Troop Morale Down, Mental Health Problems Up in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) — A new report says American troops in Afghanistan are suffering with the highest rates of mental health problems since 2005 and that morale has plummeted.

The report, released Thursday, furnished the first detailed glimpse of the psychological cost of a campaign commanders and officials say has reversed the momentum of the insurgency. Among other things, it says the dramatic increase in fighting there is one of the key factors affecting the mental health of the uniformed forces. For instance, some 70 to 80 percent of troops surveyed for the report said they had seen a buddy killed or wounded.

Troop Morale Down, Mental Health Problems Up in Afghanistan

The report also said that the psychological problems may actually be fewer than expected, given the high level of combat troops are seeing. And the military said it has doubled the mental health staff in the country to help troops cope with their problems.

The data comes from a mental health team that polled more than 900 soldiers, 335 Marines and 85 mental health workers on the Afghan battlefield during last July and August, as troops surged into the country under the Obama administration’s new strategy for fighting the insurgency.

Baring in mind the fact that the aforementioned troop study was conducted in 2010, changes in troop morale since then have not yet been examined.  Earlier this month, the Montgomery Advertiser reported on U.S. Rep. Martha Roby’s trip to Afghanistan.  Upon returning she claimed that troop morale is high following Osama bin Laden’s death.

“It had an extremely positive impact on the morale of our troops,” said Roby. “This is a significant moment in history for the United States. With that being said, we realize there is much to do. We don’t just stop because Osama bin Laden is dead.”

President Barack Obama sent an additional 30,000 troops to Afghanistan last year to build the force to the current 100,000. Commanders and administration officials say the push has weakened the Taliban, and a limited troop withdrawal is planned by this July.

The new mental health study also reaffirms the long-held view on the price paid for repeated tours of duty: mental health problems were greater for troops on their third or fourth deployment.

The military says it boosted the mental health staff in the country to one for every 646 soldiers last year compared, compared to one for every 1,123 in 2009.

Tell him “thanks” for swearing to defend the CONSTITUTION from enemies bot foreign AND DOMESTIC, while the TSA gropes 6 year olds, and checks baby diapers for turd bombs. Tell him thanks a lot. Tell him to get his ass out of that rathole, and come home and defend OUR borders, not the Afghan border. Tell him to quit chasing goat herders around that NEVER posed a threat to this nation. Tell him if he wants to do some good then come home, and defend the Constitution from the criminals in DC that are using it for toilet paper. Tell him that he is CREATING more terrorists than he can kill, by killing people just trying to defend their homeland, just as WE would if foreign invaders were kicking in OUR DOORS and killing OUR loved ones.
If 15 of the 19 supposed hijackers were supposedly from Saudi Arabia, then tell him to get his ass over THERE and BOM8 THEIR asses instead. Oh…That’s right. Our govt. is in bed with them too.
On second thought, just tell him to come home. We appreciate his willingness to lay his life on the line for HIS COUNTRY AND HIS CONSTITUTION not Haliburton, KBR, GE, Lockheed Martin, Exxon Mobil, Raytheon, and the other blood sucking corporations that he is fighting to protect, because he DAMN sure isn’t protecting OUR freedoms.

The troops should get the support of their leader but who his he? The comander in chief while a senator did everything that he could do to bash the military as much as he could. No wonder moral is down they are over there fight and should be home. The war ion Afghanistan is a lost cause and the troops know this they are there and the people there hate us and so it is time to leave. If we wanted to win in Afghanistan we need to cross over in Pakistan in the border region and go kill the Taliban there instead of waiting in Afghanistan for them to come over and roadside bomb us to death. The Taliban strategy is the same that they did during Charlie Wilson‘s war pick you apart with numerous small attack and run to the mountains where we won’t go and kill them.

I’m still happy to have served our nation for you to believe my family and I will burn in hell (which we don’t believe in by the way). When are we going to realize that the game of “my God is better than yours” has been played out by both Christianity AND Islam (Crusades & Caliphates). (continued)…”So it is now in this season that even your hidden enemies shall arise and yes, it shall seem as even on ONE DAY that the whole world has forsaken you (5/19/11 ?). But know this, O Israel; they may forsake you but I will never forsake you – they may desert you, but I, the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel will never forsake you…When the veil starts to be lifted from those who profess to be your friends, and your allies start to scatter…so in that moment you shall hear the sounds of war and the sounds of war shall increase. Yes, and in the twinkling of an eye, so shall they unite against you. And you shall say: “We are without help. We shall be driven into the sea.” But I tell you that in that day and in that hour you shall call upon My Name, and I Myself shall sovereignly scatter them. I shall winnow them & I shall make you a terror among the nations. And they shall shake bc of My sovereign hand upon you….And so shall Michael, mighty Prince of Israel, and his mighty angelic warriors join with you and a great victory shall occur. And then there shall be peace for a season until the time of the great end when all nations shall gather against you – from the East and West and the South and the North – at that battle called Armageddon.”

What I‘m surprised they didn’t mention is how much boyfriends/girlfriends/spouses cheating on a person deployed effects their “mental health.” I read a story where an army guy was on his month break from being deployed, only to discover his wife had left him, and then he went back to Iraq severely depressed. I’ve seen a marine who lost both his legs, and found out in the hospital that his wife had been cheating on him the whole time. This is not to say that it is the only factor, but it is a large one. We have incredibly strong men and women serving our country, and weak nature that is produced by our sex obsessed culture does not provide the support that our troops deserve. May God bless the military husbands/wives that authentically provide that love and support, and don’t cut and run when things get tough.

For those interested, here’s a “prophetic word” from God written by Wendy Alec in 1999, “Journal of the Unknown Prophet” re Israel that I think just came to pass:
“I shall allow the thoughts and motives and intents of the nations and govn’ts to resurrect to the surface that you may be in no doubt as to who is your friend & who is your enemy….For even the govn’ts of the West and the Western Powers shall shift & sway & even those who you thought were solid allies to you shall ..shift allegiance…My Spirit has heard the conversations in the corridors of the White House…..whispered conversations of the bankers & the traders of oil and the armaments…For each is a betrayer..each one is full of treachery, each one looks to that which is expedient…even your named feew friends are your enemies..And I am grieved with a great grieving.

“The goal is the destruction of US imperialism and the achievement of a classless world: world communism. Winning state power in the US will occur as a result of the military forces of the US overextending themselves around the world and being defeated piecemeal; struggle within the US will be a vital part of this process, but when the revolution triumphs in the US it will have been made by the people of the whole world. For socialism to be defined in national terms within so

They both have said they are there mostly for their fellow soldiers, but they don’t feel the mission is worth it. The Afghans don’t want them over there, don’t appreciate what they are trying to do, and their integrity seems to be questioned by leadership (congress/president). Plus, a lot of the people I work with that are coming back seem to have the same stance, they are there for their fellow soldiers/airmen, but the mission just isn’t worth it anymore.

“We the people” on this website however, selfishly, decide that preserving this fictitious sense of security, and furthering our empire is more important than these troops and their families.

No other candidate is serious enough to bring these people home. Ten years, 1 trillion dollars, and 5,000 lives is enough, in my humble opinion.

Its going to get worse. I guess people will take action when they become hungry though. Pull them out and give them a breather for the coming wars. Tempers Fly…Thanks for your service.

@70′s kid-you hit the nail on the head with that one.i read the book also and the same theme jumped out at me.they would all be alive today were it not for insane ROE’s and the prospect of being prosecuted for doing exactly what they are trained and ordered to do.
@mossbrain-the suicides you speak of were mostly associated with the 101st airborne in kentucky-ft.campbell,i believe.a follow-up report on those suicides revealed that an army doc-probably of middle eastern descent, like at my VA-was over prescribing prozac and other anti-depressants.given the WIDELY known side effects of such drugs, how could you not expect a dramatic rise in suicides?i’m no expert, but it seems rational to me that if a soldier needs such drugs,he/she isn’t mentally fit for combat.IMHO,assignment to non-combat duties or an honorable discharge would be a much better alternative.
@sister lace-i tried to ignore your post, didn’t work.i spend alot of my time trying to contain the beast within, yet there is always someone like you that just has to come along and rattle it’s cage.keep poking and prodding,my friend.there’s more of us out there than there are of you.i hope you‘re ready when someone’s beast breaks free.
p.s.-i do,however, agree about the poppy fields.if we wanted to get out of the“stan”,nape the fields and call it a day.

If good king barry refuses to let them engage with full force, if their mission is no longer viable, they need to be brought home.At some point you have to lead, follow or get out of the way.We are stuck with a president who REFUSES to do any of those things. Don’t let the door hit you.

What’s despicable is the fact that my tax dollars are being spent to prop up dictators worldwide.
What’s despicable is the FACT that the US Military is helping the TALIBAN grow and sell HEROIN.
What’s despicable is the FACT that the CIA/BATFE is helping the Mexican Drug cartels move guns, drugs, and cash.
What’s despicable is the CIA,Pentagon, and Nato forces working with AL QAEDA.
What‘s despicable is you acting like you don’t understand the outrage of the taxpayer who is being robbed blind for this fiasco while the country is B.R.O.K.E. – BEING RAPED OPENLY by KEYNESIAN ECONOMICS.

Dustyluv (whatever that’s supposed to mean) I don’t feel too highly of you either.

Jimmythebullet said: “there’s more of us out there than there are of you.”

Who are the “US” you are referring to? Because if you think the majority of the country supports being robbed blind and foreign wars based on false pretense, you are absolutely delusional.

If you think that there are more people that support the Federal Reserve/ IRS, Endless Military Action, Violation of Civil Rights, Corruption, the Police State, than those WHO DO NOT and will FIGHT VICIOUSLY, you are absolutely OFF YOUR ROCKER and in DENIAL.

You don’t have a choice but to agree with me about the HEROIN being extracted from poppy facilitated by my tax dollars, while the Police State harrasses and prosecutes us for drug use in a phony war on drugs.

I like sending care pkgs to them to help lift their spirits. I pick the Marines from AnyMarine.com. many of them ask for pen pals, so maybe some of you Blazers could help by writing some letters to them. You can read their notes to the public, what they could use, and get their addresses from AnyMarine.com and click on where to send. I try to target the ones I’n more austere locations. I find one box a month works for me. Anyway, if you or your church could get together and send pkgs I’m sure those young men would appreciate it.

i’m pretty sure the “american troops” are there “growing heroin”. .. yeah.. that makes total sense… they are there just to “grow heroin” for us, what’s the problem with that? we all need poppies…
you wrap yourself in that little lie and roll around in bed with it. ;)

if you want to actually read the reports… they all say, “growing heroin use…”, as in, increase in usage … NOT growing heroin TO use…

That’s what happens when you WAKE UP and realize that you are protecting opium dealing puppet govts., poppy fields, and oil pipeline pathways. Realize your oath swearing to defend the CONSTITUTION from enemies bot foreign AND DOMESTIC, while the TSA gropes 6 year olds, and checks baby diapers for turd bombs, MEANT NOTHING. Time to GTFO of that rathole, and come home and defend OUR borders, not the Afghan border. Time to quit chasing goat herders around that NEVER posed a threat to this nation. If they want to do some good then come home, and defend the Constitution from the criminals in DC that are using it for toilet paper. They are CREATING more terrorists than they can kill, by killing people just trying to defend their homeland, just as WE would if foreign invaders were kicking in OUR DOORS and killing OUR loved ones.
If 15 of the 19 supposed hijackers were supposedly from Saudi Arabia, then tell them to get their ass over THERE and BOM8 THEIR asses instead. Oh…That’s right. Our govt. is in bed with them too.
On second thought, just tell them to come home. We appreciate their willingness to lay their lives on the line for OUR COUNTRY AND OUR CONSTITUTION, and OUR REPUBLIC, not Haliburton, KBR, GE, Lockheed Martin, Exxon Mobil, Raytheon, and the other blood sucking corporations that they are fighting to protect, because they DAMN sure aren’t protecting OUR freedoms.
