Troop Morale Down, Mental Health Problems Up in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) — A new report says American troops in Afghanistan are suffering with the highest rates of mental health problems since 2005 and that morale has plummeted.
The report, released Thursday, furnished the first detailed glimpse of the psychological cost of a campaign commanders and officials say has reversed the momentum of the insurgency. Among other things, it says the dramatic increase in fighting there is one of the key factors affecting the mental health of the uniformed forces. For instance, some 70 to 80 percent of troops surveyed for the report said they had seen a buddy killed or wounded.

The report also said that the psychological problems may actually be fewer than expected, given the high level of combat troops are seeing. And the military said it has doubled the mental health staff in the country to help troops cope with their problems.
The data comes from a mental health team that polled more than 900 soldiers, 335 Marines and 85 mental health workers on the Afghan battlefield during last July and August, as troops surged into the country under the Obama administration’s new strategy for fighting the insurgency.
Baring in mind the fact that the aforementioned troop study was conducted in 2010, changes in troop morale since then have not yet been examined. Earlier this month, the Montgomery Advertiser reported on U.S. Rep. Martha Roby’s trip to Afghanistan. Upon returning she claimed that troop morale is high following Osama bin Laden’s death.
“It had an extremely positive impact on the morale of our troops,” said Roby. “This is a significant moment in history for the United States. With that being said, we realize there is much to do. We don’t just stop because Osama bin Laden is dead.”
President Barack Obama sent an additional 30,000 troops to Afghanistan last year to build the force to the current 100,000. Commanders and administration officials say the push has weakened the Taliban, and a limited troop withdrawal is planned by this July.
The new mental health study also reaffirms the long-held view on the price paid for repeated tours of duty: mental health problems were greater for troops on their third or fourth deployment.
The military says it boosted the mental health staff in the country to one for every 646 soldiers last year compared, compared to one for every 1,123 in 2009.

The comander in chief while a senator did everything that he could do to bash the military as much as he could. No wonder moral is down they are over there fight and should be home. The war ion Afghanistan is a lost cause and the troops know this they are there and the people there hate us and so it is time to leave. If we wanted to win in Afghanistan we need to cross over in Pakistan in the border region and go kill the Taliban there instead of waiting in Afghanistan for them to come over and roadside bomb us to death. The Taliban strategy is the same that they did during Charlie Wilson‘s war pick you apart with numerous small attack and run to the mountains where we won’t go and kill them.

But know this, O Israel; they may forsake you but I will never forsake you – they may desert you, but I, the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel will never forsake you…When the veil starts to be lifted from those who profess to be your friends, and your allies start to scatter…so in that moment you shall hear the sounds of war and the sounds of war shall increase. Yes, and in the twinkling of an eye, so shall they unite against you. And you shall say: “We are without help. We shall be driven into the sea.” But I tell you that in that day and in that hour you shall call upon My Name, and I Myself shall sovereignly scatter them. I shall winnow them & I shall make you a terror among the nations. And they shall shake bc of My sovereign hand upon you….And so shall Michael, mighty Prince of Israel, and his mighty angelic warriors join with you and a great victory shall occur. And then there shall be peace for a season until the time of the great end when all nations shall gather against you – from the East and West and the South and the North – at that battle called Armageddon.”

Posted on May 19, 2011 at 11:14pmWhat I‘m surprised they didn’t mention is how much boyfriends/girlfriends/spouses cheating on a person deployed effects their “mental health.” I read a story where an army guy was on his month break from being deployed, only to discover his wife had left him, and then he went back to Iraq severely depressed. I’ve seen a marine who lost both his legs, and found out in the hospital that his wife had been cheating on him the whole time. This is not to say that it is the only factor, but it is a large one. We have incredibly strong men and women serving our country, and weak nature that is produced by our sex obsessed culture does not provide the support that our troops deserve. May God bless the military husbands/wives that authentically provide that love and support, and don’t cut and run when things get tough.

you wrap yourself in that little lie and roll around in bed with it. ;)
if you want to actually read the reports… they all say, “growing heroin use…”, as in, increase in usage … NOT growing heroin TO use…

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 4:26pmThat’s what happens when you WAKE UP and realize that you are protecting opium dealing puppet govts., poppy fields, and oil pipeline pathways. Realize your oath swearing to defend the CONSTITUTION from enemies bot foreign AND DOMESTIC, while the TSA gropes 6 year olds, and checks baby diapers for turd bombs, MEANT NOTHING. Time to GTFO of that rathole, and come home and defend OUR borders, not the Afghan border. Time to quit chasing goat herders around that NEVER posed a threat to this nation. If they want to do some good then come home, and defend the Constitution from the criminals in DC that are using it for toilet paper. They are CREATING more terrorists than they can kill, by killing people just trying to defend their homeland, just as WE would if foreign invaders were kicking in OUR DOORS and killing OUR loved ones.
Report Post »If 15 of the 19 supposed hijackers were supposedly from Saudi Arabia, then tell them to get their ass over THERE and BOM8 THEIR asses instead. Oh…That’s right. Our govt. is in bed with them too.
On second thought, just tell them to come home. We appreciate their willingness to lay their lives on the line for OUR COUNTRY AND OUR CONSTITUTION, and OUR REPUBLIC, not Haliburton, KBR, GE, Lockheed Martin, Exxon Mobil, Raytheon, and the other blood sucking corporations that they are fighting to protect, because they DAMN sure aren’t protecting OUR freedoms.
