‘Touched by an Angel’ Actor Found Dead in Home

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Actor John Dye, whose career included the role of Andrew, the angel of death, in the long-running television series “Touched by an Angel,” was found dead at his San Francisco home, a medical examiner’s spokesman said Thursday.

Medical examiner’s investigator Charles Cecil said the 47-year-old Dye, a native of Amory, Miss., was found dead Monday.

The cause of death has not been determined, Cecil said, but relatives said Dye suffered apparent heart failure.

WREG-TV in Memphis reported that Dye’s father, Jim Dye, said his actor son “was very giving, had a lot of causes that he supported real well, Make a Wish Foundation, AIDS research.”

The Cleveland Daily Banner reported Thursday that while living in the community as a youngster, Dye was involved in a children’s theater group and in the 1990s helped re-establish it.

As news of Dye’s death began to spread Thursday afternoon, his “Touched by an Angel” co-star Valerie Bertinelli posted a message to him on her Twitter account: “Dear, sweet John Dye, rest in peace.”

A University of Memphis theater major, Dye’s early work included the martial-arts movie “The Best of the Best” and small roles on “Murder, She Wrote” and other television shows. He landed the part of the Angel of Death on “Touched by an Angel” in 1994 and appeared in all nine seasons of the CBS series.

A spokeswoman for E.E. Pickle Funeral Home in Amory said funeral arrangements were incomplete.

Snarky Comment Ahead: He played the Angel of Death. When he met the angel sent to take him to his home, did he just go, “No thank you, I think I know the way by heart now. Don’t wait up.”

I certainly agree. AIDs was one of his endeavors? I had read sometime ago he was one of the Frisco-boys and he was not in tune with the show about angels if he was. I place it all on acting and not the perceived Christianity of the show. Della has beliefs that I do not agree with but anything goes when it comes to acting and pushing an agenda that the out of touch acting world so often uses.

It was a decent show but not at all Christian, just a feel good act for liberalism or just another Hollywood type of Liberal propaganda. Folks should not go by feelings but by the word of God.

Movies and TV are almost solely used for socialist indoctrination like Archie Bunker and a hundred more like it. CSI, Law and Order, the one about sex crimes are all filled with propaganda mixed into the script.

This page is being used to glorify his life style not his acting IMO

I was so sad to hear that John Dye had passed. He was so young! He was a great actor and I loved “Touched My An Angel”. I loved that it was on Sundays for most of it’s run. It seemed like a good ending to your day. I remember when they first introduced his character, “The Angel of Death”, and it was a bit darker, but when they made it a regular character, they had him be kind, giving, and also quite funny!
He will be missed by so many and I hope and pray this family may have peace and love at this difficult time.

@Maulemall – I just have to let you know, that I pray for ALL those who serve now, those retired and especially those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our Country and our freedoms EVERY DAY. I believe in my heart that there are a huge number of Americans who do. They may not be mentioned everyday in the media but they are thought of alls by those who matter — the AMERICAN CITIZENS! I respectfully ask that you please let this kind soul have his life be recognized since his death was so quiet!

Good point…Maulemall meant no harm though…but you are right…I really enjoyed his acting…Just from his portrayal of “Andrew”, you knew who he was…I still catch the re-runs from time to time when they are on the Hallmark Channel…wish they were ongoing…my son loves it as well!

How many people can you look at from Hollywood and have nothing but good thoughts for? Very few.

This guy was one of them. There are no bad associations or thoughts.

I pray for him and his family at this time.

I pray that this kind soul has a peaceful eternity with God. I know it was a role that he was playing as Andrew, the Angel of Death – I pray that he had an angel like that with him. That show touched my heart in a very special way and I wish it was still on – we need shows like that on television now, not The Simpsons, The Family Guy, Jersey Shore, etc. Rest in peace and enjoy Heaven, John Dye!

Re: MAULEMALL; Seems like the media doesn’t care too much, but a crazy man shoots some people in government and the whole world is put on hold! I’m not minimizing the shootings in Tucson last Saturday by any means, but there aren’t too many stories on the casualties in Afghanistan as compared to other things the media covers; one mention and that is it most(not all) of the time. I personally think it’s time to cut our losses and get the hell out of there and let them fight it out for themselves. $$$ and opium talk over there, that is their “cash crop”, and whoever controls that controls the country. Burn up their “crop” and see how Karzai and his drug buddies react!!!
