The Globe and Mail reports:
Afghan protesters angered by the burning of a Koran by an obscure U.S. pastor killed up to 20 UN staff, beheading two foreigners, when they overran a compound in a normally peaceful northern city on Friday in the worst-ever attack on the UN in Afghanistan.
At least eight foreigners were among the dead after attackers took out security guards, burned parts of the compound and climbed up blast walls to topple a guard tower, said Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai, a police spokesman for the northern region.
According to the AP, one protester held a sign that said, “We want these bloody bastard Americans with all their forces to leave Afghanistan.”
The Afghanis were angry that a Gainesville, Florida church burned a Koran on March 20.
According to the AP:
The Gainesville, Florida church’s website stated that after a five-hour trial on March 20, the Quran “was found guilty and a copy was burned inside the building.” A picture on the website shows a book in flames in a small portable fire pit. The church on Friday confirmed that the Quran had been burned.
In a statement, Jones did not comment on whether his act had lead to the deaths. Instead he said it was time to “hold Islam accountable” and called on the United States and the U.N. to hold “these countries and people accountable for what they have done as well as for any excuses they may use to promote their terrorist activities.”
The AP reports that at least 7 foreigners were killed as a result of the protest in Afghanistan:
Thousands of protesters angry over the burning of a Quran by a Florida pastor stormed a U.N. compound Friday in northern Afghanistan, killing at least 12 people, including eight foreigners. The desecration of the Muslim holy book fueled resentment against the West at a critical moment in the Afghan war.
The demonstration in Mazar-i-Sharif turned violent when some protesters grabbed weapons from the U.N. guards and opened fire, then mobbed buildings and set fires on the compound, officials said. Demonstrators also massed in Kabul and the western city of Herat.
The topic of Quran burning stirred outrage among millions of Muslims and others worldwide after the Rev. Terry Jones’ small church, Dove Outreach Center, threatened to destroy a copy of the holy book last year. The Florida pastor had backed down but the church went through with the burning last month.
The AP also observes that last week, Afghan President Hamid Karzai issued a statement calling the burning a “crime against a religion.” He said it was a “disrespectful and abhorrent act” and called on the U.S. and the UN to bring the Koran-burners to justice.
This statement no doubt inflamed the Afghan protesters.
The AP notes that there was more than one protest in Afghanistan:
Several hundred people also protested the Quran burning at several sites in Herat, a city in western Afghanistan. Protesters burned a U.S. flag at a sports stadium in Herat and chanted “Death to the U.S.“ and ”They broke the heart of Islam.”
About 100 people also gathered at a traffic circle near the U.S. Embassy in Kabul. Police directed traffic around the demonstration in the capital. One protester carried a sign that said: “We want these bloody bastard Americans with all their forces to leave Afghanistan.”
In a statement, the Florida church’s pastor, Terry Jones, wasn’t apologetic for the Koran-burning incident that occurred at his church:
We… find this a very tragic and criminal action. The United States government and the United Nations itself, must take immediate action. We must hold these countries and people accountable for what they have done as well as for any excuses they may use to promote their terrorist activities.

You should definitely get this book: http://www.reformationbookstore.com/thestoryofthebiblemuseuminabook.aspx and read the history of your Holy Bible. What get‘s done in the name of religion isn’t just on one side – Christians have done as bad or worse.

Posted on April 1, 2011 at 8:10pm@ARX – oh yes. even in this country. Joseph Smith was not only persecuted but murdered while he was in jail. and then let’s not forget the “glorious” inquisition. then seems there was one Roger Williams who had to run away and found another colony in the US.
Most of the Hate Muslim rhetoric on the Blaze is no worse, nor what you wish to do with/to Muslims, than what they are in fact doing because they BELIEVE in Allah, in Mohammad, and the Qur’an.
No, I don’t condone it. but then I think it‘s rather childishness to burn someone else’s holy book. First, he knows it’s just ink on paper and thus symbolic. But he, and his congregation, are responsible for the deaths of those UN folks in Afghanistan. That he has the right to burn the book – he owned it. but by that same logic. the folks that own the ground in New York, have the right to build a Mosque on it. Spitting in each others face is surely a Christian activity.
Report Post »arx
Posted on April 1, 2011 at 9:02pmWhat does Joseph Smith have to do with anything? So he was murdered in jail, you mean that place where they keep violent criminals? What about the inquisition? How much ‘history’ do you know to be actual fact? Let me guess, you believe Pope Pius XII was a nazi sympathizer.
What you call “hate rhetoric” is very often just statments of fact. I think you are misinformed about a lot of things, most of all Islam and what its growth in this country means for our children’s security. Please don’t suppose what I “wish to do with muslims”. I wish to kill all muslims who are killing our troops or innocent civilians. Don’t make more of that than what it is.
So “childish” behavior is to blame for brutal murders? Huh? I agree it is childish to burn a book to try and piss someone off. Furthermore it is not christian. Jesus never taught that we should instigate…in fact He said the opposite: “blessed are the peacemakers…” The pastor and his congregation ARE NOT responsible for the deaths. Listen to yourself. Do you really believe that? So if I murdered a muslim because I saw someone in Pakistan burning a bible, I could blame it on them? That is what you are saying, and you can’t really believe that.

Whoops: New York boy charged with anti-Muslim hate crime is a Muslim too
Hamas-linked CAIR and other Muslims have not hesitated to stoop even to fabricating “hate crimes,” including attacks on mosques. CAIR and other groups like it want and need hate crimes against Muslims, because they can use them for political points and as weapons to intimidate people into remaining silent about the jihad threat.
In this case, however, the hate crimes industry has snared a young boy who turns out to be a Muslim himself. But Hamas-linked CAIR could turn this into a double victory: they could claim victim status for the girl, and meanwhile claim victim status for the poor Muslim boy falsely accused of a hate crime. Don’t thank me, Honest Ibe — I’m here to help!

Extreme religious leaders like Terry Jones (Dove World Outreach Center) and Fred Phelps (Westboro Baptist) are no better than those that killed the 20 U.N. Workers. The US Government advised Jones that this type of reaction could happen. He chose to ignore his governments warning. I believe the families of those killed would have a case against Jones and his church that they were culpable in the deaths with their actions.
After listening to Mr. Farrakhan’s full “press conference”/pulpit speech and reading this news report it is harder for me to see the Islamic faith as a kind and loving religion. Likewise I find it hard to believe that Jones‘ and Phelps’ churches are kind and loving as well.

Posted on April 1, 2011 at 8:40pm@Grandmaof5 WOW….I intend absolutely on disrespect in regards to what I am about to write but your comment on this story truly shocked me. I read this news site every day and I have never commented but this time, I can’t help it, I feel compelled. Please don’t take any of this personal. If you are thinking it then a lot of other people are thinking it too.
First, the people who were murdered that were working at the U.N. chose to work there, no one was forcing them to. They also daily choose to go to that job knowing full well the inherent dangers that they could potentially face from the savages who infect that part of the world. Additionally, it is reasonable to expect that any foreigners who chose to go there would have also known the inherent risks they were taking in doing so. I say all that to say, at least some of these people who were killed were partially responsible for their own death. People have personal choices that they alone are responsible for making If you choose to work in or around a place that has an extreme likelihood of experiencing violence and barbarianism you must also take responsibility for the choice you make. It does not take a (k)oran burning to incite these mongrels to violence, these people feed on their own evil imaginations. They are looking to shed blood and murder innocent souls whose only crime is not being foolish enough bow down before a group of deceitful and Godless neanderthals who crave the crowning of their own power and god-hood. They will invent a reason to feed their blood-lust regardless of having someone burning the (k)oran to blame it on.
Report Post »Secondly, since when did it become a reasonable idea to allow ANYONE to hold our freedoms ransom at the barrel of a gun? Should we also worship their false god if they threaten to start killing all their citizens until we do? Personally, I will never allow immoral degenerates to hold a sanction over my soul. When someone commits an act of force against another person, there is no one else even remotely responsible for the act of the person using force, even when the force is death. 2 + 2 never equals 5, it always equals 4. Burning a (k)oran is not an act of force; it is a form of constitutionally protected non-verbal speech. An act that harms no one can NEVER be the cause of someones death. There is no blood on the hands of the people who burned the (k)oran and I pray they never allow anyone to sanction them with that unjust and unrighteous guilt. If someone feels so strongly about the evils that they believe are caused by the (k)oran that are compelled to burn it to make a statement, they should be praised, not scorned for following their conviction fearlessly even if I don’t agree with their convictions. Non-verbal speech that physically harms no one is a right that a lot of American blood has been spilled to protect. Personally, in answer to such an act of cowardice, murder, destruction and attempts to intimidate Christians and the United States, I wish I had a (k)oran here that I could burn myself. It is important for dogs like that to realize that they do not have the ability to strike fear in the hearts of innocent people. Running away from bullies and murderers will never make them go away, they will only grow bolder in victories of intimidation.

No, I am saying the bible says to love, not hate, Gentiles. If you don’t agree, don’t take it out on me, you and God can have that conversation. I fully understand Islamic extremist want nothing better than to blow this nation and Jews to bits but it is hypocritical of a pastor who preaches the word of God every week to turn around and display such hatred. If it was done by someone who was not a pastor then it’s free speech but I believe preachers of the gospel of Christ need to be held to a higher standard. Hatred breeds hate and that’s not what the word of God is all about.

Posted on April 2, 2011 at 1:42amI agree that the actions of these murderers is reprehensible, indescribably revolting. These acts show the worst that humans are capable.
But there is one thing I’d like you to consider. These people heard that this man of Christ, along with his congregation, burned a copy of the Koran. That offended them deeply and was something they considered an attack on those things they hold sacred and sancrosanct. I‘m not saying that’s right or that’s correct, I‘m just saying that’s the way it was perceived. And perception is reality.
Here’s my point. They heard that this American Christian pastor committed an act of sacrilege against their faith. And based on the acts of the small fraction of the Christians on earth, that all Christians had the same beliefs as this kook. In other words, they believed that this pastor represented all Christians.
Think about it. Does this pastor represent the Christian religion? If not, why do you think the acts of an incredibly tiny fraction of the Muslim religions represent all Muslims?

WTF are we doing in Afghanistan? Let them eat poppies. They’re clearly not ready for the blessings of liberty we are attempting to give them. Hell, we‘re not even ready for all the blessings our constitution affords us or we wouldn’t keep trampling on it..
Just tell the Afghanis we’ll leave them alone if they leave us alone… but make it clear that the next time we determine that a weapons-of-mass-destruction incident originated from Afghanistan, we’re not going to send our boots back to their ground. No… if we have to go back there, they won’t hear us coming until the air temperature starts heating up to 4,000 degrees around them.
No doubt that between Libya, Iran, and N.Korea, one of them will test our resolve, but once demonstrated, the rest will pay closer attention if we actually had the will to use our weapons the way they’re meant to be used.
Middle-Easterners have no such compunction about using whatever weapons they can get their hands on – that‘s why we call their IED’s “Improvised” Explosive Devices – because they are homemade from whatever they have available. We have far greater weapons available but we still use rubber bullets under some rules of engagement!
Until we have the will to end these wars quickly, our enemies will drag them out as long as they can. Ho Chi Minh demonstrated taught our enemies a valuable lesson about will and determination – a lesson which unfortunately we have yet to learn. He never won a single battle in Vietnam, but he had the will to outlast us and he won. When we send our troops to defend a foreign land, while caring more about our enemies’ collateral damage than they do… they’ve already won… it just takes us thousands of dead Americans and billions of dollars to admit it.
Libya is already turning into a stalemate that could trap us for years because we do not value our own soldier’s lives enough. We care more about protecting our enemies’ non-combatant citizens than our enemies do. They hide in their mosques to shoot at us; but did anyone notice that Gadhafi didn’t hesitate to utterly destroy all the mosques that Libyan rebels were hiding in? How many Quran’s went up in flames or were blown to bits – And where’s the outcry from the Muslim world over that???? Did they behead any innocent Muslims for that?
We cannot win wars by fighting only by our own rules – we must fight by the enemies’ rules or worse – until they want no part of conflict with us. Before they can ever learn to love us, they first must be taught to respect us. Until they respect us (& yes, that includes fearing us), then everything else is just another futile ‘Progressivism experiment” that wastes American lives and treasure.

The difference between burning a Quran and the Bible is:-
1. It is claimed that the Bible is the word of God – WRITTEN by MAN
2. Muslims claim that the Quran is the word of God – WRITTEN by GOD.
And the fact is that both sides believe in the IDENTICAL God.

Well, as an American patriot who loves and defends his country, I protest the burning of the USA flag, which is “sarced” to most Americans. If the killing of foreigners during the protest is an acceptable action to most muslims, exactlly WHAT have we accomplished in Afghanistan these past 10 years of the war ?
If muslims can burn our flag I feel I and anyone else who feels like it have have the right to burn the “Quran”. Obviously the USA flag means nothing to muslims and the “Quran” means absolutely nothing to most Christian Americans. It’s time to bring our military forces home and let the Afghans and Iraquis take care of themselves.

Posted on April 2, 2011 at 7:37amOnce again the Muslims have proven that Islam is nothing more than a Satantic Barbarian Death Cult and anything against it will be attacked and destroyed.
This is exactly why Mr. Jones did it in the first place, to expose the intolerance against anyone opposed to Islam and show the proof of the violence it causes. And we want to partner and mass migrate millions of Muslims to the US?
It is still amazing how many Americans are out there that are brainwashed that Muslims are tolerant and peaceful, they are only tolerant and peaceful as long as they are getting their way and nothing is opposing their Islamic conquest but as soon as you do be ready for bloodthirsty murderers from the pits of Hell to suddenly appear from out of the lives of these “peaceful” people.
Immigration from Islamic countries needs to be completely cut off in the USA! Do you want to willingly allow bloodthirsty murderers to move in next door to you? Now is the time all conservatives we must out populate them, start having as many children as you can so that we can continue to fight them and the evil they pose to the world in the future! Furthermore we need to elect more Rep. KIng’s, Allen West‘s and Herman Cain’s into office that understand the threat from these Barbarians! This is why the Crusades were fought, to drive out the murderous Muslim hordes from Europe! We need another one today in America!

That said, to use this incident as an excuse to kill someone, let alone further desecrate the human body by beheading is yet another example of the type of insanity we are dealing with. Let’s just call it what it really is – Evil. Worse, few people in the country give any credibility to this fact and believe these evil people and their philosophy can actually be negotiated with. “The difference between burning a Quran and the Bible is:-
“1. It is claimed that the Bible is the word of God – WRITTEN by MAN”
That’s a distinction without a difference.
2 Tim 3:16-17
16 All Scripture is inspired [theopneustos, "God-breathed"] by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;
17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
“2. Muslims claim that the Quran is the word of God – WRITTEN by GOD.”
Both the Koran and the Bible are “written” by printing machines, today. Only the views expressed by the words are important – not the ink or paper used to convey them, per se.
“And the fact is that both sides believe in the IDENTICAL God.”
This isn’t true.
Acts 4:12
12 “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”
“So who her believes in the burning of God’s word – no matter who wrote it??”
I’ll burn any holy book I own, if I want to – I own them. And, again, it’s just paper – only the message conveyed by the words can be sacred – not the paper and ink made by our machines and chemists.
