Two Air Force F-16 Intercept Drug-Carrying Cessna Near Air Force One

WASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) — Two Air Force F-16 fighters intercepted a privately owned Cessna airplane that entered the same Los Angeles airspace as Marine One on Thursday as the helicopter was ferrying President Barack Obama.

Police discovered about 40 pounds of marijuana inside the plane after it landed at Long Beach Airport, a law enforcement official said. The official was not authorized to comment publicly on the drug investigation and spoke under condition of anonymity.

The Secret Service said the president was never in any danger.

In a statement, the North American Aerospace Defense Command said it scrambled two F-16 fighters from March Air Reserve Base in Riverside County, Calif., to intercept a Cessna 182 over Los Angeles about 2:30 p.m. EST.

The Secret Service said the plane had entered into the same airspace as Marine One. Officials interviewed the pilot and turned the matter over to local law enforcement.

NORAD spokesman Michael Kucharek declined to disclose how close the Cessna came to Marine One.

The Federal Aviation Administration had notified pilots that there was an eight-mile radius around Los Angeles that was off-limits to air traffic Thursday, spokeswoman Brie Sachse said. It was that radius that the Cessna violated.

Sachse declined to release the Cessna’s tail number, saying the agency doesn’t identify planes involved in security incidents.

      I agree using two F16′s is overkill. What they do is come along side with one F16 and wave their wings and get you to follow them to the nearest airport for the shakedown. The second F16 you will never see as he shadows you in your blind spot. He is there to shoot you down if you don’t respond to the flyby of the first F16. Pretty effective.

    Definitely a win for the drug cartels after this:

    1. demand remains the same; supply is obviously reduced; price goes up
    2. somebody’s competitor got eliminated (at least temporarily anyway); less competition also leads to higher prices (as the industry is consolidated into fewer hands)
    3. net profits go up for the remaining competitors as a result

    How can these guys be so dumb?You hear about these trafficers being caught like this quite often.I live in a small town just off the interstate and the local cops stopped a truck that was pulling out of a truck stop,because he had a tail light out.The guy took off running,they caught him and when they opened the truck guess what they found.It‘s been a few years and I don’t remember exactly how much drugs and money,but the village got a couple million.I think it made their nut for the next20 yrs.

      Yep, the old tail light ploy. They stop you for a tail light infraction and it quickly escalates. See this progressive use of law enforcement? They can progress from minor infractions to major ones and see what wonderful effect it has on society and the growth of big brother? So many people fall so readily into line, simply because we have the wisdom to legislate on tail lights.

      This was a set up Bob. maybe 40 lbs. of pot was on this cessna. Was it good pot or throw away pot? My guess is that it was the throw away type and the good stuff whizzed on by. The drug dogs were jumping onto the cessna and the serious weight was on the other plane which had now landed.

      Substance prohibition is worse.

      I tire of people warning us how drug abuse is a public health risk. Then as a solution to this public health-crisis they lock drug abusers in cages rather actually than helping them get well.

      Substance prohibitionists are stupid, across the board.

      Before you even ask, no I’m not a drug user. I just don’t like seeing people get punished for victimless crimes, which essentially makes the user the victim.
