Turns Out Ed Schultz Has Been Told What to Do

We told you on Tuesday that Ed Schultz unequivocally said recently he has “not been instructed to tone it down.” Turns out, he has.
On his radio show Thursday, an e-mailer asked Schultz what happened to his “Psycho Talk” segment — the one that mimicked Keith Olbermann’s “World’s Worst” — since he moved from the 6 pm time slot on MSNBC to the 10 pm one. Schultz’s response went something like that 1983 Donna Summers song “She Works Hard for the Money” mixed with lamentations about being an oppressed worker:
Schultz assured his listeners on January 11 that “as long as they open their mouths over there on the right,” the segment would not disappear. It only took 17 days for him to be proven wrong.
NewsBusters writer Jack Coleman makes an interesting observation:
Let me see if I have this straight — liberals demanded more civility in media after they blamed a “climate of hate” for inciting a deranged gunman in Tucson. This was followed in short order by Olbermann discontinuing his “Worst Persons in the World” two-minute hate, Olbermann abruptly leaving MSNBNC, and MSNBC putting “Psycho Talk” under sedation.
In other words, the only media casualties in the post-Tucson era of civility, at least to date, are Olbermann and “Psycho Talk.”

Posted on January 28, 2011 at 1:35pmWhat Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh does is a totally different thing than the HATE and venom Shultz, Maddow, Olberman, and Matthews spit out. They just drip of HATE and personal attacks. Glenn teaches, more than anything. He backs up what he is teaching with facts and gives you the chance to prove him wrong. Even the Whitehouse apparently can’t prove him wrong, because that red phone hasn’t rang yet with a call from them. Glenn teaches for us to work on ourselves, not to lash out at others. So there is just no comparison. As for RUSH, well hey, they have tried to YEARS to get rid of Rush. I am surprised someone hasn’t taken him out as bad as they all hate him, but we all know that Rush is 99% right all the time! He says so…lol!

I’ve said it repeatedly COMCAST is in business to make money and make something of its newly acquired news division. We can assume they want to knock Fox off its #1 perch and that wont happen with the PMSNBC lineup carrying on like they do. Personal attacks, self admitted socialists, and all the other carrying on over there will not sit with their new bosses.

Posted on January 28, 2011 at 1:25pmEd and Keith apparently forgot to learn what political stripes their new masters wear. The Roberts family, who control Comcast and now own NBC and MSNBC, are neo-conservatives who give heavily to the GOP. For those that only worry about the government quashing speech, you’d better pay attention to what a few large companies, that now have oligopolistic power over the nation’s public trust of airwaves, cellular networks and internet bandwidth, can do to quash a point of view. Olbermann had good ratings but was pushed out anyway. That conservatives did not like his viewpoint should not obscure the fact that quashing diversity in speech is not good for a democracy, whether it is a powerful government or power group of multinationals that engages in it. That they left the less incendiary but also less profitable voices alone clearly highlights that this was not about the market or the viewers voting with their feet. This was a highly undemocratic turn of events. And it should worry all of us. Hopefully, a few smart conservatives, who care about free and diverse speech, will recognize that sometimes the political enemy of my political enemy is not my friend–and no friend of a democratic America.

You just don’t get it that the vast majority of the American people dismiss Progressive hate-speech. And that is all that you can say about Olbermann, Schultz, Mathews, and Maddow. They absolutely HATE Conservatives. If the owners of Comcast are “neo-Conservative” as you say, they would fire every single anchor and contibuter on that pathetic network. Get a grip and quit whining like a little schoolgirl…..Americans know hate-speech when they hear it…..and they hear it predominately from the Progressive left.

Posted on January 28, 2011 at 2:37pmHillbilly, I think you are missing my point. Just because Google and Coca-Cola and Microsoft earn ridiculously outsized returns does not mean that there isn’t a place in the portfolio for Alcoa and Ford and Kroger. Similarly, just because a smaller group of people like to hear left-leaning, partisan commentary over right-ring, partisan commentary doesn‘t mean that there isn’t a proper market and place for the former as well. Olbermann’s ratings were sufficient to justify his time on the air, and his ratings were far better than the others that remain on the nightly MSNBC lineup, so if you are right and this was just a business decision then why did they throw out the most profitable piece but keep the foundering ones? Also, if you think that a democracy functions best when it only hears on ideology or viewpoint, since that one is the one adhered to by the majority of citizens, then you would be asking for conservative talk show guys to be fired as well. Brian Williams and the supposedly biased MSM on broadcast TV gets larger audiences than Beck or O’Reilly, if I’m not mistaken. Heck, you should replace all of them with more reality television shows, since they get higher ratings too. The point is that diversity of opinion, even if some of the opinions are held by a minority of citizens, is better for democracy than just one view. Media conglomerates think like you do because they do not care about democracy, just ratings, which drive quarterly results and stock option payouts. But this case is even more worrying since it clearly was driven by something beyond ratings and profitability. And if it was about seeking to quash a particularly effective critic of the GOP, then Roberts’ influence on Keith taking the axe should worry everyone–even those that hate listening to Keith. As my conservative buddy in the Marine likes to tell me, “I disagree with your every word, but I’d gladly die defending your right to say it.” My friend would punch Mr. Roberts in the nose (and worse) if he thought the Comcast owner was quashing left-leaning speech. Got it?

“Media conglomerates think like you do because they do not care about democracy, just ratings, which drive quarterly results and stock option payouts.”
First, we are a Republic, not a Democracy.
Second, media IS for profit, just like health care – nobody should be expected to work for free. We still have the right to freedom of speech if no one wants to listen to us. If you want to say something, then say it; And if people want to listen to you, then your message will spread.
But since we’re all free to listen to whatever we want, you‘re not gonig to force me to listen to something if I don’t want to listen to it. I’ll change the channel, or just speak to someone. And try to understand that my position can’t be anti-multiple-view-points because you can hear and say multiple view points with or without a profit motive; And besides that, as was said above, all work that is done should typically be done to increase wealth – otherwise the work is unsustainable.
Besides, the more people have the freedom to create wealth, the more innovative they’ll become to create it, the lower the prices to buy it will become so that less wealthy people can afford it, the more the rich will be willing to spend that wealth (paying workers to build yachts, homes, gadgets, etc).
And don’t let the government fool you with regard to the Internet: They took the brightest from among the PRIVATE SECTOR citizenry to do the government work which lead to the technology of the Internet, and the PRIVATE SECTOR funded them.

TexasCommonSense
Posted on January 29, 2011 at 11:04amrealindependent, is that the point? FoxNews gets better ratings because they’re on more TVs. That’s because more people choose to turn on FoxNews on their TV. If that‘s not what you’re saying, then I say, MSNBC has the same number of TVs in America available to it as FoxNews. I don’t know of any major carries that carry FoxNews and does not MSNBC.
As for liberal talk radio, they have just as many frequencies available in the AM and FM range as the conservative shows. They could easily compete. They just don’t have a large enough audience.
