Tucson Tea Party Chair Warned to ‘Stay Away From Public Places’

Though he says he has been “very impressed” with the way President Obama has steered the nation through the aftermath of last Saturday’s shooting, Tucson tea party leader Trent Humphries was not in attendance for Obama‘s remarks at Wednesday evening’s memorial rally.

Humphries has been instructed by police to “stay away from public places” after he and his family received numerous threats from people who seem to hold him and his organization responsible for Jared Lee Loughner’s shooting rampage.

“We got a not-so-veiled threat,” Humphries told TPM. “The Sheriff’s deputies told me to stay away from public places.”

“We had people say, ‘too bad it wasn’t your family that was killed,’” Humphries explained. “‘The blood of that little girl on your hands.’”

But it was one call in particular that had Humphries afraid for his family’s safety Wednesday. “It was something like ‘we hate you and we’re going to stand against you and we’re going to use our First and Second Amendment rights to stop you,’” he said.

Humphries said this week‘s threats are not the only ones he’s received since founding the Tucson tea party in 2009. During the 2010 midterm election campaign season, his family was force to switch to an unlisted phone number.

One of Saturday‘s victims was Humphries’ neighbor.

And though he believes most threats wouldn’t ultimately be carried out, “I have a wife and kids,” he said, agreeing with law enforcement authorities that the safest place for his family right now would be out of public sight.

The UK‘s Guardian interviewed Humphries shortly after last Saturday’s shooting to ask him what role (if any) he felt the tea party played in the shooting. Here’s what he had to say:

    The Progressive-Left, in true form, are using this tragic event to shut up their opposition. Their true colors are coming out. This is who they are.

    For this UK Guardian guy to feed into their frenzy is an indication that they’re getting on the blame-game bandwagon, which is not surprising, coming from the Guardian.

    To even suggest that this is the fault of the Tea Party is absolutely beyond the pale. The Tea Party are law-abiding people who want to restore the Constitution and the Republic. They stand for limited government and freedom.

    This senseless act of violence is the sole responsibility of the crazy gunman himself, irregardless of his political leanings, which, in this case, was more toward the Left since a few of his favorite books were Mein Kampf and the Communist Manifesto and Loughner had intimated that he was unhappy that Rep. Giffords has voted against Pelosi. This gunman’s ramblings were incoherent and he had been kicked out of school, rejected by the military, and he had made threats to law enforcement.

    Does that sound anything like a Tea Partier or any conservative? I don’t think so.

    This is more of the same of the Progressive-Left using a tragic event to further their partisan agenda of never letting a crisis go to waste. It is partisan politics at it’s worst!

    This is precisely why Obama has come to be known as the Divider-in-Chief. He could choose to put an end to it but he chooses to feed into it for partisan gain, which is to shut his opposition up!

    Let’s end this blame-game now, and let’s hold the gunman responsible for his horrific act of violence because he is the one who pulled the trigger.

    Don’t take this the wrong way…’cause after my service in the military the last thing I ever want to see is violence. That said…I find it a little funny when liberal/progressives threaten conservatives and the right.       It’s OK to be aggressive with those who wish to take your unalienable rights and enslave you. The Progressives in government are violating their oath to the Constitution, and the danger for the People in allowing that to happen is a “climate” of repression which has often in history lead to government abuses of power.

      Let me see if I am understanding these threads, starting with the original video.

      It would seem the interviewer assumes, and fully asserts, the tea party has to have some culpability for the Saturday tragedy. The assumed argument appears to go something like, ‘Well since the tea party favors the Constitution, which has the Second Amendment, and a gun was used, the whole tea party is certainly partially, or equally guilty, as the triggerman.’ Which makes about as much sense as, ‘Well since the triggerman was a drug users and liberals are known for drugs and their legalization, the liberals, a matter of fact, any one who has ever abused drugs, is equally guilty.’ These are petty days full of petty arguments.

      Then here, meaning above, we get a burst of twists, equally as petty. Palin obviously strikes great fear. If she was 10 times the women some make her out to be, she would still be a petty nobody, of no concern. So, why so much rant over someone you hold in such low esteem… unless you fear, your assessment is all wrong? Either lock her up for some crime, or give her as much as you hope we give you. Those who strive so hard to spew and insight so much hatred, are a vast sea of hypocritical nonsense. I certainly do not expect anyone to give up their child-like bantering. Please, please, do keep it up. I certainly do not expect anyone to suddenly turn to the substantive concerns of today, let alone tomorrow.

      I for one do not think this latest tragedy will make this Nation turn for the worse. I certainly do not fear more… and believe me, at times speaking my First Amendment mind on sites like this has wrenched my guts, often, over the last couple of years. No, greater civility will prevail, by all, from all and for all. But it will not emerge overnight. Greater substance, truer substance will take hold. First, remember we do have a new House which has already made a historical start. There is no end in sight as to what they will do. Second, do not visit the pumps. Turn your eyes away from the signs that appear to know unending height. Change, change and change again marches upward, oh tanks. Most of us know who has held that hope the longest. Higher prices at the pump surely must be bringing joy to one political prophet. Third, Gabby will likely recover, she will likely visit and be perplexed over the talk, while she slept and healed. Someday, she will speak her mind again. We might all wish to give a cheer. But if Gabby, proves to be Gabby, her wrath over these days may humble this nation as never before. A monster put a bullet through her head, but after these days get processed through her head, her condemnations of those who throw silly and false blame in pretense of her behalf, may be monstrous.       Wasn’t it the president who told his most ardent supporters, folks like SEIU, AFL-CIO, ACORN, NBP, etc,, if they punch us, punch them back twice, if they bring a knife, bring a gun….). As I recall, it was the very day, some SEIU thugs attacked a man selling flags outside a townhall meeting.

      And from what the sherriff of Pima county has said, I‘m surprised the deputies didn’t arrest the Tea Party chair! Having the chair stay away from public places is EXACTLY what the Progressives want. And we now have the sheriff’s deputies enforcing it. It is their intent to shut down any dialog that is not to script.

      Poor Gabrielle Giffords, I hope she never finds out how despicable a situation her sheriff has caused in her great city. If he had never opened his mouth with his “uneducated opinion” and had just stuck to the facts in the case, this would not be the nightmare it has become. If anyone is shot or hurt it should fall squarely on his shoulders. He needs to be removed from office, not because he speaks against the Tea Party, but because he is a law enforcement officer who is putting lives in danger.

There are adults and kids everywhere who wish(ed) they had a mom like her, lived in a great state like Alaska with its beauty and opportunities, and could go on the adventures (tv or not) her children experience. Instead many are grow up without a dad, and a mom who is stretched to the limit because she is the only bread winner. Children deserve better than that and if you cared, truly cared, about this country and its citizens, you would want a representative who encourages prosperity, family and the love of country.
