Editor’s note: the video below has been updated.
A Denver television news anchor was injured Wednesday after she was bitten in the face by a dog during a live broadcast.
Kyle Dyer of Denver’s 9NEWS was conducting an interview about the rescue of Max, an 85-pound mastiff that fell through an icy lake Tuesday while chasing a coyote, the Denver Post reported. Firefighter Tyler Sugaski, secured by a life line, put on a wetsuit and ventured onto the ice to pull the dog to safety in the dramatic rescue.

The dog, its owner and Sugaski were all in the studio for a follow-up interview Wednesday morning when the dog lunged and bit Dyer during the live segment. In a video of the incident, Dyer gasps and quickly turns away from the dog, saying “Oh my God!” as the broadcast cuts away to Dyer’s co-anchor, who looks shocked.
“There was an incident during 9NEWS today. Kyle Dyer was bit in the face by a dog. She is getting medical attention due to the injury. As soon as we know the extent of Kyle’s injury, we will update you on her condition. Thanks everyone for the concerns/well-wishes,” a message posted on the station’s Facebook page said.
Co-anchor Gary Shapiro wrote on his own Facebook page that the dog is “being detained by animal control while they investigate the incident,” according to the Post.
“So you may have seen Kyle get bit by the dog in the 7 a.m. hour. All we know for sure is that he got her on the lip, and she’s being treated for the injury at the hospital,” Shapiro wrote. “We think she’s going to be OK, she was talking when she left.”
In another Facebook post, Brooke Thacker, a morning reporter for the station, wrote: “We fortunately had a firefighter who was already here and he’s taking care of her.”
Update: Dyer is awake and visiting with family in the hospital, a news release from the Denver Health Medical Center said.
Here’s the video of the dog getting rescued from the lake:

Posted on February 8, 2012 at 3:11pmThis happens a lot on TV why don’t they learn. Once Jane Mansfield had a small dog that an TV talk show was close too. The guy was trying to kiss the dog and Jane warned him saying that the dog does not like that you better stop. The guy got closer and the dog bit him on the nose causing a big injury and lots of blood. I saw it happen on another show to Johnny Carson. Will they ever learn.

Posted on February 8, 2012 at 3:53pmThis is why you dont put your face that close to a dog’s face. Dogs might be domesticated, but they still have unpredictable instincts/reactions to things around them. That dog was reacting to what he thought was a threat. This woman’s face was moving towards him, and his owner was right behind him. The dog could have perceived the reporter as a threat and was only protecting his owner. The reporter was an idiot getting her face that close to a dog she’s just met.
When I still had my dog (neighbor murdered him 6yrs ago), I would never try to kiss him on the face like that reporter did to that mastiff. Kissing a dog on the face is seen by the dog as a submissive action by the human. My dog was a rather large dog. I had to make sure he knew he was the low guy on the totem pole. People need to stop anthropomorphizing animals. Now that poor dog is going to be labeled a biter, and possibly be put down, and it’s human is probably going to be sued for having a “dangerous” animal.

Posted on February 8, 2012 at 4:34pm@TXPILOT I agree completely.Hey I’m an animal nut but I respect the instinctive tendencies and triggers for animals to react. Especially one I am not familiar with.
Unfortunately, what you have touched on, regarding Liberals, goes much deeper than this incident. What I am referring to is the appointment of human attributes to animals, to the ludicrous point of valuing an animals life and prosperity over that of humans.
U.S. Environmental policy fueled by the likes of PETA (AKA PITA… PAIN IN THE AXE) Sierra club, WWF and other radical environmentalists threaten our prosperity and standard of living.
It’s not hard to figure out why this is happening as our children are being indoctrinated to think this way through various outlets including but not limited to Hollywood, News Media and the public educational system.
One last point.. Beware, even cute fuzzy bunnies cause destruction and devastation.. Just look at the history of rabbits in Australia. Or you can come over and see what they did to my 700 sq ft wood deck and surrounding plants.

Posted on February 8, 2012 at 10:54pm@2ASPIRE……you are correct sir…..The problem with a majority of the animal rights people and environmentalists in this country, is that they live in cities, and they have never even seen the animal in real life, that they are patronizing. I use the example of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, which the libs cry about protecting from evil oil drillers, because it’s supposed to be some sort of paradise. I have been up there, and its the ice covered equivalent of a desert. The animals don’t care if we drill, and btw, polar bears are not at all cuddy and sweet. I got my first job on the North Slope years ago, when a polar bear killed and partially ate my predecessor……Libs need to serriously get out of their studio apartments and go experience the nature, before they start forming opinions about it.

Anyone with half a brain knows one thing about animals, they are ANIMALS and their behavior is unpredictable. This dog was out of his comfort zone in more ways than one and adding to it by petting it as if she were a familiar part of the “pack” the dog belongs to was already overstepping her place. Putting her face in his face to him was one of the dumbest things she did!!! This was interpreted as more than likely a threatening action to him, therefore he did what comes naturally, attempted to remove what he felt to be a threat to him in the current surroundings. I pray they do not put the dog down, in his own confort zone he probably would have been all over her licking her face and showing he felt her to be no threat, however, in the case of this revearsal of zones, Ms. Dyer received what she deserved. I hate she was injured and I know the pain of dog bites more than most people and the feelings, emotionally that come with being bitten, I can honestly say, by-in-large I have deserved most of the bites from this dog I am having to work so diligently with to help him relearn or rather teach him he is not the “Pack Leader”. Save the dog, teach Ms. Dyer animal etiquette. People wonder why God gave man dominion over the animal kingdom?

Posted on February 9, 2012 at 7:38pmJust for clarification, this was an Argentinian Mastiff, not a “pit bull”. This breed of dog is typically not aggressive, more of a protective dog. Additionally, this dog was in a strange place, with a strange person getting into his face. That’s a lot of strange for one canine.
Anyone who knows anything about dogs can tell you that a cardinal rule when handling a strange dog is DO NOT force your face into theirs. When they are comfortable with you, or you have established a confident and calm leadership role over them, then you can invade their territorial bubble.
Notice the temperament of the dog before the incident, he was actually quite calm and sedate until she got into his face, then he quickly snapped at her simply to let her know that she had violated his comfort zone. If he truly had aggressive intent, he would have advanced on her.
This was not the dog’s fault, but rather the fault of the reporter and the firemen handling the dog.

I live close enough to an animal shelter people get Rotweiler‘s without realizing how much they’ll eat grown, then drop them off outside, & they wonder past my place. When my kids were little, they loved it. Every Rott I saw the biggest danger to my stranger kids was that they’d drown in the slobbers! These things are huge but have temperments akin to Dobermans, “I just want to play.” My 3 ft son & I were in the barn & a Rott came in the door and put his head on my son and began to whimper like a puppy and head for the door and back until he got a ball to throw for it. Our dog catcher raised them and said they had to be trained to be mean, IT JUST WASN’T IN THEIR NATURE!

Posted on February 8, 2012 at 3:09pmThre article said it was a Mastiff. It looks to me like a Mastiff MIX. I owned a brindle colored English Mastiff and she was the most gentle, sweet dog I ever had. She was actually a 130 lb. lap dog. She was rescued by a friend, as a 1 yr. old pup, found wandering in a bad neighborhood. I think she was raised by drug dealers trying to make her into a guard dog, as she obviously was hit a lot when she was smaller. She would flinch and duck whenever a hand was raised near her face. I had to put her down a couple of years ago, because she was in a lot of joint pain. I wish I didn’t have to have done that, but it was for her mercy.

If you listen to the owner, the anchor asks him what kind of dog and he replies that it is an Dogo Argentino and Mastiff mix. No pitbull at all. But that is a huge problem with why so many pitbulls get the bad rap they have – people mistake all sorts of breeds and automatically assume it is a pitbull so much of the time. Good questions! Your friend’s neighbor never learned the specific characteristics of his mastiff breed. Was it a Dogo? Dogos are very protective of their family and can maul or kill a perceived “aggressor.” Some dog owners deserve to be charged with manslaughter when bad things happen.

There will always be a few dogs that are born unmanageable but the overwhelming majority of the problem lies with the owners. A friend of mine needed facial reconstructive surgery at the jaws of her boyfriends family border collie who had never harmed anyone. People who automatically blame the animal don‘t understand the Owners responsibility of making sure the dog is raised so it’s not a danger to society. Have you ever seen a friendly and safe wild dog? Doubt it. At the end of the day it still an animal, it the owners responsibility that it doesn’t act like one.

What is safer? A firecracker in the hands of an 8 year old or a grenade in the hands of an Army Instructor? There are too many unknown variables in your example to know.
I agree, someone who does not have the understanding or desire to be a pack leader should get poodle. I am against ignorant miscreants owning dominant dogs for the sake of increasing their tough factor. It is the same type of ignorance on display now by posters referring to this Mastiff as a Terrier, and the same reason the everglades are overrun with exotic snakes.
However, that doesn’t mean an experienced knowledgeable owner is being dangerous by owning a dominant breed. Properly trained dogs are a joy to be around. You can see properly trained dominant dogs youtube them if you have never been around one.

When I was a teen my dad brought me a dog one of his friends had but was a little intimidated by. A Bull terrier It was probably a year and a half old. The first thing it did to me is what that dog did to that lady. I punched that dog square in the forehead and kick the he77 and ran it up into it dog house. I never ever ever tried that again on me fact is after that it became one of the best dogs I ever had I could walk it without a leash and it wouldn’t gte more than 10 feet from me. If anyone raise their voice at me it went on the offense. I established byself as the alpha and it protected me .

Posted on February 9, 2012 at 11:20amI agree, if it was my dog, it would probably get a second chance of course I raised my dog. I took a german shepherd that was 18 months old confinded to a cage and was HORRIBLY ABUSED by children and teens. The owner said he was going to put it down, I asked to give a try, only catch was I couldn’t breed her and had to get her fixed. No problem. It took 3 LONG MONTHS and a few nips a couple that drew blood but after that, that dog followed every member of my family with love and compassion and warmth. She would sleep by my kids when they were sick and by my wife when they weren’t. Everytiem my wife got up for the day that dog would get up and dance and sing and talk… the wife hated it but I loved it… What devotion! Now I said that to say this. If ANY stranger came in, she NEVER took their eyes off them, she would let them pet her, feed her, anything. But the moment anyone felt intimidated, they were lunch. So yes, it is a shame that she was bit but the in your face… saw it coming… knew right when he was going to do it too. Sadly we buried our faithful lady of 11 years… She died after laying down next to our son who came back from college. That was a very rough day for us all.

I love dogs and I am not scared of dogs in any way. But pitbulls will turn on you, it may not be today, but they will turn on you. This dog was licking her and being all friendly and then a bite. Second, dogs are aggressive to humans ONLY if they are raised that way or if they believe they are being threatened, especially Pit Bulls. Your lack of knowledge about dogs and irrational fear bred from believing neagative rhetoric is the reason so many good animals are put to death needlessly. I have two well trained Pit Bulls that show love and affection to my family and will protect us from any dirtbags who might wish us harm. Posted on February 8, 2012 at 3:24pmArgentina mastiff – (AKA – Argentina’s version of the Pit Bull known for FIGHTING): The base stock began with the Old Cordoba Fighting Dog (now extinct). This dog was known for one thing: fighting. It was said that an Old Cordoba would even try to pick a fight with the female it was trying to mate with. Next, several other breeds were added to the mix. These included Mastiffs, Bulldogs, Boxers, English Pointers, Bull Terriers, Old English Bulldogs, Mastiffs, Dogue De Bordeaux, Harlequin Great Danes, Pyrenean Mastiffs and Irish Wolfhounds.
The woman wasn’t too smart getting her face so close to a strange dog and yes, plenty of dogs would have the same reaction.
That said, I would never own a pit or a rottie because they cant be trusted and knowing that most fatal mauling comes from the FAMILY Pit bull or Rottie, I could never live with myself. However, I dont believe government or anyone should tell someone what kind of dog they should own, but owner needs to be accountable should the dog attack anyone – owners of any breed.

Posted on February 9, 2012 at 5:24amBLACKSTONE22, Yes, I agree. The woman did not deserve to be bitten. Nor did the dog deserve to be put in the situation. She should not have gotten in his face. The dogs past might have something to do with having aggressive behavior. The animal was most likely tense for being in a strange place with lights and cameras. It does look like a Pitt to me, regardless I do not think it is fair to judge all Pitts by the actions of some. Irresponsible breeding and lack of social training can make any breed agressive. The trouble with a Pitt bite is their strength in their jaws. They cause more damage than other breeds. If you actually look at statistics there are fewer bites from Pitts compared to many smaller breeds. It was unfair of the current owner to place the dog in this situation that may result in having to put the dog down. People just don’t think when it comes to animals sometimes. She was a stranger. It could have been her smell, or her voice, her movements, or the fact that she entred his space to quickly, who knows. ? I do hope she recovers and that the dog is properly evaluated. It had to have been frightening for both her and the animal.
