Former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Margaret Thatcher earned the nickname of the “Iron Lady” for her scathing verbal attacks on Soviet ambition, and strong opposition to the will of powerful unions. A new biopic starring Meryl Streep, entitled after Thatcher’s nickname, looks to potray the Baroness’ legacy, for better or worse, on the silver screen:
During the film’s production this past February, The Guardian’s Stuart Jeffries noted that the film will focus “on a helpfully self-containable narrative moment in order to provide a condensed character sketch of the eponymous (anti)hero.” Jeffries also expressed some resentment for the role being slotted to an American.
Thatcher’s children were said to be “horrified” about the film last Summer, after learning that the script depicted the Baroness “as an elderly dementia-sufferer looking back on her career with sadness.” A friend of the family told the Telegraph in July 2010 that Thatcher’s children “ think it sounds like some Left-wing fantasy. They feel strongly about it, but will not speak publicly for fear of giving it more publicity.”
However, the Daily Mail’s Baz Bamigboye notes that the film does not live up to what was “commonly agreed that our greatest Prime Minister since Churchill would be vilified.“ Bamigboye writes that after seeing the film in a London preview before its UK release in January ”The screen Thatcher talks of the tough decisions she had to make for which she would be hated but perhaps understood years later.”
The self-admitted liberal Streep told Bamigboye:
“I still don’t agree with a lot of her policies, but I feel she believed in them and that they came from an honest conviction, and that she wasn’t a cosmetic politician just changing make-up to suit the times. She stuck to what she believed in, and that’s a hard thing to do.”
The Telegraph’s Cristina Odone also writes that the film did not live up to fears that “the Baroness would be played as a cruel capitalist who waged war against the salt of the earth miners of the type featured in Billy Elliot.” Odone writes:
“Today’s politicians should draw inspiration from this portrait of a leader with guts who transformed a country struggling with a deep economic crisis, angry protests, and autocratic unions.”
The Iron Lady is set for a December 30, 2011 release in the United States.

Posted on November 17, 2011 at 9:05pmSorry, but I won’t be seeing the movie. As long as Meryl Streep is involved, I won‘t be a able to believe that she didn’t take some ‘creative license’, erasing the history she disagrees with…which is what liberals do best.
Report Post »For decades, the American public has constantly warned the ‘elite’ Hollywood set that their very vocal political beliefs were of no interest to us, and that it was going to destroy their ability to continue to gain wealth off of the backs of those of us they spend their time talking down to.
Welcome to your new reality, Ms. Streep. You were a great actress once. Now, you are just another dime-a dozen political diva. If you said the sun would rise in the morning, I’d go out and check. I will never again take your word on anything.

Posted on November 16, 2011 at 10:10amLooks kinda similar to the kings speech formula, but looks like a great movie, anyway.
Thatcher was brilliant. Loved what she did with supply side economics, and along with Reagan they both created an era of hope and prosperity for the millions they served. I think it is clear right now that neither Obama or Cameron will be held in such high esteem as the supply-side pair. Thatcher and Reagan were more in-depth intellectually, while still having effective communication skills.

Posted on November 16, 2011 at 10:20amI’ve got a revolutionary idea for you:
Nobody smart is communist anymore. Not even hollywood or Obama.
They believe in syndicalism, a neo-anarchist (that doesn’t mean free-market anarchist) society based upon community rule and trade union economics to replace capitalism. True enough this would set us back a great deal in social and technological process, but they are so deeply based in this ideal to end poverty and promote “community” values. They don’t believe in a Marxist-Leninist uber-censorship, top down approach with Stalin-like national borders. They want this to become a libertarian socialist (not an oxy-moron) international society without capitalism.
Communism failed, so they decided to go back to some basic ideas the hippies were into in the ’60s.
True enough, hollywood does some bad stuff, BUT, lots of people do bad stuff. Don’t give into this ridiculous magic bullet theory of media that says people are stupid and can be controlled instantaneously. Don’t be so concerned about what adults do/don’t do morally. They are free individuals, and can answer to a higher authority after death.
Report Post »I don’t ever blame hollywood for putting out bad stuff. They can do whatever the hell they want. I blame parents for not cracking down on stuff they don’t want their kids watching.

Posted on November 15, 2011 at 11:27amHow many historical events has Hollywould (yep yep) ruined with their perspective-based movies? Jarhead pi$$ed me off big time. Hollywood’s depiction of marines and saying our war is meaningless and all our troops suffer depression or apathy. No one knows except people who served on the USS Lincoln that Jamie Foxx is a d!ck. Told us that he couldn‘t wait to get back to his house because he couldn’t believe “people like us” could live in such a way (a way, meaning our coffin lockers and sardine can-of-a-berthing…..meanwhile this guy got one of our high-ranking officer suites…what a wuss). All this said when he was signing autographs after using the ship as a stage for that crappy film Stealth. The CLOSEST movies ever coming to the truth would be Black Hawk Down, Glory, We Were Soldiers, and Patton (I‘m not listing ’em all, I just posted ones from different war times). BLACK HAWK DOWN, by the way, mainly BRITISH ACTORS playing Americans, including the lovely Jason Isaacs. And it was a good movie. Personally, I’ll watch Glory and Patton again (naturally) because most of the actors in those movies are/were VERY patriotic…especially Denzel Washington. I suggest that if anyone wants to watch any movie, it should be with Denzel, since he donated 2 million dollars to military charity for a wounded warriors housing thing (I forgot the name…my bad). Oh. And anything with Gary Sinise…but you smart peeps knew that.

Posted on November 15, 2011 at 8:41amI thought overrated Meryl Streep had done us a favor and finally disappeared. I don‘t blame Thatcher’s children for being horrified by this. I assume they were never even notified about it until it was finished. This will end up on DVD about a week after it’s released. So what if she is played by an American? Famous Americans are almost constantly played by Brits.

‘That bust was not his to return. It was given to US, not to him.’
******************
That is just not true:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/barackobama/4623148/Barack-Obama-sends-bust-of-Winston-Churchill-on-its-way-back-to-Britain.html
‘A British Embassy spokesman said: “The bust of Sir Winston Churchill by Sir Jacob Epstein was uniquely lent to a foreign head of state, President George W Bush, from the Government Art Collection in the wake of 9/11 as a signal of the strong transatlantic relationship.
“It was lent for the first term of office of President Bush. When the President was elected for his second and final term, the loan was extended until January 2009. The new President has decided not to continue this loan and the bust has now been returned. It is on display at the Ambassador’s Residence.”
For the record, not everyone loves Winston Churchill (I do). The Irish detest him.

Margaret Thatcher was cast in the same mold, made of the same stuff. It was in her genes.
Consider that the small leftist man now occupying the White House saw fit to return to our staunchest ally the bust of Churchill which they had sent to us as gift.
I fear that we will soon stand alone in the world, with nothing but a weak, whining, emasculated populace to rely upon.
