Tossed for the Truth? ATF Fires ‘Project Gunrunner’ Whistleblower

The ATF Agent who has been loudly criticizing the “Project Gunrunner” scandal has received his walking papers, and he says its a clear case of government retaliation against a whistleblower.
Agent Vince Cefalu, who has worked for the ATF for 24 years, was effectively terminated last week, pending appeal while he is on paid administrative leave. Here he is on Fox Business:
Cefalu has been in the news recently due to his criticism of the so-called “Project Gunrunner” fiasco — also known as “Fast and Furious” — and even appeared on Fox News channel to critique the faulty operation. (We at the Blaze covered the controversy in an earlier post here).
Apparently Fox News has been in contact with Cefalu for months, reporting that:
Cefalu first told FoxNews.com about the ATF’s embattled anti-gun smuggling operation in December, before the first reports on the story appeared in February. “Simply put, we knowingly let hundreds of guns and dozens of identified bad guys go across the border,” Cefalu said at the time.
Since then, Cefalu’s claims have been vindicated, as a number of agents with first-hand knowledge of the case came forward. The scandal over Project Gunrunner led to congressional hearings, a presidential reprimand – Obama called the operation “a serious mistake” – and speculation that ATF chief Ken Melson will resign.
Fox News also makes the case that the ATF lately has made a habit of going after whistleblowers:
Cefalu’s dismissal follows a string of allegations that the ATF retaliates against whistleblowers. When the Project Gunrunner scandal broke, Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, wrote the ATF that an agent who had been giving his staff members information about the scandal had been “allegedly accused… of misconduct” by the agent’s boss for talking with Grassley’s staffers.
And two days before Cefalu was served with termination papers, Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, sent a letter to the ATF warning officials not to retaliate against whistleblowers.
The ATF is claiming Cefalu was fired because he leaked documents on a website, along with a string of other allegations of unprofessional conduct.
Agent Cefalu counters that explanation, pointing to good performance evaluations, 18 years without a disciplinary action and, of course, the politically convenient timing of his firing.
“I think it’s obvious why they’re doing this,” Cefalu said, ”it was my willingness to expose and support other people to come forward.”
Additional Note: This one year old video of Cefalu, reported on by CNN, shows him discussing how he is paid $150,000 a year to do nothing in response to his ATF criticisms.

Posted on June 28, 2011 at 12:01pmObama and Holder must be bigger idiots than I thought if they think the Mexican Drug Cartel gets their guns from the USA. They have unlimited money and they control large sections of Mexico. They can have International gun dealers fly cargo planes and sail cargo ships right into Mexico full of as many guns as they want at rock bottom prices. Why would they deal with U.S. governments restrictive gun purchasing regulations and then crossing the border with a car/truck load at a time? The prices of guns in the USA are 10 times higher than what they would get from Russian, Chinese, Middle Eastern arms dealers. Obama/Holder were only doing this so they could fabricate a USA to Mexico gun deal myth. Instead, they’ve put thousands of American lives at risk.

America was set up so that, class, ethnic background, (Check out Glenn’s research on the Black Founders.) Religion, or lack thereof; our nation was set up so that each had a chance at achieving their dreams, and when the need for security meant that slavery must temporarily be endured the founders both wrote about and set up a way to right the wrong! Posted on June 28, 2011 at 12:03pmWhistleblowing is always a fine-line. Where does “doing the right thing” stop and “having a chip on your shoulders” or “doing it for fame” begin? Comparing the efforts of say, Deep Throat in the Watergate scandal and Private Bradley Manning or Julian Assange of Wikileaks. One remained anonymous for years and years – the second had a chip on his shoulder – and the last did it for fame (and boy, how that backfired!).
It makes me wonder which case this was. I want to say it’s to do the right thing, but the fact that he’s having interviews now makes me think fame might have played into it. If he has a book deal come out in the next few years, I think that would clinche the “I did it for the money” theory.

The longer this gets dragged out and excuses flow from the regime (take note I will nolonger refer to them as the admin) the more obvious it is that this was part of a larger plan to go after the 2nd amendment. If they could have established a gun problem stemming from the US into Mexico there would be pressure to crack down on gun laws in the US. Could be worse…One of those guns could accidentily go off and shoot the whistle out of his head. The ATF needs to be defunded, along with the EPA, USDA and FDA…
Defund them and stop this nonsense!!

Posted on June 28, 2011 at 4:40pmCefalu – You can hold your head up proudly because your reputation and good name is intact. That is better than working for people who are constantly working against all things good and worthy. As for losing your job, it is open knowledge that people who live with dishonesty, lies and deception are totally unable to live in the face of truth especially when they see that truth in front of them daily, so be proud – you’ve earned it!

So those “whistleblower laws” that the left were so keen on for businesses . don’t apply to the GOVERNMENT???? Typical but WRONG!
——————————————————————————————
Oh no, they do apply. And from the sound of it he has a solid case for a class action suit. If he is sincere in his wanting to right this wrong then he should start contacting attorneys (there will likely be some who will do it pro-bono).

Posted on June 28, 2011 at 6:20pmRetaliation 100%, I served 16 years as a federal agent and when the Dept. of Homeland Security came out with a new policy INSTRUCTING us to violate civil rights, I filed formal charges against my agency with the U.S. Office of Special Counsel (Whistleblower Act). Two weeks later I was called into the office to discuss my “Mental Stability” and whether or not the agency needed to provide “Counselling”. (Hint, Hint…sit down, shut up or we will find you unfit for duty and fire you). I resigned last year.

Posted on June 28, 2011 at 7:07pmSwampy, I’m not exactly sure what revenge your thinking of, but I agree. What I’m talking about, not so much with ‘Deep Throat’, but with Woodward and Burnstein of the Washington Compost, was revenge for Nixon’s prosecution of commie Alger Hiss. I remember when I was in HS, not much interested in politics, I couldn’t help but notice how media types had such animosity for VP Nixon and admonished him for being an anti-communist. That’s what really puzzled me. Wasn’t til years later, when I became engaged in the Culture War, and began doing research that I learned where that animosity came from. The left hated NIxon long before Watergate ever happened. Watergate/Woodward & Burnstein was just the payback.

Posted on June 28, 2011 at 8:30pmJust as was predicted. Government has ‘whistle blower’ protections in place, but they NEVER hold up. Government is spiteful and demands you play their game. Like it or not, right or wrong.

Posted on June 29, 2011 at 8:52amThe BATF has been corrupt ever since its inception. Their plan this time was to confiscate the guns at some point after they reached cartel hands, pretending that cartel weapons come directly from the US, so, therefore, guns must be banned in this country for the sake of preventing the drug gangs from acquiring so much power they become a direct threat to the US. A matter of national security, you see?
Well, just like Waco, this debacle blew up in their faces. Too bad for Holder, because I’m pretty sure he was the moron behind the plan. You see if he takes away whitey’s guns, then “his people” won’t have to worry about being annihilated at some breaking point where they mob and decimate an entire white family.
