TSA Workers Admit to Stealing Thousands From Passengers

They’re supposed to keep airline passengers safe. But two TSA screeners in New Jersey did just the opposite, say Justice Department officials, and facilitated a crime ring that cheated screened passengers at Newark Liberty International Airport out of between $10,000 and $30,000.

According to a Justice Department release, Michael Arato, a 41-year-old TSA supervisor, admitted yesterday he accepted bribes and kickbacks from an employee who stole money regularly from passengers during security screenings. WNYW explains how the process worked:

Prosecutors say Arato permitted a worker he supervised to steal between $10,000 and $30,000 in cash from travelers’ bags over a 13-month period. In exchange, the subordinate would give a portion of the money to Arato. The subordinate, who was not named, cooperated with the federal investigation that led to Arato’s arrest in October.

Surveillance cameras caught Arato accepting over $3,000 in bribes during a single three-week period.

He pleaded guilty to the charges against him and faces 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. He will be sentenced on May 24.

    Wait a minute.

The subordinate was not named? The one who did the actual theft was not named? I smell immunity for testimony. So we let the actual thief go to bust the guy who looked the other way?

Isn’t that like letting the bank robber go to send the get away-driver to prison?

Is this really the best we can do?

Not to play devil’s advocate- ha- but I’ve always believed that once you have to start calling names, you’ve already lost the fight. I’ve been brought up to believe in God and his unfailing Grace, and one thing he tells us to love each other. Instead of bashing on Obama and Napalitano and the like, pray for them to come to their senses and realize what they’re doing to the country. I know, it’s really, really hard to not call them names, and to curse them. I slip up and do it all the time. But take heart- those who work against God or his people are punished. Just remember the city of Sodom. Those that are good and honest will be spared, and the rest will be rained upon with cleansing, holy wrath. So just keep your faith, and trust in God. :)

It just happened to me at an airport. I was forced to take off my watch and it was not there after I was grabbed for a pat-down. I made them look for it and they said it was not around and was I sure I did not put in my bag. I luckily got there early for a flight and I told then I would not leave until I got the watch back. After about 20 minutes someone came out with it and claimed it had been put on top of the xray machine. (ironically the person came back from a back office and not from the xray machine). It seemed like a scam at the time but let it go. Now I see what was going on.

Or is it shame on all of us? We, all of us, let the Federal Government get this big. Now, it’s completely out of control. They ignore their Constitutional duties, like border security and the security of our money and sound fiscal/monetary policy, while at the same time passing laws and creating regulations that overstep and outright trample on our individual rights more and more every day. We have, in turn, continued to elect Representatives, Senators and Presidents from both Parties that not only let it happen they encourage it.

Americans have allowed themselves to believe that the Government can fix problems or create jobs or make us safe because the officials make pretty speeches and make important sounding announcements that they can and will do so. No, Grandma, with all due respect, I think we need to step up and take the majority of the blame. When one finds themself in an unwanted “hole” the first step is to stop digging. It’s high time we demanded a real difference in our Government. Real change; not some watered down 10 year, slow death of a plan. The plan for that difference is clearly laid out in the Constitution.

After seeing clips on TV for years of airport employees going through luggage and taking what they want, I’ve hated having to fly. So, I’d get the heavy plastic bags (dept. store variety) and put each outfit in the bag and tape it shut. So all the luggage was full of individual bags of clothes, shoes, underwear, etc. Kinda hard to look through each bag on limited time. My mantra is: if I can drive, take bus or train, I won’t go. The Unions would in the future fight tooth and nail to keep him on the payroll even if he goes to jail. Nothing, I mean nothing is a fireable offence to a union. Any business that allows a Union to take over a company’s workers might as well just hand the business over to them. I have worked for union business and they don’t do a thing for the employee, except stop bad employees from being fired. You can’t help your fellow employees and you HAVE TO pay your dues. If you don’t then you have to be fired. That is the only offence you can be fired for and it doesn’t matter how hard you work or how dedicated to your employer. You miss paying your dues or refuse to have withdrawn out of your paycheck then you are gone. I quit a union job and the Union tried to bill me for the dues for months afterwards. They sent me threatening letters and told me that I would not be able to ever work in a Union place again if I didn’t pay the dues that were due after I left the employment. It went on for months. If I went to work at a union place I would owe now years of union dues now.

These people are dispicable the TSA people who stole. Now they will be allowed to do this because the Union will be the ones getting the cut.

…and meanwhile we should just put the remaining crimes on the shelf…..the forced radiation scans, naked pictures, humiliation from groping, etc.
Something is not right, if we allow ourselves to be victimized, all under the guise of keeping ourselves safe!!

The unions are responsible for 99% of the problems we have in this country right now. Want to help neuter them? Then pass this along to all you come in contact with. PLEASE!!! And keep in mind, the Beck referred to in this posting is NOT Glenn Beck.
A little known law that ALL unions are supposed to make their members aware of is called Beck’s Law. But the unions DO NOT tell their members. Why? Keep reading. The Supreme Court’s Beck Decision Recognizes Individual Worker Rights: In 1989, the U. S. Supreme Court established what are now known as “Beck rights” in the landmark decision Communication Workers v. Beck, Beck rights dictate that workers cannot be forced under union contracts to pay any dues or fees beyond those necessary for the performance of the union’s employee representation duties. In other words, any worker who objects to his union’s use of his dues money for purposes not directly related to collective bargaining is entitled to a refund of that portion of his dues. Beck rights are a triumph of individual rights over the political weight of union leaders. Workers in labor unions DO NOT HAVE TO PARTICIPATE IN THEIR UNION BOSSES POLITICAL ACTIONS. All the member needs to do is notify the union they do not want their dues used for anything other than those directly related to collective bargaining, they will get a refund of their dues money. Look here for more information: http://www.mackinac.org/article.aspx?ID=1403
If I can get enough people to pass this around, I truly believe it will make a huge dent in the labor unions ability fund anything political. Unions were meant to represent their members, not political action committees. Get the unions OUT of politics!

amen free2bme1961, I want the TSA disbanded and funding cut NOW.
at the very least allow a choice flight A with same old checks as before 911
and flight B for the soccer moms with full scans for every passenger.
They can even charge 10% more for flight A’s.
I bet soon they flight b’s would go away.

How long before the terrorist are able to bribe these guys? They don’t seem to care about their own countrymen, it’s not beyond the realm of possibility for them to take a large bribe from a terror group to slip a bomb or guns into baggage.

Again what I hear is the commenter on this board believing that ALL unions are the same.. they are NOT.. GOVERNMENT unions get away with MUCH more.. unions for the PRIVATE sector do not.. Private sector unions are like red headed step children to the unions.. STEALING is an automatic dismissal.. caught on tape.. the union rep will come in but won’t protect you.. as well as it should be.. it‘s all tied to the contracts and private companies WON’T put up with the garbage GOVERNMENT will..

And let me guess – when the people who had their money stolen complained to the airport officials – they were told that they are not responsible for missing items. I hope that every single person who had money stolen from them in this process sues the airport/federal govenment., It will be the only way that the airport will work out a more theft-proof system.
