Two Coast Guard Members Found Shot and Killed at Alaska Station

KODIAK, Alaska (AP) — Two Coast Guard members were fatally shot at a communications station on an island off Alaska, officials said Thursday.

Officials said it remained unclear if the deaths at the Coast Guard Station on Kodiak Island were a double homicide or a murder-suicide. Capt. Jesse Moore said it was “possible that the suspect remains at large.”

Moore told KMXT-FM radio that the shootings happened earlier Thursday.

The station serves as the “ears in the sky” for radio transmissions from mariners and aircraft, Petty Officer Charly Hengen said, and is responsible for relaying distress calls to the air station of the Coast Guard in Anchorage. A commanding officer and enlisted and civilian personnel are stationed at the base about eight miles from the island’s largest city of Kodiak, Hengen said.

Officials said the base and nearby schools were on lockdown. Moore told the city’s 6,300 or so residents “to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to local law enforcement officials” until more details emerge.

Moore called the shooting a “rare occurrence.”

Hengen said the communications station has “secure front doors” and requires its 59 staff members and any visitors to show identification.

Rear Adm. Thomas Ostebo, the commander of Coast Guard operations in Alaska, was in New London, Conn., for a conference at the Coast Guard Academy but left ahead of schedule and could not be reached for comment, according to academy spokesman David Santos. The two-day conference on leadership for the Arctic began earlier Thursday.

The FBI said agents were headed to Kodiak from Anchorage about 250 miles away.

The Guard said the identities of the victims would be released after family members were notified.

      “DEMOCRACY Yes, indeed, our public nationwide loves responsible and brave police officers, of whom serve well and are dedicated towards their duties as servants of the people. This is all good and well. All cities Across America are facing a growing dilemma, as to various personalities entering the law enforcement industry. Like any profession, bad apples will appear. This is nothing new in national police work. It just so seems that when FEMA and SWAT opened their doors that bullies began to wear badges. Man’s brutality can be harnessed so much under civil laws. Yet, pinning a badge upon a psychoneurologically disturbed personality is questionable. Further, having disordered minds behind a cam to literally rip off the public is nothing but legalized banditry. When some work of mechanical technology snatches money from **** sapiens with a flick of a switch, then it will be more worthy to return to the cave-man era, and to club thy neighbor as usual, rather than railroading him with an unseen beam. Why not put cash registers in all road-side speed traps, police cars, and save the labor of switching on a cam. Naturally, civil jobs in police activities are unproductive and do not create any wealth. This, of course, applies to city and county managers who turn their heads, in pulling money into their coffers, Public servants that fit into the subject in question, including SWAT and FEMA, should seek membership into the national IWW–i won’t work union, or join the military

    There is video tape I guarantee it. Most Federal Reservations/Installations and military bases have video surveillance . Semi Isolated duty a low security threat with no need for armed watch standers all weapons were either in the Armory, at the Air Station or with the Sector/Group. Uncle Sam’s Confused Group. Is a great Organization I spent lunch today with my many friends from my time in the Coast Guard I hope it was not Coastie on Coastie violence. Or an angry spouse I will pry for them and their families Fair Winds and Following Seas.

      Extremely rare for the Coasties in general. My grandfather was a surfman in the formative years of the Coast Guard. The shallow water guys did heroic service in Vietnam and all other places of service. My prayers for the families and friends.

      Not so sure about that ,. Have you noticed an abnormal amount of shooting’s that seem to be suddenly happening? I know that case’s like Zimmerman were not conducted to further a cause but it has obviosly been exploited to that end. They want to take away our second amendment right’s and at this point I have come to believe they are capable of doing just about whatever thery please. My prayer‘s with the familie’s.
