Government

Two Firefighters Dead, Over Two Million Acres Burned, 400 Homes Destroyed. . . But It‘s Not A ’Disaster.’

Imagine the response from the Federal government if the entire state of Maryland, all of it, was engulfed in a gigantic, uncontrolled wildfire. And the next week, all of Rhode Island was burned to a crisp… More than two million acres of land burned, 400 homes destroyed and at least two firefighters lost their lives trying to stop the worst wildfires in almost one hundred years.

Do you think the President would be visiting the area, declaring it a ‘disaster’ and providing truckloads of aid and support? Of course he would.

But this is not about Maryland or Rhode Island. This is about the state of Texas. Since January, Texas has been experiencing a drought like nothing they have seen in a century. The lack of rain and dry brush have created ideal conditions for wildfires. And the state has not really hit the peak of ‘wildfire season.’

The current details on the Texas Wildfires:

  • Two firefighters have died battling the wildfires
  • 2.2 million acres burned in over 7000 different fires
  • 400+ homes destroyed

Governor Rick Perry has requested that the state be declared a Federal disaster area, which would allow them to access needed financial assistance. This request was first delayed and then denied.

Listen to Gov. Perry’s interview with Blaze friend and syndicated radio host Joe Pagliarulo.

How much is a 10 foot piece of 2″ PVC? Don’t think huge. Think and act small on a large scale. ANY start is better than sittin on your butts and wringing your hands and cryin about your misfortune. One mile of 2‘ PVC pipe gotta cost less than one mile of 30’ PVC. Smaller pumps gotta cost less than bigger pumps. Same with valves and ditches and reservoirs. Hey STU PEDASO, I gotta idee how ta hep y’all out there in Texas. Put together a system of pumps and valves and pipes and reservoirs to remove water from flooded or rising rivers in one area of the country and send it to those areas that NEED the dang stuff. Like Texas for example, or maybe New Mexico or Arizona. Them places is sure dry. It’ll cost a heapa bucks to do it, but I think that having, water when you need it where you need it just might justify the expense. It would also lessen the need to BLOW UP A DANG LEVEE that we paid good money to build, so‘s other people won’t lose their homes, lives and jobs. This ain’t rocket science. I know, cause I ain’t no rocket scientist. But, dangitall hit makes sense. Doing this would put a lot of people to work and you can get a lot of different types of pumps that don’t use anything except wind, sun, or water to work. Green Jobs! The CRAP OF ENGINEERS don’t even need to be involved. Good thing too. Lookit the job they been doin’ wif flood control as it is.

      @ignor anus,
The drought has hit Houston also and we have plenty of water in both Lake Houston to the north and the Addicks Reservoir to the west. We could go for years with no rain but that doesnt mean we have the ability to water all the salt grass and the forests that surround us. To suggest that problems that arise from a drought are caused by a lack of foresight shows how ignorant you are.

      Mossbrain. Very appropriate.
Listen, most of the fire departments here in texas are volunteer fire departments which all help each other out anytime. Fund-raising is done with fish frys, barbeques and selling chances on donated hunting equipment etc.

Anyone wants to know how to help with funding should just pick a town in one of the fire areas and donate directly to the vfd.

Apparently you weren’t here when the fires broke out. Yes, fire-breaks are helpful when there are no winds to contend with. However, many people lost their homes because of 60 mile per hour wind gusts blowing fiery grass and tumble weeds into their wood structures, so no amount of clearing helped those people. WE WILL Survive without the Federal Government.

God Bless our brave fire-fighters from all over the country.

Texas is doing pretty well, so just don‘t send in the federal tax’s collected off of fuel. That can go to fund the firefighters and the national guard. So Texas can fight fires and illegals. I’m sure obama will under stand.

More political strategy by Obama, if it makes the governor look bad like he is doing nothing and can’t stop this disaster and is not helping people then there is a better chance for him to be kicked out and replaced with someone who will throw a fiesta with US taxpayer dollars to every man, woman, and child that crosses the border to invade our country!

Seriously folks…Texas is my neighbor…We have had more rain than we know what to do with and Texas is dry as a bone…they are in a serious situation. Why have they been ignored? Could it have to do with the fact that they vote largely conservatively??? Being in AR, we have been hit with tornadoes, floods, high winds, down trees, power outages, but I have also been through droughts….In CA where I was born and raised and in AR when everything we had burned up…and we had to fight fires away from our house. I am sorry for you folks..and pray that the government will give you the help you need to fight this battle.

I heard Rush Limbaugh talk about this today. I don’t know why Texas was denied. Alabama will be receiving disaster aid. Alabama had Republican landslide victories, first since War Between the States, if I remember correctly. So doesn’t make sense.

We the People need to show we can get things done without the federal government being involved. I’m sure the people in Texas can work together to stop a fire.
Is there some place the rest of us Can send help and be sure it will go where needed?

Death toll gets you disaster status. What you have now is an insurance claim. Besides, Texas wants to succeed. Let ‘em. They say that til they want help then they come crying.

I live in North Alabama and went through the storms and I have only heard of whites being killed. I‘m sure it wasn’t just whites but it doesn’t seem minority-heavy by any means.

so what’s the “there’s your answer” comment supposed to mean? sounds like you’re full of it.

If we were to secede, we wouldn’t be paying Federal taxes. We could keep the money at home and not have to beg some partisan president to get OUR money back when we need it. That goes for many other things besides just disaster relief.

Yeah bible quotin: Texas does want to succeed but like every other state, they‘re being strangled by the fed gov’t. I know that’s not what you meant but as a product of the public education system, that probably went over your head anyway.
If ever there was a time for secession, it’d be now.

Chezewiz – I live in B’ham AL and all different races were affected by the tornado. My WHITE aunt and uncle in Tuscaloosa got hit. Your comment is ridiculous.

I hope the people of Texas are stepping up to help their neighbor as we are here. The Christian church is doing an amazing job helping the victims. I am proud to be an Alabamian.

Rick Perry, all on his own, came up with his secession comments. He joined in with the Republican rants about the government spending too much money especially what they call hand outs. Perry went on about how well Texas was doing and how we didn’t need federal money. And now? Perry, along with Senators Hutchinson and Cornyn, are crying for the federal government to come bail them out so the State doesn’t have to pay for the damage from the wildfires. Sounds like they want a hand out to me.

FEMA is covering 75% of the costs and Rick Perry says that’s not enough!?! Perhaps Rick Perry should remember that it was Republicans who cut funding for FEMA. FEMA now has to decide who is more in need. Is there any doubt that the tornado stricken areas with the massive devastation and greater loss of life deserves more than our scrub land burning? Yes, we’ve had some lives and houses lost but nowhere near what Alabama has suffered.

What happened to the swaggering hot head who wanted to secede, who said we would be better off without the federal government? How can he complain about not getting enough money from the government when he constantly criticized the money that was given out by the government? I guess it makes a difference when you are the one in need.

Not that I expect this will cause Perry to understand how others, who are in need, feel. He would actually have to think of someone other than himself.

      Nothing but pansies in Texas.

Nice bible quote there moron, why is it considered crying if we pay our taxes just like any other state. I mean the federal government is still paying people that were harmed by Katrina but Texas can’t get any federal help? Yea we want to succede but we haven’t yet so we should receive federal money because of a natural disaster just like any other state, we pay into that disaster fund just like everyone else in this country. As far as you are concerned you can kiss my Texan ass.
