Turns Out Obama‘s Story About His Mother’s Healthcare Struggle Is Inaccurate

A new book by New York Times reporter Janny Scott sheds new light on the life of Barack Obama’s mother, Ann Dunham, including her final years. Scott found while assembling information for “A Singular Woman: The Untold Story of Barack Obama’s Mother,” that Dunham in fact did have health coverage for her ovarian cancer, based off Dunham’s own past correspondence. Washington Examiner’s Byron York:
“Dunham decided to stay in Jakarta, where she underwent an appendectomy. But the pain did not go away, and Dunham feared, correctly, that she was terribly ill. In January 1995 she left Indonesia to go home to Honolulu, where she was diagnosed with advanced uterine and ovarian cancer. She began a regime of surgery and chemotherapy.
That is the time during which Obama says his mother battled insurance companies to cover her illness. But Scott, who had access to Dunham’s correspondence from the time, reveals that Dunham unquestionably had health coverage. ‘Ann’s compensation for her job in Jakarta had included health insurance, which covered most of the costs of her medical treatment,’ Scott writes. ‘Once she was back in Hawaii, the hospital billed her insurance company directly, leaving Ann to pay only the deductible and any uncovered expenses, which, she said, came to several hundred dollars a month.”
Often in his 2008 campaign and throughout his push for national healthcare reform, Barack Obama retold a compelling story of his mother’s struggle against non-budging insurance companies for care in the final years of her life before the cancer over took her.
“‘I remember in the last month of her life, she wasn’t thinking about how to get well, she wasn’t thinking about coming to terms with her own mortality, she was thinking about whether or not insurance was going to cover the medical bills and whether our family would be bankrupt as a consequence,’ Obama said in September 2007.
‘She was in her hospital room looking at insurance forms because the insurance company said that maybe she had a pre-existing condition and maybe they wouldn’t have to reimburse her for her medical bills,’ Obama added in January 2008.”
The seemingly heartfelt pitch by Obama now appears to have glossed over many of the facts. Scott’s book reveals that Dunham was compensated for most of her treatment aside from one denied claim in August 1995. Scott writes that Dunham was denied coverage by CIGNA for a separate claim under her employer’s disability insurance policy, where she wanted to be compensated for medical costs as well as her living expenses. Scott writes that Obama‘s tale of his mother’s battle with insurance companies was “abbreviated,” for the fact that Ann Dunham did indeed have health insurance pay for her treatment:
“Though he(Obama) often suggested that she was denied health coverage because of a pre-existing condition, it appears from her correspondence that she was only denied disability coverage’”

“My Mother, who was self-employed, didn’t have reliable healthcare, and she died of ovarian cancer. There probably is nothing modern medicine could have done about that, it was caught late and thats a hard cancer to diagnose. I do remember the last six months of her life, insurance companies threatening that they would not reimburse her for her costs. And her having to be on the phone in the hospital argueing with insurance companies when what she should have been doing is spending time with her family.”
Scott’s investigation however shows that in 1994 Dunham took a job with an American company called Development Alternatives, which had a contract with the Indonesian State Ministry for the Role of Women. Dunham returned to Jakarta to work where Scott reports the job provided Dunham with health insurance, a housing allowance, and a car.
Dunham was extremely ill, and her frustrations in the final year of her life are not for you or I to judge. However revelations in Scott’s new book suggest many personal statements made by the President in his campaign and national healthcare reform pitch to be inaccurate.

Posted on July 12, 2011 at 3:21pmObama’s mother did not understand what insurance was – insurance is a way to socialize the cost of health care, and since she was not the only one who had medical problems, payments from the insurance company had to be rationed; And pre-existing conditions SHOULD be a basis for rationing, since those are the policy holders who would tend to drain the pool of money the fastest.
Obama’s mother, as well as many today, were/are victims of increased socialization of health care and regulations.
Health care is not a right – doctors don’t go to work to just give away their services – and only the free market can drive down health care costs, and therefore also health insurance costs.

Did they try to wiggle out of the claim? Who knows. But the bottom line – they paid.
His mother’s death was tragic, but no more tragic than any other adult American that died that year from cancer. However, he used her, just like he is willing to use anyone else, to further his own cause, which is his rage against the U.S. Now we have the sunshine of truth on that little corner of deceit. Onward! 2012 gets closer every day.

Read the above story again and tell me what exactly did Obama lie about? In every one of your “scandalous” clips of Obama talking about his mother’s struggles he always says that she had health care. She only struggled with forms and wondering about reimbursement and having to pay bills beyond her health insurance. That is a common story. Way to try to smear a dead woman in order to validate an opinion that you would never change in the first place.
Does anyone have a dying mother out there that you would like me to write a book about? I am sure I would be able to capture the fears and worries of your dying mother EXACTLY by examining her health insurance records. I don‘t need to talk to her or care what you might have say about you dying mom’s state of mind, the insurance forms will tell me everything she is and worrying about while dying slowly in a hospital.

Don’t be to convinced, remember he can executive order ANYTHING not to be paid; I have a family member career military, when BO threatened last time that if the debt ceiling wasn‘t lifted the military wouldn’t be paid, by the time it was temporarily lifted, the letter had already gone out to military personnell, they might not be paid. He instructed the military pay group, (sorry I‘m civilian don’t know it’s name.) to only pay for 3 weeks service that month. My family member‘s wife said that’s all they got, and he has a position on the base which included access to all the bases pay records, NOBODY ON THEIR BASE WAS PAID FOR THE 4TH WEEK OF THAT MONTH, A NOTE SAID IT WOULD BE MADE UP SOMEDAY, DIDN’T KNOW WHEN!

He said that his mother told him she was worried because the insurance company had told her she may have a pre-existing condition. Those are two very different things.
He also said that during the last month of her life she spent a lot of time on the phone with the insurance company over bills. That often happens regardless of whether your insurance covers your claims or not.
This article claims that Obama was lying by saying that his mother had to battle insurance companies. The fact that the insurance company may have ended up paying for her care does not negate the fact that she had to battle to get them to pay. Secondly, he plainly says she was self employed. She was not self employed. He says she did not have access to quality healthcare. She did have access to quality healthcare.
Third, access to healthcare and access to insurance are two totally different things, as those of who live on the side of the ideogical spectrum called “the real world”, readily recognize. In point of fact, suppression of the ability of healthcare providers to pass costs along to consumers leads in all cases to healthcare rationing. This is basic economics. If you are really sick, and need the best, you come to the United States. Everyone knows this.
Please read Thomas Sowell’s “Basic Economics”, or Henry Hazlitt’s “Economics in one lesson”, take two Advil for the headache the cognitive dissonance causes, get a good night’s sleep, then start posting here again from an informed perspective.

Second, he did not say that she did not have access to quality healthcare, he said reliable healthcare. There is not much in the difference of the two, but you should at least get that right if you are going to nitpick every word. Furthermore, when people say “healthcare,” they are usually referring to the system as a whole, not just insurance or hospitals. Even if he did mean providers, it would still be true because a lack of adequate insurance hinders the access to adequate care because the person cannot pay for it.
Finally, I don’t know who the $*&% Saul Alinsky is and my guess is neither do you. You have just heard Glenn Beck’s lying @$$ talk about him so you think he must be evil. And no, I have no affinity for gangsters, I am just pointing out that the author of this article is full of it.

You claim the Beck only uses people’s own words. He may use people’s own words but grossly takes them out of context so he can attribute meaning the speaker never intended.
