The mother of Trayvon Martin has clarified remarks that her son’s shooting death was an “accident,” saying she meant Martin’s encounter with George Zimmerman, not Zimmerman shooting him.

“I believe it was an accident. I believe that it just got out of control and he couldn’t turn the clock back,” Sybrina Fulton said Thursday on NBC’s “Today.”

The comment immediately drew widespread attention, prompting Fulton to release a statement to NBC saying her remark had been “mischaracterized” and that she believes “George Zimmerman stalked my son and murdered him in cold blood.”

“The ‘accident’ I was referring to was the fact that George Zimmerman and my son ever crossed paths,” Fulton said. “It was an accidental encounter. If George Zimmerman hadn’t gotten out of his vehicle, this entire incident would have been avoided.”

Zimmerman was charged Wednesday with second-degree murder in the unarmed Florida teen’s death. Zimmerman has maintained he shot Martin in self-defense.

Fulton’s full statement is below:

Earlier today, I made a comment to the media that was later mischaracterized.  When I referenced the word ‘accident’ today with regard to Trayvon’s death, in NO way did I mean the shooting was an accident.

We believe that George Zimmerman stalked my son and murdered him in cold blood.  The ‘accident’ I was referring to was the fact that George Zimmerman and my son ever crossed paths.  It was an accidental encounter. If George Zimmerman hadn’t gotten out of his vehicle, this entire incident would have been avoided.

My son was profiled, followed and murdered by George Zimmerman, and there was nothing accidental about that.

      regarding “if George Zimmerman hadn’t gotten out of his vehicle, this incident wouldn’t have happened”… If Trayvon had not been walking through a gated community, apparently suspicious, and supposedly stumbling around as if he were drunk, this incident would’t have happened.
      Although this community watchman may have protected someones home from being robbed, what is worse is the rush to judgement made by so many that were not there.
      Either way, this has resulted with a very sad and unfortunate outcome.

    I don’t think that Zimmerman will even get a fair trial. How many times have people had mistrials due to jurors, and outside influence. I think he should go for mistrial, due to the reasons of outside influence and a jury that hasn’t already made their minds up due to the media and the saga that has been going on.

    I am tired of street blacks changing what the law has decided at the scene because the victim was black. I am tired of chicken politicians who let them. This idea that whites cannot defend themselves if their attacker is black has got to stop. We are not permanent victims who are always at the whim of a black attacker. This ‘special prosecutor’ is biased and the governor of Florida should be voted out of office for bending to the will of black radicals and throwing a man to the dogs who was scared for his life and defended it.       But I think that part is right. He should have left it to the police. And he went around with a gun. I am as fond of guns as the next 2nd amendment loving American, but you put yourself in a really bad position when you are carrying it while on “neighborhood watch” and following someone. If he would have stayed in his car then none of this would have happened. The police would have come and questioned the kid or he would have gotten home and everything would be fine. It sounds like the kid overreacted to someone following him either out of the mentality that if someone is following you that they mean you harm (which I can understand having grown up in a tougher neighborhood) or out of “I am a gangsta so I will give you a beat down”. Maybe neither, but these seem likely to me. Either way he didn’t shoot him till he was on top of him beating him to a pulp. If he wanted to shoot him just for being black he could have done that before he got his head and face rearranged.

      It’s this insatiable love of guns and idolization of the second amendent that killed Travon Martin. Zimmermen was no racist, he was just a regular 28YO guy out on gaurd at the gated community with a loaded gun looking out for trouble. What could possibly go wrong?
      I know you think they’re keeping you safe, but peaking in from beyond your borders up here in Canerder it sure looks obvious that this tragedy was just one more forgone conclusion based in your inexplicable need to arm yourselves.
      I don’t know, but I don’t think any other western country could imagine arming their men and women to go out at night to protect their neighborhoods. Maybe I’m just a goofy Canadian, but when I think of freedom it doesn’t include standing armed gaurd. That kind of takes away some of the romance. Writing laws to increase the saturation and variety of guns and decrease the personal responsibility associated with using them just seems like questionable logic. As I said, could just be me.
      Oh yea, I REALLY like that “God given right to bear arms”. Cracks me up

    The thing that gets me is that people want safe community so here is a guy actively trying to protect is community. See something suspicious so he checks it out. How do people think your going to protect your community! I think that would be great questions to ask these people and others? How do you do it.

    Because 90% of the time police are there after the crime happens to fill out reports an investigate. No slam on police because they have their hands full. These people want safe communities but don’t have a clue how that is done.

    Really ****** me off when ******** are using the 911 tape where the dispatcher asks are you following him, then replies oh we don’t need you to do that. That is there response always. 40 years ago it would have been different, they would have said yes, stay back and follow him, until the police get there, but people have gotten injured, and 911 operators sued. Now, you could have someone raping a 3 year old child, and 911 would say wait till the cops go there. It has gotten so bad, that you can have a drowning victim, 911 asks if you have training in mouth to mouth, and if you say no, they advise you not to try to do mouth to mouth, they just tell you to roll them on their side, basically letting the person die to prevent the risk of being sued. This is their only evidence they have on this guy, he was a vigilante, and disobeyed an order from the 911 operator, give me a break.

      I think Zimmerman saw the hate in Trayvon’s eyes as they fought over Zimmermans gun.

      It is funny that Trayvon’s parents or Jackson or Sharpton or the Black Panthers or 90% of the media mention nothing of Trayvon walking in between the houses on the street!       Were his eyes innocent as he attacked Zimmerman? There’s evidence that shows a scuffle. A man with a conceal carry isn’t going to jump anyone because he knows in hand to hand combat, his gun is as easily accessible to the other guy. Anyone with a gun keeps their distance so they have time to draw and fire. If that distance was compromised, which evidence and eye witness has shown, Martin is no longer an innocent, wide eyed, unarmed kid. He had nearly as much access to Zimmerman’s gun as Zimmerman had.

      Zimmerman had his gun holstered, I almost guarantee it. Martin would have screamed like a little girl and ran home to daddy had he seen a gun in Zimmerman’s hand. He was a wanna be thug because it seems cool when you’re 17. He wasn’t a thug but thought he could push Zimmerman around. He pushed around the wrong hispanic.

      My question is, with the left crucifying him automatically, will Zimmerman change his party affiliation? Hahaha.
