Tsunami Warning Issued as 7.9 Magnitude Quake Hits Japan

Editor’s note: The quake has now been set at a magnitude of 8.9.

TOKYO (AP) – Japan was struck by a magnitude 7.9 earthquake off its northeastern coast Friday, shaking buildings in Tokyo for several minutes and prompting a tsunami warning.
Japan’s meteorological agency warned that a tsunami as high as 20 feet (6 meters) could strike the coast near Miyagi prefecture, closest to the epicenter. Smaller tsunamis of up to 50 centimeters reached some coastal communities, the agency said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said a tsunami warning was in effect for Japan, Russia, Marcus Island and the Northern Marianas. A tsunami watch has been issued for Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and U.S. state of Hawaii.

The quake struck at 2:46 p.m. at a depth of 10 kilometers, about 80 miles (125 kilometers) off the eastern coast, the meteorological agency said. The area is 240 miles (380 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo.

In downtown Tokyo, large buildings shook violently and workers poured into the street for safety. TV footage showed a large building on fire and bellowing smoke in the Odaiba district of Tokyo.

Footage on national broadcaster NHK from their Sendai office showed employees stumbling around and books and papers crashing from desks.

Police and coast guard officials said they were assessing possible damage from the quake.

Several quakes had hit the same region in recent days, including a 7.3 magnitude one on Wednesday.

      Good question.

Japan has 200% GDP debt, we have 100% GDP debt. We have a lot more less debt, so we can afford to use all that less debt and borrow more (print money) to help out.

Isn’t it great that we are in such a strong position?

This looks like it is a devastating earthquake in Japan. I’m watching it on Fox News Alert right now and there are bridges out and homes with the people in them are floating on rushing water.

People are on tops of buildings needing to be saved waving white rags and such. This is awful. Cars are floating. Wow! It’s terrible!

I have been watching the news coverage on Fox and I am disappointed by their coverage. The talking head could not keep up with the video being shown and it got very confusing to watch and listen at the same time. This is my very first criticism of Fox News coverage so it’s not a big complaint, more like an observation.

It is one of the more intense size of quakes; the one that happened in, I think 2004 just before the christmas holiday in Indonesia was a 9.6. Yahoo search the San Francisco quake of 1906 and the Kobe, Japan quake to have an idea of what can happen.

It is the duration of the quake, the type of geology (sand, rock, etc) in the area, and how well all of the structures in the area are that contributes to how devastating they are.

As noted, it’s now 8.8… very big.

From the video I saw of the wave, it’s not a stretch to think it could reach Hawaii or the west coast.

It‘s open water and it’s not about the distance.. it’s about the type of quake and the amount of water displaced.

Most of the people in Japan do not agree with us with regards to religion and we pray for their health and safety, just as we do all those who are not actively attacking us. Do not make the suffering of others in a natural disaster into a political point. It is beyond shameful.

      @templar knight and psychosis

This is just a natural occurrence of plate tectonics, this is not the vengeance of the earth or of God and such notions show a complete lack of understanding of the universe at large and even the nature of God. Now if suddenly the universe dissolves into nothing, ok, act of God, or Lightning streaks across a cloudless sky and it has nothing to do with some comet hitting the planet, I’m with you on that Templar, but this is not that. What we should do is pray that God keeps these people safe.

God, keep these people safe and for all those in coastal towns, may they stay warm, dry, and their families remain sheltered through this. Hopefully this is the last one and they will be experiencing aftershocks only.

This is one reason why Glenn has preached and preached to be ready as anything can happen. I heard a Fox news reporter on maternity leave in Hawaii say they are being told to prepare but the island she is staying on in total only has 5 days worth of food… for the entire population.. 5 days!!!

Start prepping guys anything can happen!
