NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Police say two men have been killed and 62 people hurt in a 40-vehicle pileup that closed Interstate 10 for hours in eastern New Orleans.
Officer Garry Flot said 25 people were taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to critical while 37 others refused treatment for minor injuries after the 4 a.m. Thursday pileup. Flot says one firefighter was hurt while working at the scene.
Flot said the dead were identified as the driver of a pickup truck and a 54-year-old passenger in another pickup. The crash occurred on the interstate lanes heading toward the city’s business district. Eastbound lanes were restricted to emergency vehicles.
The interstate remained closed in the early afternoon.
Police were investigating the cause, including whether fog or smoke limited visibility.

Posted on December 30, 2011 at 12:26pmI have relatives in New Orleans. They told me that the main reason for the accidents was fog. They said that fog set in suddenlly and visibility was less than 10 feet ahead of you. By the time you saw cars wrecked in front of you, you would be crashing into them. Also..a lot of people work in the refineries around that area. They change shifts at odd hours. Some at 5AM…some a 6AM. ..depending on which units you work at. Most of those people were probably leaving or going to work.

Posted on December 30, 2011 at 8:22am@JOHNSELL really no story here as a former nawlins resident, 4 am could mean 2 things people driving home from the 24/7 french quarter or people driving in and starting the new years earlyin the 24/7 french quarter. I am sure fog was bad as a blogger mentioned then add alcohol, then add nawlins people are just mediocre drivers.

Posted on December 30, 2011 at 3:34amThe only way 40 cars pile up is 39 jerks tailgaiting.
If you don‘t put at least 1 car length per 10 mph you’re traveling between you and the car ahead, then you are tailgaiting, and you are indeed a jerk.
I’ll never understand the mentality. You think someone’s going to get ahead of you in line….on the interstate? Worried someone will cut you off….by changing lanes ahead of you?
If you’re that guy, then you’re a jerk. The person ahead of you has at least as much right to be where they are as you do, and more of a right if you came up behind them. The only exception is the passing lane (in most states) to the far left. If you’re in the passing lane, you must be passing or you must yield to someone behind you, regardless of whether or not they’re speeding. Check the law in your state.
If you’re driving too closely, I’m the guy who just took his foot of the accelerator and let his Durango slow down to 40 mph. The number of people who will continue to tailgate at 40 for more than a mile rather than just pass and go around simply astounds me. More astounding is when they pass giving me the dirty look, as if I was the jerk.
If I can’t see your front end in my rear view mirror, you‘re lucky I’m not slamming on my brakes. In my state, you‘re automatically at fault if there’s a collision. Idiots.

Posted on December 30, 2011 at 2:32amI think there might be a story here, but no attempt to fill in the detail, like how could there be 40 vehicles involved at 4:00 a.m. or does the south start work earlier than the rest of the country? How about holding the story until there is something to communicate?
