I’m married and we recently bought a house. It helps me relax and deal with stress. It makes me a little droopy when I do it. But so what? I’m not going to hurt anyone on it. It doesn’t make people aggressive. I think it‘s stupid to waste money trying to stop when it’s EVERYWHERE. Anyone who wants to do it, does it, legal or not. It’s a complete waste of resources and money. Make it legal and tax it!!! If you’ve never done it, don’t assume you know what it like!

Why do WE the People need the police to protect us from ourselves? Because we’re only human. .my wife and I go back and forth on this issue. She believes it will reduce gangs and increase tax revenues. I say it will increase gangs when consumption increases. It’s not like making a stil for liquor in your backyard. It starts with weed and then the simple minded ones want something more,…potent? You will want it laced with herion. Been there done that. There are a lot of different types of “CANNIBIS” out there.       I agree. let’s legalize pot and collect the taxes on it. On the other I hand don’t want habitual weed smokers having the governemt pay their medical bills after smoking 30 years of smoking weed daily. No matter what you say, our lungs were not designed to inhale any kind of smoke. When I look at the culture weed prodices, everything from moronic rappers to half wit stoners who are are burned out and are incapable of functioning in the work force I wonder where the USA will be in relation to countries like China in a few years where a strong work ethic is resurfacing. I have seen these kids who at 20 live for weed and have no other meaning in their lost lives but getting high. That will also be the price of legalization just as alcoholism was and is the price of prohibition AND it’s legalization.

      The lumber and coal companies will go out of business the day we allow our farmer’s to produce hemp. Hemp not only can be used for medicinal and clothing purposes, thats not what our government aka our special interests are afraid of hemp and do all they can to not allow our universities not to study the crop. Hemp is earth’s number one biomass resource, which can be turned into methane, methanol, gasoline, comparable to the cost of petroleum, and burns clean.

      I am a Christian, Republican, disabled veteran who would like to be able to use cannabis legally in the privacy of my own home.

      I’m a productive member of society with chronic pain that is treated more effectively and safely with cannabis than with the legal opiates that are prescribed for me.

      The violence on the U.S. Mexico border is largely a result of drug trafficking and we could put these cartels out of business and create American jobs by legalizing cannabis.

      The people who insist on continuing the illegal Drug War continuously ignore the 9th & 10th Amendments to the Constitution, which keeps the decisions of criminalizing or re-legalizing in-State marijuana use, possession, manufacturing, etc. in the hands of the STATES or the PEOPLE. When further pressed about it, they either don’t want to discuss it any further or they come up w/ the notion that “federal law out ranks State laws”, which itself is nonsense ‘cuz the Constitution doesn’t give the feds the power to regulate anything & everything they see fit.

      The States should be free to punish marijuana users as severely as they so desire — which also means they should be left alone to make it completely legal again IF that is what the People want in their State.

      Anyone who is all for the legalizing of weed here’s some questions you need to ask:
      Is today‘s weed the same stuff they smoked back in the 60’s? -No. The THC level is much higher thus causing more mental problems than people think.
      Is weed addictive? -Yes. People who say they can stop stop smoking anytime they want have yet to do so and repeated use develops a dependency in which off of it can cause one to be irritable.
      Can you get a contact high from beer? -No. While I don‘t support alcohol at least when one is sitting next to a person drinking you won’t get contact drunk. However sitting next to a person smoking weed can in fact cause a contact high.
      Will legalizing it bring down crime rates? No. Cartels won’t simply pack up and go home, they’ll find some other venture to use to kill and steal.
      For those who haven’t seen what pot can do to people I suggest taking another look. It should not be glorified nor should it be allowed to be legal for recreational use. It IS a dangerous drug and I ask that people do more research than reading pro marijuana websites that distort the truth or make it sound like it’s harmless. One more question to ask yourselves, if pot isn’t all that bad then why are the Netherlands now (or soon) prohibiting tourists from using pot in their coffee shops? They wouldn’t do such if pot was such an awesome drug right? There must be some type of problem…

      This is a liberty issue. Prohibition didn’t work. Prohibition of anything that people want(free market) will create a black market. Empires were made from forbidding alcohol. Same goes for weed. The Mexican drug cartels are thriving due to the criminality of selling/smoking pot. If they legalized heroin, I wouldn’t start shooting up! De-criminalize it. I’d rather our jails and prisons be filled with violent criminals, rapists and pedophiles. This is an adults only activity. Folks that sell weed and smoke a little, uh, no! P.S. this is just another distraction by the way. There are much bigger, pressing issues facing our country. Keep the folks bickering, and Obama can continue dividing and trying to conquer.     This is an age old topic. I still love the question, “If marijuana and alcohol were both discovered today, do you think they would still be regulated the same way?” Of course they would not be, people in general make WAY to big a deal out of this. There have been 0 recorded deaths related to the use of marijuana, can you say that about any other intoxicating substance out there that is legal? If it was regulated the same way alcohol is then I don’t see any problem with it.

      Make sure you post “facts” accurately. There weren’t direct deaths listed (like overdose) where the drug itself killed the USER. Now go recheck the facts and see how many other types of deaths occurred due to marijuana use (ie. cancer, vehicular accidents, fires, suicides, etc.) and THEN also check to see how many people started off using just marijuana and when the tolerance grew and the desired “feeling” could no longer be achieved so easily, they moved on to bigger better things like heroine, meth, etc.. Tally the deaths from those who “moved on” next, but to be completely fair, dig a little deeper and only use the number of those deaths suffered by or caused by people who “started out” on weed.

    Jedi, you think they aren’t already? I wouldn’t go so far as to say I support legalization, but I don’t have any strong opposition to it. Let me make a couple points though, on topics the “pros” usually raise in their favor. 1) Even in the petition it raises the specious “.. continued criminalization of cannabis will achieve the results in the future that it has never achieved in the past?” This is just an absurd non sequiter. I doubt there is any law which has completely eradicated its subject. You could make the same argument regarding murder and bank robbery. 2) The idea that legalization will be a magic tax source. How? Are you going to restrict sales to only lawful retailers like 7-11 and Walmart? Why, I’m sure there will be NO off-the-books dealing, will there? Haha. What sort of criminal code will you establish to prevent untaxed sales? Gee, sounds like right back where we are now. 3) It will reduce gang/drug violence. Yeah, not much. The bad guys don’t traffick dope and kill each other because they are enthusiastic advocates of personal liberty. It‘s because it’s illegal, and therefore highly profitable. You’ll still have the gangs and the violence. They’ll just be moving different product.

      There may be some black market activity, but it won’t take much of a bite out of the tax revenues from legal pot, because it’s an agricultural commodity that’s easy to produce but hard to produce in large quantities without anyone noticing, and if it was legal it could be produced in such large quantities that competition would make the price too low to justify the risk. Do you see many people growing illegal tobacco in their backyard even though the price of cigarettes is almost all tax? Is the liquor industry taking any kind of major hit from the kind of moonshining activities that were so widespread and well-organized during prohibition?

      Home-grown dope is already a well-established industry. There has never been a well-established, legitimate pot industry, unlike alcohol and tobacco. There is not the equivalence you are reaching for. Further, even making beer at home -which is legal of course- is a rather complex and time consuming operation. Tobacco has a very limited growth range, and likewise, turning a tobacco leaf into a cigar, cigarette, or even chew is also extremely time consuming. Dope is relatively quick and easy to grow.

      Again: there just isn’t the equivalence there. Distributing legal pot would be much more like the farmer’s market at the park on weekends, where the locals bring down the corn and pumpkins and tomatoes. I’ll leave it to your imagination how much of those sales actually get recorded for the 1040 or taxed, where sales tax is even levied on food.

      Finally, there is already such a strong association of illegality with pot, I doubt any heads will be deterred from dealing between friends to avoid taxes. That would probably get laughed at as much they laugh at the existing laws.

      I assume you’ve conceded my other 2 points, thank you.

      I concede your third point that there will still be gang violence and illegal trade in hard drugs, though I think there’s a chance there might be a slight reduction. I think that marijuana serves as a gateway to experimentation with worse drugs less because it gets you high than because laws against it cause otherwise law abiding people to lose respect for the law and fear the police.

      I don’t concede your first ”point,” because I don’t concede that you have one. I don’t believe that laws against marijuana have ever served a necessary or socially useful purpose. I think that they were drafted for only two reasons – to provide something to do for federal cops who were in danger of layoff with the repeal of prohibition, and to protect the oil industry from danger of reduced profits by wiping out industrial hemp growers.

      As for the point I chose to dispute, while “there has never been a well-established, legitimate pot industry,” how long do you really think it would take to start one? I guarantee you that the tobacco, alcohol and food industries are prepared to diversify if legalization ever becomes an imminent possibility. They have plenty of land that could be diverted to new purposes. They probably have illegal seed banks somewhere, and they almost certainly have lawyers ready to try to beat the competition to getting trademarks for the drug slang nicknames of popular strains on or before day one.

      How would legalizing it make it kill more people? I don’t use marijuana but I would venture to say more than half of the adults do. All legalizing it would do is make the people who use it pay taxes on it.

    Legalize and taxing it could go a long way to reducing the debt in this country and providing jobs, unclogging the courts and jails for people with possession charges.

    That alone in my mind is not cause enough for me to vote for someone that otherwise has had a path of destruction as far as this country is concerned.

    You seriously can‘t tell me that Jesus wasn’t a hippie. Long hair, beard, sandals. :-) If alcohol is legal, there is absolutely no argument that can be made to keep marijuana illegal.

      ‘We the people’ get are rights from “God” …Granted by the Constitution

      If you remove GOD …It will automatically void out the Constitution….

      Then in the Absence of the Constitution….there will become a void…

      What will fill that void…? ……….MAN …

      And If …“MAN” (maybe not your guy) …Replaces… the “GOD”..

      It will say “WE THE PEOPLE” …with .”.MAN GIVEN RIGHTS“….

      Then “MAN in charge.. will be able to take our ‘RIGHTS” from “we the people“.

      that’s the BILL OF RIGHTS from ’we the people”

      Meaning say goodbye to whatever “RIGHTS…
      MAN in charge…Wants you to have …

      And say hay ….to king Georg III

      You might not believe in a GOD….but in this case…

      It stops the REPUBLIC from being a MONARCHY….

      Then “WE THE PEOPLE”… will truly be peasants…

      I asked him to please do voluntarily!!! Please reread my post! I might criticize politically but wouldn’t write something religiously offensive attacking or mocking their God!!! If its your opinion that Jesus isn’t God its your choice but to defile his name, which is your right in our great country, isn’t cool and hurtful to Christians!!! Jesus and Father, “Please forgive them bc they know not what they do!!!”

      I believe marijuana should be legal! I will make crime go down considerably and maybe they’ll smoke which is a mellower drug than alcohol and violent crimes will go down while junk food sales rise! I’m with Milton Friedman and Ron Paul on this one!

      THAT is the attitude that got us into the “crisis” (I hate that word now) we’re in now. Fairness is what will make us all equal…. equally poor and pissed off. And we’ll all have Mussol.. err Obama to thank for it.

      The point I was making is that Obama is not going to legalize it. It should be left up to the State’s to decide whether or not to prosecute people for this harmless drug/plant/herb/weed/fiber/food/protein/paper/ clothing.etc etc..

      I agree marijuana is harmless. Except that it causes the munchies which can lead to unhealthy eating habits and costing Americans millions of more dollars in a health care system that Obama has already taken the first step in destroying.

      I’m for trying out the legalizing pot idea. That ideas been floating around for at least 45 years. I’m 58. I don’t see anything wrong with it. I don’t smoke or dilute the buds in golden grain and make gallons of hunchpunch for one heck of a party anymore. People experiment with it and when the thrill is gone, it’s gone. I’ve had my fun with the brownies and making hash. I’ve been lucky by not getting caught by the bearintheair. I have noticed that folks who have never tried it mostly have the wrong idea about the people that use it casually or regularly. I am a Vietnam era vet. Coast Guard. The worst thing I’ve seen with it is that it is sometimes sold along with the gamut of other illegal drugs,cars, guns, etc. because it is illegal. I am a conservative and a TEA PARTIER. The people I associate with are like minded and conservative and wish we could clean this government up and have hope for OUR CHILDREN. Let’s put this item on the ballot and let the people speak. Thank You
