‘Trespassers’: Occupy Wall St. Protesters Begin Taking Over Foreclosed Homes

Occupy Movement Turns to Foreclosed Homes

SEATTLE (The Blaze/AP) — The Occupy Wall Street protests are moving into the neighborhood. Finding it increasingly difficult to camp in public spaces, Occupy protesters across the country are reclaiming foreclosed homes and boarded-up properties, signaling a tactical shift for the movement against wealth inequality.

Groups in more than 25 cities held protests Tuesday on behalf of homeowners facing evictions.

In Atlanta, protesters held a boisterous rally at a county courthouse and used whistles and sirens to disrupt an auction of seized houses. In New York, they marched through a residential neighborhood in Brooklyn carrying signs that read “Foreclose on banks, not people.” Southern California protesters rallied around a family of six that reclaimed the home they lost six months ago in foreclosure.

See the Brooklyn march, below:

“It’s pretty clear that the fight is against the banks, and the Occupy movement is about occupying spaces. So occupying a space that should belong to homeowners but belongs to the banks seems like the logical next step for the Occupy movement,” said Jeff Ordower, one of the organizers of Occupy Homes.

The events reflect the protesters‘ lingering frustration over the housing crisis that has sent millions of homes into foreclosure after the burst of the housing bubble that helped cripple the country’s economy. Nearly a quarter of all U.S. homeowners with mortgages are now underwater, representing nearly 11 million homes, according to CoreLogic, a real estate research firm.

Protesters say that banks and financial firms own abandoned foreclosed houses that could be housing people.

Seattle has become a leader in the anti-foreclosure movement as protesters took over a formerly boarded-up duplex last month. They painted the bare wood sidings with green, black and red paint, and strung up a banner that says “Occupy Everything – No Banks No Landlords.”

While arrests have already been made in a couple of squatting cases in Seattle and Portland, it remains to be seen how authorities will react to this latest tactic.

In Portland, police spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson said he’s aware that the movement called for people to occupy foreclosed homes, but said it’s difficult to distinguish between the people who would squat in homes as a political statement and those that do it for shelter.

“The vacant property issue is of concern in cities nationwide,” Simpson said. “We’ll treat them all as trespassers.”

In Seattle, protesters took over a boarded-up warehouse slated for demolition last weekend. In an announcement, the protesters said they planned to make the warehouse into a community center, and hosted a party the night they opened the building. Police moved in soon after, arresting 16 people in the process of clearing it out.

Seattle police spokesman Sgt. Sean Whitcomb said his department sees squatting in private properties as the same violation of trespassing Occupy Seattle made when it camped in a downtown park.

“It’s no different than when people were trespassing (in the park),” Whitcomb said. “We went nights and days, letting people camp in the park. We relied on education and outreach, rather than enforcing the law to the letter.”

Atlanta protesters took a more aggressive approach in trying to disrupt the home auction. The auction went on but the whistles and sirens made it difficult for the auctioneers to communicate, said Occupy Atlanta spokesman Tim Franzen.

“We don’t know how many homes we saved for one more month during the holiday season,” he said. “It was kind of a Christmas gift to the people.”

In Riverside, Calif., Art de los Santos arrived in a U-Haul with assorted furniture and about three dozen supporters at his former three-bedroom, three bathroom home. He broke the lock and moved back in.

Reclaiming his old home is his last resort to get the attention of bank JP Morgan Chase after he applied three times for a loan modification to no avail.

“I’m getting down to my last option,” he said. “Nothing seems to work. Maybe if I protest, it’ll get their attention.”

The home, which was foreclosed on, is sitting empty while he, his wife and four children, aged 11 to 7, are squeezed into an Orange County rental apartment. He’s also renting a storage unit.

“It’s sad because you have all these memories there,” said the 46-year-old. “My kids were running around the neighborhood on their bikes. It’s a nice little community.”

Occupy Movement Turns to Foreclosed Homes

Tom Kelly, spokesman for JPMorganChase, had no immediate knowledge of de los Santos’ case and could not comment, but noted that he is trespassing.

New York protesters introduced members of a homeless family at the end of their rally and said they plan renovate and clean up the house so the family can live in a house they said had been abandoned by a bank.

In Portland, a press conference was held at the home of a woman facing foreclosure next March. She vowed to stay in her house until authorities take her out.

“We belong here,” said Deb Austin, who said she fell behind in payments after a cancer diagnosis and after her husband lost her second job. “And we’re not leaving.”

Exactly Raderby—and while I think the banks are jacking around when it comes to short sales (I am in real estate) and in some cases making it impossible for some to get up to speed, the bottom line is these houses aren’t free, which is what the occupiers want. Thank Barney Cant Win Again Frank for forcing banks to give loans to people who could NOT pay them back.

Gee. I wonder how those ‘homes’ came to be?

Do you suppose that someone built them? Why aren’t these people doing that? You know, working?

America has to stop carrying the dead weight. We have to.

Idiots, morons and the intellectually challenged, such as those defined by the OWS movement are a social burden. They are a personal burden. They are a civic burden. They are a resource burden. It’s time to cut the losses and dramatically reduce (cut) welfare, food stamps and other forms of “social” welfare.

While ‘charity’ is a large part of the American culture, socialism is not. The OWS groups have shed new light, thank you, on the intellectually dishonest argument that society should carry the weak ad infinitum.

Sorry. Too lazy or too stupid to exist? Well Darwin had a term for that. Remember? You insisted that Darwin was right. It’s called: Survival of The Fittest. Natures way of culling the stupid, weak and incapable.

Now, don’t try to tell me that we are all human and should love one another. Because you also taught us that a boy is a fish is a dog is a horse is a tree is a bush. And if that perspective is true then your existence is really just a coincidence and meaningless in the over all big picture of humanist existentialism.

It’s time we feed these clowns their own medicine until it hurts.

Exodus 20:15, “Thou shall not steal.” This is simple stuff.
Exodus 20:17, “Thou shall not covet your neighbor’s house.” Excuse me, but nowhere does it matter who owns your neighbor’s house.

Totally agree!! There is no way this story is what it is. We have struggled through hard times, but have 100% work ethic, individual responsibility, and pride in our selves and our lives. These “intitlement community” people must learn the hard way to play by the rules, like the rest of us. No one bailed us out either, and we are not part of “affirmative” anything. Cry me a river.
PS: There are a couple of forclosed homes in our area, but if the “Occupy” mob shows up, they are not going to get the Welcome Wagon.

You right wing hypercapitalists are the last remnant of laissez faire calvinist puritanical dog eat dog -pull yourselves up by your own boot straps -if you’re rich you muist be good american mindset. AAn enlightened european style entitlement democracy will be the norm here too in the future. And you die hards will catch on -like you have regarding other social issues. Long live OWS -all debts should be forgiven in the housing market-if you’re in it you own it and if you rent ,your rent should be cut in half to reset the corrupt housing market.Bail out the people like you did the unethical hedgefund derivitive speculators which deregulation of baanks allowed thanks to your greedy manipulated right wing policies.Equality of outcome IS part of a just society in so far that everyone needs a home, medical careand job or living wage. Long live the peoples’s century where socialist/capitalist hybrid and a parliamentary democracy will finally arrive in america too.

The problem with people like Rose here is that someone might actually listen to her and be stupid enough to agree. As a struggling land lord of a rental property, if you cut my rent in half, not only would I default on the mortgage for that home, it would probably make it extremely difficult to pay my mortgage as well! I’d default on 2 loans, and unlike you parasite libs, I wouldn’t ask the bank to forgive my loan. I signed on the dotted line knowing full well the risks. And why on EARTH would you want to be anything like EUROPE! Are you insane?! Are you not seeing what’s going on in Greece, Spain, Italy, etc.!

      If we…

      care … human rights” ??
If those are “human rights” Wouldn’t it be pointless to have a job since people that work,
work for the very things you claim to be rights?

Are you advocating Communism? I’m no expert but I understand that under Communist rule
We all work where we are told to work then all necessities
“home, food, medical care” are distributed equally to all. Is that what you

Why don’t we all just go buy homes and then never pay for them, ma’am! Where do you draw the line? Did anyone in your family ever think it might be a good idea to actually pay off your home in the 50 years you’ve been living in it rather than take out another loan to buy whatever you wanted?

Did you not agree that you would pay your loans off. Did you not understand that when someone gives you money and you say you are going to pay it back that you in fact, pay it back????

You propose a parliamentary system in which only the majority gets a say instead of a republican in which minority views are protected. Anyone who knows ANYTHING about economics knows that forcible lowering the rent on housing and apartments would FORCE landlords to close down said properties because it’ll cost them more to maintain the property/pay of the mortgage than they could ever make off of rent. Look up Price Ceiling. It is one of the most destructive economic policies in history next to the Price Floor. Incidentally you also propose a “living wage” which generally is a price floor that forces employers to hire fewer workers at higher wages. So in essence you support the two of the most destructive economic policies ever conceptualized.

How do you guarantee outcomes? I have never played an instrument. Should I be able to demand a sold out concert? Everyone should, if all outcomes are equal.

If I have the same guarantee of outcome whether I sit on my butt or work that butt off… Why bother to do the work? The only people who would still work are the people who are passionate about what they do. I‘m doubting people at McDonald’s will be showing up. I know I only do my job because of the rewards I get. And I bust my BUTT to do it for $17/hour and in hopes of proving myself EVEN more valuable in the future so they give me a raise. I won’t be working hard, if at all, if I get no more and no less than someone who sits back and collects.

If you get what you want, I’ll go Galt…Well… Maybe I’ll go Ragnar Danneskjöld instead. Steal from the useless to bring your system down as soon as possible.

Hey I got caught up in all the stupidity myself, did a debt consolidation folded into my mortgage, took out an equity line, now my home is about 1/3 less then what I owe…

I made this mess and I’m getting out of it on my own, I’m struggling here and there sometimes to make the mortgage payments, but I’ve sold some personal assets and luxury items to cover the bills, I’ve set the temp on the house lower then normal to bring my heating costs down, I make sure lights are turned off, I‘ve paid off my 2 cars so that I don’t have those bills to worry about and since I need a car and my wife needs one and public transportation is not feasible where we are, those had to stay. I’ve paid off my credit cards and I only spend what I have in the bank. I’ve tried to work with the mortgage comp, they refi‘d me for 3 years at a lower rate and I’m going to apply again to see if they’ll extend me for a while longer, but I’m making the sacrifices and paying my OBLIGATIONS that I got into of my own accord, the bank didn’t hold a gun to my head and make me sign anything, I knew what I was doing, but thought rosier times were ahead and for that I was stupid for not planning for the worst just in case, I’ve learned my lesson, and I’m painfully relearning it each month, but I WILL make my obligations and I will pay my debt and bills.

Try living in a house that was decorated 50 years ago..I am not saying thats what they did, but when my husband and I bought our house 3 years ago we paid cash.. the kitchen was probably a 1940 design which we knew we would have to remodel, then we had to replace the roof, even though we had been told it had been repaired we were lied to.. then we discovered some bad windows.. and then we had a new mortgage.. its not what we wanted, but its life.. All mortgages should be forgiven. That includes the landlord who is charging someone for rent. And all rents should be cut in half. Start the whole housing market from scratch and recognize that a home is a right in our 21stc society. That is progress and one day even you puritanical laisez faire capitalists will recognize-or your children or grandchildren will. You’re on the wrong side of enlightened values-barbaric in your own way even as you demean the fundamentalist muslims for being backward. One day you’ll catch up with enlightened european values just like one day the muslims will catch up with more western values too. Start from scratch huh? In that case lets burn every home to ground and every man must now build his home by the labor of his own hands. The lazy people may even hire the hard workers to build their house for them and we’ll be capitalists again. Saying people deserve to live in houses they don’t own is like saying that an unemployed person deserves to be paid with the wages of someone who has a full time job. You’re advocating the end of property rights, patent rights, and the inalienable right of the pursuit of happiness. You like Europe so much go there. If I felt I could have a better life in New York instead of Pennsylvania, why would I insist on living in PA?

Rose Ellen, do you believe also, that all mortgages should be forgiven (or rents cut in half) for the upper class, and the “1 percent”? How do you even “start from scratch”? Your logic doesnt even make sense. How is it good business, or good for the economy when all mortgages are forgiven? Who’s going to pay for it? Someone will, and I assume you believe the so called “1 percent”. Is this what you socialists call a fair share?

The article says it remains to be seen how the police will handle this. I have the solution: SWAT teams with riot gear, rubber bullets, tazers, those big cool shields. These people have gone from comitting disorderly conduct while camping on public places (while holding idiotic signs) to trespassing. Time to spend some time in jail.

This whole thing is ridiculous. They are also vandalizing, and ultimately turning the place into a dump and lowering the value. I know with repo’d cars, if the car sells at the auction say for $4000, and the loan is $6000, the person still has to pay the $2000 deficiency. I assume its the same for houses? So they are actually hurting the people they are supposedly “for”, if that person has to pay the deficiency, which would have been less if the house wasnt vandalized or damaged (maybe someone can back that up who knows for sure).

The way I see it, the empty houses are the banks property. If the police arent arresting these people, the bank could hire a private security force to clear the property. Its their property and their right to protect it. Say I was in the 1 percent (sarcasm intended), and I went to my winter home in Hawaii, I come back to my house in the spring and its full of OWS turds, I DO have the right to protect my property. Hopefully they crack down on these idiots and make an example out of them.

Plutocracy is also considered a large Oligarchy. Which unless my history is wrong is what Russia and China turned into once they turned to communism/socialism. In China’s case the Oligarchy is the Military. By tearing down the individual’s rights to make a good or a bad choice, you put us in the control of an Oligarchy. The people that started these banks had the choice to start them maybe as a group consolidating money. But they CHOSE everyone has a choice in their life, I and most Americans CHOOSE to work hard and make money. They CHOOSE how to use it, when you leave other people to CHOOSE for you they usually CHOOSE to help themselves at your cost. So tell me will you let someone choose which house YOU live in? Will you let someone else choose what YOU wear? Will you let someone choose which job YOU do? Because once a Socialistic Government is in place these people will have no choice but get a job or in extreme(which it can very easily transition to) situation refusing to work is considered TREASON. Tell me would you rather have your choices or the result of someone else choosing for you?

It defies logic to believe a recession this deep and widespread could be caused by a policy aimed at giving low income people housing. You might want to consider the thirty years of deregulating the financial sector and free trade policy that preceded this recession and all the blips before (S&L crisis, dot.com bubble, Enron,….) when coming up with a theory about the financial crisis, but oh wait, that would contradict you’re undying faith in the fantasy of self-regulating markets and trickle down.

I have never heard anyone make a dumber statement. You are probably too young to remember Jimmy Carter’s Community Reinvestment Act, that Clinton gave more power to. Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Franklin Raines were repeatedly warned by GW, as late as 2006 (and who was in charge of Congress then?) and many others that what happened would happen if they didn’t put a stop to loaning people money who would never pay it back. The loans piled up and caused a domino effect on housing prices, which in turn caused other economic problems, of which the current president pretender has done NOTHING about, but blame others. A role model for OWS and people like you.

The bankers were fools to give in to the ACORN/Democrat pressure regarding the Affordable Housing Act and their clever bean counters who came up with ways to diffuse these crazy loans were just as wrong as the people who started all of this mess. The Democrats always pressure for more entitlement spending ( vote getting underlying all of that “humanitarianism” ) and even today, they fail to address the deficit issue with more budget busting giveaways. These Democrats and the Republicans who continue to give into this pressure are the reason for the emergence of the Tea Party. The Tea Party wants to stop kicking the spending can down the road. You can’t judge all home owners who are being foreclosed on by a few. I think the banks could work with the home owners a little more than they are, especially those who have shown they have kept up with their payments until an unfortunate crisis occurs such as losing your job or something. If the banks would work with these people to perhaps lower the payments so that they could remain in their homes then it would be better for them and the banks as well. An empty house tempts vandalism whereas a home owner would be able to protect against that at least. I think it’s a case by case evaluation and banks should work more with people especially since they were bailed out by those very same people that they refuse to work with now.
