Twitter Iconoclash: Rapper Brags About Wealth, Billionaire Oil Tycoon Puts Him in His Place

In this corner is Drake (yes, that’s really his stage name): a 25-year old Canadian rapper and former (Canadian) television star. Apparently, he’s kind of a big deal with the kids.

And in this corner is T. Boone Pickens: an 84-year old oil tycoon, entrepreneur, and the 328th richest person in America. He actually is a big deal.

Now, ordinarily, these two would probably never have any reason to meet, let alone talk finances. But that’s what Twitter is for.

“The first million is the hardest,” the Canadian rapper tweeted. Awesome. You’re wealthy. We couldn’t be prouder.

Here’s where it gets funny: T. Boone Pickens, who follows Drake on Twitter (why? We’ll never know), wasn’t at all impressed.

“The first billion is a helluva lot harder” the billionaire oil tycoon responded.

At this point, we assume Drake just kinda’ sat there and blinked a few times.

“@boonepickens just stunted on me heavy,” he eventually replied.

“There has never before been a point in history when a young black guy rich off of Canadian soap operas and luxury super-rap could exchange words with a quasi-eccentric super-rich octogenarian who loves wind power,” writes Gizmodo’s Sam Biddle. “Now they can—in public. And that, simply, is awesome.”

Next up, we’re hoping we can get a Twitter dialogue going between Jose Canseco and the Dalai Lama.

      No disrespect to T. Bone intended, but I found the first million the hardest. After that most of my income came from investments which are taxed lower than McDonald’s employee incomes and I, like Mitt, put a lot a of my money into secret Swiss bank accounts where I don’t have to a penny on my interest to the US government. Sweet.

      But I think T. Boone is on track with wind energy. Germany, for example, gets “the equivalent to 20 nuclear power stations at full capacity” with wind and solar energy.

      http://jonathanturley.org/2012/05/28/germany-hits-record-in-solar-power-with-50-of-energy-during-mid-day-hours/

      German is making its own energy with the wind and solar rays that God gave us for free. As the oil runs out and the price rises (or the price rises for other reasons, like wars in the Middle East or oil speculators cashing in on the gullible) Germany will be sitting pretty.

      Of course we in this country think that’s stupid. Oil is cheap, it‘ll never run out and if a country stops selling to us we’ll just conquer them. But one of these days in the not to distant future, we may rethink that idea.

      Git-R-Done, great reply. Next time you fill your gas tank give a big shout-out to the oil companies and their record profits at your expense. Big Oil loves your contribution to their profits but more than that they simply love that you support their effort to make as money as possible even as they s- you at the pump. They love that you praise them even when their nozzle is in the back of your car.

      I don’t believe everyone can or should be a millionaire/billionaire. If everyone could be, who would do all the work that needs to be done ? Who would sweep and mop the floors, pick-up the garbage, work in restaurants, fix cars, do plumbing, security guards, policemen, firemen, carpenters, bricklayers, retail, and so-on. You could say the samething about having college also, because college people will not do these things.

      Success looks different to everyone, whats successful to you, may not be success to someone else. Not everyone can be a millionaire or billionaire or a, doctor or lawyer. If you lot in life is to sweep and mop floors, theres no shame in it. And do your work with the Heart of an Angel…..

Bone made his billions off of Oil and his big push was for natural gas. You can bet he didn’t get where he is selling wind power. Just ask Obama he gambled on wind and solar and lost it all. But that’s okay JZ with all your millions you can just give a large donation to Barak and sit back and wait for the profits.

      He who forgets the past is doomed to repeat it. Not even a century has gone by since the first of two brutal world wars was waged by fascists started in a little European area called first the Germany Empire and then Germany. A country so far advanced of others technically and industrially they felt superior to those around them and decided to expand the Vaterland. Now you are telling us to use them as an example of doing things right?? How about we let at least a century pass since the last World War they started (WWII). Study history along with your environmental causes so that you can strike a rational balance of thought with regard to who and what we should be mimicking. You might find that we should be less concerned with doing like others and more concerned with doing like Unites States Americans.

      This is so ridiculous…how many of you claiming that all you have to do is work hard and you’ll make a million…..HAVE MADE A MILLION? You people are ridiculous.
      T Boone- His father worked as an oil and mineral landman (rights leaser). During World War II, his mother ran the local Office of Price Administration, rationing gasoline and other goods in three counties.
      He was a well known corporate raider and take-over operator in the 80s. Does it sound like he was poor, that he didn’t come from a dramatic element of wealth, with some serious insider information from his folks? Did he work hard? Obviously, but he had quite a bit to work with. Trump maybe worked hard, but his daddy gave him the money to buy his first hotels, default, and then sell them for his first million.
      Drake has talent…though, I can’t stand it….still. Did he work hard? Obviously, but he had talent.
      The fact is…upward mobility in the United States isn’t tops in the world by any means. The US ranks below Denmark, Australia, Norway, Finland, Canada, Sweden, Germany and Spain in terms of how freely citizens move up or down the social ladder.
      This is a fact. So, pretending that all you need to do is work hard, and you’ll be a millionaire is ridiculous. McDonalds people work harder than 90% of you, and me…and they can’t buy a simple steak. Typically, the harder you work…construction, dock workers, service industry…the less you make.

      A person earning $50,000 a year for 20 years can do this. What is needed to earn $50,000/year? Get educated or get a trade. But in both cases, you need to do something and get others to recognize your skill and its value.

Their job is about as hard, in many ways harder than an oil tycoon’s job and their service to society is just as necessary. The problem is not the money or amount of it. It’s that society will demonize an oil man for earning money and talk about how the rapper is not part of the 1%. And the fact that the rapper had to go on and brag about (and flippantly, I might add) how hard it was to make his FIRST million, implying that he’s worth many millions. The Oil man put him in perspective, but raising the stakes to a billion. The rapper got the slam, why can‘t y’all. It‘s not about how he made the money it’s that he had to rub it in the faces of everyone “following” him on twitter. That‘s why I don’t tweet.

    I heard the tale of a wealthy business executive inviting three other executives for a golf outing at a very prestigous country club. One was unable to attend and asked if an up and coming juinior executive could go in his place. The wealthy business executive agreed. Upon arrival at the country club the four men decided to have a beer. The young executive said I will get the tab. The very wealthy senior executive said, you are my guest. I will take care of it. They finished the round of golf and went for lunch and the junior executive offered to pay once again. Again he was told no. He offered to pay for the golf and was told no. He was a guest. On the return flight home the wealthy executive asked the young executive. What is your net worth? The young executive said, around a million dollars. The wealthy senior executive said that is pretty impressive. I tell you what. I’ll flip you for it.

      I will actually say that a blogger on one political site is not different than any other. I too am so very tired of racism and although the KKK and the NBPP have every right to gather, I disagree with the principles. What ever happened to judging people by their character? I am upset with the people that leave comments on this site. The conservative people replying on this site do not hold the values of most christian conservatives. The average person just wants to get through life just like anyone else, I am so sickened by the extremism on both sides.

      It is unfair to judge conservatives by the replies on certain sites, isn’t that what you are upset about? Stereo-typing? Do not stereo-type conservatives by these responses, realize that we are no different from you. We want what is best for our country so that we can provide a good life for our children. The government, not the majority of people, are causing this separation.

      I completely dis-agree with our president, not because of the color of skin, but because our country can not afford his policies. Don’t get me wrong though, Mitt Romney is no different. Politicians are all corrupt, we just have to vote for the one that we feel is ‘less’ bad for our country.

      Lastly, I’m not against the wealth but it is shameful that two people that have so much can joke about how much they have when so many people are suffering. God Bless you all!

      @ hidden_lion

      All liberals are racists. They think Black people can‘t fend for themselves and don’t have the same ability to pull themselves out of poverty as whites. Unfortunately most black people fell for it and remain slaves to liberals and the government.
      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      True statement. The left-wing hypocrisy also dictates that the blacks that do pull themselves out of the victim mentality are labeled “Uncle Toms”.
      I’ve read through all the comments on this story and the only one using racists terms is you, thereasonablelib. You use racist quotes as though they were taken from other posts on here, but I have yet to find the original posts these quotes came from. I can only assume they came from you in an attempt to make the casual reader believe someone other than you made them. You are really disgusting.
      Reasonable was not saying that Pickens reaction was racist, but that Becket Adams article and title specifically was racist. They both basically said the same thing, but Drake was “bragging” and Pickens “put him in his place.” It is hard to deny the racism there.
      The problem is all these sports figures and rappers spend their wealth on stupid stuff like cribs and pimp rides and never invest thinking the gravy train will never end and when they fall flat they wonder why.
    Income-wise it appears Drake is right alongside Mr. Beck, who constantly boasts about his success.
    Mr. Pickens’ post shows up Mr. Beck as well.
      The difference is that Beck doesn’t brag about his wealth. Beck has also been very public about his desire to die poor. He has spoken to Jon Huntsman Sr. about how to do just that. Beck gives very generously of his money and, once again, doesn’t brag about his wealth.
      He doesn’t have to follow him back to be noted or caught by someone else.
      You can see messages from people who don’t follow you or vice versa via the @ which then alerts the user that someone else just ‘called them out’ or whatever you wanna call it. On Facebook it would be called being ‘tagged’. SO I could include that rapper in one of my tweets like “@Drake you’re just a rich illiterate rapper” he‘d find that in his ’interactions’ column and then reply in kind like he did there ;)
    Even when you live your life trying to avoid stupid, ridiculous, things like twitter, they start putting tweets in the news stories and you end up reading them. People seem to be regressing back into childhood instead of acting like mature adults. Twitter, facebook, and all that other crap is just a waste of time designed for sheople. Come on follow me. That’s all you have to do if you want to be a part just follow me. What a joke.
      I agree with you on Facebook, it has become bloated as Myspace has but Twitter is a great tool to have some level of discourse and hear what others are going through around the world regardless of “friending” them. Don’t hate on it because of a couple morons, just learn to block them :-)
    I am glad they flash their wealth, it gives American’s hope that they can work and develop something also and get to where they are if they want it. I say let them flaunt it. It just makes you work harder.
    Nobody hated on Michael Jordan when he would play awesome and “flaunt” his skills. It only made kids on the playground and in the gyms work harder to be the next Jordan or surpass him!
      If Obama has his way, lets just tax him 75% and see what he tweets about that? People if this POS president gets re-elected this is whats going to happen! He wants people to be enslaved by our welfare programs in order to tip the scales. Once people are dependent on the Gov. and get everything for free, he can do whatever he wants. Look at what Hugo Chavez did. He took over food, media, oil revenues, companies, is this what you want? H_LL NO!……
      FYI people!
      When you keep tyaxing people: the rich to be exact, eventually those people either run out of money, or they move away to another country. Like ones without taxes!…….. Then what? People we need to wake up the Middle and Poor people and ask them this question. Do we want a Dictator, is this what they really want? If we don’t change these people were going to end up like a 3rd World Country. This is exactly where were headed with the obama/democrats/and last far left loonies! Look at the Green Jobs and how much money was spent on that! Then look at al gore, and his movement. Then look at the UN and want to tax the air we breath, the food we eat and drink, and then, our own natural resources. Also look at what they want to do with the internet. The UN wants to charge for it. What the H_LL did they do to make the internet? Nothing, its all about stealing our money and charging us for everything! It just makes them stronger at will and enabling them to charge us more for everything. New World Order! People won’t be able to buy or sell without the mark of the beast. Either on their forhead or in their right hand!…. Its coming, and people better wake up or we’ll have someone like obama telling us what job we can or can not do. You scoff at this? Start learning about the Global Elite. They want to reduce the Earths population 2/3. War, and Eugenics is coming!…… obama’s NEW WORLD ORDER!…
      Everyone knows that rappers get famous by doing the “Travolta”. Anyone could rhyme with a repetitive beat. Drake was not discovered. His tongue did a lot of reps for that first million. Look in to it. Kanye, lil Wayne, Drake…….. All pillow biters!
