Two Grandmothers Among the First to Legally Wed as Gay Marriage Begins at Midnight in NY

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) — They are mothers and grandmothers, and now they are trailblazers.

Kitty Lambert, 54, and Cheryle Rudd, 53, both of Buffalo, made it a point to be among the first same-sex couples to wed in New York state.

About 150 people gathered at a low-key reception before their ceremony at a park at Niagara Falls where guests ate cupcakes and hors d’oeuvres.

Lambert acted as a master of ceremonies, standing on a stool and thanking people for attending and for supporting the state’s legislation.

Lambert, an art gallery manager at El Museo, grew up in Arizona and co-founded OUTspoken for Marriage with her partner in 2004 to pursue the right to legally marry. The grassroots group became OUTspoken for Equality in 2008.

Lambert and Rudd, who works at a pasta factory, have been together 12 years. They met while they were living in Arizona after divorcing. The women, who have five children and 12 grandchildren between them, have had several other commitment ceremonies while hoping their state would someday recognize their union.

“We’re finally getting the same rights as everyone else,” Rudd said while planning a ceremony in Niagara Falls at midnight, the moment the law took effect. “Nobody can take that away from us anymore.”

The early Sunday marriages mark a pivotal moment in the national drive for recognition.

New York is the sixth state to allow same-sex marriage. Its historic vote to legalize it last month was viewed by advocates and opponents as a watershed that would galvanize both sides.

In Hudson, about 30 miles south of the capital, Albany, Linda Mussman, 64, and Claudia Bruce, 65, legally married after 35 years together.

The women devoted to alternative and avant-garde art met in New York City in 1976 and later moved about 100 miles upriver to Hudson, where they bought an old brick building and dubbed it Time & Space Limited, a theater and arts center they co-direct.

That’s where they were wed just past midnight Saturday in the arts center with about 200 friends and family members.

“It’s a big exciting event,” Mussman said.

They could have married in neighboring Massachusetts, Connecticut or Vermont but waited for New York to legalize gay marriage. Though Mussman was raised in the Midwest, she was drawn to New York City’s art scene.

“My whole life has been to be a New Yorker,” she said.

Mussman said the couple “held out” to get married in New York. She put the state‘s decision to legalize gay marriage up with women’s suffrage and other major civil rights milestones.

In a wedding announcement on the TSL website, the pair said: “The ceremony will be conducted promptly at midnight. Following, there will be a midnight reception with music and dancing, which will last no later than 2 a.m. as the brides need their beauty sleep.”

And in Albany, Mayor Jerry Jennings said he’d marry a handful of couples who wanted to be among the first.

Barb Laven and Dale Getto said they do at 12:01 sharp in Albany’s City Hall with 10 friends and family members watching. Together for 14 years, the couple wore “I (Heart) NY” pins, each with a rainbow flag stuck in the middle of the heart symbol.

Jennings performed the ceremony, following through on a promise he made to the couple three years ago. Laven, 53, said the mayor, a Democrat, was on the “correct side” of the gay marriage debate.

“Tonight, we redefined our love and commitment to each other in a way that we were never able to do before: Through marriage. Forever,” said Laven, who works for the state attorney general’s office. “And it feels wonderful.”

Getto, who’s also 53, is a school administrator in Albany.

      Help me out here…they are both grandmothers?…so were they straight and then went gay…or artificially insiminated in order to have children then grandchildren…did society surpress them so much during their child baring years that they had children and then when everyone was “coming out of the closet”, they were able to be gay openly…this is the biggest question I have about homosexuality…either your born this way…or your not…Some will jump all over this…call me niave, bigotted or whatever…One thing I do agree with…looking at two “grandmothers” kissing on their “wedding” day is kind of gross!

      I would think someone in here would represent the libertarian view point. I consider myself a conservative libertarian. Gay marriage to me seems like a re-definition of a word. It makes me uncomfortable, but to be intellectually honest, I have to grunt and put up with it. In a world where I were king I would allow for a civil union that grants equivalent rights. I have also thought, perhaps all recognition of marriage should be religious and not civil. It ain‘t the gooberment’s business who chooses to associate with whom. It’s between the two people and God. If God likes it, or don’t like it, they will sure enough find out eventually.

      Let’s say Social Security allowed you to name a beneficiary to your benefits the way ANY private insurance annuity would. Then divorced heteros like me would comforted knowing that our children would get the proceeds of my decades of payments upon my demise. By allowing us to name our beneficiaries the recognition of a religious decree is removed from civil authority. Don’t get me wrong, I believe in God and would like to see SS abolished, but I am just trying to illustrate that from my Libertarian view point, this is just another thing where government over-reach screws things up.

      Or maybe they’re bisexual. Some people are, but hardly anybody calls themselves that because people think it means they’re promiscuous, and if they are looking for a long-term relationship it’s easier to act as of they’re only attracted to the gender of the person they are with at the time.

      Natural is a weird thing to even try and define. I get this feeling that the (well deserved, I am not arguing with that) feeling of superiority that humankind has makes us rather indifferent to what goes on in nature. It‘s hard to say if nature doesn’t know what is natural and humans do, or if nature knows what is natural and humans don’t.

      Tea Party Patriots: Didn’t we start as rational readers of the Constitution that wanted mainly to get sane economics in play? I dare say that same-sex marriage has been constitutional for some time… even so, isn’t it about freedom? Freedom for these people to marry and freedom for the state to decided to recognize it or not? and freedom to any religion to sanction it or deny it.

      I am certainly happy for them in their happiness. I would extend a congratulations.

      Even though I’m not a tea party person, I do believe in freedom, doesn’t states recognize civil unions, I know they do common law, I just have a problem with them getting married…marriage was ordained by God, and I know alot of christians feel this stomps on our traditions. I‘m thinking most christians really don’t care if you’re gay, what you do is your business, quit making it mine.

      I do understand you sentiment. Marriage has meaning in many religions. It also has meaning to the state. Strictly from a legal point of view–not a religious one–it is inherently unjust to extend a privilege to one group of legally consenting adults and not another. To call it by another legal name is also inherently unjust and is similar to the “separate but equal” concept that did not work out so well. It should be obvious to the people, lawmakers, and courts that a same-sex marriage ceremony (that is a religious one) does not have to happen within a church that is against it. 1st amendment, I am sure we all know. That marriage is a religious matter. However, the signing of a legal contract is a civil matter, not a religious one. A church does not have to recognize it as sanctioned by GOD, but the government certainly has to recognize it as being sanctioned by the state–or get out of the business of legally recognizing marriage altogether. In which case there would still be same-sex marriage, because several religions have no issue with it.

      What religion would condone? Try an open minded, intellectually honest, truly welcoming religion: Unitarian Universalist. My minister with a PhD is a gay women with a wonderful partner who’s a teacher. The narrow minded, unthinking, judgemental religious bias is amazing of many of these viewers is sad. Why should two people who love each other kissing be disgusting to any secure, loving, rational person? Don’t give me the “bible says…” hiding behind narrow interpetrations. I am ordained and marry people and look forward to the day when I can do a holy union between a gay couple. So that really threatens these people’s identity, sexuality or relationship? How shallow they must be. God doesn’t make junk. Sexual orientation is not a choice. Is being heterosexual a choice? Of course not. Would anyone choose to be a “***” “queer” “sissy”? Think about it. Think for your self. I for one will celebrate a religion and faith that is about acceptance, free exercise of reason and respect for others. That is God that is loving and just.

      The evidence is everywhere. You just have to look. But your eyes are blinded. If you look at the universe and think that it just popped up out of nowhere then you’re not as critical a thinker as you think you are. If you think that things as complex as our human bodies, capable of thoughts and storing memories, just evolved out of nowhere, and all came together out of chaos, then you’re not really thinking about it very critically. Here’s another thing you may never understand. God reveals himself to believers in many ways. Not saying he visibly appears or audibly talks to all of us, but he reverals his himself nonetheless through our prayers. This is the real evidence that we believers have and you don’t have access to. So yes, we see the evidence.

      Liberal Atheist Thinker has no proof of God because the choices that it made, the way it lived, the sins it enjoys shut God out of it’s life so it therefore has no proof of God and because of that, bases everything upon their own horrible life. Just think how awful and untolerable and sad Liberal life must be! It is like the schools that took prayer out and don’t want God in the schools and when something very bad happens like a school shooting they exclaim, “where was God when all of this happened”! They don’t want God so how can they think reasonably to understand that because they hate him, that is the reason why there is no evidence of him in their life.
      LIberal Atheist thinker will not be an atheist in hell. People like this were ordained from before the beginning of the world to hate God just like there were others ordained to be the sons of God. It has to do with the heart.
      Marriage is a blood covenant that is ordained by God so no matter how man tries to make it legal by a weak law, that does not mean that God recognizes it. I don’t care if they allow lesbians or gay to pastor churches either. God has left that institution ever since it was made up by man also. Religious institutions are no more recognized by God as gay marriage is not either.

      That being said I do believe in GOD. However I am going to have to say that any evidence I know of has come from personal reflection and meditation on a variety of subjects. I respectfully disagree that there is evidence by simply looking around you. The universe (or creation if you so prefer) needs GOD, but I don’t think GOD needs the universe, there is not hidden signature to uncover–that would be too easy.

    sick. id rather have the country the way it was just 20 years ago. these types have gotten their way and our country has been harmed by every move they make. not just because of the ****’s but the entire moral compass of this country is fast going away. look at all the troubles we have now brought on by things like this and they way it was before. i miss my country and wish my kids would have been able to see and grow up in what i did……a much better place.

      New York, the state in-which I currently reside in, is a living, breathing hell-hole. I live 10-miles north of New York City, and the filth is so abundant that you feel dirty just going outside. People use the streets/sidewalks as their personal garbage cans. You hear $20-***-crap mufflers, screaming by at 200dB. You hear gangster rap music, and/or hispanic-crap music constantly blasting from $50 subwoofers, that are so distorted and cheap-sounding, you have trouble making out the words. Forget about being White, unless you live in one of uber-expensive suburbs outside of NYC; otherwise you’ll be subjected to intense racism. All the “latinos,” and blacks look at being White as a weakness. The girls are all whores; the guys treat them like nothing but semen-buckets, and the girls love to be degraded. This past school year for 12th grade, I just read that 90% of the _GRADUATES_ can’t even read or write. That’s mind-boggling; how do you graduate, without being able to read or write? The local welfare offices are so full, people are oozing out of the entrances; and they’re all young black/hispanic girls, with half-a-dozen kids each. You constantly hear about gang-murders in the ghettos. All of the aforementioned horror-points are the direct result of an ultra-liberal, left-wing political state commonly referred to as New York! Not to mention, too, that my county has the highest tax rate in the entire country> Oh yeah & our roads look like a war-zone, w/ 2ft-deep pothole cra

    We wouldn’t be having this type of b.s. going on if the government’s would stay out of the marriage business. This all has to do with getting benefits with a marriage license. So the Gays HAVE to be married to get anything from their partners. Same goes for heterosexual’s too. Places of worship should be the ones marrying couples not the damn governments. Just wait until they get rid of the Bush tax credits………………Marriage Penalty? Remember????? I do. Then Gay married couples will be complaining. Maybe they can get a special tax break, just for being Gay. This country is going to the dogs………….

      There is a strong argument that the true sins of Sodom and Gomorrah were less about sexual perversion and more about a complete lack of hospitality to strangers. Unfortunately the context within which the story was originally read/told is millennia past us and we have now only our more modern context within which to read and interpret it.

The good lessons of the bible are worth keeping and upholding but a 2000 year old story about the fears of an archaic society really shouldn’t influence our ability to allow two people to love each other now should it?

      Many of the so called losses you celebrate will ultimately be the destruction of a great republic that PROTECTS the rights of women, gays, ethnic and religious minorities, and bill of rights protections for everyone. This particular issue of gay marriage is actually rather minor until the federal government gets into the ring. Sure, many on the Religious Right (not myself) are upset but when the federales recognize gay marriage it then becomes a pocket book issue due to the bizarre way Social Security is administered.

      A few questions for you LACT, my fine antagonistic friend…
      1) Why do you trust government to make things better when three years ago you likely viewed government as the devil…err ummm uhhh…something bad, yet non-religious
      2) Why do you appear to take pleasure the in distress of others? That is bad karma. Random chance may kick your a55 for that.
      3) Do you understand that every govt of people that has officially NOT recognized the existence of God has been horrible on the rights and treatment of their own people? When people deem themselves supreme authority, it does not work out so well.

      Final remark. The God you are mockingly asking for ID on is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. You cannot see, smell, hear, taste, or touch gamma radiation yet it can still kill you. If it makes you happy to think of God as Mother Nature, whatever, but know that you are most certainly NOT the ultimate authority on anything beyond your piddly little lif

      While these two women are getting married after being committed to each other for probably several years, spouses are being cheated on, single men and woman are engaging in promiscuous hook-ups, abortions are taking place as a result of the “hooking up.“ ”traditional” married couples and unwed parents are abusing their children, or neglecting them because they are too drunk or strung out on crack or crystal meth. Could someone please explain to me why all the attention is being paid to gay marriage when all these other issues which are being mostly ignored. Taking a anti-gay marriage stance would be much more credible if the current state of traditional marriage wasn’t in shambles. It seems to me that targeting gays and blaming them for the moral decay of this country is the popular thing right now…..it makes about as much sense as a liberal left trying to blame everyone thing on George Bush. I think the main problem facing our society is our overwhelming desire to point fingers at others rather than taking a good hard look at ourselves.

      The Bible tells us that God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah because of the sexual immorality. I believe that it is wrong to live a gay lifestyle, and that the way a lot of people live is displeasing to God, not just gay people. It is none of my business how people live– I don‘t need to hear about ANYBODY’s sex life. I just don’t want to be told that I need to agree with it, to say that it’s right, because I don’t believe it is. I think that people can’t help being gay, but they can decide on whether or not to live the gay life. God hates the sik, but loves the sinner, and none of us are perfect. Pray for these people, ourselves and our nation.

      TomDB…I couldn’t agree more. I hate how everyone is blaming the decay of America on gay marriage. You know – because it would all be Pleasantville if only Tom and Jake weren’t allowed to be married. *eye roll* If you don‘t like gay marriage then don’t marry someone who has the same sexy parts as you. Simple as that. Love is love. Why does it scare so many people?! I am going to laugh when you all get to heaven and realize that you’re wrong.
