Your next Transportation Security Administration screening experience might not be limited to the airport: Attending a presidential campaign event could mean the TSA taking a peek at your belongings.
Javier Manjarres of the Florida political blog Shark Tank posted a photo of two TSA agents he said were on hand for Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan’s event at The Villages retirement community in Florida on Saturday. Manjarres said he counted “no less than six TSA agents alongside the usual uniformed Secret Service detail” checking people’s bags, noting, “A big WTF is in order here.”
A TSA spokesman confirmed to TheBlaze the agency has provided such support for the last three presidential campaign cycles and for other Secret Service-guarded events.
“At the request of the U.S. Secret Service, TSA may provide additional security at certain events, including conventions, inaugurations, and other major events,” spokesman David Castelveter told TheBlaze in an email.
Castelveter would not say whether the agents present at the Ryan event were off-duty from local airports or who paid for their services.

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 7:14pmI attended a Mitt Romney campaign event at a coal mine in Beallsville, Oh a couple of weeks ago. We were bussed into the mine which happened to be in the middle of the woods. At the top of the road going into the mine, we were let off the bus and we had to walk the rest of the way down the road into the mine. At the intrance, there were several “check points”. As we passed through the line, we were run through a metal detector doorway, and were required to lay our purses or bags on the table, where “security” searched our bags. I inadvertantly had left a purse-size can of hair spray (about 4 in. high) in my purse. The guard loudly barked, “You can’t take that in there!”, as if I were about to board an airplane. He proceed to grab it out of my purse and throw it on the ground. I was angered by this seemingly small invasion of privacy just to see a presidential candidate. (I refuse to fly for this very reason of groping, xrays, etc). I resent being treated like a common criminal just in order to show up and support a candidate. It was not like this in ‘08 when we went to see John McCain, Sarah Palin speak. Things have very quickly gotten to the point that I feel like I am in a police state already.
Report Post »While I realize the need for protection, I do not appreciate being talked to like I am “two cents waiting for change” I will not return to another campaign event if this is the norm.

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 7:32pmTo continue:
While waiting for Romney to arrive, we were on the “rope” right in front of his podium, along with everyone one else who was lucky enough to be up front on the line. The whole time we were standing there, security paced back and forth like a pack of rabid dogs waiting to attack. When Mitt Romney came down from the stage and walked the line to shake hands, security came in front of him snarling, “TAKE YOUR HANDS OUT OF YOUR POCKETS, DON’T PUT YOUR HANDS IN YOUR POCKETS, NO SUDDEN MOVES, PUT THAT INK PEN AWAY!. I was a nervous wreck by the time I left. We spent a lot of money to drive over there, get a hotel room, gas, food, etc. If this is what it has come to, I won’t be doing that again. It truely is a shame that our country has lost so much that we used to take for granted. It is a sad day, indeed.

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 7:43pm@justangry: It wasn’t Romney. It was just security. Romney was very warm and friendly. We had the good fortune of stumbling upon the Romney bus in a parking lot the night before. We were able to meet Jerry, the driver, and Zachary, a consultant. They spoke with us for about a half hour and we were able to take pictures, etc. We run into some of them again at the hotel and again after the rally at a restaurant. They were very friendly and approachable at all times. Jerry, the driver, related that he had driven bus for Romney for over a year and had previoulsly driven for 3 other primary candidates, whom I won’t mention. Jerry said Romney is a humble and kind man. He said you would never know Romney had two nickles to rub together and treats everyone with respect and kindness.
I would love to meet Congressman Paul. I believe he is a great patriot and hero for this generation. I wish the media would not treat him so poorly. He has served his country with dignity and is fearless. I would cast a vote for him were he the nominee. But I have to cast a vote for the one who is NOT A COMMUNIST. I hope you will too, so that we can salvage a little of what’s left of this country. Please don’t lose the war just to win one battle. Look at how much Ron Paul has been able to accomplish and the minds he has been able to reach. Don’t let that be in vain.

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 11:01pmI can only get behind the GOP if their platform includes restoring our rights. I’d be ecstatic if that were to happen, because I despise Obama’s policies as much as anyone here. I‘m not naive to think he’s not a Marxist, it‘s just I’m not sure fascism is a better alternative. I’d like to see him tone down his hawkish rhetoric too, but will compomise on everything except civil liberties. I’m more than likely going to sit this one out.

Posted on August 24, 2012 at 1:05am@justangry:
I would like the same. They did put “auditing the fed” in the platform. It’s a major step in the right direction. If Obama wins, EVERYTHING is lost. There will be no more rights, period. And no more time to fight. At least with Romney, there will be a path to future discussion and more time to win the minds of more people. With an Obama vote, ALL IS LOST. Don’t give up so easily. It takes time to shift opinion and elect those who would make a difference. I don‘t agree with all of Ron Paul’s ideas, but would vote for him any day over Obama, if that was my choice. The media controls these things and they want nothing more than for you to stay home and not vote. In fact, they are counting on it. Just as they unions are urging the coal miners to stay home and not vote. They know exactly what they are doing. Vote for Romney. Live to fight another day. Hold his feet to the fire. The country is turning, slowly, This is our ownly chance to remove the tyrant. Vote with us and have the freedom to work for more change in the future. I don’t agree with everything Romney, but I can‘t sit it out and I won’t vote for Obama. I would vote for that man in prison first. lol

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 7:08pmHow does a Presidential campaign fit within the Transportation portion of TSA’s mission? This agency has no business acting as security in any non-transportation venue, whether a campaign appearance or a sporting event. This agency is completely out of control and its personnel and management need to made accountable and punished for this overreach.
Is TSA now a National police force, like the German Stasi? Anyone attending these events should tell the TSA goon to get lost and defy them to do anything about it.

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 7:03pmI went to the Paul Ryan rally here in Raleigh yesterday and the TSA was handling security on arrival. Like going through an airport security checkpoint. Secret service had the interior, exterior and security during and after the rally. Just another way for Obammy to keep his union buddies placated.
On the Ryan rally, tons of people there. But our local liberal rag “the News and Observer” failed to put in the article on the rally how many attended. I visually estimated 3000. Anybody know for sure? Biden got only 600-750 in Durham.

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 6:30pmThis could be a good thing.
There are so many people going to the events that the normal Secret Service who are protecting Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan, can not check everyone like they normal could and slowing down the long lines. So the only people that the SS know to call as they are “officially trained” too the SS standards in checks are the TSA. They can not get the local cops to do the checks as they are not sure they are trained as the SS would have them.
Having the SS need the help is better then having them twiddle their thumbs as they do no checks as no people show up to see Romney/Ryan like the people on the Obama detail end up doing.

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 8:21pm@simpletruths:
Perhaps the “wrath of God”, as you put it, is aimed directly at the ones who would do harm to one of his servants. This would not be the first time wind was used to defeat an enemy of this country. Please read the opening pages of “The Covenant” by Timothy Ballard, wherein he describes the Battle of Long Island and how George Washington and his “army” of farmers and untrained “soldiers” were able to defeat a 30,000 man trained army and the powerful British Navy. “Wind” is involved. And fog. Mix that with Divine Providence and the faith of a humble servant of God, and you have an unbeatable force.
Ever since I first heard about the hurricane, i.e., winds that were headed toward Tampa, I have been certain that the Hand Of Providence is upon Mitt Romney and no harm will come to him. God has sent the winds for a purpose. Only time will tell what purpose that is. HE has a purpose in everything. I’m just positive Mitt Romney understands The Covenant, as well. That does not bode well for the enemy.
