Trouble in Paradise? Hawaii Lawmakers Consider ‘Radical’ Proposal to Track Every Website You Visit

Hawaii Legislators Considering Controversial Internet Tracking ProposalHawaii legislators are considering a new proposal that would require Internet service providers to collect and retain for two years data on every website residents visit.

CNET reports that H.B. 2288 would require any company that provides an Internet connection to users to maintain “Internet destination history information” and “subscriber’s information”. CNET reports the U.S. Internet Service Provider Association as saying this legislation is “the broadest mandate we’ve seen.”

According to CNET, the legislation was introduced by Rep. John Mizuno, a democrat. Similar legislation was brought to the state Senate side by democratic Jill Tokuda to ”address concerns raised by Rep. Kymberly Pine” whose email account was hacked last summer, at which time Pine began advocating for  “tougher cyber laws at the Hawaii State Capitol”:

“We must do everything we can to protect the people of Hawaii from these attacks and give prosecutors the tools to ensure justice is served for victims,” Pine said at the time.

Criticism against the legislation includes the broad language of the bill that could require Internet providers such as coffee shops and hotels to track such information as well as privacy issues that come with prolonged data retention.

CNET reports Daniel Leuck, chief executive of Honolulu-based software company Ikayzo, as saying that the legislation is a “radical violation of privacy” that “opens the door to rampant Fourth Amendment violations.”  He also said that recording phone conversations would be less of an intrusion.

UPDATE:

According to CNET, Rep. Pine has now backed down from the legislation:

A Hawaii politician who proposed requiring Internet providers to record every Web site their customers visit is now backing away from the controversial legislation.

Rep. Kymberly Pine, an Oahu Republican and the House minority floor leader, told CNET this evening that her intention was to protect “victims of crime,” not compile virtual dossiers on every resident of–or visitor to–the Aloha State who uses the Internet.

“We do not want to know where everyone goes on the Internet,” Pine said. “That’s not our interest. We just want the ability for law enforcement to be able to capture the activities of crime.”

It makes me wonder if, living in MN, and I happen to visit a web site originating from Hawaii, if they will track me too from there to here. And once they have my IP address, is it put into their database and watched from then on by them? Is this a Federal Government thingie in a round-a-bout way?

Hawaii was a kingdom before it was a state, and they generally still year for an iron hand to guide their lives. This kind of thing, to them, seems natural. They’re very, very subservient as a culture. It’s why leftists flock to the place, it‘s a leftie’s wet dream…a population clamouring to be controlled, no opposition, and federal funding to cover their local mistakes.

Dream on friend, you obviously haven’t been paying attention, they are two sides of the same coin. Until the people demand that character means everything, that a candidate professes that the Constitution must be upheld unequivocally and that our rights by it come from God (the god of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob), then and only then will you have a reason for hope in our government turning things right(eous) again.

How precisely is Garmin tracking every website you visit?

Further, how are they tracking where you are precisely? GPS is analogous to what used to be called radio triangulation. You take the signal strength from three hypothetical towers, compare them and glean a distance based off of a formula for where you are in relation to all three, which pinpoints your location. At no point do the towers know where you are. Same thing with GPS, only with satellites. As far as I know, and please show me where I’m wrong by links if I am, your standard in hand GPS or in car (not factory installed) GPS doesn’t transmit, it only receives.

Google can only track you regarding where you enter from and exit to from its site, they do not have access to the entire router system to track your every move, and it’s easy enough to delete/prevent their cookies if you so desire (and don’t use their crap toolbar web products, like Chrome).

Maybe not right now, but just give them a a little more time and swipes from their collective, corrupt pens to pass the legislation under our noses in the 11th hour, while most are all asleep, and those who are not will not be heard anyhow. To say it hasn‘t been done yet just precludes the eventuality of it not happening don’t you agree? Obama winning the next election will surely close ALL doors to rational, common-sense application of our laws, both written and existing.

The entire nation has turned against Democrat Communists and their Chairman Obama. They must stop the flow of news and the truth if they are to survive. If they do not shut down the Internet, they face prison and conviction for treason as the truth emerges. We have learned that Newt received over $1Million from Fannie as hush money and Romney’s dedication to Obama care. We learned all of this from the Internet.

Be quiet He is correct. What you do for a living should be treated as a profession and effort should be applied. I have studied a lifetime in the technology I work at and I study to become better every day. Almost 60 now and I have never stopped applying myself and learning. I see this 3rd grade language skill with every news agency, and our teachers are just as bad as seen by the lack of education an entire generation now has. No excuse. If you charge for doing something try to be good or get out. You are nothing more than a thief to cash a paycheck for a week of slacking off on the job, having no motivation or self respect to try to improve each day. This would make you a democrat on welfare if this was your attitude towards those who work hard to afford your unjustly gained money. I like to read the news and I prefer to not suffer through grammar best compared to the skills of a poorly trained monkey.

Paranoia is at an all time high. Why? Because the government has been screwing the American people and they are afraid that we may be “plotting” revenge. Come on now. People, I hope, are a lot smarter then what this administration gives us credit for. The internet is simply a tool…not a weapon. i am not going to stop what I am doing because I am afraid of what someone will find. Go ahead, spy on me. You may not like what I say, so what happens? Are the internet police going to arrest? Obama has let this country get out of control…spying on Americans; allowing illegals to stay in the country. So tell me, did you expect anything less then those that run the internet to start dossiers on all of us? If you don’t like what is about to occur, vote Obama and his mafia out. Get them the hell out of there and maybe we can start to resume our daily activities without the level of paranoia and fear. Otherwise, keep it clean; speak your mind without being threatening; and lead your life as normal.

Yeah and I hope that if it passes that someone has the guts to challenge it. It’s completely unconstitutional as it severely violates the Forth Amendment.

When will politicians (and others) realize that the internet is not public domain. It may seem like it because you can go to so many places and do things as if you were driving around in public, but it’s all completely private except Government activity.

This page that we are looking at right now is nothing more than a private phone call with pictures (and sound) that is facilitated on a Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) sitting in some company’s private server somewhere.

The direct analogy is that this particular CSS is functioning exactly like a cell phone.
