TSA Cuts No Slack for Special Needs Man and His Plastic Toy Hammer

ROMULUS, Mich. (WJBK) – The Mandy family says they were on their way to the happiest place on earth (Disney), but had to go through hell to get there.

“I realize they’re trying to keep people safe, but come on, does he look like a terrorist?” said Dr. David Mandy.

The family was going through security when two TSA agents singled Drew Mandy out for a special pat down. Drew is severely mentally disabled. He’s 29, but his parents said he has the mental capacity of a two-year-old, which made the experience that followed at metro Detroit’s McNamera Terminal that much harder to deal with.

“You have got to be kidding me. I honestly felt that those two agents did not know what they were doing,” Mandy told us.

Dr. Mandy claimed they asked Drew to place his feet on the yellow shoe line, something he didn’t understand. They proceeded to pat his pants down, questioning the padding which was his adult diapers. When the agents asked Drew to take his hand and rub the front and back of his pants so they could swab it for explosives, his dad stepped in and tried to explain that Drew was mentally challenged.

“They said, ‘Please, sir, we know what we’re doing,’” Mandy said.

The TSA agents saw Drew holding a six-inch plastic hammer.

“My son carries his ball and his hammer for security. He goes everywhere with (them),” said Mandy.

The TSA it seems saw the toy as a weapon.

      That would work. Because there will be a few who will still fly, and the arlines would lose millions daily by flying a plane 90% empty. Unlike Beck, I believe in BOYCOTT. but it must be organized. The news org’s wont mention it so how do you get the word out to the general public to do this? It would only take a week of boycotts before the TSA is a thing of the past.

    My heart went out to that family. I cannot even imagine that happening to us. What a nightmare…there is no way law abiding Americans should go through that having to watch their families humiliated…what a crying shame!!!

    Enough! the last time I flew was the year after 911..there was NONE of this BS. no pat down or other un-constitutional behavior.

    Until the majority of fliers start protesting with their wallets and their VOTEs this gestapo like behavior by our government under the auspices of “keeping us all safe” will be your childrens future in EVERYTHING they do.

    Q. How many people die each year in auto-accidents? over 50k and no one feels me up before I go drive my car..COME ON FLIERS/CARRIERS – get a clue and stand up for your rights.

      I don’t fly anymore. If I can’t get there by car, I don’t go! I refuse to be party to this legalized molestation. Cold War Vet is right–this is clear violation of our right to be free of unreasonable search and seizure. Every time they enact something like this and get away with it, our rights become a little less secure.

      I’m with you Grammy. I have said if I can’t drive, swim or paddle a boat, I’m not going. This can’t work for everyone, but it’s my choice. When the father tried to explain, they wouldn’t listen. Can’t blame the workers, they’re only following the rules (most are dumb as dirt) but I do blame we the people for putting up with this Gestapo search & seizure. Stop flying for a few weeks and see if they make changes.
      I want to see the type people who’ve done these dirty deeds get patted down every time and leave the babies & mentally challenged alone, especially when they are with parents who can be vouched for. If the police don’t have to feel up crotches in a pat down, why should TSA?

Humiliate the mentally disabled with acts that if you or I did would be call molestation, but oh,were not the government. But then they let the Muslim right though.       Um Timothy McVeigh comes to mind. He was an entirely different species of nut case (they come in all flavors). But he’s the only one I can think of who was non-Muslim. The other difference was, he was attempting to target the government (not that this excuses what he did, mind you). The Muslims tend to favor targeting civilians, including children whenever possible. Because that is the kind of moderate, peace-loving folks they are.

    Usually I’m with you on the TSA, but, think about this – what if someone was using him to get things beyond the gate – terrorists have been known to use the mentally handicap to achieve their ends. On the other hand, it‘s a shame that the agents wouldn’t listen, they could have been thorough in their duties but also compassionate to this individual and family. Shouldn’t be to hard to see this man was challenged.

I think there is a lesson in there for those who admire this crowd so much. They only tolerate the “useful idiots” as long as they are useful. The minute they are not, shove ‘em on a train and off to the camps they go with the rest of the “undesirables”.

      It has been said that a society is judged by how it treats its weakest members. What would this little TSA scene say about OUR society? SHAME on these liberal fools who pretend to be sooooo tolerant, while harboring all kinds of spite and hatred toward just about everybody else. Kind of like the Muslims. No wonder these two groups like each other so much–they have so much in common . . .

      Working with the developmentally disabled population, it is odd to see how many left leaning people are drawn to this field of service. Not all Ds are hateful, abortion loving eugenecists, but there is often a real disconnect between some folks who clamor about the need to have abortion as an option (or mandate)… and then advocate for a program that serves the MR population. You can hold conflicting views when your bread and butter is at play. It’s called cognitive dissonance.
      Lots of Medicaid money trickles down to the MR population throughout the states; this mean govt. jobs and being able to write policy and procedure. If there’s one area where progressives excel, it’s telling other people what to do. I work with some fine folks, but some of the administration up the govt. food chain, in my opinion, could just as easily be working towards meeting the needs of stray dogs and cats. Policy first, people second. Fun to butt heads with when they start telling families they must meet insane demands like a govt. approved crisis plan. ‘Cause see, the program wants to encourage normalcy. Don’t we all have a written evacuation and emergency response plan that includes a chain of custody in our homes? Let me just go grab mine…. Yep. This is the level of genius one can expect. I’ll review the TSA story on Monday… always amusing to see bureaucrats circle the wagons.

Hopefully we will have gutsy conservatives in 2012 that won’t allow this crap! BEWARE….TSA pat-downs are preparation for mandatory vaccinations of the American public. The biggest obstacle to the leftist agenda is liberty and free Americans. Yes the Constitution is an obstacle for Obama. I am very sorry that this young guy was HARASSED!

      The TSA is about as messed up an agency as there is in present day Amerika. But it‘s a beyond silly to jump to the conclusion that they’re going to start vaccinating people in airport screening lines. All levels of government already have LOTS of practise getting people to stand in lines.

      And as a “stop-and-think about-it” moment…I wonder how much C4 can be hidden in an adult sized diaper? (answer.. a lot) And, If the average TSA agent is a stupid as we fear they are…do we REALLY want them “thinking”on their own? (that would be like giving a 3 year-old a bottle of whiskey and the car keys).

      The reality is … any system that requires thousands of people to check millions of people quickly, 24/7/365 is going to do something incredibly callous/stupid/non-sensical several times a day. Regs are written to ban “hammers”…who’d have thought that it would be neccesssary to stipulate “plastic toy hammers carried by mentally handicaped persons as security ”blankets“ are OK”? Even if the TSA managed to hire the best people they could, at what they were allowed to pay..there will be a situation several times a day. The laws of probability make sure that after billions of prople get searched by thousands of TSA agents some guy wearing a diaper would eventually cross paths with some TSA agent that may have just been chewed out and put on probation by a supervisor, for missing a knife hidden in a box of tampons.

      The government makes sure that the TSA agents can‘t think for themselves and that they aren’t the brightest crayon in the box, so that they follow orders. TSA agents have a great gig-good pay, low stress, benefits, job security. They aren’t going to speak up and mess up their gig. They’ll be unionized before we know it and will add to the drones that we already have working in our corrupt government.

    This is horrible and unfortunate on more than one level. You’d think the TSA could figure this out, but apparently not.

    This is one example of big, out of control government going way too far. TSA patdowns and “porno scans” are a direct violation of the 4th Amendment. Putting every member of the general public through a criminal-style search is “unreasonable search and seizure.” Where’s the supreme court on this issue?

    This travesty of power abuse is laid directly at Obama’s feet. He and his administration are allowing it for corrupt, profitable purposes, at the expense of the people.

    Let’s shut it down in 2012 or sooner!

      actually, you volunteer to go through the “porno scanners” to use a service that is offered to you. You have no god given right to fly in an airplane, and as such they can do whatever they want before you can fly and it will not fall under the authority of the constitution.

      To clarify, airline companies, EX: Delta or SW, are private companies, whereas TSA is a government agency run by Homeland Security. With this in mind, you are incorrect, it does fall under the authority of the constitution.

      With that said, we do have the right to purchase a private commodity and fly without assault, harassment and unreasonable search & seizure..

      I do appreciate your comments and any form of interest or investigation into how the government is treating us, the citizens protected under the constitution.

We have the FREEDOM to fly in an airplane that is owned and operated by a private company. They may require that we submit to security checks before boarding their airline. The problem is that this is a government entity that is violating our 4th Amendment, not a private company. Even if the airline was owned by the government it would still be a violation of our rights for them to “unreasonably” search us before boarding the plane without a warrant. There is nothing, absolutely NOTHING, in the Constitution that gives the government this kind of power over us. The only thing that has happened over the years was terrorists hijacking planes, killing passengers etc…which caused all of the extra security concerns. If these TSA hacks would be given some classes from the FBI as to how to spot (read: PROFILE) the bad guys and learn how to talk to them and determine if they are worth a second or third look, then there wouldn’t be this problem. I’m with KICKAGRANDMA…Nobody is groping this man, or my wife. We need to ask the TSA people, every time they want to single us out for a enhanced examination, if they have a search warrant. This has got to stop!

      We Americans have plenty of rights. Including the right to unrestricted travel as we see fit. That’s part of our life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Unless a certified law enforcement official has a warrant, signed by a judge, or at the very least, probable cause, they may not search my person, my vehicle or my premises.

      It’s all in the Fourth Amendment, and I will not accept TSA’s unconstitutional violation of our rights.
      This is not going to quietly fade away into “accepted” normalcy. This gross infringement on the people of the United States must end now. We need this evil government stupidity replaced with a more reliable and FAIR system.

      Let’s do it the way the Israelis do it. They have trained professionals, even psychologists, to screen and PROFILE EVERYONE, just by observing them. If they think you might be a security risk, they’ll pull you aside for further evaluation. Kind of like what we might call “probable cause.” I bet you’ve never heard of terror onboard an El Al (Israeli airline) flight. They don’t have terrorists passing through Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv either. And nobody gets offended. THAT’S the way we should do it here. Secure skies are good for business. The TSA is thuggery.

      Dismantle the TSA, and replace those filthy, perverted, brain-dead dirtbags with a new system!

      This is Detroit … the largest concentration of Muslims outside of the middle east live nearby in Dearborn .. and they harrass a mentally challenged man … I too would wager that there WERE middle eastern young men going through the TSA screening that we NOT subject to ANY search. This is exactly why I refuse to fly .. it is unsafe since they are targeting the WRONG people for searches.

      This group has gone beyond out of control, and I honestly feel they are just a smokescreen by the Homeland Security and the administration to put even more pressure on all that travel, so the admin will have a reason to put even more regulations into effect for more control – thus causing even more restrictions to the system and more pressure.

      Here in NJ, we went on a practice run thru security before our flight. At Continental Airlines they were great. They gave us fake tickets so my we could practice going thru. They even asked us if we wanted to jump the line we said No. They were kind and understanding. Next Saturday we fly for real. Hope it goes as well. Our son is similar to the man in the article.

      Its not really the TSA, its the American Governments policy. The TSA doesn’t do what it is not mandated to do buy higher authortity. But I will give you that since their inception and like so many other start ups, people wishing to punch their tickets within TSA came up with all kinds of nonsensical stuff to put the American people thru in the name of fighting terrorism.       I have a brother just like Drew. For anyone who hasn’t had experience with people like Drew & my brother, this kind of abusive treatment is VERY SCARY to them. The same terror you would feel if someone was holding you by one pinkie over the grand canyon and you were slipping. And taking away his “security blanket” is nothing short of intentional cruelty and abuse. Anyone who agrees with this TSA action should be shot where they stand.

      I’m done – this is my straw. I have no desire to save a country where people get away with doing this and everybody else stands around and lets them. Screw it. Let the destruction begin. Me & mine are prepared to and will survive. And all those jack-booted thugs and the ignorant sheep who allow them to exist can go straight to he!!. When the evil ones are all burning, maybe we can start again.

      Now I’m going to have a good cry and thank God for blessing me with my brother – he’s the purest, most loving person I’ve ever known.

      Do the American people have it inside them to take this step? Is this step already necessary? My hope is that the TRUTH will start to have the biggest effect. The reason voting has not worked in the recent past is because the American people have had the TRUTH witheld from them through normal media outlets. As the truth starts to come to light for those who have been asleep I believe that the country will correct itself. I believe it already has started the correction. We must have the TRUTH to continue this correction. The American people will rise to the occassion!!!!!!!!!

To “correct” this country you would need 2/3 of the house and the senate to be constitutionalists (non-gop and non dem) and you would need 3/4 of state’s government. You need this because you will need veto majorities AND amendments to correct this country. You are a fool if you think that is possible. EVERY single one would have to get in. I mean this with every fiber of my being, you are a fool if you think this correction can be legislated at this point. Go tune in to Beck.

      I flatly refuse to fly…I am 60 plus years old, have 4 grandkids, but I am not allowing any TSA agent to feel me up or restrict my flying…last time I flew, they held me up for 15 minutes for an empty tube of wipe on lipstick I left in my purse to help if my lips got dry in flight. You could see the tube was empty..but they held my purse and checked and double checked it..and I sure don’t look like a terrorist. Blonde, blue eyed, middle aged grandma…yeah right…….Kiss my rosey red TSA, I want to go to Hawaii, but I ain’t going, because I’ll not put up with your bull crap….

      First of all, I have watched every single episode of Glenn Beck on Fox for the last 2 years at least. The correction of the U.S. ship will be made ONLY by the TRUTH being told. You are right…..change cannot be legislated. My point is that TRUTH causes the correction……. The American people must have it in order for change to occur and they are starting to get it. Whenever “any form of government becomes destructive” we have the constitutional right to abolish it. First, the people must be informed as to how government has become destructive. So many people don’t have the truth and therefore idolize big govt. as the answer. They don’t see it as destructive at all. The truth about big govt. is not pretty. In fact, it is pretty ugly.       Only two thing can stop this: god(if He chooses) or abolishment. If you believe in Him and read Scripture you would know that His method has been abolishment. (speaking of human governments not forgiveness). As I have said that leaves ONE choice and that is TRUTH — the non-Beck kind.

      They confiscated a plastic cap gun (UNWRAPPED) i had bought my son for Christmas one year.

      I was allowed to leave the area and mail it to myself or to my destination,
      OR, I was allowed to throw them away (right next to the tsa agent)
      OR, I was allowed to not fly at all.

      The entire packages weighed some 8 ounces!

      The caps were not included, either.

      Absolutely no brains involved – mindless bots flexing their authority at every opportunity.

      They said that nothing that ‘resembles’ a gun could be allowed on board.

      I threw them away in the trash can 6 inches from the tsa agent.
      Wonder who took it home with them?

      If a photo resembles a gun would they prohibit a photo?
      What if there is a hyperlink to a gun photo on your computer?

      That‘s Janet Napolitano’s policies for you! She’s the one that suggested all of this crap, and TSA played along! I don‘t know how this doesn’t violate the constitutional law of unecessary search and sezure, but appearently the Obama administration can do whatever the hell it wants to do and doesn‘t have to answer to anyone because he’s “The President.” He is doing all of this on purpose. This specific deal with the TSA is making the American people feel resricted and scared. When he has fear in the eyes of the people, and when a crisis breaks out, people will think there is no hope and nothing they can do to correct the action. Thus, everyone is going to look to the governement to save them, and Obama will be more than happy to help, but with more laws and more freedoms taken away! Always look at the big picture and understand what they are trying to do. This is all being done on purpose, don‘t think it’s not! God bless you!

      Sorry folks, but in a free and equal society, rules and laws apply to EVERYONE. I find it quite hypocritical that you folks would wave around the Constitutions as the supreme law of the land while complaining that white people aren’t allowed to be exempt from suspicion, and that Muslims are not instantly targetting just for being Muslims.

      The thing about the Tea Party is that you folks don’t stand on principle–just the opposite. The Tea Party is defined by the fact that it has no consistent principles. You’re all for freedom of speech when you like what is being said; you’re all for freedom of religion when you like what is being preached; you‘re all for defending a person’s right against unreasonable search and seizure as long as they are white. You like to proclaim “We the People,” but you only really mean the people that agree with you.

      Can we criticize the TSA workers’ decisions here, perhaps. But to suggest that they just should have let the man go simply because he is not an arab is stupid and ignorant. In a free society, the laws apply to everyone. If this is confusing to you, go back and read the Constitution. But this time, pay attention.

Hmm.)

      It is easy to demonstrate that the TSA on the whole accomplishes nothing useful, and many true security experts have spoken out on this.

      Yet here we are, with the TSA continuing to grow in power, continuing to trample on our civil right of unimpeded interstate travel.
