Town Council Tells UK Grandmother — Your Weeds Are Too Dirty for Trash Collection

After giving her garden a good spring clean with the help of her grandson, Kay McIntyre dutifully tossed the uprooted weeds into the green waste bin.
But the 74-year-old was amazed when binmen refused to collect it – because they claimed the plants had too much mud stuck to their roots.
When she complained, Mrs McIntyre did not receive an apology but was instead visited by a ‘community recycling officer’, who was sent to sift through her wheelie-bin and examine just how dirty its contents were.
Kay said she was ‘staggered’ at the fuss over whether her weeds were too dirty.
And furious son Andy, who lives on the same street, said: “It’s the lunatics in charge of the asylum. Are we going to be asked to wash our weeds next?
“This is council taxpayer’s money. That’s why councils are in the mess they are in. There’s someone sitting there thinking of parameters for weeds and soil. It’s utter madness.”

Posted on April 24, 2011 at 4:50pmDifferent areas here in the States have different rules. Some neighborhoods have 2 pick-up’s a week for regular garbage, and 1 a week for leaves, grass,etc. Some will leave your garbage in the bin if they notice you mixed the garbage with the leaves.
Some have 2 pick-up’s a week period, so even if you mix the garbage bags with leaves, they will still empty the bin.
Not sure from this article exactly what the rules were.

Maybe, if the city didn’t take over garbage/waste disposal, Grandma wouldn’t have to worry about having too much dirt on her weeds. After all, she’d be paying to private companies for her bin, and could change the weed to dirt ratio to anything she wants.

But perhaps there is another way to see this, particularly if you take a minute to read the whole Daily Mail article, and not the nugget that The Blaze feeds you:
This woman was using a public service (how entitled!). Because of the way the waste is processed, residents are prohibited from putting soil in the bins (says so clearly on the lids). The garbagemen are trained to determine whether there is too much soil in the bins, and they made the call. Long-story-short, this woman was using a public service but not following the rules.
