Two HS Students Skip Graduation Walk After They’re Barred From Wearing Army Sashes

Two high school students decided to skip their graduation walk after they were told minutes before the ceremony that they could not wear symbolic Army Sashes. The two boys have signed up to join the military and say they just wanted to honor the country. But school officials say that violates the rules.
WFMZ-TV reports:
The school stuck to its guns, even though the students said they only wanted to honor the Army.
Joel Hunsicker and Jordan Marker go through regular physical training every Thursday since they enlisted in the US Army.
“I’m willing to sacrifice my body, my mind, my soul and my life to make sure that people can have a better life,” Marker said.
The young men wanted to demonstrate their commitment by wearing US Army sashes or stoles during commencement from Schuylkill Valley High School.
“We get our army stoles on we‘re just about to go out and the one teacher said you got to leave that here you can’t wear them. I said what do you mean we can’t wear them,” said Marker.
“We won‘t wear them and we’ll go sit with our parents and honor our fellow students by supporting them by sitting there and watching them,” Hunsicker added.
This morning, Marker described the situation in more detail to “Fox and Friends,” and said both students refused to make a scene and argue the policy. Instead, the honored their fellow classmates by silently protesting:
The school superintended told WFMZ that the decision not to allows the sashes was in no way a statement against the military. Rather, the school has a policy that works to keep the focus on academic achievement.

Even though I love our military and those who serve, I must support the school for sticking to their dress code. If these two had wanted to wear say, rainbow scarfs in honor of Obama’s gay pride month, I’d be real bothered by that.

Seeing that you revel in correcting mistakes let me correct your military ignorance.
First they joined the ARMY and will not be going to “boot camp”. The Army attends Basic Training, the Marines call it boot camp. The Army Basic training is 8 1/2 weeks long. Marine Corps Boot Camp is 13 weeks. There is a difference.
Secondly when you graduate Army Basic Training you don’t wear Dress Blues. Dress Blues are for Formal gatherings like the Army Ball. The Class A uniform is what you graduate Basic Training in.

Posted on June 13, 2011 at 3:55pmFreedom of speech is SOooo 18th century.
Get with the program. Socialism is the “IN” thing this decade.
As good socialists you will learn that freedom of speech is only for the speech that the government WANTS to hear, it is certainly not for you, the COMMON people. You’re too stupid to understand it. We have to PASS the bill so you can find out what is in it.
Schools protect the illegals who want to fly the flag of MEXICO, but, when a United States CITIZEN wants to show the flag of the United States of America, it is hate speech.
I just wonder what they would have said if this had been a mexican student wanting to wear a red white and green stripe sash to ‘celebrate his heritage’??? Would that have been forbidden because they want the focus on academic achievement? On the other hand, if there is no policy, we will see designer sashes with Lousy Vegan logos (louis vuiton) or VISA credit card logos.
If the army has an ROTC unit at the high school, if the school teaches military science courses, then the sashes ARE related to academic achievement.
I hope they prohibited any club pins if that is their policy.
Common sense is just not used in public schools any longer.
Time to clean house and start fresh.
Private schools w/ vouchers will create competition, improve quality of education, and bring costs under control. Enough competition, and public schools will atrophy like the postal service will.

Posted on June 13, 2011 at 9:18pmSINISTA MACE has it right. Schools have rules. If you allow one exception, no matter how noble, that opens the door to anyone who wants to wear something making a declaration of loyalty of some kind. Oh jeez, including Muslims! They have a policy and they stick to it.
Some mentioned a much more liberal policy of the graduation ceremony; gays could wear rainbows, people could dress up the standard graduation gown however they chose. Personally I like that approach to graduation. And I think this school’s conservative “no exception” policy is dated. Still, that‘s the school’s policy. As I think someone said, if these young men can’t follow the rules of this school system, you gotta wonder what kind of soldiers they’ll make.
On the whole though, I’ll cut them some slack and actually support them. I was that age once too. Only time will tell whether these young men are actually out to change the world or only out to defy authority.

High school graduation is for honoring yourself and your accomplishments. There are few enough times in life when we set time aside to do only that. If anything, the Army should have been there wearing sashes marked “Joel Hunsicker” and “Jordan Marker.” These boys are more honorable for joining the Army than the Army is for taking them–but no sashes.
