Two Stabbed in Rose Bowl Brawl Before USC-UCLA Game

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say two men have been stabbed and two police officers injured in a brawl involving dozens of fans before the USC-UCLA football game.

Pasadena police Cmdr. Darryl Qualls says an estimated 50 to 75 fans fought in the Rose Bowl parking lot at about 4:30 p.m. Saturday, three hours before the rival Bruins and Trojans were set to play.

Qualls says the stabbing victims were taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital in fair condition, and three people have been jailed on suspicion of attempted murder.

He says one officer sprained a hand and another sprained an ankle while responding to the fight. Both were treated at the hospital and released.

Qualls says school passions and alcohol were major factors in the brawl.

    Hey, it isn’t about competition and sportsmanship. It‘s about ’mascots’ (for gangs) and other STUPID crutches for projected self esteem. These are weak people, fundamentally. Looking to assuage their lacking self esteem in the meaningless victory of some ‘school’ sports team.

This country was made great by American exceptionalism, risk taking and free markets, but NO, you want to take us down the road to communism, serfdom and the nanny state. I am here to tell you RIGHT NOW, the tree of liberty will be watered with the blood of patriots and tyrants, if you keep this up. Change course now, and we all may have a chance. Tax and spend has bankrupted our nation, and you sit there and blame it all on Bush, you moronic, one celled amoebas could not see your God given rights if they smacked you in the face. Go smoke some more dope, snort some coke, or mainline your heroin! You must be on drugs to think the way you do. You care more about turtles, salamanders and the birds, than the sanctity of a human life. YOU are the party of murder, and you will be judged by a higher power very soon.     Still hasn’t changed! There is always a weaker guy that wants to impress someone, but he can’t back it up without a knife or gun. Wussy! Yeah, that’s worth it. Stab ‘em! Kill ‘em! Prove how big of a man you are. Get ‘er done!!!!!!!!!! Now go spend the next 6 years of your life sitting in a cell with other wussies that had to stab / shoot someone and talk about how tuff you all are. Meanwhile, I’m gonna go eat bbq and drink beer!     I agree Dizzy…..this is not an isolated incident. There is no enjoyment in watching sports any more when people get into fights, even at the games of their children. Players are idolized even when they are involved in immoral and illegal behavior. Look at Michael Vick. He served a short prison sentence and did some face time for animal groups but he is right back out playing. A remorseful and truly humbled person would be an advocate to prevent animal cruelty not being a football star. These guys are idolized by kids. They should not be allowed to play ever again if they have been involved in any type of immoral, felonious behavior.

      This begs the question….WHY do kids idolize these empty-headed, egotistical thugs?! Because their parents do! Because their parents, while attending college were sucked into the ‘it’s for the school spirit’ college game and this continued into the NFL games when they were raising their children.

      Kids watching their parents see how excited they are, see the paraphernalia that goes with supporting a team, thinking this is ‘cool’ and these kids are encouraged (I use this word lightly) to join a team at a young age where these kids see their parents in the stand cheering them on. These children THINK they are pleasing their parents, THINK they are doing something wonderful and great because the majority of their other friends and neighbors are going along with the charade also!

      Seriously, parents need to get a backbone here and take a stand on what is truly important in life and what is truly worth holding up to our children to emulate and the NFL players are NOT it! Nor are any other sports athletes.

    Football players whether college or professional are missing something upstairs, easily led to believe that what they do somehow enhances peoples lives. Those that follow this sport are suffering from the same syndrome–empty headed, will pout when their team loses, become possessive over teams, coaches and players, can be found punching out the guy next to them that says something wrong about another player and are suckers because they’ve wasted time and/or money on WHAT?! What have these players, coaches, teams done for anyone? Oh yeah, they visit the sick kids in the hospital cause they’re told to for pictures, and get paid for it, which pulls at your heartstrings making you say, “See!, they’re good people!” They’d be better people if they served the military! Their time would be better put to use defending the Republic! Then in my eyes they would be good people. Making football into this huge, mega money machine and that goes for the college level too as it brings in gobs of money of there too, is a sin. It should be played just for the fun of it not for the $$!!!

    Sorry if this has ‘ticked off’ those that live for the game, but something is just wrong with what football has been made into.

      I may agree that many the players have become over paid spoiled brats, but they are no different than in that regard than the Hollywood people, or for that matter, the guy paid over $100K a year in
      wages and benefits to put a brake cable in a Buick. The league might encourage players to get involved in charitable functions, but I don’t believe they force anyone more than the usual United Way torture that many people must suffer through. Unless you can actually look into their hearts I’d never
      attack their charitable motives.
