Wow — Japanese Highway Crash Claims 8 Ferraris, 3 Mercedes and a Lamborghini

Ferraris and Mercedes Trashed in Japanese Megacrash | Chugoku Expressway

It’s been called the “world’s most expensive car crash.” Auto fans across the world are demanding answers to what caused a pile-up on stretch of Japanese highway that laid waste to a small fortune of luxury automobiles — maybe $4 million worth.

A Japanese newscast showed the aftermath of the wreck that claimed 14 vehicles in all, including 8 ferraris, 3 Mercedes, a Lamborghini, a Skyline, and a Prius that no one cares about:

Jalopnik reports that a group of foreign car enthusiasts were heading to Hiroshima from Kyushu when one of the drivers lost control trying to overtake a car on a wet, curved part of China Road in Yamaguchi Prefecture. The Ferrari driver reportedly hit the median and created a reaction that caused the other cars in the lineup to crash.

According to the Telegraph, the massive crash took place Sunday on the Chugoku Expressway, in southwest Japan. No one suffered serious injuries, and the accident shut down the road for six hours as cleanup crews tried to untangle the mess.

      Most of them ferraris (8 crashed there) are sold in red, it’s a default color. You can get also dark red (still red), then black, blue (2 hues), yellow and white, but chicks usually ask if it is a fake. So, you can’t err with red.

      why are there so many of those overly expensive cars on one highway at the same time that close to eachother? it seems statistically impossible unless everyone in that nation is just filthy stinking rich… which is probably where all of our money goes…

      Nice catch. Road is dry as a bone, even under the cars (video).

      Maybe the translation was garbled… should have been “8 ferrari drivers wet their pants after reckless driving caused them to crash.”

      Kibsey – you seem a bit slow here. Is this an aberration or business as normal for ya?

      1. It wasn’t a car show. READ. It was a group of foreign car enthusiasts traveling TO a meet.

      2. They are red because 80%+ of all Ferrari’s are sold in the traditional “Ferrari Rossa”. Google can help here.

      3. You seem to suspect the cars crashed ‘on wet pavement’ because the cars, not the drivers, are ill equipped to handle wet pavement. Where on earth did you grasp that one out of?

      4. You seem to find it “odd” (your word) the pavement was dry at the time the photo was taken … apparently in an out-of-ash extrapolation that ‘dry now means dry then’ (at the time of the accident). Are you aware that weather changes, precipitation comes and then goes, Global Warming becomes a fad and then fades, and in fact that even your waistline changes and is not immutable?

      Cheers!

      Italian Sports cars are traditionally red since that’s the racing color of Italy.
      German = white … and silver or “raw”
      British = “British Racing” Green
      USA = Blue with White Stripes or vice versa
      France = Blue … etc.
      Interesting Egypt is pale violet … kinda cool;-)

      Years ago, all countries had international racing colours. Red was Italy, Green was Britain, USA was white with blue stripes running lengthwise, hood to trunk, Germany was white, then silver. This gave way in the 1960-70′s as corporate sponsors came on board. So red Ferraris are a traditional racing color going back to the birth of auto racing. You can clique on international auto racing colourss for the updated color schemes.

      Red is or was the International racing color of Italy, England was green, USA white with 2 blue stripes, Germany white then silver. Since 1960 ish corporate sponsors messed that up. You can search international auto racing colours.

    Duh, they weren’t racing. They were driving responsibly when one of the cars was making a legal and safe pass, the communist, Red China, wet road surface reached up and swatted all of the cars off the road. Yep, that’s what must have happened. Duh, nope, no road racing was happening here. The car “enthusiasts” appreciated these high-end performance machines solely for their fine craftsmanship. No danger at all when a bunch of them start out for a nice Sunday drive in the country.

      Ferraris are assembled with a high level of scrutiny, including the engine block, which is checked by x-ray after casting, then melted down and recast
      No two cars are really alike and most parts are not quickly interchangeable
      Putting one back together is difficult and the vehicle quality may be the same level as the factory quality depending on the builders in a topnotch frame off restore
      Doubt any of these owners will opt for a rebuild though
      Most Ferrari owners feel more comfortable with factory virgins
