TSA Pat-Down Leaves Bladder Cancer Patient Humiliated, Crying & Soaked in Urine

When I went to the airport today, I was put in the uncomfortable position of a so-called “naked” full-body scan. Today’s experience was very different from the last flight I made, nearly two weeks ago; at that time I only had to go through a magnetometer. Today there was no option — it was either the full-body scan, a humiliating pat-down or no flight. All passengers flying out of Washington, DC were subjected to the new procedures. So, like confused cattle, our uneasy line of air travelers was herded through the machine.
But my experience today was nothing compared to that of Thomas D. “Tom” Sawyer, a 61-year-old retired special education teacher from Lansing, Michigan. Sawyer was reportedly on his way to a wedding in Orlando when his medical condition caught the special attention of security.
As a survivor of bladder cancer, Sawyer wears his pants two sizes to large to accommodate medical equipment he must now wear. “I have to wear special clothes and in order to mount the [urostomy] bag I have to seal a wafer to my stomach and then attach the bag. If the seal is broken, urine can leak all over my body and clothes,” he recounted to MSNBC.
On Nov. 7, Sawyer said he went through the security checkpoint at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. “Evidently the scanner picked up on my urostomy bag, because I was chosen for a pat-down procedure,” he said. Because of his medical condition, Sawyer says he asked to be screened in private. “One officer looked at another, rolled his eyes and said that they really didn’t have any place to take me,” said Sawyer. “After I said again that I’d like privacy, they took me to an office.”
After he removed his belt for security, Sawyer’s over-sized pants fell down around his ankles. “I had to ask twice if it was OK to pull up my shorts… And every time I tried to tell them about my medical condition, they said they didn’t need to know about that.”
But when one TSA agent used his hand to pat-down Sawyer, his urostomy bag became dislodged and the urine began to pour down the front of him. “I tried to warn him that he would hit the bag and break the seal on my bag, but he ignored me. Sure enough, the seal was broken and urine started dribbling down my shirt and my leg and into my pants.”
What‘s more disturbing is the TSA agents’ response. The pat-down continued and they dismissed him without a second thought. “He told me I could go. They never apologized. They never offered to help. They acted like they hadn’t seen what happened,” he said.
Sawyer says he was humiliated and “couldn’t even speak.” He had to walk through the airport in his urine-soaked clothes, unable to clean himself up until he was onboard his plane. He plans to file a complaint with the TSA.
In response, one TSA spokesman said the agency encourages air travelers with medical conditions to consult the TSA website. However, the website clearly states that security officers “will not ask nor require you to remove your prosthetic device, cast, or support brace.”
Sawyer is not the only air passenger whose delicate medical condition has recently caught TSA officials breaking with official protocol. As we reported, one flight attendant — a breast cancer survivor — was forced to show security personnel a prosthetic breast.
“I am a good American and I want safety for all passengers as much as the next person,” Sawyer said. “But if this country is going to sacrifice treating people like human beings in the name of safety, then we have already lost the war.”

I think it was in Austin, TX where I saw an Army officer with a rifle at the top of a stairway. He was in the general area where non-passengers could be. I’d prefer to see that again.

After my experience, I am PRO profiling. Our government needs to stop their arrogance and enlist the help of Israel – they know what they are doing.

The scanner and pat downs (feel ups) should be used only on those they TRULY suspect might be a problem. This takes serious training in behavioral profiling. What’s going on is disgusting and does not solve the problem, it creates a new ones.

My son was born with a mid-line defect and may one day have a similar requirement. “Insensitivity” is defined these days with regards to peoples life choices. How about defining it with regard toward decent human respect and dignity.
Every time, I get “selected” for the scanner, I opt for the pat down. Because they should endure the inconvenience just as much as I will. Further, the pat-down lasts for a moment, the scanner image lasts indefinitely.
Then I ask the TSA employee, “How was I selected for further scrutiny?” and they will [quite often] say, “We select people at random in order to keep it fair and sample the population.” Or do we really believe children fit a threat profile?
Folks, random sampling is not “reasonable search and seizure.” Keep a record and file a complaint anywhere and everywhere. Begin with TSA, the airlines and your congressman’s office(s).
Defend the constitution, or be prepared to live without it. Know the 4th amendment. Know when it’s been violated too.
There’s something very wrong with this arrangement. Remember, if seems excessive, it probably is.
THERE ARE other technological and manual methods which will work without invading your privacy or assaulting your dignity and your rights (scanner image clarity OR the frisking)!
Otherwise, some suggest “crop-dusting.” ;^) You pick…lose your rights, or lose your couth. That’s gonna be a curious trend to report in the news!!
In other related news, the terrorist Ghailani got a slap on the wrist with 1 conviction out of 285 charges…and the one conviction was not even a “terrorist” charge…you think it’s going to get easier on the American public as we have to make up for the lack of deterrence…

The puffer chemical sniffers, which we already paid for, did adequately detect explosive oders.
So what the heck is this supposed to catch that a chemical sniifer machien (or dog) plus a metal detector can’t do?
Oh yea line lobbiest pockets who pushed the fed to buy these pornographic machines in the first place.
The last several terror plots have been on CARGO, and ALL of the incidents with persons in the cabins have been on FOREIGN flights coming INTO the us.
These scans and pat downs detect NOTHING that a metal detector, chemical sniffing and profiling couldn’t detect for cheaper.
Udderly rediculous. TSA has got to be the scum of the federal employees, although IRS investigators give them some compeitition.

I’m not flying anywhere, till they get this mess fixed and cleared up. There are very few terrorists out there. Most of the folks who are flying are within the US. I’d be asking ???’s like “check ID” where they live, where they are going, why are they going, when are they returning? If it is a one way ticket, WHY is it a one way ticket. Not racial profiling, but maybe that would be best also. A 30 year employee of the airlines, and a 60 Plus man with a urine bag is NOT a terror risk. Common sense makes a lot more sense here. What happened to that stuff? Common sense I mean.

The Jews in line for check-in at Auschwitz after their 5-day cattle car ride held their squirming children in their arms, still unaware of what awaited them, that is until they got to the head of the line where the children were ripped from their arms and taken away.
If we don’t put a stop to this nazi-type behavior of the government, we will be waltzed into a place we never in our wildest dreams thought we would ever be in…..
And it’s not just the TSA.

If more Americans grow disgusted by the TSA, and who could blame us if we did, will the air carriers bear the brunt of it and see their revenues shrink? Who but the business commuter will submit to this crap on a regular basis? Not only do I believe that we’re well within our rights to complain, I feel that we’re morally bound to complain, as this s*it violates every human being’s right to privacy and DOES, in my opinion, constitute “unreasonable search”; these TSA agents have no reason to suspect John Q. Public is a terrorist. This nation has been totally f*#%ed by “political correctness”- so very, very sad. Who was that just made the point that we’ve been “conquered from within”? So it would seem, my friend.

Posted on November 21, 2010 at 8:12amI always loved the trains more anyway – you are very relaxed and ready to go when you get to your destination and it relaxes you from all the fun you had on vacation or all the work you did on your business trip. The last few times I rode the train in the station was several officers walking around with dogs (either drug or bomb sniffing). I find that far more pleasant than the humiliating, invasive procedures at the airports. The last time I flew a women in front of me was near tears as they pulled her aside for extra screening. She was in her upper 50’s and was shaking as she was taken away. Her crime – they told her she changed her flight at the last minute.

The prison guards at the concentration camps were also lowly government workers just doing their jobs. The tank operator who mowed down a civilian in Tienamen Square (pardon the spelling) was also just doing his job!

Posted on November 21, 2010 at 7:38amI am in utter disbelief that this is America and as a citizen, when I fly to DC next week, I will lose all of my rights because I purchased an airline ticket. I’m a wreck over the thought of traveling through the airports. I have one other trip already booked for February. After that, I‘m not sure I’m up for flying any more. There must be something that can be done to stop these degrading invasions of our personal privacy and liberties. Are there no TSA agents that are even human? Do they not have any respect for other human beings? Of course, I keep asking why we cannot impeach Obama and force him out of office. Our world has gone mad.

Wrong is wrong and no one should be allowed to use “I was just doing my job” as a shield to hide behind.

There is no way I would take a job that would debase and humiliate my fellow human beings, that goes against the very core of our American constitutional protections, that is the same as what was done to human beings in the concentration camps. There is no amount of money that could make me perform these sick, dehumanizing acts.
Until we stop the PC crap, this will continue on into other realms of our lives, as well. There needs to be massive protests at several major airports in unison. Shut them down. Until Americans are willing to stand up, fight back, and rid our government of these progressive cult leaders, we are going to be subjected to this and much more. They will continue as long as we allow it.
When will we stand up, good men of America? Where are you?

Posted on November 22, 2010 at 10:33amThe problem with all of this is ALL THE POLITICIANS HAVE THEIR OWN AIRPLANES OR KNOW SOMEONE WHO DOES, so none of them are subjected to this. I love Glenn Beck and pray for him daily, BUT THIS TIME HE IS JUST PLAIN WRONG. A lot of these workers are CONTRACT WORKERS and are not actually subject to the laws of our government, even though in the job capacity, they are told they must comply. So, what happens if someone sues? Who will you sue? I see some nasty stuff coming and it won’t be from the left.

I am a frequent flyer and fly just about every week. I have no choice but to submit to these screening processes other than quit my job. I feel so violated and helpless. In my mind there is no differnce until the RINO’s are rooted out in total and the party name is changed to something befitting of the anti-gov movement. Thanks George Bush for your service and you are far better then Obama, but you were wrong and every time the GOP creates a government office, it doesn’t take long for it to matastisize into a malignant DFL cancer.

How long before they expand it to entrance to WalMart or the mall or the football game? This is only the start. The test to see if the American people can be brainwashed into doing it. Posted on November 21, 2010 at 10:56am@ oldtimer – one of the people making money from the scanners (among many I’m sure) is the former Homeland Security secretary Michael Chertoff. He recommended these machines through his consulting firm, and cashed in big when the TSA bought them.
I agree with what Glenn alluded to a while back on his program. Implement dogs instead of these scanners. However, that will never ever happen…. no one makes money on dogs.

Posted on November 21, 2010 at 1:46pmDoes anyone else but me think “Auschwitz mentality?” I often wondered why the Jews, Gypsies and others being rounded up and sent to the death camps weren’t able to rise up and rebel. It’s because it all started with very, very, very slow conditioning. I think we’re getting there very quickly. Frightening!! I say let’s adopt the Israeli mode of security in their airports. Even detection dogs can smell and detect secreted items that these machines and pat downs cannot.
I just came back from Romania. In London, even though I had gone through security in Budapest, I still had to go through another security check at Heathrow. I realized that some of the passengers on my same flight, were being sent through two different lines. The people in the line I happened to be directed to were being sent through the simple metal detector. The others were going through a physical pat down and “wanding.” I remember thinking to myself, “Wow! I‘m glad I’m not in THAT line.” It was right then that I realized, Omigosh! I have the “Auschwitz mentality.” I watched several mothers with their toddlers wiggling in their arms, businessmen and others in THAT line, while I was really pleased I wasn’t having to go through the pat down and scanning with the electronic wand. Since then, I’ve been replaying that scene in my mind, over and over again. There was not one thing I could have done to intervene and halt that process, one way or another.
Again I ask, is it just me that thinks “Auschwitz mentality?“ I was in the ”right” line. Sadly, other passengers were in the “wrong” line. In Auschwitz the “right” line led to showers; the “wrong” line led to the gas chamber. Now I ask, what can we do? I don’t know, perhaps I’m thinking too much.
Oh, by the way, in Europe, you don’t have to take off your shoes to go through security in airports. Small comfort, huh?

Mr. Sawyer has a medical condition that requires him to wear a urine bag. The TSA agents were told this but they patted him down anyway and in doing so they dislodgdd the urine bag and caused Mr. Sawyer to be soaked in his own urine. After the humiliating “patdown” the TSA agents released Mr. Sawyer to fly but offered no apologies for the Gestapo like security procedures they put him through. I wish that Mr. Sawyer could have emptied the urine bag over the heads of the TSA agents. All Americns should write their Congressional representatives and file a complaint against the NTB and the TSA. The new security measures recently adopted by the TSA shouldn’t rob citizens or anyone else of their dignity

I can’t get out of my bed so for periods of time I am forced to lay in my messes. I am used to it, infact not even really bothered by it any more. I do ask for clean linens though when they get a chance.

That makes much better sense. Actually, the lawsuit sounds much better. Get a website that will accomodate this. Get all American citizens who want a class action lawsuit and who flies frequently and have them contribute $5 towards the attorney fees and get it all the way to the supreme court. THIS CAN BE DONE, if you are angry enough. None of this has anything to do with security. It has everything to do with CONTROL OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE and WHAT IS COMING NEXT. I do not fly and will probably never fly, but just reading this stories makes me very, very angry. Handle it LEGALLY. Use their own tactics against them.
