Treasury Sec. Geithner: We Need to Raise Taxes on Small Businesses Because It‘s ’Fair’

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner admitted on Wednesday that the administration’s budget plan will, in fact, raise taxes on small businesses. However, it‘s a move he said is necessary and justified because revenues must increase in a way that’s “fair to people as a whole.”

Geithner’s testimony came after he was confronted by Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) on the administration’s proposal to raise taxes on those earning above $250,000. Many small business owners file taxes the same way individuals do, giving the appearance that they are bringing in higher earnings.

“Looking into the future, you are supporting the idea of taxation, increasing taxes on those who make $250,000 or more. Those are our business owners,” Ellmers said. Geithner responded that it would only affect “three percent of your small businesses.”

When pressed further by Ellmers, Geithner revealed that the motivation behind the increase is based on fairness.

“But just to put it in perspective, it’s important to recognize why are we doing this,” he explained. “You know, our deficits are 10 percent of GDP, higher than they’ve been since any time in the postwar period really. We have a big hole to dig out of, and we have to figure out how to do that in a way that’s balanced, good for growth, fair to people as a whole.”

Watch the exchange below via CNS News:

“We’re not doing it because we want to do it, we’re doing it because we see no alternative to a balanced approach to reduce our fiscal deficits,” Geithner said later.

But that’s not entirely true. Geithner and the administration to have an alternative. Congressional Republicans are proposing an alternative to tax hikes that would cut about $2 trillion in spending over 10 years.

“Sadly, the Democrats’ response has been a mystifying call for more stimulus spending and huge tax hikes on American job creators. That’s not serious, and it is my hope that the president will take those off the table on Monday so that we can have a serious discussion about our country’s economic future,” Senate Minority Mitch McConnell said today.

I am a small business owner (two people) and this man is NUTS! Since 2008 I’ve lost my A–!
I’m struggling to put food on the table, pay high gas prices, and haven’t been able to make a bit of money since 2008! Sales suck because folks are scared to spend money. They’ve laid off 85% of their employees, and this idiot thinks he needs to raise taxes on us? What a nin-ca-poop, and I’m being nice. Someone needs to spread the word to Mr. Geithner that he’s barking up the wrong three. Obama has been trying to kill small business, and if Geithner goes forth on this, you just as well start digging graves for us. Many of my fellow business owners have already gone belly up and I’ve worked my butt off since 2004 building my business and keeping my customers happy. We cannot allow liberals to do this to us. Never!!!!!!! Obama needs to stop spending money like it’s growing on trees. He needs to stay the heck out of Air Force One, He needs to stop taking vacations on our dime, he needs to stop giving Pakistan, and Afghanistan MONEY! If we had all the monies he and Hillary have given to foreign countries we wouldn’t be in this debt. I think everyone that is working under Obama or in the Senate must be illiterate, or just plain ignorant, and yes Barney Frank, that includes you, Pelosi, Clinton, Reed, Gates, and Geighner. I am not even certain Bernake has all his marbles after the last announcement he made. He really must think American’s are stupid.

Running a business in America is too hard anymore. I had to down size my business because of the long arm of government. Too many regulations and taxed way too much. Being in business isn’t all that desirable to me to me anymore, but at least I don’t have to rely on anyone, like government, to find work for me. IT’S ALL UP TO ME! That’s the way I like it.

The fair thing would have been if he had never gotten this office and was kicked out now. STOP THE SPENDING STUPID! Then maybe we wouldn’t need anymore tax increases. He is the biggest fake ever. To think that 3% (as he cailms) of the small businesses will help reduce the budget shortfall is BS. Geitner is just a pawn for the elite that are trying to destroy middle class and enslave us. He has the double talk down to a science. It’s not that we want to do it we have no other choice. If 3% of 16 trillion (our total cash revenue) is 480 billion $ even if they tax it at 10% thats 48 billion $ what will that do for a 1.6 tillion $ shortfall. It’s a spit in the ocean.

That is how democrats get elected. They create an environment of fear in the poorest citziens and then enslave them to welfare.

In order to pay for the enslavement of the poor, they tax the productive citizens to death, therby causing productive businesses to either lay off or terminate workers or move the business overseas. This serves to broaden the welfare receiptants base making more people dependant on the system by using fear, ccoerce them to vote democrat.

Change Washington from the top down! Remove all the communists and czars and return government to sensible people who care about America.

To offer of one’s own stuff and give to another is charity. Americans are THE most charitable folks on the planet.

There is a special place in hell for Geitner and his cronies; it will be right next door to Obama and his cronies. Quit strangling small businesses! And Geitner and Obama need to get on the same page, or did Geitner wait until after Obama’s NC speech to drop this bombshell (excuse the hostile rhetoric).

The_Bees_Assume, it seems my information has become dated. Their articles from the Spring after his election don’t appear to be there anymore. No doubt they realized it was becoming a liability to him, or even they are changing their mind.

This article, among many other, proves how inept this administration has been. They’re running a deficit of $1.5T per year and they want more money from job creators? I say we take a chainsaw to the more than $3T per year budget.

How is it “fair” when GE and ther Obama cronies pay NOTHING, while they dream up new ways to tax the few people who are actually creating jobs? More “wealth redistribution” BS and ful steam ahead with the plan to destroy this country.

I hope NOW people understand why we Conservatives simply CANNOT go off in all directions following this candidate or that. The liberals won’t be donig that–they’re all deadly focused on re-electing the current TRAITOR so he can finish the job of destroying our country.

In order to prevent this, we are gong to have to get behind ONE candidate and make sure that candidate has the funding to go the distance, because you can be sure the biased media and the entire liberal establishment will be working to make sure our candidate gets no attention and no platform from which to speak.

We simply cannot afford to let minor disagreements in policy derail our entire movement. There IS no perfect candidate. Get used to it. Pick the one that best embodies our ideals and back him or her to the hilt, then VOTE AS A BLOC in November–that is the ONLY way to defeat the Odumber crowd.

So let’s quit defeating ourselves and start working SMART to get this done!

Enough with the taxing! We’re not here to get you out of your messes! And in case you don’t realize this… It NEVER works! Once taxes are raised, they NEVER go back down… EVER!!! So it’s certainly not necessary, not for small business, especially after they will be forced into buying Obummer Care too!
I say; Cut the perks, ridiculous benefits and pensions and raise only the taxes of our Government and Billionaires! (Especially Soros!!!) (Of course, only after removing any and all loopholes that you and the deceitfully filthy rich use!) Why… We’d make AND save hundreds of millions right there!

Every person should pay taxes for the privilege of being an American.

What the hell gives with Democrats? Are they born with this sickness or is it something that grows over time? I liken it to retardation. What’s so hard for them to understand that when you have no money, you should do like we have to do…. stop spending. As each day goes by and the Dems continue this push for more taxes and more spending, the Democrat Party tries to force this country to its knees and bring on a complete and total collapse. They must be doing this on purpose, cause NOBODY is this stupid to continue with policies like theirs.

Obama’s plan all along, and geithner is just a lapdog, so this is no surprise.

      FAIR?
      I call “BULL CRAP”
Is it FAIR for HALF of the country not to pay ANY income taxes while the rest of the country carries them?

MAKER or TAKER – WHICH ONE ARE YOU?

Every public employee, by definition, is a TAKER.
Every government contractor, to the degree they are funded by the government, is, to that degree, a TAKER.

How many people does that leave who actually PRODUCE a good or service?

Government is not a “participant” in the econcomy – it is a LEECH on the economy – it only profits when the economy id doing well all by itsself. When government steps in, it slows down the economy, reducing its own share of the economy.

Instead of allowing us to get it restarted, they want to TAKE a bigger share!
LET US GROW THE PIE, and you will get more pie!
Taking more slices will just starve us so we can’t work to grow more pie!

And then there is the matter of government COMPETING with private industry. Given a finite consumer base, and a mature market, one must suffer for the other to succeed. This is what is wrong with the USPS and with govt healthcare – for the govt to do well, FedEx/UPS and private insurers must lose market share.
      THIS IS WRONG!

Get the hell out of our way, and we will fix the economy! After all, we ARE the economy! WE BUILD the economy! WE ARE THE MAKERS!

The TAKERS are telling the makers how to MAKE!
We don’t let our kids tell us how to earn money or how to invest it.
      We support THEM!
WE decide how to earn a living.
WE decide how much to GIVE to them.

Our dependents shouldn’t be in a position to “ALLOW” us to keep some of our own money!
We should always determine how much THEY get for an allowance.
Instead, they decide how many new ipads, new xbox’es and iTunes they want to buy, then they TAKE it!

We need a Constitutionally constrained government!
      We need campaign finance reform.
      We need to eliminate PACs.
      We need term limits.

WE NEED HONEST MEN AND WOMEN!

Promise to save economy, then spend trillions. Complain about excess of debt, then raise taxes. Promise to save economy, then spend trillions. Complain about excess of debt, then raise taxes. It sounds like two conflicting arguments, but how do these same arguments come from the same individuals. Two many fires to fight from too many fronts. We to make some changes in our government quickly.

To the people who say %50 don’t pay taxes and the people who say “Flat tax is fair clearly have minimal grasp on how this country works. EVERY American Citizen pays his “share” by consumption.

ONLY “unearned income” is subject to the “income tax” and very few American Citizens have any. It is the utter benighted ignorance of the People that allow this patently absurd claim to stand.

If the government truly wants to be fair, they should tax those of us who are on the lower income levels who pay virtually no taxes whatever for the services and benefits we receive. In fact, we receive money at the end of the year while others are taxed even more. We should mutually bear the burden. And we should eliminate benefits to non citizens. There isn’t another country in the world that pays for the healthcare, education, housing, food, etc. of non citizens—legal or illegal. My husband, who hasn’t been able to get a permanent job in more than three years, as well as other unemployed citizens, can’t even qualify for comparable assistance. Is that fair, Mr. Geithner?

Oh it’s fair, all right. In their world, there should not be any small businesses. Just the big businesses and unions that they control. Anyone who doesn’t play the game gets sued or regulated into submission (Delta, Boeing). They know exactly what they are doing. It’s disgusting.
